Hi List,

I need help tracking down a 1841 census record for Charles Wight (1795 Westminster, Eng -1875) he married a Elizabeth Prior (1799 Eng-1875) @ St George Hanover Square, Westminster in 1820. I've done a number or different surnames Wight/White/ Wright etc and still hit the brick wall. I know that he migrated to Australia in 1850 with 4 children and wife but tracking him down before that is the needle in the hay stack i cant seem to find
Would really appreciate some help if possible.
Regards,
Bec

Hello,
I have recently started researching my ancestry and found that I am also related to Lyman Wight. He is my 4th Great Grandfather and his son Levi Lamoni Wight is my 3rd Great Grandfather. My Great Grandmother was Harriet Ethel Minear and her mother was Harriet Emily Wight Minear. My grandmother passed away recently and I have inherited all of the family photos. Anyway, I have lived in the central Texas area my whole life. Would love to exchange information.
I am a descendant of Lyman Wight. I suppose it's the same one but I don't have my "list" in front of me. I am not into genealogy very much. My grandmother was Harriet Wight Minear, her father was Levi L. Wight who was a son of Lyman Wight. I'll come back on here when I find my information. I may have skipped a generation or two but they were from Texas, the area you mentioned. The Minears were also members of the Morman colony.

Hi, I was actually curious about your research and wanted to talk to you about it. My younger brother's name is actually Thomas Makena Wight and that's what caught my eye.
I know our prominent ancestors are Michael Collins, William Wallace, both Pocahontas and John Rolfe. We're majority Irish/Scottish/Native American, but of course all 3 (especially Irish and Scottish) were widely known for being bred out by the English. No offense. I know we have English blood in us but I'm not sure if we're related to that Thomas Wight. If we are though, then we'd be more than happy to help.
You can email me at trophy_scar@yahoo.com

I am a great-great-great granddaughter of Lyman Wight and his main/first wife Harriet Benton [not Harriet Newton, Sara (Corbin Wight) was Lyman's mother] through their daughter Anna Christinia (Hannah Christianna) and Spencer Smith. My great grandmother was their daughter Anna Minerva Smith Turner (married to Andrew Williamson Turner)mother to my grandfather Albert William Turner. My mother Maryann Turner Hewitt and myself moved to Texas from Indiana in 1980 and to the Kerrville/Fredericksburg area in 2000. In 2006 Mom decided to research her roots. She knew her grandmother had been a Mormon with the maiden name Smith. Through her initial research and my continuing research we discovered that we have ancestorial roots in the Texas Hill Country. A very good free website with colony families name charts, birth charts, and historic marker chart is The handbook of Texas Online - Lyman Wight or tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/WW/fwi5. I would be interested in hearing from any other descendants of the Mormom colonies in the Texas Hill Country particularly of Lyman Wight. I can be emailed through here or if you are in the area I can be reached at Crenwelge Motors in Kerrville.

I was able to find Edward and his family living with his in-laws on the 1920 census in KY -- last name spelled "Kelley" and his father-in-law is "Wm J White", but it's definitely them!

So I have my grandfather's dob now (1918) and his father's name, also Edward. Amazing what you can find with a paid subscription... Anyway, my biggest hurdle now is finding out concretely when and where he died, and is buried. From there I can search for obits. Mom and I are planning a trip to Indy soon, so see if we can get more info from his marriage record to Wilma Shunk.

"Secrets" was a byword with my grandmother, Edward Kelly's first wife...

What was his father's name? Edward Kelly is a very common name, and it's made tracking him down difficult. Also, is there any chance that the source(s) of your third-hand information would be willing to contact me? I can be reached at wendy (at) dianaslegacy (dot) net.

Again, I really appreciate your taking the time to reply!

Even if it's not the news I would have hoped for, it's not unexpected.

Do you know if Edward was buried in Cynthiana, and where? Also, my mother's baby book mentions "Mickey" as an aunt. That must have been a nickname, which of his sisters was called Mickey, do you know?

Thank you, thank you!

Daniel Wight b 1690 d 1773 in Dedham, MA. I have found that he married Susanna Alden b 1706 d unk daughter of Henry Alden & Deborah Streeter. I have children as Benjamin b c 1752, Ann b 1754 and Daniel b 1756. If this true she would have been in her late forties when she had these children. I have another wife for Daniel as Susanna Kinch b 1694, though I found this maybe the same person. I have no documentation on either marriage. Can anyone help me confirm this?
TIA
Pat
Carstairs & Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland

I have a John Wight who married Marion Cowper in 1824 in Carstairs.

