Hi Darlene,
Glad to help. Wendell was born February 18, 1892 in Elwood, Indiana of Herman Francis Willkie and Henrietta (Trisch). All 4 of his grandparents came from Germany in or around 1848. The name is said to have been originally spelled as Willcke. His father and mother were first school teachers and later lawyers, his mother being the first woman admitted to the bar in Indiana. Wendell was one of 6 children: Julia (never married), Robert (an official at Seagram's), Fred (also at Seagram's),Wendell, Edward (all American tackle at Annapolis and later in charge of salmon canning for Libbys), and Charlotte (married Commander Paul Pihl- a naval attache at the American Embassy in Berlin. Wendell received his A.B. degree at the University o0f Indiana in 1913 and taught history at a high school in Coffeyville, Kansas. He also coached the track team. He later went back to the university to study law and received his law degree in 1916. He then went into law practice. During the first world war, he and his brother Robert entered the service. Wendell became a Lt. in the field artillery. He married Edith Wilk of Rushville, Indiana while he was in training at Camp Knox, Ky. While serving in France he was promoted to captain. He later became a businessman and had business disagreements with Roosevelt and you know the rest.
I might mention that Wendell had an aunt that was a doctor. Edityh, his wife was born in Nashville on August 6,1890. Her parents were Phil and Cora (Smith) Wilk. Wendell and Edith were married on January 14, 1918. They had a son, Philip H. Willkie, born in Rushville, Indiana on December 7,1919. He was a banker and a lawyer. Philip married Virginia Z.Adamson and they had 4 children; Wendell,Philip, Frank, and Peavey. One final note-- Wendell's middle name is Lewis. There you have it. I have some additional info.and if you feel that you may want it, please get in touch.
