Thank you. I had been to that site previously and emailed the owner about Charlotte. At that time, he did not have her listed as one of John McKenney's children. I now see he has updated his site. John fits as Charlotte's father, but I haven't yet found any documentation to prove this. I just have the handwritten note by my grandmother stating that Charlotte's father was lost at sea.

Hi,

I too am related to Lillian Wiles. I am her great granddaughter and still live in Sterling. I am descended from her marriage to George Elliott, through their daughter Lucy. Lillian's father was John Aaron Wiles, b. 6 Jan 1834, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, and her mother was Charlotte Ann McKenna, b. abt 1833. John's father was John Wiles (Wile/Weil) b. 27 Jan 1803 and his mother was Catherine Conrad, b. 18 Apr 1809. I haven't found who Charlotte's parents are yet. I have a brief handwritten family tree by my grandmother that says that her father was a sea captain and lost at sea, and that her mother was from Ireland.

Lennie

I realize this is nearly 3 years after you first put this query on here- I have just started researching the wiles family tree. My dad was Peter wiles, born in woolwitch 1928, his father was reginald Wiles,b.1903, who married Ellen Nora Cull.Peter was their only child.
as far as I know, Reginald had a Brother. Cyril b. 1896, sister, Doris (who emigrated to north carolina and married a w.t. caper) another sister , Phyllis, married but had no children. William Wiles married elizabeth emma crabb or crabbe he is listed as head of household. I dont know if they are part of the same family but hope this helps?

Re: Mattie/Martha Wiles, dau. of Christian/ wife of John McKinley; Brown County Ohio

Just realized why you were thinking the evidence spotty on Martha - I re read my original post and realized I had found the death certificates after I wrote that - I found them on Family Search's lab site for Ohio death certificates. That resolved the question of whether she was Mattie/Martha Wiles and still leaves open whether there were two Christian Wiles, one born 1760 in Wales and one born 8 April 1767 in Lancaster. The other question is whether he married Catharine Meraux as a second wife. There is another vote for Wales in the Obit of Adam B Wiles - it said Christian came to Pennsylvania from Wales. Moved to Ohio in 1808.(confirmation - Christian Wiles was the first sheriff of Brown County, Ohio. He came down the Ohio river in 1809 from Pennsylvania and located in Union Township. Ripley, Ohio at that time was known as Stanton, and was but a small river town. He filled the office of Justice of the Peace in Stanton for a number of years. (Brown County, Ohio Atlas of 1882))There is another report, unconfirmed, that
Christian Wiles was born in 1760 and died February 18, 1837 near Ripley, Brown County, Ohio and is buried on the Fitch Farm, southeast of Ripley, Ohio; married first to a ____ Sherwood, daughter of Solomon Sherwood of Blenehasset Island; married second to Catherine Mero in 1787. She was born in 1769 and died April 18, 1846 in Brown County, Ohio and is buried on the old Fitch Farm, near her husband. (no record of a marriage to Miss Sherwood found). The DAR lists him:DAR Index lists: Charles Wiles b 1760 PA d 2-18-1837 OH m Catherine Meroe Sgt PA. A Christian Wiles is also listed in the Pennsylvania Archives as having served as a private 2nd class, in the company of Captain Phillip Duck, First Company, Third Battalion, Lancaster County Militia. He was living in Elizabeth Township, according to a return dated 1780. But there is also the record of a Christian Wiles Sr.,a private in the Revolutionary War, joining the company of Lieutenant Volkert Veeder, and the Regiment of Colonel Frederick Fisher, in Tyrone County, New York. (Roster of state Troops, page 515, Archives of New York. Vol. I.)

So in sum, I still do not know where he was born or when. If he served in the Revolutionary War in 1778, he was NOT born in 1767, but the 1760 date would work. If he was born in 1760, he is not the man in the church records born in 1767 to Peter.Peter arrived at Philadelphia on 29 September 1753 on the ship "Rowand" from Rotterdam through Cowes. He, along with the others who were not of English birth were required to take an oath of allegiance to the King of England, which he did on that day.
[2] The Application for Membership NSDAR, #230483, Annabel McEldowney Matthews papers give the date of Peter's marriage to Elizabeth (surname unknown) as 1760. That date must have been assumed from the birthdate of their first child. No marriage record has yet been found. It might help nto trace Peter, who had 2 brothers who lived to adulthood and had families, Philipp & Fredrich - perhaps there might be clues in those lines. Peter's will says nothing that proves his son is the one that married Catherine Mero and moved to Ohio.

I hope this helps - I am still open to any proof. Lyn

Yeah,

I realized after the third reading I had mistyped Christian's birth year.

