Wiegel from Holland

Hello all,

I recently discovered a direct ancestor, whose name was grossly misspelled (I think) in the 1850 census. Maybe she had an accent and the census taker couldn't properly spell the surname, etc.

She appears as: Hannah Waygall b. in about 1769 in Holland. Native tongue: Dutch, both parents born in Holland as well. Immigrated to the U.S., settling in New York where she died sometime between 1850-1860.

Problem is, I really doubt that 'Waygall' was the right spelling. I'm exploring various alternatives in my search for the 'right' one, and I'm wondering if the spelling 'Wiegel' could possibly be Dutch. If so, does anybody happen to have any Hannah Wiegel's in their family files with the approximate birth/data as above? Hannah could possibly be a family name as her daughter was named Hannah also. Unfortunately I don't know her husband's name as she was already widowed in the 1850 census where I discovered her and earlier than that lists only the heads of household with just tick marks for women & children.

Any help would be great!

Thanks and good luck in your own searching,
Stephanie

Wiegel family from Schwed

Glenda, Carol -
I just saw the email from Carolyn Gorr/Carol, and went to Ancestry to do a search. I saw this, & responding here. I was just transferred at work, so I am doing double duty, so very busy. Glenda, I know I have had some communication with you before, I hope we can make some connection on families. My family came from Schwed. I do have a Christ Christoff Wiegel in my family. I have info at home. I have very little other than names. No dates before my Grandfather. I'll send what I have tonight. My Grandfather (David Wiegel) came to the US in 1911. His brother Frederik Wiegel also came to the states, I don't know when. I know he was in California and then in the Sheyboygan area. My Grandfather moved from Chicago to Colorado in 1920, then back to Chicago in about 1927. I have ordered a family chart from Pleve. It is due in the fall of this year. My emails are kw77026@aol.com, and Kwiegel@Allstate.com.
I hope this is the start of a new connection to the Wiegel family.

Keith Wiegel

I live in Arkansas now but many of my relatives still live near Chicago. (Des Plaines, Cary) I know that my Grandmother, Sophie, had a brother that stayed behind in Schwed. Her last maiden name was Borgardt. I will keep in touch. Robin

wiegel's from swede

I'm making some progress on our Wiegels. Seems that Christ Christoff Wiegel had at least two sons. One son is well documented (I'll have to check for his name at home) the second was Christian.

Christian had a son Gottfried (b @1880) that lived in emigrated to Sheyboygan WI and then to Chicago Illinois. His other children all died of disease.

Gottfried had a son John Sr (b 1911). (who is alive at 89). Several other children, but only other Wiegels in line are James and Mark in Boston (sons of Alex)

John Sr. son John David is my husband. We have a son David and grandson Andrew Wiegel.

There is also a Andrew and Gottfried Wiegel that probably are brothers of Christ Christoff. Of course they could be sons also

I don't know of any that came through South America, but I have a lot more to learn. I'll write again next week when I have my info with me. I'd like to be able to find the link between all the oldest Wiegel's.

Have you seen the Schwede site at www.hometown.aol.com?

Christ Christoff Wiegel's

Keith, good to hear from you again. Since the birth of my grandson Andrew Wiegel, I've been doing a little more active search on the Wiegel family. My father in law will be 90 this year so we have 4 generations of Wiegel's at our home for Easter.
Not long ago, I found out that my husband's great grandfather was Christian and not Gottfried. Also that grandfather, Gottfried had a first cousin, Fred in Jefferson Park, Chicago, IL. This convinced me that our Christian was indeed related to your family and was Christ Christoff's son.

Anyway, I'm seeing my husband's aunt in Missouri next week and hope to have some more info. She's the one that has straighted out the fact that her grandfather was Christian and not Gottfried.

She also told me that all of Christian's children, except for Gottfried, died from disease and that is why Gottfried's children kind of get lost in the family.

