WILDE family in Louisville, Kentucky.

Hello. I wonder if anyone can help me trace the origins - apparently in my own country, England - of the WILDE family of Louisville, Kentucky? I’d like to be able to prove or disprove any link to my own Wilde family (from Sheffield, Yorkshire, England). So far, I have the following information, mainly from US census records.

In 1880, Ann Wilde (indexed as Wild) is in Louisville. She is widowed, with children James (c1862), William (c1864), Robert (c1866), Mary (1868) and Ann (1873). All six of them (and Anne’s parents) were born in England.

By 1900, the family has spread to multiple households, all in Louisville; and Ann is living with her youngest child. The latter is now called Anna W, is married to Oswald A KELLOND, with a son Oswald E. William is married to Cora Lee; with children Alberta, Anna and Albert. Robert is married to Bertha (who other records suggest may be Birta GRENSLING). Mary married William CALDWELL. I can’t find James but he could be the late husband of the family headed in 1900 by Bessie Wilde (1862 England), a Louisville boarding house keeper; with children Gertrude, John, Bessie, Margaret, Janice and Miloe.

I have found the passenger listing for Ann and her children, arriving on the Britannic on 3 November 1879 - so the children aged between about 17 and 6.

My questions centre on who Ann’s husband was (and where he was born and who his parents were), and why she chose to go to Kentucky. Ann must have been fairly recently widowed, and I wonder if she or her late husband had relatives already in the Louisville area. (I have found Mary Wilde c1795 and John Wilde c1811, a farmer - both born in England and living in Boyd County, Kentucky in the 1870 census - but I don’t know anything more about them.)

I should also be interested to know, for a friend, anything about Levi and Elizabeth WILD (both c1838 Yorkshire, England) and their eldest sons Frank (1869 Rochdale, Lancashire, England) and Ernest (1871 Louisville, Kentucky). I have the 1870 census for Levi (a carpenter), lodging in Louisville; but can’t find Elizabeth and Frank anywhere, at that time - and can't find the family in 1880 in America, or 1881 in England. In the 1891 England census, the family was back in Rochdale, with two more children, born there in 1881 and 1882. (I wonder if other children were born in Louisville between 1871 and 1881, and died there.)

Thank you; and good luck with your own researches.

Matthew Wilde.
Finally, I've tried to locate John Thomas Wild's family. The only likely 1841 census is from Humberstone, Leicestershire: John Wild (c1776, farmer) and Sarah (c1786), with John (c1817, farmer), Harriott (c1821), Ellen (c1826) and Sarah (c1826); all born in the county, except for Sarah snr.

It seems to me likely that that is your ancestor's family, and unlikely that we are related. I think to get any further with your Wilds, you'll have to look for parish records from Leicestershire and Warwickshire. Good luck!

Matthew Wilde.

As you say, John Thomas Wild had probably died by 1851. (I don’t think your date of 1905 is right, is it?) I now think that Menham is a probably a mistake for Newnham, in the censuses.

I see that, in 1861, Sarah Wild is with her brother Thomas, now BURBURY, in Newnham; and is still with him in 1871 (now without her son George), when Thomas has become BURLEY. Do you know where George was in 1871? And when did Sarah move to her son's household?

More and more puzzles!

Matthew.
John Thomas Wild was born 3 Sept 1817 in England. Married Sarah Burbery April 1844 in England, There were 2 children, John Thomas Jr., who died in infancy and George Burbery born 7 Jan 1846. George married Alice Smart, daughter of John Gregory Smart. She was born 13 Feb 1905. place unknown. They had four children, Ralph Richardson, my paternal grandfather, John Smart(Jack), Bertha Edith, and a girl we only know as A.E.H. Wild. We assume John Thomas must have died as Sarah Burbery lived with George and Alice. Sarah, Alice and baby A.E. H all died within a 3 yr. period and all three are buried at the Phoenix cemetery in Phoenix, Oregon. The little girl die 13 Dec. 1902, Sarah 3 Feb 1904 and Alice 13 Feb 1905. Goerge is buried in Fruitdale, Calif. but haven't been able to find a date of his death as yet.