The line is supposed to be:
From or born in Alsace-Lorraine
Arslett WEYL
Johann Jacob WEIL b. 1654 Susanna BOSSILIE
Johann Jacob WEIL b. 1697/98 Anne Marie DICK
Johann Peter WEIL b. 1734 Anna Elizabeth UNKNOWN
Born in US
Christian WILES b. 1767 Catherine MERO
Frederich Marion WILES b. 1802/03 Anna May GORDON
Christian WILES b. 1852 Anna GORDON
Samuel G. WILES b. 1889 Allie McCOMAS
Ernest Edward WILES b. 1918 Yuki HIRAKAWA

Given the lack of data other than first name and age, I think it's pretty slim to say Martha McKINLEY is Martha WILES, but I understand the logic of the link to Joseph and Emma next door, but to base Christian's birth place on her census record when Frederich Marion WILES 1880 census record says Christian was born in PA is difficult to support.

Chris

Juliette,

Curious what is the source of Christian WILES (father of Frederich Marion WILES, b 1802 in PA) birth in Wales?

That Frederich b. 1767, Lancaster, PA, is the son of Christian WILES, seems a settled issue.

The TWO schools of thought I have encountered so far are that his father Christian was born in Wales and the other (the majority of other researchers who may be copying from each other) that Christian was born in PA and is descended from Johann Peter WEIL who is from Oberbronn, Elsamlothringen, Alsace-Lorraine, FR.

Any thoughts,

Chris Watson
S-I-L is a WILES
I am not A part of this family, but I recently pulled a obit for George Washington Wiles , I took it off because it mentioned his Wife as Ella Teets, but when I checked the census he had one wife through 1930,Mary A. Dodge . His children were Homer Philo Wiles, Herbert Allen Wiles,Sevilla Pearl Wiles. He must have married Ella after Mary died in 1930. Herbert Allen Wiles Sr. Is on the 1930 Census With wife Janet H, Children; Herbert Allen wiles, Charline m, Janet G.. Maybe this is the family you are looking for. Glad to send you this information, Have George's death certi. & Mary's also. I did a group sheet on this family. Phyllis

Hi laurie. In about 1952 A great uncle gave my sister a history of the family. It started with William Wiles born in 1750 in Wales.Came to america and married and had 2 sons Luke and Joe born before 1775 .When the american revolution started he joind and fought for his new country. He was taken prisioner and kept on texel Island till 1783.He was released and came home to find no trace of his family. He searched but could not find out what happened to them.He married again And moved to Davidson co in Tenn.and had children. We were only given 2 names A John P and a Joel P. There were more children I do believe.John married and had a family and Joel marrieb A rebecca Bryan. They lived in Tenn for some time then moved to Dover ,Missouri. This was passed to us from one of his male decendents.Long before computers and all the info that is out there today.Hope this clarifies for alot.

DNA is nice, but the afordability of it is too much for research point for me. :) I find it a very interesting aspect though.

Ok here is what I have this line:

1) Luke Wiles (1670 VA - ca 1749 VA) md. Margaret Stovall (1679 VA - aft 1749 VA) had following:

Stephen (my line), Robert, Thomas, Luke, 2 unnamed females

2) Stephen (b ca 1722 VA) md. Mary (unknown maiden name) had: Thomas (my line), Joseph, Robert

3) Thomas (b.ca 1744 VA) md. Eleanor Pinson
had: Mary (my line), Lewis, Stephen, Luke, James, John, Pinson, Thomas, Hiram, Gillam, Unnamed female (I think her name is Eleanor)

As my computer crash I haven't dug everything up YET. But this gives the basics.

I am curious where the William from Wales comes in as I have never found anything regarding this man. Repeatedly hit a hard wall when I try to get past the original Luke.

Hope this helps. :) Laurie

I have seen him also listed as Wildes. It seems that court records I have come across (need to relocate) show that it is the same person as both Wiles and Wildes. Old spelling was not always clearly consistent. Will be doing more work on this bunch as soon as I get a chance.

I'm not sure where the question came from. I logged onto the local library web site with my library card. The site gave me access to Ancestry as they have a contract with them. I was then able to access their information. They put the census online. A copy of the actual census page from 1790 to 1930.
Thank you so much. I haven't found alot on some of the siblings and I guess I know why now. Can you tell me where some of them are buried? You can email me if you want to greenfrog83@cs.com Was Linville the one who was married to Mattie Walker?

Elsie was my grandfather's (Linville Wiles) sister. I can remember her when I was a child. She had very dark hair, was short and very sweet. In addition to my grandfather, she had (I believe) 5 more brothers (Alonzo, Uriel, Garn, Corbet & Erastus) and 2 sisters (Ina & Maxie.) Lon, Garn, Ina & my grandpa lived in the Traphill area. Uriel, Corbet, Erastus & I believe Maxie all lived in W-S. For some reason I thought Elsie lived in the Hayes area but I am not sure of that.
