Barak Obama and Wilburn connection

Whilst searching for my "older" ancestors using Zachariah Wilburn abt 1810 (son of William) in Prince George's Co., Md. I came upon the (surprise) Wilburns in the line of Obama's mother. They were from N.C. and included James Wilburn and his daughter (Ruth, I think). I think this was the sixth generation back.
The Wilburns in our line go back to southern Virginia but I don't have any established connection to a James Wilburn. I just thought that fellow researchers might be interested in this piece of information.

Robert Wilburn 1815-1877

Plattsmouth Journal, Thursday, May 20, 1915
Plattsmouth, Cass County, Nebraska

FORTY YEARS AGO IN PLATTSMOUTH

In Memoriam – Robert WILBURN, who died at his residence January 1, 1877, from paralysis of the brain and heart, was one of Cass county’s most reliable and venerable citizens. He was born in Kentucky on the 11th of August, 1815. He was taken from there at an early age to Sangamon county, Illinois, and settled near where Springfield now stands, in the year 1818. He was a friend and intimate acquaintance of the venerable Peter CARTWRIGHT; also a neighbor and associate of the long-to-be remembered Abraham Lincoln, president of the U.S. He accumulated a handsome estate there, and in the year 1872 he disposed of his property there and moved to Nebraska on account of ill-health in his family, which he hoped to improve by a change of climate, and settled in Cass county, near Greenwood. He was a man of the most honest principles, eminent piety and sterling integrity. He carried his religion into practice in every-day life; was a faithful friend, a loving husband and venerable father. He was formerly a member of the Baptist church, but finding no church of his choice near enough so that he could attend regularly, he attached himself to the Christian church at Greenwood,. He was stricken down on Thursday, December 28th, about 8 o’clock p.m. and after three days of patient suffering without a murmur or sight of discontent, he passed peacefully away just as the sun arose on the first day of January, 1877, to receive his happy New Year’s greeting by the blessed angels in the horse of the blest. His funeral sermon was preached on Tuesday, January 2, by Rev. J. Henry WHITE of the Baptist church, Wahoo, Neb., from Job 11:15, 17. The grief-stricken family have the sympathies of all who know them, while the community and church realize that they have lost a useful citizen and exemplary Christian.
William Wesley WILBOURN, ca 1820 -- My Brick Wall

I have come up against a brick wall in researching G-Grandfather, William Wesley WILBOURN, b. ca 1820 in GA. His father's name was believed to be John WILBOURN and he had several brothers and at least one sister, Melissa WILBOURN.

He married Rosella STRONG, daughter of Hiram STRONG and Anna ROBERTS, about 1852. They lived in Cooke County TX where he received a land grant in 1868. According to his daughter, Josie WILBOURN MAYFIELD he moved his family to Little Rock AR and enlisted in the Union Army in 1861. After the war he returned to Cooke County TX where all family, except William Wesley, was enumerated on the 1870 census. He died in Spring Creek, Pulaski Co.,MO on July 5, 1873.

He had 4 sons, William Marshall Wilbourn b. 1854; John Wesley Wilbourn b. 1856; Cyrus F. Wilbourn, b. 1859; Hiram S. Wilbourn b. 1866; and one daughter, Joanna "Josie" Wilbourn b. 1861.

I am searching for any information on William's siblings and ancestry. Any information would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks
Carol Wilburn Buck

I am trying to find information on the Wilburn Family. All I know is that Samuel Arizona Wilburn married Joyce Hickerson and proceeded to have many children including Samuel Wilburn, Robert C., Joseph, Baher C. among others. I know that Joyce and Samuel were both born in North Carolina, however ended up living (and having there children) in Tennessee. Knoxville to be exact.

Any help would be GREAT!!

wilburn/maulsby in MO

I am interested to know if anybody knows any information about the only known child of Wiley R. and Polly Ann Maulsby. Her name was Mary Ann Wilburn/Wilburm and she was b. in 1853 in MO. She first appears in the 1860 census in Dallas Co., IA as the “adopted daughter” of Wiley and Polly Maulsby and she is 7 years old. Then, the 1870 census in Dexter, Dallas Co., IA has her as Mary Ann Maulsby, 17 years old and living with Wiley and Polly Ann Maulsby. The 1880 census lists her as Mary Ann McPherson (their adopted daughter) and in Dexter, Dallas Co., IA living with Wiley and Polly Maulsby and Mary Ann’s children (Ray and Inez McPherson, adopted grandchildren). Mary Ann’s parents were b. in MO. Wiley is the son of Lemuel Maulsby and Ruth Reynolds. Polly Ann is the daughter of William Barnard and Sally Williams.

