Any luck in finding Samuel's parents? The 1790 census for Dutchess Co. shows the name as Willbour. That census is pretty worthless as far as deriving much information from it since it only lists heads of households and the number of males over 16, under 16 and number of females.

The first names of Willbour head of households in Dutchess Co. in 1790 are: Brownell, Carr, Clark, Christopher, David(2), Eseck, Gideon, Ichabod, Jeptha, John, Joseph, Merriby, Samuel(2), and Thomas(2).

I know that Jeptha had 13 children but I only found 1 (Elizabeth) and possibly a son, Henry. Jeptha and 3 of his sons moved to Avon, NY. He died there in 1843 at the age of 84.

I am trying to find the parents of Benjamin Wilber/Wilbur, b. abt 1775 in NY, married Elizabeth Love at the First Stanford Baptist Church in Bangall, Dutchess Co. in 1797, lived in Tioga & Potter Counties, PA from at least 1820 on, and I assume he died there, since I cannot find him again in NY.

I am also interested in finding the parents of Randall Clark Wilber, b. 1819 in Rhode Island, m. Mary Perry of Washington, Co. NY, had 4 children (Catherine, Perry, Adeline and Gardner). Randall died in 1855 and is buried in Andover, NY.

Good luck and happy hunting!!
I'm searching for a connection for James Fones Gardner to the Gardiner's of Narragansett.
I believe it's possible that this James Fones Gardner was the son of John Gardiner, Jr., brother of Diadama Gardiner who married Benjamin Perry and resided in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County, New York.
A recent y-DNA test shows this James Fones Gardner is a 36 out of 37 marker match to a descendant of George Gardiner of Narragansett.
The one marker that is not a match is one which mutates easily.
Also, in the will of Fones Gardiner (Susannah Collins) in Easton, Washington County, New York, he names his nephew, J. Fones Gardner. Fones Gardiner was a brother to Diadama.
Any leads appreciated.
Judy
Great to hear from you! Try this link for the Wilber family:

http://www.flowersforeverbylinda.com/Family%20Files/Friends%...

I hope it works. The site is still up. I have it book marked and still use it on occasion.

My great grandfather was Vernon Wilber. When I was young, I would constantly ask him to tell me stories about the "olden days" I never forgot the story he told me about his grandfather Rufus, and how he ran away to fight in the union army. ..When I started doing my family tree I remembered that story so I looked into it further. The Wilber site has copies of his pension records. His affidavit explaining his alias name is included. It's really interesting. Samuel's records are also on that site!

I do have the info you described about Abraham and his wife and kids, but thanks. It's his father that is my dead end.

If I come up with any questions I will ask you. Feel free to do the same. Also I have family pics of the Wilber sawmills that Rufus and Samuel owned in Woodstock as well as other things and people. Let me know if interested!

Thanks. Hope to hear from you again and good luck!

Hi Maydiggs922, I am working on part of the same family tree...well trying anyway. I haven't been successful on finding much for the father you're talking about either. I didn't even know that he could have possibly been from Rhode Island. I'm working on the Wilber and Boice side, my father's maternal side of the family. His mother was June M. Wilber of Stone Ridge. Her parents were Edna C. Boice and Abram W. Wilber. Abram was the son of Samuel G. Wilber b. 1844.

I have some info on Abraham Wilber b. 1806: wife's name, thier birth and death dates, and children's names, that I found from other family trees on this site and possibly other places. I can't be absolutely positive that it's accurate, but let me know if you're interested, or if you want to compare. I'm totally interested in learning anything I can!

Oh, and thanks for that tid bit about Rufus' alias. I've been trying to find out more about his service in the Civil War but nothing ever came up using the name Rufus. How did you come across this? I'm definitely going to try this.

I also tried that website you provided but it didn't work...would like to see it if it's still up.

Well, happy hunting and hope to hear back from you!

SMT

In Fasken Cemetery (pretty sure it is Jasper County, if not it is real close), I found Sylvester T. Wilbur 1846-1926. Also there were Gabriella Wilbur 1847-1925 and Joseph H. Wilbur 1902-1934. The grave markers were also imprinted with "Ulmer Service" which I believe was a local funeral home which might have some more information.

In looking at your dates I am thinking that Sylvester T and Gabriella were likely his parents even though they spelled their name with "u"r.

I took snapshots while there several years ago thinking they might be related to me but I haven't found the connection. My g-gma was from Avilla. She was Alice Kollenburn and she married Albert Wilber there in Jasper County. If you would like an digital copy of the grave markers and Cemetery front gates just let me know.

Thanks for the reply. I am confused as to how Diadama Perry's parents can be named Gardiner, since Diadama's maiden name is Perry. Although my Wilbers do go back to RI, my James Wilber was born in 1860 NY, Allegany Co. Town of Hornell. There is a listing on Ancestry.com entitled Births Rhode Island 1636-1930 which shows a William Wilbur born on 09 Jul 1768 to Jonathan Wilbur and Sarah Fones. Maybe this is where the name Fones originated.