He is the only Wight I could find in the Carstairs parish register before the birth of his children & his marriage. The birth record for his daughter, Janet, says he was a shepherd and gives his home as Carstairs House. There is only one other birth I saw for Carstairs House and that was to a gardener.

Does anyone know anything about "Carstairs House"? If this is the family home of a landed gentry, my John Wight might have come from another of his properties.

His son, John Wight, born in 1826 in Carstairs, married Isabella Cooper in Carluke in 1854 (she was supposed to be born in Carstairs around 1830 but there are 2 Isabella Cowpers, one in 1828 & one in 1834...). They had 5 children in Carluke before moving to Edinburgh (1863-65) where they had 4 more children before John died in 1873.

He seems to have had a brother James, but I found no evidence of James' birth. (James Wight's kids are living with the widowed Isabella in the 1881 census and are listed as a niece & nephews).

Are any of these people related to the lines you are researching?

Blessings,
Joanne in Virginia, USA

Ida M. Clark Finch WIGHT

In the 1920 U.S. Census, Wheatland Co., Montana, Ida M. Clark Finch WIGHT is present with her son Harley R. Finch (from her first marriage). In this census she is shown to be a widow... so, her 2nd husband, Mr. Wight, has died. I have no clues as to where she resided between the 1895 Iowa State Census (Calhoun Co.), where she is with her first husband and children, and the 1920 U.S. Census. Nor have I found her in the 1930 U.S. Census.

If anyone is aware of a WIGHT - Ida (Clark) FINCH marriage where Mr. Wight may have died in Montana(?), I would greatly appreciate your assistance.

Thank you,

Merton Franklin

Re: Lyman Wight

Hi,

I'm also a desecendant of Colonel Lyman Wight b.1796, he is my 4th G-grandfather, along with one of this wives Harriet Sarah Benton b.1801.

It seems that Col. Wight lived a very colorful life, I recently run across some information in the Ancestry Family Tree's that suggest that he had apparently 5 wives, and atleast 16 children, one step-daughter. *****************

http://www.boap.org/LDS/Early-Saints/LWight.html**********

http://personal.atl.bellsouth.net/w/o/wol3/wightl1.htm********

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyman_Wight******************

http://www.farwesthistory.com/tour1915.htm***************

There are many websites on Colonel Lyman Wight and his life, all I had to do was enter his name into the search field and what a surprise I encountered.

His Son Orange Lysander Wight b. 1823, I descend through also, there is a website on him also....****************

http://www.boap.org/LDS/Early-Saints/OWight.html***************

His autobiography is really interesting, it tells of his mother giving birth to a brother on the banks of the Missouri River, under a tent made of quilts, while there was snow on the ground.

I descend through Orange Lysander's daughter with his second wife, Matilda Carter b. 1827, who is Rosa C. Wight b.1855 Texas, sometimes listed as Wright, who married T.E. Pace b. 1856, Ark. Orange Lysander tells that in his bio, that he was also a Texas Ranger, and a member of the Army, and if I'm not mistaken, he served in the Confederancy.

Orange Lysander tells in his bio that he did practice pologamy, but didn't really come out and tell that, but the dates of marriage for two wives were Feb 6, and the second one was Feb 7, of the same year. He did add a third wife to the list, a Rossilla Carter, with Miss Sarah Hadfield being first, I believe.

Quote from Orange Lysander Wight: "We all boarded a steamboat and started for Black River, Wisconsin. Long before we reached our destination I got acquainted with the Hadfield family. There were two young girls. I had them away where I thought I could induce them to take up with me, now it remains to see how I succeeded. I at once commenced keeping company with Miss Sarah Hadfield and at the same time paid close attention to Miss Matilda Carter. Now it would be uninteresting to you to relate all the ups and downs I had in my courtship, so I will merely say I succeeded in marrying both of them, the other Miss Rosilla Carter I married some years afterward. All the foregoing is written to show or prove to you that plural marriage was practiced and taught by the Prophet and Apostles of that day."

Now...its confusing, but the best I can tell is that my GG Grandmother Rosa was at best named after one of the other wives, "Rosilla". Which is why it took me so long to find Rosa C. Wight..."Wright".

Now, what I'd appreciate is if anyone has this information also...if it appears to be wrong concerning Rosa C. Wight "Wright", would someone please clear it up...I have searched for her for years, and finally a few weeks ago, come across all this information which makes sense, every census I have found her on list her birth state as Texas, which makes sense....