So I have
Christ Christoff
Christian
Gottfried (Slida)
John David Sr. (1911)
John David Jr. (1948)
David Edward (1969)
Andrew David (2000)
I'll get back to both of you later this week with more dates.
Thanks so much
Glenda

Christ Christoff Wiegel's

I believe that your Christ Christoff is that same as ours. That along with your Gottlieb, he had at least a second son named Christian (b 1840-1860)

His son Gottfried (born Feb 11, 1880 in Swede)would be my husband's grandfather. I understand that all of Gottfried's brothers and sisters died of disease. Gottfried came to the US in 1910 and settled in Sheyboygan and worked for Kohler. He was married twice in Swede. The second time (Oct 6, 1906)to Dorothea Gorr (b Nov 24, 1884). They had 9 children that survived infancy.

My guess is that Carol's ancestor is a brother possibly to your David?

I'll check my old records some more later this week and let you know after our trip to Missouri.
Glenda

Wiegels from Schwed

Finally have my notes in front of me.

Bob Lutzow has the Jefferson Park Chicago Wiegel's pretty well figured out. His oldest known ancestor (that I know of) is Andrew Wiegel (b 1830/40) in Schwed and married to Katherine Herzog. Bob's uncle, Fredrick Wiegel (b 5/117/87) m Dorothea Schweigart. My father in law (John David b 9/2/1911) talks about this Fred and my husband's aunt says that he was a cousin. (I see a potential problem here as dad and this Fred are 24 years apart. Maybe Fred has a son Fred? In Jefferson Park)? As dad tells it, Fred was with him the night he met my mother-in-law.

David Borgardt sent me a wonderful family tree of the Gottfried Wiegel's (b 1846/1866) married to Marie Katherine Felsing. Gottfried was the son of Christ Christoff Wiegel and Marie Gross.

My husband's great grandfather was Christian Wiegel (b1840/1860). My husband's grandfather was Gottfried Wiegel (b2/11/1880), and my husband's father is the John David above (b 9/2/1911). My assumption is that Christian was the son of Christ Christoff and brother of Gottfried (b1846/1866). I am also assuming that Bob's, Andrew (b 1830/1840), Heinrich (b1826/1846), and Carol's Gottlieb, are either brothers of Christ Christoff or sons, and therefore brothers of Christian.

I also have a letter from Sophie Riemer Stalzer, who says her mother was Dorothea Wiegel (b 9/5/1896), daughter of Heinrich Wiegel (8/21/1870) and Dorothea Hoppe, granddaughter of Henry and Rosalie Wiegel, and that they lived across the street from our Wiegel's in Jefferson Park. She knows of no connections between the families.

I know that there are Altergott's in the family, but this may be on the Gorr side. Also, Henry Kramer was my husband's godfather, so there must be a connection there.

Anyone know how these families all link up???

I didn't know about Christian then.

I'll get a copy of the chart and send it off to you

I met with my husband's aunt this weekend. I don't think there was any significant information, but my husband recorded it and I want to listen to it all again with my notes in front of me.

I'll get back with you
Glenda

Hi. The Fred Wiegel that you are referring to is not the Fredrik Wiegel I referred to. There was a Fred Wiegel that lived in Jefferson Park (Chicago). I do not know anything about him. I know about him through Bob Lutzow(spelling?). We have tried to find a connection, but didn't have enough info to connect. I think I have Bob's email at home. I'll try to get you the info I have tonight or later in the week. Maybe your Aunt can connect some more dots. Exciting.

Keith

Glenda, Carol
I think I am running into the same problem I have had in the past. The names are the same, but I don't have enough info to match. I have no dates earlier than my Grandfather. Anyway, here is the info I have:
1. Christ Christoff Wiegel b abt 1825-1830
2. Gottfried Wiegel b abt 1855-1860
Gottfried suposedly had 12-13 kids, I only know about: David Wiegel (1886)- my Grandfather, Henry Wiegel, Johannes Wiegel, Fredrik Wiegel 1894 - came to the states after 1911, Christ Wiegel. I don't know if these are listed in birth order.
3. David Wiegel b 1886 Schwed, came to the states in 1911 (my Grandfather )
4. Henry Wiegel b 1919 - Chicago my Father
5. Keith Wiegel b 1948 - Chicago - me

As you can see from the approx dates, they don't seem to match up.

Keith Wiegel
