Hello Larry

Thanks for your reply. Sounds like you and my husband are cousins. I can tell from your info you are in the line. Raeford (sometimes spelled Raford) N or M Wilbourn (spelled Wilburn alot of the time) was born in Foystye County, Georgia around 1847. His parents J A J Wilburn & Cathrine Hysaw Wilburn and all his sibling except for the youngest son born in 1859 moved to Alabama between 1857&1858; to Tuscaloosa County. Raford married Elizabeth Ann Jones in late 1869 or early 1870. They had seven children all born in Alabama: Lee 1872, Albert 1875, Eudora 1877, Manley 1879, Tilmon 1880, Vard 1884, & Emma 1886. Raford & Elizabeth Ann and all the children moved to Water Valley, Yalobusha County, Mississippi between 1888 & 1890. Elizabeth Ann die around 1890 or 1891. Raeford then married Nancy Victoria Ross Woods (a widow). They had one child, a son Peter 1893. Vard married Effie Lou Wilbourn and she died circa 1918 he then married Cubelle.
Hopes this helps you. Please tell me how you are related to Raeford. You can reach me at jrwilb@earthlink.net if you would like or on the message board.

Thanks

Janie

I was very sad when I saw the message that your post was no longer valid because I was fearful that you did not want anyone else to contact you. But was happy to read the last sentence that said that you would be happy to share what you had learned with anyone asking about it. My interest is in the Wilbourns. I am researching my husband's family. He was born in Water Valley Ms. I have documented back to his G G Grandfather J A J Wilburn/Wilbourn born in Jackson County Georgia moved his wife Catherine Hysaw Wilburn and seven kids to Tuscaloosa County Alabama around 1858. My other research does not have all I dotted and the T's crossed because of confusion with family naming kids born same year the same name etc, etc. But I do go from J A J Wilburn to Gideon Wilbourn married to Martha Elzey to Aaron Wilbourn Married to Elizabeth Younger to James Wilbourn married to Isabel Teague to Edward Wilbourn. I have Loftins on the tree and Penningtons.
If you could also tell me how to get a copy for myself of the two published works by Ann Gahan I would be very graftful.
Thank you for what ever you can share it all will help.

Regards

Janie

I would like to know more I am researching a Raeford Wilbourn who goes to a J A J Wilbourn To a Gideon Wilbourn then Aaron to James to Edward and then to a William.
The line I have looked at so far came from Pa to Md to Va to NC then to SC and Ga to Alabama then Mississippi and on from there. The Raeford Wilbourn is my husband's Great Grandfather. He was born in Georgia moved to Alabama as a young boy and married and had seven children born there before moving to Mississippi. We are told that his wife and mother of these seven children was 1/2 Indian that her father was pure blood Indian Elizabeth Ann Jones was her name born in Mississippi ??? living in Alabama in the 1860's where she met Raeford. The Wilbourn name is found spelled several different ways makes research hard.
I know this may not sound like your line but I have taken leaps of faith before when it sounded like not the same but took a chance and thought it was too good too close to the
line I am researching and have never been sorry for the contact or time spent on e-mails
please respond

Janie

Welbourns of Accomac

My ancestor is Edward Wilbourn, first seen in Prince William Co., VA in 1753 and died in Surry Co., NC in 1806. I have my line completely documented back to Edward with physical documents (copies of state records). I would like to take the line further back. I tried this by finding circumstantial evidence (records) that appeared to point to a father for him by naming patterns, location, age ranges, and other theoretical possibilities. Taking all of these into account, I came to a conclusion that it was most probable that he was a son of Thomas and Margaret Wilbourn of Frederick Co., VA, but could find no document to prove it. Also, another family claimed Thomas as the father of their Edward Wilbourn, born about the same time. The document they relied on was a family bible that named Thomas and Margaret as his parents.

They started a DNA Project to prove their claim. There were some Wilburn/Welborn/etc. participants from several different lines that were shown to be not from their family. I took a DNA test and found that I also didn't match them. My conclusion from this is that no matter how convincing a theory is as to an ancestor being in your line, the only way to know for sure is physical documents or DNA. I did find from this is that I am an exact match with what was identified in the group as the Arkansas Wilburns, whose earliest documented ancestor was William W. Wilbourn who was born in Mecklenburg Co., VA on 12 May 1782 as shown on his tombstone marker in Carroll Co., Arkansas. I had never even considered them as in my line. I just submitted a male first cousin of Vikky Wilburn Anders to be tested. His test showed that that line is also a match. Here we have 3 Wilbourn lines that have the same DNA. There appears to be 1 or 2 other distinct lines in this group, but I can't determine from the available information which these other lines are.