Thank you, Stephanie

Hi Kim:

I'm Jacquie. Just read your message of 2005. I've been searching for details of Henry Alexander Von Wight for so long. I know of his life in America very well, but not much before he came here. But as of yesterday, things are starting to show up. He was my grandfather. He had 16 children, many of whom died of scarlet fever. My father was Charles Elmer Wight, born in 1909 in Ashland Ky. There were at least two girls that my father spoke of. Minerva, who had a son, Franklin Marion Osborne. He served in the Navy and was at Pearl Harbor. His wife's name was Theresa (pronounce the th). They had no children. Rachel married a man named Earl Woods. I have pictures of them and their children. She came and stayed with us at least once when I was a little girl. She was a favorite of my Dad's. He had a brother Billy who was in Vaudeville, Bob who lived and died in Calif. He has four sons. One is named Gary, Ricky. Can't think of the others just now. A brother Richard and Henry who was in WWII, but committed suicide in Dayton, Ohio. Sam who married Emmaline a second when cousin when they were 14 and 15 later divorce and he eventually married a woman named Pauline. In their later years they moved to Fla. They have since died. My father died in 1974. Grandpa died in 1943. He was born in Frankfurt, Germany about 1868. Somehow he got to Southwark ST. John Horsleydown, London, England as a British subject. There he was an inmate in a Union Workhouse called St. Olaves. His occupation was listed as a scholar and his approximate age was listed as 13 years. His neighbors or other inmates ranged in age from 2 yrs to 60 yrs. Their names are on the register. You can get on Ancestry. com and look this up by typing in his name and 1868 for the year. I was very excited when I saw your message. I have their marriage license and many stories that Dad told me about his father's past that of his living in Germany and England and the timing is right. So I know this is the right man. Hope you will enjoy this, too.

Jacquie

Wight family of East Leake, Nottinghamshire, and the City of London

Is anyone else researching families named Wight who migrated from Nottinghamshire to London in the seventeenth century. If so, the East Leake and District Local History Society would be interested in hearing from you. The name is often wrongly indexed as White or Wright, while searches for Wight bring up hundreds of references to the Isle of Wight, so it is tricky!
George Wight was a Citizen and Cooper of the City of London circa 1730; an earlier Robert Wight was a Citizen and Poulterer. Are they in your family trees?

Peter Foden, East Leake
www.ancestrography.co.uk

William,

good to here from you. I've researched this family off and on for a few years now. My wife(a blankenship) ties into this family. Her great grandfather was Mary F. Blankenship Wight's brother.

Anyway, I done a bit more research since the last posting.
It seems from the obituaries at least that:

Henry A. Jr. died on 22 Jul 1938 in Huntington from an apparent suicide. (gunshot would to stomach). He is buried in huntington. (Death Certificate is available at West Virginia archives website www.wvculture.org/vrr Look for first name "Henry" last name "Wright Jr."

Bernice did marry Clarence Bias second and she died 23 May 1991 in Hartford City, BLackford Co., Indiana and was buried in Huntington.(she died with one of her children)
After Henry Jr.'s death she operated a grocery out of her home for a little while?(according to 1941 city directory information. 1942 she was listed as a factory worked. She lived at 3725 4th ave. E. in Huntington. She was listed at Bernice Wight in 1943. By 1945 she had married Clarence Bias.

I lived in Ashland, KY so it's a bit easy to obtain local information.

I would love to here more about William Lyman Wight?

Jim

It seems to me that my uncle's (your g-grandfather) name was John Edward Kelly. I don't know that the surnames have been spelled any other way than Woodard, Wight, Kelly.

Edward Kelly may have changed his name at times during his life and I believe he has lived in many states.

I don't know anything about the woman who contacted me about my uncle's death, she was a stranger. I don't know what their relationship was. My guess is that she, too, has passed away.

You probably know more about this family than I do.

I am the daughter of Ruth M. Kelly. Ruth Kelly-Haggerty was my grandmother. Edward was my uncle. Ora Wight was my great-grandmother. I do not have much information about Edward. I do know that he was married and lived in the San Francisco area in the late 1950's or early 1960's. I am sorry to have to tell you that Edward passed away about 7-8 years ago in Cynthiana, KY. Both of his sisters have also passed away, Ruth passed away about 10 years ago and Hazel passed away just recently.

Hazel was nicknamed "Mickey", but I do not know how it came about. I do not know if Edward is buried in Cynthiana. I received "third-hand" information from some who knew him during his last years.

I'm sorry, but I just don't have very much information at all, it seems the family was good at keeping secrets.

E.M. Henderson wife of John Henderson resided in Barry Missouri according to 1880 census for that area. A late second cousin had left info that she died in 1885-1888 in Barry, Missouri. I would like to know closer date, where she died and what became of their three or so children. Thank you.
