Rita,
It's Bea, Evelyn Stephens' granddaughter, again. I have recently gotten the death cert for William Wilhelm, Shelbyville, IL. On the cert it lists his mother and father and the fact they were definitely from PA. I am onto something that may identify Jacob Wilhelm as his father. I would be willing to share the cert with you, if you will contact me at beatjr1@netzero.net. Have you made any headway? I believe also from some land sales that Samuel Wilhelm may have been a sibling of Williams, and he bought land there in Shelbyville. Look forward to hearing from you. Bea

My husband said someone in his family changed their surname to Williams from Wilhelm.

Am guessing these name changes were based on fear?
I have a similar issue in my family but it's a different surname change. We don't know why and the last member of the family who might have known died on Monday.

They are known to be in College Point, New York thru to 1942 according to records found. Sometime after this point there is rumors that he goes to Chicago perhaps to be near a Uncle.
Peter and Catherine (Hershberger) Wilhelm are my husband's 4 great grandparents.

In the "History of Morrow County, OH 1989" p.170 there is a picture of Jacob & Lavinia Henry and it states in part: Martin Henry, his wife Juliann and their eight children came to Ohio in 1837 from York County, PA with other family members including Juliann's parents Peter and Catharine Wilhelm and sisters Elizabeth, wife of Andrew Craley and Catharine, wife of Jacob Snyder and their families. they settled in Congress Township, Richland County. Soon they found themselves in a new county. Morrow County being formed in 1848.

The sister Elizabeth with her husband Andrew Craley are my husband's 3 great grandparents.

Records of Lutheran and Reformed Congregations (formerly Stehli's, now St. Luke's), Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania, 1773-1835 lists Elizabeth's birthdate, parents as Peter and Catey Wilhelm, sponsor as Elizabeth Gabel.

Not sure how this all fits with your York Wilhelms as I have a little more info but some of it is conflicting and not verified.

Becky

If you want anymore censuses looked up reply to this or one of the other posts I made. Sometimes I just need a clue like a first name or a place. I can't seems to find an Alpheus or his wife Mary in 1880. There is no 1890 census. If you went thru directories of the area in the town library or the state genealogical library you might be able to track them better.

My Wilhelms were Polish/Russian and somehow German. I think they were German Farmers invited by Katherine the Great of Russia to help out. In the end they were treated as outcasts and unwanted, however, they produced more farm products than the natives.

I am glad I helped.

Cody,
I am not sure what you are trying to say. Is your father's parents names Donald Wilhelm and Helen Unknown. Where did they live and what was your father's name? Around when could they have been born. I usually figure the parent is between 15 and 50 having children and take into account when the first child is born to figure it. Did you know any of your fathers siblings?

Michael--I am so THRILLED to finally hear from a Wilhelm from Seligman, Missouri. We are cousins, right? My father was Lyle, brother of your dad, Lendsey,& of Curtis and Will. I grew up hearing from my grandmother (my mother's mother) who raised my brother and me after my mother died--I was six when she died--about my Wilhelm grandparents. I met Rosa and Curtis and Lendsey once at my dad's funeral, but did not see them again after that. Lyle is buried in Wichita, Kansas. I, too, went to Seligman in search of Wilhelm relatives a few years ago, but came up with nothing helpful.

I was just in Houston two weeks ago--on a my way to Costa Rica

This is the first informtion I have received from anyone since I joined Ancestry in 2001, and I would love to hear further from you. I want to trace roots back as far as I can and was just about at the point of giving up.

My brother's name is Bob. He is two year's younger than I am. He lives in Oregon on a ranch

Thanks for contacting me. I look forward to hearing more from you.

best regards,

jacqueline wilhelm kielar (born in Seligman)
J.C. Wilhelm killed in Miles City, Montana

Hi All,

I am looking for some information. I have a very brief newspaper article regarding a relative and was hoping someone could see if they could find out more.

All the snippit says is "Information is wanted of the relatives of J.C. Wilhelm who was killed at Miles City, Montana, September 7, 1886."

J.C. is John C. WILHELM son of Charles L. Wilhelm and Sarah Jane Painter. He was born in 1863 in Stark County, Ohio. I had originally sent the request in because this snippit was listed in the Obituary index for Stark County and was surprised that all that came was what I typed above.

If anyone does research in Montana and can locate an actual obituary for J.C. Wilhelm I would greatly appreciate it, even if it is an article detailing how or why he was killed there, I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Jackie

jknancy99@sbcglobal.net

Arthur R. Wilhelm (1925-1975) Preston County, W. Va.

Hello!

I am looking for information on the family of Arthur R. Wilhelm (1/20/1925-9/11/1975). He was my father's step-father, and though he died before I was born, I would like to know more about his family. So far, I have found an obituary, but beyond that I know very little.

Here is the obituary:

Terra Alta—Arthur R. Wilhelm, 50, of Corinth, died Thursday at his home.