I would like to find someone from the Accomac line that has taken a DNA test with any provider to compare with ours to see if there is any connection or not. If not, then I can narrow my search within the 3 lines that I have proven. It would be very easy if there was an Accomac Welborn tested in the same group with FtDNA Company. Then I could just check their test # and know whether to eliminate the Accomacs from my search.

If any male Wilburn/Welborn/Welbourn/etc. has take a DNA test, lets get together and compare and get some benefits from the test.

Ransome Welborn
Greetings, My wifes name is Debbie. We were married in Huntsville on 2 August 1970 when I was stationed there at Redstone Arsenal. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Ethyl on many occasions. While I was stationed there Ded would drag me to her Grandparents house just about every other weekend and we would eat. She was a grand old lady and I grew to lover her just like my own grannies. I have researched the Wilbourns back to the same dates that you have. I did pick up on William Albert Wilbourn married to Ada 1918 World War I: Record lists him as William Anderson Wilbourn, and he signed it the same. I believe people see the A. and assume it must be Albert like his fathers.

Not finding any written histories of the family. Have you found any?

Hi, Kevin. Thanks for posting. I don't know why I didn't get an email that you posted so I'm sorry I'm responding so late. Yes, I found this information a few years ago, after I had posted here and got death certificates for them. From my records, I think you're wife's name is Debbie. Right?

I have traced the Wilbourn side back to 1736 in MD, where James Wilbourn married Isabel Teague. Our Teague/Tegg side married with the Loftins and the families goes back to 1660 MD. If you need info please let me know.

I cannot seem to find this record again, and I need it. Variant speelings of the names could be playing a part in my not finding the record.

I believe this to be the first marriage of my 3rd great-grandfather Lynn Cowden of Sevier Co., TN and Benton Co., AR, but further research needs to be done on it.
Wilbourn-Key Connection - Edgefield SC

I am searching for the maiden name of my ancestor, Elizabeth Ann Wilbourn. We don't know a lot about Elizabeth except that she was born about 1800 and married Champion Wilbourn about 1815. Betsyann (Elizabeth Ann) is mentioned in the will of her father-in-law William Wilbourn in 1828 in Edgefield County SC as guardian of Champion's children. She is the head of family on the 1830 Edgefield SC Census with three children, two boys and a girl. Listed on the same page (143A) is Tandy M. Key near enough to Elizabeth's age that they could be brother and sister.

I next have Elizabeth on the 1840 Claiborne Parish LA Census, p. 96, as head of household with 3 children. Again she is listed with Tandy A. Key and William Key on the same page. The ages are similar enought to make them all three brothers and sister.

I also have the church minutes from Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Claiborne Parish LA dated August 5, 1837. On that day the following people were admitted to the membership: William Key, Martin W. Key, Tandy Key, Harriett Key, Elizabeth Ann Wilbourn, and her three children Saran Wilbourn, William Wilbourn and Amonet Wilbourn (my family line).

I believe that Elizabeth Ann was a Key, but have no further proof. Can anyone shed light on this information or whether Elizabeth might be a member of this family?

Wilbourn-Croy Connection? VA

Greetings All.

I have recently taken a Y-Chromosome DNA test and, much to my surprise, the results indicate that I am a close match to the Wilbourns of VA. The only problem with that is that I have NO Wilbourns in my tree!

I was wondering if anyone knows a Wilbourn-Croy connection in VA in or prior to 1840?

Also, does anyone have the DNA test results that I might compare my DNA against? I have been told that they are only off by one marker, indicating a probable relationship, but I have not seen the data for myself.

Thanks,
-Johnathan Clayborn

Hi Larry,
Thanks for the info. I've been doing more research since this posting and have seen your Ethel in the files but discovered that she's not mine. She is a cousin, I think, to my Ethel Wilbourn and I believe that Sebe Davis' info got crossed somewhere down the line. I finally got my Ethel's death and marriage records and she was born, Aug 4 1900 (the same year as your Ethel) in Jackson, AL but she died in 1980 in Huntsville, AL. My dad even remembered that year of death after I reminded him. My Ethel's parents were William Albert "Pony" Wilbourn and Ada Florence Flanoy/Flournoy. I believe your Ethel is the daughter of one of William's brothers, either William A or James Thomas. My Ethel also had a sister named, Lillie F Wilbourn b Apr 9 1905. Do you have any info on my Ethel? Boy, sure is frustrating when ancestors named their kids the same, especially when they were born the same year. It took me a while to sort that out. We must still be cousins somewhere down the line. I think we must share William Wilbourn and Lucinda Sharp or Aquilla Wilbourn and Elizabeth Wilson. What do your records state?
Dana

OKay, here's the information I know....