Hello Wanda. It looks unlikely, based on the location you mention (Seagrave, Leicestershire), and your spelling of your ancestor’s surname (although that does vary, of course). I thought I’d do a bit of research in the census records, to try to flesh out your details and see if anything else looked familiar - but the family you mention was not immediately easy to find!

I think I have found your ancestor George in the 1851 English census, with his mother at his grandparents’ house. (The only Wild listed as born in Seagrave, in 1851 - so where was his father?) I’ve only looked at the indexing of the record on Ancestry - it’s from Monks Kirby, Newnham Paddox, Warwickshire. There’s Thomas BUSBEY (c1781 Newnham Paddox) and wife Sarah (c1783 Dunton, Leicestershire), with Sarah Wild (c1820 Menham, Warwickshire) and George (c1845 Seagrave); also son Thomas BURBEY (c1816 Menham), and three others who I guess will be servants.

It looks like there’s even more room for variety of spelling in your surname “Burbery” (such as the two above), than for Wild(e)/Wyld(e). Incidentally, the 1844 will of my 3xgreat-grandfather John Wilde was witnessed by the lawyers Samuel and James P BURBEARY; and White's 1852 Sheffield trade directory has "Burbeary James Pashley, solicitor”. I’d never heard of any of the towns and villages mentioned above (Seagrave included), by the way.

Does that help at all? Do you know where your 2xg-grandfather was in 1851? Although it seems unlikely that we are related, I’d be interested to know John Thomas’s occupation, where he and Sarah married, who George married and when the family emigrated.

Matthew.
Mathew, I may not be any connection but I have a great-great grandfather, John Thomas Wild, born in Seagrave, England in 1817. His father too was a John. John Thomas married Sarah Burbery in 1844, they having 2 children, John Thomas who died in infancy and George Burbery Wild born in 1846. I haven't been able to find much out on Gr-gr grandfather. Who his parents were or siblings. We may not even be the same family but thought I'd give it a shot. Sincerly, Wanda(Wilde) Berens

Hello Matthew,
This is Cecily. I found you on the Ancestry.com message board so thought I'd try corresponding this way instead of through Martin.

I had requested info on the following Wildes, all of whom are buried at Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN in the same section and lot: Bertha C. (b. 1884, d 1923), Florence (b. 1887, d. 1936), Hannah L., James, and Margaret E. I have since done some sleuthing and believe that Bertha C., and Florence were both wives of James (b. 1882, d. 1958).

Hannah L. was the wife of John Henry Wilde. That leaves Margaret E. as unexplained.

I've included the link to Crown Hill Cemetery which you may find useful in your research. http://www.crownhill.org/

Hope you're settled into your new house and that your email issues have been resolved.
I am a great great grandson of Emmanuel Wilde. His youngest daughter Isabella Jane was my great grandmother. I have quite a lot of information including a photo of Emmanuel, a copy of his will and obituary from the local Ararat paper. I don't have regular access to a computer at the moment but anyone who wants to contact me can on 0404015233 and would be happy to help if I can

John WILDE born abt 1824 at Ipswich, Suffolk

Hi, I am trying to find out more information about my Great Grandfather John WILDE and his ancestors. John was born abt 1824 at Ipswich, Suffolk, England and is believed to have been a Sergeant in the army. He married Margaret Grisdale on 19 April 1855 and some of their children were born in Maidstone and Canterbury, Kent suggesting that John was stationed there in the army. It seems that the family moved to Kendal in Cumbria where my grandmother Margaret J. Wilde was born on 22 March 1869.

John was later shown as shown as a Chelsea 'Out' Pensioner still living at Kendal where he died abt September 1878.

Any help would be appreciated. Peter Reay.