Born in Preston County, he was a son of Albert R. Wilhelm, Oakland, and was a veteran of World War II.

Also surviving are his widow, June (McCrobie) [sic, it was spelled McRobie] Wilhelm, two stepsons, William D. Upole, Corinth, and James R. Upole, Falmouth, Mass.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Anna J. Metheny, Manown, and Mrs. Carole K. Novak, Brunswick, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. Ilene Friend, Oakland; Mrs. Marie Conley, Trenton, N.J.; and Mrs. Dorothy Glotfelty, Oakland; a brother, Wayne W. Wilhelm, Trenton, and four grandchildren.

The body is at the Fike-Watson Funeral Home where friends will be received from 2 until 4 and from 7 until 9 p.m.

A service will be conducted there tomorrow at 2 p.m., with Rev. Charles Teets officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Cumberland News, September 13, 1975
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As I mentioned, beyond this I know very little. My dad is fairly certain that Art (that's what he went by) had an uncle named Frank Wilhelm, but didn't know of any other aunts or uncles. Also, his mother *may* have been named Anna Trout, but that is a guess at best.
Any info. that anyone can share will be greatly appreciated!
Gail & Penny -
I've been subscribed to this surname board for along time, and this is the first time I've ever heard of any Alsatian Wilhelms. Mine come from Roeschwoog in the Canton of Bischwiller, Bas Rhin. This is the same general neighborhood as Wolfskirchen, northeast of Strasbourg. My immigrant ancestor, Mathias Wilhelm, left France and came to western Pennsylvania in 1828 with his wife and five children. There is a story that he went first to Warren, PA (which was pretty much a frontier then) but the 1830 census has him in Pittsburgh. I have found him, his brothers, his siblings, and his wife and her family in the civil records of Roeschwoog. Those have been microfilmed by the LDS. I am wondering whether there is any connection between these Wilhelm families. Wilhelm is a very common Germanic surname.
David
Hi Gail ~
I just read your message today, after finding out I have Wilhelms in my Karcher data base in France. I live in Delavan WI now. My grandfather Henry karcher migrated here in 1910. I actually(and my parents) knew Henry Dillenbeck. I knew Jaime Dillenbeck also. Are they any relation to you?
They must be.I have heard the Hummel name also.
I have traced my Wilhelms back to 1800 in Wolfskirchen, Bas Rhin, France and there were many Wilhelms connected to this family, besides the Karcher name. Jacobs, Koehl's, Quirnins, Reebs, Jungs(Youngs)Sauers, that descendant's still live in Delavan.
Wolfskirchen was such a tiny village that relatives kept marrying cousins over and over again, with the same surnames. I see Wilhelm a lot.
Just thought it was coicidental, and also your Kocher you are looking for looks a lot like the surname Karcher.
My Aunt lived in Jacksonville also. She is dead now but she was a Karcher, and married a Ed Sapp.
I hope we can connect our Wilhelms in Germany/France. Wolfskirchen was once part of Germany, t's now France.
Penny Karcher- Kresl
David ~
Very Interesting story of your Wilhelms. I just made the Wilhelm connection in Wolfskirchen.. I know a Henri Wilhelm is mentioned as a Witness on my grandfather, Christian's birth certificate, which I take to be an Uncle of my g grandfather. Christien Karcher died in 1920. Henri was more than likely then a brother of Catherine Wilhelm my 3rd great grandmother.
Beyond that I know nothing more at this time but will update from time to time.
Penny
Re: relatives of Wilhelm family of Seligman, Missouri
Hello, My name is Michael Wilhelm, son of Lendsay Wilhelm. My father has been deceased for about 15 years and is buried in Seligman. My brother Kim and I both live in Houston, Tx area. My mother and I recently traveled back to Seligman and could not find my fathers gravesite because there was not a headstone. We are trying to locate the local cemetery so we can complete this. My dads brother Bill had a son also named Bill and the last we knew he was living in Colorado. Curtis has been deceased for over 25 years and is buried in Kansas. He has a daughter living in California and a son Douglas who is living in Kansas. I have heard my dad and mom say many kind words about your father Lyle and how handsome he was. Unfortunately I never got to meet him. Thank you, Michael
If there's a chance that he's "my" George Wilhelm, (b. 1818 in OH or PA, d. 1883 in IL), I'd be interested in the information you have.
Re: Frank Wilhelm St. Louis Missouri
I have a Friedrich Georg Wilhelm born about 1832 in Germany living in Washington county, Illinois (which is very close to St. Louis) in the 1870 census record. It appears there are no other Wilhelms in this county. Do you think there might be a connection with your Wilhelm?
I'm trying to find his extended family. Our Frierich may have been from Duesseldorf, Germany but the census record lists him from Hannover. Our Friedrich married Dorothea Buhrkul.
Connie Robanske
Kennewick, WA