All I can decipher from the census is that she was b. abt 1853 in MO as a Wilburn/Wilburm and she was adopted sometime before the 1860 census by Wiley and Polly Maulsby.

I am curious to know who her birth parents were. Mary Ann was my 2rd great-grandmother. I have a lot of information on the Maulsbys and the Barnards, but I would like to complete my family tree with some information on Mary Ann’s birth parents.

The name appears in later generations, as in James St.Clair Wilburn who fought in the Mexican War and moved on to the California gold rush.
Has anyone ever found a connection to the Willaim St.Clair of Roslyn Chapel fame or Catherine St.Clair, wife of Hughes dePayens, founder of the Knights Templar?
Wilburns of Dallas Texas

Is this board still in use? Haven't posted in awhile. My grandfather was Henry Frank Wilburn, b. 1900 in Arlington, Texas, my greatgrandfather was William H. Wilburn, b. 1855 Dallas County, Texas on White Rock Creek, married in Denton County in 1872, lived in Collin County then Johnson County then Tarrant County and finally ended up in VanZandt County where he died in 1933. Am in need of his mother and father's names. On the census records it shows both parents from MO. Any help will be appreciated.

John Wilburn Jr. born 1869 in Ohio

Am trying to find info on John Wilburn/Willburn/Wilborn, born
probably in Haydenville, Ohio in 1869. He had an older brother
named Moses, a sister named Caroline, and a sister named
Magdaline or Maggie. He was the son of John Wilburn (born in
Missouri) and Catharine Neubauer (born in France). The last
info I have on him and his father is the 1880 census for Parke
County, Indiana. Any help is appreciated...C.R. "Wil" Wilburn

Wilburn/Satterfield/Murren connection PikeCo, OH

My line comes through William Murren who married Rebecca Wilburn and then Libby Wilburn, her sister, after her death. From my understanding from an article on Sarah Satterfield that has come into my possession, Rebecca's mother was Rebecca Satterfield, daughter of Sarah and sister of Anna who married Russell Wilburn. Rebecca Wilburn's father seems to be Randolph who was born in VA in 1801. Any further info would be much appreciated. For any decendents of the Satterfield-Wilburns, I am happy to send the interview with Sarah that was done in 1875 from her home in Chenoweth's Fork, Pike Co., Ohio. My e-mail is murrenweb@yahoo.com.

I believe
William Wilburn is his father and census records indicate this William migrated from
North Carolina and purchased land in Giles Co. I found deeds on a William Wilburn in
Giles and believe this could be the father
of Lewis Gordon Wilburn (or Wilbourne).
Wilburn family of Kennett, MO

Does anyone have information about the Wilburn family of Kennett, MO? I have a postcard that was sent to my grandmother, Susie (Dobbs) Creameans, from this family. The card was sent from Shreveport, LA to Caraway, AR where my grandmother was living at that time. There is a photo of the parents labeled "Mom" and "Pop," with their four boys standing behind them. The boys' names are Lester, Leslie, Doyle and Theodore. At the bottom of the card it says: "The Wilburn Family Station KBOA, Kennett, MO. I don't know if they were related to my grandmother, were just friends, or her children's friends. Does anyone know if there is a connection between the Wilburn family and the Creameans or Dobbs family? I would be happy to email a scanned copy of the card to anyone who believes they might be related.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your e-mail. I don't know too much either. I do know that Hirum's dad was Edward. Is this the same for your Hirum? We heard that there was another geneology done and this family originated in Wales. Do you have any info on that? Well, it really is interesting, isn't it? Take care Chris, Thanks-Marge

Greenberry Padgett and Elizabeth Wilburn

William Wilburn married Lydia Padgett (d/o John Padgett and Mary Thretcher/Thrasher) in about 1788 in Surrey Co., North Carolina according to "We Padgetts" by Genevera Padgett Carlson in 1952 and according to The Padgett Family History & Genealogy by Robert Williams of Morocco, IN in 1998.
Their son John Wilborn married Sally "Sophia" Padgett a sister of Greenberry Padgett. I have no direct proof on this and the person that gave me the information in 2002 has changed her email address.
I have the parents of Greenberry Padgett as being John Padgett Jr and his wife Nancy Ann "Sophia" Peddycord (source North Carolina Historical Commission Morovian Families of Carroll's Manor, Frederick Co., Md and information in the Records of the Moravians in North Carolina) Greenbury was born abt 1799 in North Carolina and died between 1840-1850 in Indiana. I am not sure if this is of any help to you . (This was posted as a reply to an inquiry so I thought that I would add it to the Wilburn site ... I hope that the Wilburn's find it to be correct)

Children of Hugh Jordan Wilburn and wife Nancy Ballard Wilburn

Looking for anyone descended or researching the above named couple.
Hugh Jordan Wilburn was born abt. 1838 in Giles Co. VA, was the son of Lewis Wilburn and wife Mary "Polly".