Do you know if your Christopher Wilber had two brothers named Isaac and David? I have a Christopher Wilber born about that time, from NY, who left NY between 1825-1835ish, and headed east. David and Isaac settled in Lawrence Co., IL, and Christopher supposedly stopped in Indiana, probably not far from Vigo Co., or perhaps even in Vigo County. Christopher is a mystery link in my ancestral research. This Christopher, if he is the brother of Isaac and David (above), would have been my 3rd great-granduncle, as Isaac was my 3rd great-grandfather.

Does this sound like your Christopher? If so, I'll be happy to share what info I have on the brothers, and if he is the same as mine, I have an almost-certain identification of who their Wilber grandfather is, but am not yet certain which of grandpa Wilber's sons is Isaac, David, and Christopher's father. It's something I'm working on as we speak, in fact, since I only got this clue a couple of days ago. But if it sounds like your Christopher and family, I'm happy to share what I have, and would love to know what you have.

This has to be the same Harry Wilbur. Someone found the Kalamazoo Telephone Directories for me with their listings. These were from 1920, 1927, 1931, and 1935 under H. L. Wilbur. Then in the 1942 and 1943 Kalamazoo City Directories was listed Elizabeth Wilber, widow of Harry L. Wilber. [Note wrong surname spelling.] Elizabeth was matron at the Civic League Home at that time. Unless Harry's body was shipped back to NY, it would appear he died in MI. He had no other relatives in NY that I know of, just in IL and his immediate family in MI.

I am curious if their daughter Marion died in childhood or was living at someone else to be missed in her parents' 1920 census, or possibly married young. Did your family have any record of Elizabeth having a daughter?

It's possible, then, that both Harry and Elizabeth Wilber died in MI but were buried in NY, especially if Marion did die young and was buried at Forest Lawn before their move to MI. They may have wanted to be buried near her, in addition to Elizabeth's folks being there. If you didn't remember seeing a marker for Marion, it could be an unmarked grave, who knows.

Thanks for the lead. At least I've found a little more about the family now.
Delores

The best source of information on the Wilbur/Wildbore family tree is called "The Wildbores to America: A Family tree" by John Reid Wilbor printed 1941 in Baltimore (original edition by Benjamin Wilbour in 1907). See if you can get it through a local genealogical society or state archives. Or maybe your public library subscribes to HeritageQuest, where you can read and download pages of it.

It starts from the coming of the first Wildbores/Wilbors/Wilburs to America (and the change of the name) to the early 1900s. It's an absolute must for anyone researching their early American and Puritan roots.

Also USGENWEB.org has Rhode Island pages, which have lots of free information - marriages, cemeteries, censuses.

Happy Hunting!

That is Stickles. So Ancestry is correct on that one. One of the Ketchams married to Stickles. Thomas just disappeared after 1860. I thought perhaps it was the civil war or something. He was listed in the 1855 census as an engineer. I think it may have been on the RR or perhaps working on the canal. I simply cannot find any burial information or any sign in any other census. Census is no help going backward because they don't list anyone but head of family. Any suggestions? I am new at this and have found help on message boards with other family members.

They lived and aare buried in Jacksonville Centery, Oswego County, New York.

I have searched all the cemetery records of Dutchess County for likely candidates. It's possible that his father's name was "James" as his son was named "James" and "Albert" for the maternal grandfather.

If you have discovered any good sources in Dutchess County, please let me know.

Thanks,
M.
I realize that your post is from 2001, but I just started researching the Wilber line. An aunt of mine, Alice Wilber shows in the 1930 census (Erie County, New York) with her siblings, Dorothy (B:1913), Claude (B:1915), Ruth (B:1917) and their mother Caroline nee EDLER. I talked to my aunt briefly and she confirmed that she was born in South Dakota and she literally came to Erie County, New York in her mother’s arms. I have learned her father’s name was Raymond and was a traveling salesman who was on the road most of the time.
Wondering if you can help me out, Please?

i asked my father, and he said he never heard of a daughter, perhaps she would have died or left home before my dad was born in 1929. He remembers travelling to michigan once as a child and visiting his uncle George Reader and his wife. it would have been in the mid 1930's because George had died in 1937 and i think harry passed before that because George's obituary mentions Mrs. Elizabeth Wilber, while his other sister was mentioned using her husbands name, mrs. william minton.

as i said i could be wrong but i remember when my brother and i looked up Minton graves in forest lawn, and either elizabeth, harry, or both are buried in the family plot.
i believe that harry and his brother in law George Reader must have been in business together, because George Reader had both a home in Grand Rapids and in Kalamazoo. George also owned a successful fish market.
sorry i don't have any concrete info for you.
b

i believe Harry's wife Eliazabeth was my great-great aunt. Her maiden name was Reader, probably born in the uk, but lived in Buffalo, NY.
In her brother George's obituary she is listed as Mrs. Elizabeth Wilber of Kalamazoo., so it seems like this is the same woman. Georges' death was in 1937. she had two sisters, Annie Reader Flickinger, and (ethel?) Reader Minton, who was my great grandmother. i think the wilburs and George Reader may have been business partners, because george owned a successful fishery/fish market also.
