Wiley yDNA project information
Genetic genealogy continues to play an ever more important role in determining familial relationships. The tiny portion of the entire DNA molecule – called yDNA – is passed from father to son nearly unchanged for many generations. This means that all male Wileys who are descended from a common ancestor would have the same yDNA pattern. And all male Wileys who are descended from a different Wiley ancestor would also match each other but NOT match the descendants of the first one. And so forth . . . .

Genetic genealogy in conjunction with traditional paper genealogy is a very powerful tool.

Although the testing seems quite expensive it can give results not gotten any other way. I know that I broke through a 30-year brick wall with the test.

From now until the last day of 2009 the leading company that does surname-yDNA studies is having special pricing. We would welcome you or your male Wiley relative into the study.

You can go to the website www.ftdna.com or you can write me for details. I am happy to help in any way that I can. (I am a volunteer for the Wiley surname project and do not get paid a single penny for enrolling you!)

Jody McKenney Thomson
Jmthomson at gmail . com
Hi!, I am seeking help on a Margaret Wiley. She had a son named Lucian P Lowry in 1851-55, born in Indiana. Possibly Indiana, PA? I DO have a funeral record for Lucian which list her as his mother. The mothers (Margaret Wiley) birth state is listed as Indiana only, no town/city. The fathers name is listed as George B Lowry born in Maryland, no town/city. Lucian Lowry funeral record states that he died in Newark, Texas.
If you have any information or hints that you can share please email me at pberry54@comcast.net

Would love to get in touch with anyone descended from Wiley's who lived in Owen County, KY. My ggg-grandparents are Salem Wiley and Sarah Ann Marshall. Salem was born in Scott County, KY Dec 20, 1821, married Ellen Hunley (1st wife), 2nd wife Sarah is my ggg-grandmother - m. Feb 1847. Child from 1st wife John R. Wiley, 1st child from Sarah Marshall - Benjamin Franklin Wiley was my gg-grandfather b. 3-28-1848, m. 2-1-1872 to Sophronia Rebecca Terry. Other children of Salem and Sarah - Melvina, Lewis D., George A., Polly Frances, Rosa White, John Salem. My gg-grandparents Benjamin and Sophronia left Owen Co, KY in mid-late 1870's for Hickman County, KY. Later on, Polly (married George H Tackett) and Rosa (married Jackson Roe Tackett) moved out to western KY as well.

If you're descended from a Wiley that attended Stamping Ground Baptist Church it's likely we have a common ancestor. Salem Wiley attended that church at least until 1848.

-Glenn Wiley

Adding to this info - there is a possible brother of Margaret: George Wiley b. 1828 Ohio. He marries Hester Burns (possible sister to Margaret's husband Charles) on 10 March 1850 in Carroll Co., Indiana, and later resides in Perry Twp., Tippecanoe Co., IN.

Have not been able to identify parents of George and Margaret. However, Margaret's marriage record indicates she had "neither father, mother, nor guardian" living in Indiana at the time of her marriage.

I am looking for Harry W Wiley, he was born in 1883 in Michigan and died in 1959 in California. He, at one time, was married to Nan (Fair) Wiley. I don't believe they had any children. I know that Nan died in 1949 in Cortland, NY; and at the time of her death, they were not living as husband and wife. I did find where Harry was living in 1920 which was in Chemung County, NY. I believe Harry had a brother named Ed(d)and their parents were: James W Wiley and Mina Mueller.
Thanks

Not sure if same family but very interesting. My grandfather Jeff Warren Wiley married Martha Louella Reed I believe in Mississipi or Missouri. I also believe that my grandfather had several brothers whose names were like WT and I believe a JT (don't know there full given names) etc...That was how my grandmother said their names when she would tell us tidbits about the family history. They have both passed on several years ago.