1860: District 20, Giles Co, VA
William Clybern 67
Christina Croy 56
Lemuel Clybern 25
Eliza Clybern 25
James Clybern 3
Elizabeth Clybern 1

I thought that this William Clybern was my ancestor...until I did the DNA test.

1850: District 20, Giles Co, VA
W Clyburn 57
Christian Croy 50
(S)amuel B Croy 16
Sarah E J Croy 9

This is the same family group from the above 1860 census. The Lemuel listed above is incorrectly listed as Samuel in this census. He appears as either Lemuel, or Lemuel B on all other census records. He later marries and has a son, James William Clayborn, from whom I descend. We ASSUMED that he was a Clayborn through and through, but we missed this information on the 1850 census until after we got the results of the DNA test back. Obviously William Clyburn living with Christina is not Lemuel's father. Christina Croy is obviously his mother, but I have no additional information on her other than she was b. about 1804 in VA and that she lives in Giles Co in 1850 and 1860.

The DNA Results point to either Wilbourns or Blackwells(I think?)....not Croy...so even though Christina Croy is his mother there remains a mystery because if Christina Croy is a widow and Croy is her married name, then her husband may not have been the father...but I dont even have her husband's name at this moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

-John Clayborn

Ray, Lu, Emily and all, I am trying to connect some Wilbourn family members to my Robinsons and Brandons in Texas. I believe I have found one connection, maybe it will help.

My Robinsons in Jasper County Georgia, can start with a father named John Robinson b 1786 SC, and his children John Luke, James C, William C, and Martha who were born in GA. Martha Robinson married Samuel J Wilbourn. I am not sure how the Wilbournes of this branch get to Texas, but the children of my ancestor William C Robinson came to NE TX and ended up settled around Wortham, TX. John "Walter" Robinson was born 1857 in GA and lived shortly in AL and LA before coming to TX, and there he lived in Hill and Coyell County and is buried in Mexia Cemetery.

We have similar names and dates and locations, has anyone found a Wilbourn connection to GA yet for your Texans?

Here is my branch in 1850 census of Jasper Co GA:
U.S. Census > 1850 United States Federal Census > Georgia > Jasper > District 46

John Robinson age 64
Mary 64
Gilbert Shaw age 25

next to Samuel J Wilbourn 35
Martha (Robinson, John's daughter) Wilbourn 30
Mary 11
James 8
Samuel 5
Sarah 2

Also next to
John L Roberson (Robinson) 28
Sarah 17
Mary Ann 6/12

(and families: Lindsay, Knowles, Hardeman, Banks, Knight.)
We have a Wilbourn - Robinson marriage that went sour somewhere around mid to late 1800s in Jasper Co GA. I belive the families were from NC, SC and VA but cannot say for sure when and where. I am related through Wm C Robinson, a brother of Martha Robinson who married Samuel J. Wilbourn (he was 35 in 1850 census.) He evidently had debts or in some way was not liked by the father in law and Robinson family. There were several Wilbourn children, and the parents (at least the mother Martha) are buried in the Robinson family plot in Jasper County Georgia. I think some associated names would be Martin, Morgan, Brandon, Morris, and many more Robinson associated names. If you have some locations that would be a good start to check on how that Wilbourn DNA snuck in there! ;-)

U.S. Census > 1850 United States Federal Census > Georgia > Jasper > District 46

John Robinson age 64
Mary 64
Gilbert Shaw age 25

next to Samuel J Wilbourn 35
Martha (Robinson, John's daughter) Wilbourn 30
Mary 11
James 8
Samuel 5
Sarah 2

Also next to
John L Roberson (Robinson, brother to Martha) 28
Sarah 17
Mary Ann 6/12
(and near other families: Lindsay, Knowles, Hardeman, Banks, Knight.)

Hope that helps.
My Grandfather passed away march of 1972. I was seven. A lot of Cherokee and it shcws in all of his children. He was born in 1895 but migrated to California with my Grandmother and a few children; Robert, Alvin, Willie, Peaches, Walter, to name a few. Willie Roy Wilbourn is my Dad. You are one of the few listed in Mississippi and i have searched. But your writings indicate your being from Alabama? I'll keep looking but it's discouraging. Wilbourns From Mississippi???
