Ex-service men in uniform act as Pall Bearers; G. A.R. in Charge of Services at the Cemetery
The funeral of Egbert Wilbur, held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, was attended by almost three hundred friends and relatives. Services at the Odd Fellows’ hall were in charge of the Rev. Mr. Barnes, pastor of the Baptist church, and the W. T. Sherman post, G.A.R., had charge of the burial services at the cemetery.
Egbert Wilbur died on May 2, at Redding, Calif., while on his way home from Southern California. He was born September 20, 1848, at Naples, Ontario County, New York. At the age of 16 he enlisted in Co, K, regular heavy artillery, and served for three years, while a mere youth. He was wounded twice and on January 26, 1864, was honorably discharged for disability, at Fairfax Seminary, Va.
He was married to Miss Ella Rayment at Chippawa Falls, Wisconsin, on January 16, 1871. In 1904 he moved to Sedro-Woolley with his family and was an unusually successful farmer. He retired from active life in 1918, and he and his wife had made annual tours to Southern California for their health. It was on the return from the last trip that he was stricken at Redding, and died at the hospital there from heart failure in a few hours. Mrs. Wilbur was at his bedside until the last.
Mr. Wilbur is survived by his widow, eleven children, two brothers, two sisters, 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The ten children, who came from all parts of the country to be here at the funeral, were: Hiram Wilbur of Couer d’Alene, Idaho;
Elmer F. Wilbur of this city; John C. Wilbur of Port Angeles; Albertus Wilbur of Livingston, Mont.; Ben Wilbur of Seattle; Pearl Wilbur, Los Angeles; Mrs. S. L. Fincrock, Seattle; Clayton Wilbur, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Mrs. C. J. Burns, Los Angeles, and
Clarence L. Wilbur, Los Angeles. Another daughter, Mrs. Ada Green of Cadott, Wisconsin, was prevented by illness from being present.
The members of the American Legion, who acted as pall bears, were Al Stendal, Percy Stendal, Herbert Woodruff, Frank Sheldon, Reginald Simmonds and Frank McLaughlin. Sixteen members of the local post of the Grand Army of the Republic attended the funeral. Scores of cars carried Mr. Wilbur’s many friends to the cemetery. He was one of the best known old-timers here.