Thank you so much for your reply... Would love to explore the possibility of a link to your Wiley line. The info on David came from a biography and his obit. I have no info on his parents or siblings, but do know his parents were born in Ireland and that his father's name was William (noted on David's death certificate). I have tracked David in Belmont and Guernsey Counties in the census in the 1840's and '50's, and note that Jefferson and Belmont counties have a common boundary, so perhaps? Please contact me directly at kmessimer1@aol.com. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Re: Wiley and Cato in Arkansas

I saw your posting on the Wiley - Cato connection in Arkansas. I was looking for some information on Cornelius Wiley and noticed that there are some things on the net that show he is connected to the Cato family. If you go to Google and type in Cornelius Wiley you will find some info. I think he was the brother of My gggrandfather, Stephen Wiley, who was the son of Stephen Wiley from N.Y.

They moved to Rapides Parrish, La. about 1802, and then moved to Old Miller County, Ark, where they were kicked out when it was discovered Old Miller County was really in the Republic of Texas. Cornelius is connected with the Stephen Wiley family all through La. and Ark, and they have to be the same family as that name is too uncommon. Stephen Wiley, the father, later went to Texas and died in Nacadoghes, Texas about 1828, I think. Samuel and Stephen Wiley went back to La., Cornelius married a Cato and stayed in Ark, Thomas went to La. and John went to Texas. Later SAmuel, Thomas, and Stephen all went to Texas. I think Stephen Sr. had a brother named Cornelius also, and that they were probably the sons of a William Wiley. I think Cornelius Wiley is in the 1820 census of La., or maybe the 1810, if there was a census then. He seems to have been the first one to have arrived in La., or at least the first one on the census.

Hope this helps to give you a start. I notice that Cornelius matches perfectly with the DNA. Looks like they are Celtic, which is what I would think as the name Wiley came from Scotland, and belongs to one of the Clans. Can't remember which one at the moment.

Joyce Moore

She then moved back to Iowa and passed away in about 1904 at the age of 28 or 29. I do have a pic of her on my ancestry page. You can see her pic in the Sanderson family tree and she is listed as Mary Mable Easton. She went by Mable though.

Kathy:

It would definitely be of value for us to "put our heads together" on this for two reasons: one is that family tradition does report that William Martin Wiley had a brother named John and the other is that there is some sort of family connection between this man and the Cato family.

Did your John Wesley Wiley live his entire life in Arkansas? Have you found him in census records? I suppose his death certificate did not give the name of either of his parents?

The only Wiley family that I know anything about is William Martin Wiley who lived in western Arkansas and probably a while in Texas when he was a young man. As you can tell from this thread there are probably links between William and another family in Arkansas . . . and the family - before William was born - likely spent some time in Louisiana before settling in Arkansas.

So I have no way at the present time of connecting to your family that sounds as though they came directly from Maryland to Iowa and then south to Oklahoma.

There is a tradition that William Wiley's family (his father perhaps - or maybe his grandfather) originated in Pennsylvania. So it is possible that your Wileys and William's Wileys are related.

We have a participant in the Wiley yDNA surname project. Are you in that? If so, do you have a match to some group in the project. If not - you should participate! The results of the test go a long way to proving just which family yours belongs to!!

Joyce:

It would be very exciting if your ideas about the Cornelius Wiley family pan out with additional research! I had wondered if Cornelius' father, William, was related to the Cornelius Wiley families (several of them) found in earlier records in Louisiana. As you said, Cornelius is a somewhat unusual name.

What did you mean when you said "Cornelius matches perfectly with the DNA". The participant in the yDNA project does match with John Wiley of Kentucky/Illinois. Is that what you were refering to?

Re: Wiley yDNA database

Brad:

It would certainly be interesting to be able to compare your Wiley yDNA results with a specific group in the FTDNA Wiley surname project. It looks as though your line is to Abel Wiley b. 1780 in Maryland and d. 1867 in Jackson County, Illinois.

I am not able to access your yDNA results but you could either post them here, send them to me personally, or add your number to www.ysearch.com which is a huge database that includes the values of participants from all possible companies. Your privacy is assured since you are given an alphanumeric password.

There is also an intrinsic problem in comparing results from one company to another since I don't know how good Ancestry's testing lab is or how good their technique and controls. But we should give it a try.

I have some compelling reasons to think that you could be related to the same line that I am researching.

Can you tell me who Margaret's parents are? My family also migrated from Ohio to Indiana at this same time. I have tons and tons of Wiley's in my tree.
