This is not intended to promote any particular surname project or DNA testing service.

Most Wildey/Wilde/Wiley researchers may have noted how the name can switch back & forth... sometimes even by choice. It is a particularly difficult issue in the Hudson Valley.

Y-DNA has provided a way to separate those Wileys, Wildes, Wildeys, etc who are probably related to Richard Wildey (d. 1689, Flushing).

It turns out that those who are descended of Richard or perhaps, descended from Richard's as yet unknown brothers or cousins are Haplogroup G2.

The Haplogroups are the markers of our very ancient ancestors.

One of the most common Haplogroups in Britain & Europe is R1b1, which is a Celtic marker. However, G2 is one of the rarest Haplogroups in nothern Europe. Only 1-2% of British males are G2.

Therefore, if anyone is seeking a way to narrow down their research, they might be able to do so by having the Y-DNA 12 marker test done on their closest male Wilde, Wildey, Wiley, etc relative.

This is the cheapest, fastest test. If the results are other than G2, then the researcher can eliminate those Wildey/Wilde/Wiley families who have tested as G2.

Re: Wildey / Wilde DNA Project - Summary of Findings to Date...

“Wilde” Surname Project Summary Findings and Conclusions so far- November 23, 2007.

The project to date includes 15 individuals with 7 surname variations ; seven individuals with the name ‘Wilde’, three with the name ‘Wilds’, two with the name ‘Whiles’, one with ‘Wiles’, one Wild, and one Wildey. There are two more individuals whose test data are in process and not yet represented in this summary.

From a DNA standpoint, the participants fall into six Y chromosome Haplogroups (B2a1, E3a, G2, I1a, I1c, and R1b1), dividing further into twelve Haplotypes. This indicates the origins of this name group are quite varied.

The surname project at this time is still a small population. Still, within this population, we can draw a number of preliminary conclusions.

First, there are 3 clusters of individuals whose DNA data indicated possible common ancestral origins not previously documented. Within these clusters, there is generally multiple surname variants represented. This indicates that there are surely multiple origins of these name roots, while at the same time, the differing name forms have evolved from common origins, with pronunciation and spellings diverging over time. This means that it is not possible for any individual of these name forms to only consider their own name spelling as possible distant relations. Additionally this firmly confirms that individuals cannot necessarily expect that someone of their exact same surname can be confidently considered a relation. This subsequently means to properly assess relationships and origins more globally, as is the stated goals of the project, a broad group of name variants is required as we have started within the project.

Additionally, for all these name types, we need more participants to properly ascertain with statistical validity these relationships. We also need more genealogy (GED) histories to properly validate common geographical origins, as DNA Haplogroup origins widely published represent ancient locations, whereas many of these migrated prior to the common use of surnames and are therefore not very meaningful in the context of a surname project. For individuals who have not discerned ancestral geographic origins from genealogy data, this infers it is risky to assume published origin data tied to a surname is meaningful for them. We need Genealogies, tied to DNA data.

For these reasons, we encourage all interested parties of these or similar name variations to consider joining this project, and help us enrich our data pool and understanding of these surname histories.

For a more complete description of project objectives, DNA Test Data, project findings and conclusions, please visit the following web site:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Wilde/

Hello Elizabeth!
Just saw your query... Griffing Wildey had a son Griffin Wildey, but he also had a son Eli Wildey - who had a son Griffin Wildey, who married Emily Shultas and they had a son David Wildey, who married Lydia. This is probably your line. I have been researching the Wildeys in all 50 states since 1993 and have constructed a Wildey family graph, connecting all the branches of the family. If you would like to trade information so that I could add your branch to my chart, I can fill you in on the details of your ancestors - back to Richard Wildey(1635-1690). I look forward to hearing from you. I live in NJ.
E-mail JWildey@gardener.com

If you tell me where Clear Creek NY is I may be able to direct you to people researching that branch of the Wildey's in or around Herkimer or Montgomery Counties in
NY. In my search I have found family members I never knew about. If you know of any of his family, search for them. You may get lucky. Good luck! and don't give up, sometimes it takes a long time.

Dear Pat:
Just saw your posting from 9/8/00. Have you had any luck in the past 2 years with your family history? Herbert Wildey was my great-Uncle (my grandfather's brother). My late father was Herbert E. Wildey (named after your grandfather). I knew Ann Wildey & Homer Wildey & his wife, Dot. If you would like to share information on your branch of the family (which I know nothing about) , I'll fill you in on the Wildey family history (which I have been working on since 1993). My E-mail address is Jwildey@gardener.com. Where do you now live? I live in Dover, N.J.

I'm trying to trace the Salt family line and have come to a dead end at Willam Salt and his wife Anna.

William John Salt and his wife Anna Fraser had daughter's who married Wildey brothers. Their daughter Eliza Salt married William C Wildey b. 1854. Their daughter Anna E Salt married Edwin A. Wildey b. 1848. (In Michigan).

I'm hoping one of the descendants of William or Edwin will have more information on the Salt Family line. Or at least know where William John Salt and his wife Anna are buried or when and where they died. Or where Eliza Salt and Anna Salt were born at in Canada.