Nancy Jane Ballard was born in 1843 daughter of St. Clair Ballard and wife Ruth Meadows.

Hugh and Nancy were supposedly married in Gallia Co. OH in 1864 and in 1866 due to the fact that Hugh was not divorced from his previous wife at the time of his 1864 marriage to Nancy.
Hugh was married at least once previous to Nancy but probably was married twice before his marriage to Nancy.
Once to Sarah UNK and once to Martha? one of those wives maiden name was "Frazier". Hugh was divorced from wife Martha in Giles Co. betw. 1864-1866.

Hugh and Nancy are said to have had 3 children, Charles, Eva and James. Charles b. abt. 1875, Eva abt. 1873 and James abt. 1870. These children are found on the 1880 Giles Co. VA Census with Hugh's brother George. Hugh's mother is also living in that household.

Hugh went on to marry Isabella Jane Holliday and have children, George, Virginia, Claude and a couple more I don't recall their names.
I cannot locate Hugh in the 1880 census nor can I locate Nancy Jane Ballard Wilburn in the 1880 census but as I said above her children are living with her brother in law and mother in law.

It has been told to me that Hugh went by his middle name of Jordan when he lived in Cass Co. Missouri and Witchita Kansas. He died in Witchita and was buried in Hanston Missouri with last wife Isabella Holliday Wilburn.

I am interested in the children of Nancy and Hugh and would like to correspond with anyone who knows about this couple and their children. And can give any ideas as to what happened to Nancy.

Does anyone have information about George Jesse Wilburn and Mary Catherine Jarvis who moved to Grayson Co. TX about 1898. They had sons: Charlie, Frank, Lewis Cass, and Henry. daughters: Sarah, Fanny, Hattie and Kitty. Where were the parents born? I have tried to locate them in the 1880 census, but need a state and county to search.

I need spouse for Lewis Cass Wilburn born in Grayson Co. TX. His sons: John Henry, Lewis Glen, James Franklin, Voit Clyde, Dave A, Alton Jarvis and Donald Keith. daughters: Leona, Katie and Mary. The SSDI shows that some of the children are deceased.

Would like to correspond with anyone researching this family.
It is with deep sadness and great sorrow that I make this posting.

Carolyn Wellborn Haskins passed away today, 17 April 2004. We have lost a friend, cousin and wonderful researcher. She had researched through court documentation all the Wellborn lines of every spelling for about 50 years.

Not only will her family--husband, children and grandchildren miss her but those of us who had come to know and love her through our mutual interests and research will share that loss.

I will do another posting at a later time.
Obit: John Abel Wilburn

John Abel Wilburn, 63, passed away January 23, 2004, after a year's battle with pancreatitis and then pancreatic cancer. Born February 4, 1940 in Mountainair, NM, he lived briefly in Belen before the family moved to Albuquerque, where he attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and then graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1958. After graduation, he was a member for a brief time in the Marine Corps, acted in various stage productions as a young man in Albuquerque, worked in sales and most recently for the Albuquerque Sunport as a skycap. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty; his three children, Shelly, Aaron and Laura; and his two grandchildren, Ashley and Cameron in California; his three children in Albuquerque, Todd, Steven and Amber Wilburn; his sister, Norah Ryan; and four nephews, Michael, Patrick, John and Robert Ryan. He will be remembered as a dearly beloved husband and life-partner, as a devoted father who cared deeply, a sweet and loving brother and as an uncle always willing to be there in a supportive role as mentor and friend. His many friends remember him best as a caring and sensitive friend with a rich sense of humor and a quick wit. John's talents were varied and wide. He loved reading, playing pool, his various vehicles, his home, travel, and above all, people -- of all walks of life or social standing. Each life is a story-song - the words of which remain long after the body is gone, in the collective memories of friends and family. But the melody lingers into eternity - blending gradually into the symphony of celestial spheres heard softly on starry nights in the early morning stillness. And for those who knew and loved him John's music will play ever so sweetly on our heartstrings -- always. According to his wishes, he was cremated and a private home memorial service was held his honor.

Published on February 12, 2004, Albuquerque Journal