Hi again
I've looked at my records and I can tell you that Wainwright Bellhouse is buried at Timperley parish church. He died 30/05/1885 and his address was Farndon House, Rusholme.I'm fairly sure my Bellhouses are from the same branch as Wainwright because my great grandmother's brother was Harry Wainwright Bellhouse.I think Wainwright as christian name comes from the marriage of David Bellhouse to Mary Wainwright.I have loads of info and a Bellhouse tree back to the 1600's.My e-mail is d.campion@sky.com if I can help you further.Liz Campion

Liz Campion
Best wishes

? Wilde Found In New Auburn, Sibley Co. Minnesota

I need help deciphering a first name found on a Wilde stone at the New Auburn, Sibley Co. MN public cemetery.
Please go to www.findagrave.com & look there for data & photo. I listed the individual as ? Wilde.
I am in the process of listing the entire cemetery to findagrave, but so far have only found this one Wilde stone. There is clearly a first name on the stone but the script is difficult to pin down as any one name. While at the cemetery I scrutinized the script and can only come up with a possible Albertine, but am probably way off.
In viewing the message boards on Wilde I did notice that some messages mentioned New York as a place of birth. There are several indivduals buried in this cemetery who's inscriptions give the birth locations and the state of New York.
This cemetery was established in 1881.
The dates on ? Wilde's stone reads:
October 12, 1846 - November 9, 1908
Please help me give this person a first name.

Obit - Mrs. Emilie Wilde, Marathon Co, Wisconsin 1935

Marathon Times
Marathon Wisconsin
Friday, May 31, 1935
Page 1

Last Rites Held for Mrs. Melie Wilde

Mrs. Melie Wilde, 81, pioneer of Marathon County for the past seventy-nine years, passed away at her home in Wausau Sunday after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at two o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Carl Artus, in the town of Stettin and at 2:30 o’clock at the Methodist church in the town of Stettin the Rev. H.C. Stahmer officiating. Burial was in the town of Rib Falls.

The deceased was born in Germany, January 11, 1854, and came to Marathon county with her parents at the age of two years. She resided in the town of Rib Falls for many years before moving to Wausau to live. She was married in the town of Rib Falls to Fred Wilde who preceded her in death September 6, 1934.

Surviving are daughters her five daughters, Mrs. August Seehafer, Mrs. Wm. Ristow and Mrs. Carl Artus of the town of Stettin, Mrs. Paul Sinn of Marshfield, and Miss Ida Wilde of Wausau; three sons, August and Albert Wilde of Marathon City and Louis Wilde of Marshfield; thirty-grandchildren and thirty-five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Wilde was a devoted Christian mother. She had a deep interest in her family and home, kind to all her neighbors and friends. This community extends its sympathy to the bereaved children in their sorrow.

______________________
Note: It looks like there was a mistake in this obituary. There was no Methodist church in Stettin, I believe they meant the Methodist church in Rib Falls.

Note: “Melie” must have been a knick-name, headstone states her name as “Emilia”.

Wisconsin Historical Society Madison
Microfilm Number: 1931-1936 P80-4419

Hi all! I have been researching my family tree and have been hitting a few walls and hopefully a few of you out there either have info or could be family?!

My great great grandfather was John Thomas Wilde born in New York City ca 1860. He was one of six children, his siblings were Billy, Annie, Frank, Margaret, and Edward. And I know that his father probably came to the US in 1848 from Manchester, England, but beyond that is where the trail starts fade off.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Tom,

I think I follow the Wilde line i have seen on the various boards. My gr-grandmother was Edith Edna Wilde-Brewer-Smith-Kabbitz from her second marriage to Granville Olney smith from Fulton, IL. (sorry my caps are bad- i am typing one-handed with my baby in my lap! :) ). I belive her father was Thomas Henry who lived in White Bear, MN (from canada). I am new to researching the Wilde branch. it seems you have put a lot of time into it. I live very close to WB if you need any information. I am going to their graversite this summer and will post to my ancestry tree. where is the best place to start to put the pieces of the puzzle together?
