Thank you for the details of the Wilke Family. I appreciate your efforts in compiling them. Unfortunately I cannot access the Washington Digital Archives at this time - site appears to be 'down'. I believe there are living Wilke Family members descended from 'my' Wilbur Wilke. Can you suggest the names of any Seattle daily newspapers (print as opposed to online) to which I could send a letter to editor. The Sydney(Australia) daily newspapers to which I have access, have a RSVP section where family history inquiries can be 'posted' free. If that a common feature of Seattle newspapers?

The Washington Digital Archives (www.digitalarchives.wa.gov) have an marriage record for Dawson Wilke and Margaret Buzzard on 07-09-1938 in Seattle (see http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/ViewRecord.aspx?RID=82182A... for a free scanned copy of the original document.)

Note that the surname is 'Wilke' and not 'Wilkie'.

In earlier records Wilbur appears to have gone by Dawson, and he turns up with that given name in Seattle in the 1920 census with his (presumed) parents, Christopher and Augusta Wilke. That record lists his birthplace as Montana, and his parents from out East.

Later records list him as Wilbur D. Wilke, so presumably the D. stands for Dawson? His SSDI record (also listed as Wilbur D. Wilke, SSN 531-09-8647 issued in WA) has a birthdate of 27 Dec 1916, death date of 21 Sep 2000 (last residence in Maricopa County, AZ), and a quick search of the West Valley (AZ) Genealogical Society obituary index turns up an entry for a Wilbur 'Dawson' Wilke, published on 22 and 25 Sep 2000 (see http://www.azwvgs.org/Obits2000.htm for ordering info.)

Also, if you didn't have this information already, their son Duncan died in Seattle on 7 Feb 1953 at age 13 (see http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/ViewRecord.aspx?RID=768841... for source.)

I don't believe my Wilkie family is connected with this one, but I know the free WA sources pretty well so it was easy to do the look-ups.

I am searching for the family of Wilbur Wilkie and Magaret Buzzard (b1921 d1989)who were married in Washington State, USA (Seattle area?) in about 1940. They had twin boys Duncan and Dawson.

Dawson Wilkie married Carolyn (maiden name unknown) and had twin children, Douglas and Diane, and then Gregory.

Margaret Buzzard's mother, Marion nee Bird/Haigh, was my great aunt.

David Wilkie - Pennsylvania resident - death in 1909

Today I found a grave in the Philadelphia National Cemetery (Section F, Plot# 531) for a David Wilkie, who appears to have died in Pennsylvania in 1909. I can't place him within the larger family tree. Even though my mother's Wilkies were in the Carolinas, I know that we have blood relatives all over the United States, Canada, and Australia. Does anyone know more about this David Wilkie?

Re: Sir David Wilkie / Isobella Lister

Hi Pam,
According to my records Isobella Lister was the third wife to Rev. David Wilkie (the first two bore him no children). She was born in 1763 (Scotland) and died in Kensington, England in 1824. They were married in 1781 in Scotland. After her husband's death in 1812/13, Isobella moved to Kensington, England to be close to her son Sir David and daughter Helen both of whom had moved to England on or about 1805. The only other information I have about Isobella's family is that her father's name was supposedly James Lister.

I hope this info is of some help to you.

JACK WILKIE

Hi

Has anyone got any connections to the Wilkie Family tree in particular to his mother Isobella Lister. We have a family heirloom given to my great great grandfather George Lister that could suggest that we are in some way related to Sir David Wilkie through the lister line on his mothers side.

I am missing the link and am not sure how to go about finding it as I cannot find any birth/marriage/death dates for people in Scotland since the 1841 census.

Any ideas will be greatfully appreciated

Thanks
Pam

pambolus@hotmail.com

A cousin just recently contacted me looking for information on the Wilkie tree. I know plenty on the Diamond tree and am looking for a connection perhaps with a Wilkie who can help us out with the Wilkie tree.

Mary Wilkie married Hugh Diamond had 12 children who all lived in the United States. Mary's brother, Robert Wilkie married Margaret Black and lived in Canada.

Does any of this look somewhat similar to anyone's family tree??

Hi, The only information we have about the Wilkies and the Reids, her mother is what we posted in April 2001. Mary Wilkie married a John McCorkle also from Scotland. They lived in Donegal County Ireland for many years until the famines started, returned to Glasglow and then the McCorkle brothers settled in Canada and the Pennsylvania. There are some McCorkles today in PA and NJ. The rest of us Smiths decend from a Fannie McCorkle, daughter of Mary Reid McCorkle. The family connections are numberous across the USA, many I do not know or have met personnaly. I have male cousins whose middle names are "Reid", "Wilkie" and "McCorkel" all brothers and son of a Wilkie Smith, their dad. I have proof of Smiths we decend from back to his 1802 will, but cannot document before his service in the Militia in Revoluntionary War. Some claim back to England and France, but I am from Missouri to say "Show Me". It is the same with my maternal Cassidys of Ireland, Watsons of England and the Balliets of France and German States.

I just keep looking for anything about Scotland and documentation that may lead there. None so far. I have been at this since 1996, I just keep trudging along on the high and the low roads, in hoping I get there the same, if information can be found.

I appreciate living on an island. I and some of my family lived on the island "Territory of Guam" in the Pacific Ocean 10,000 miles from here in PA. Guam was 4 to 12 miles wide and about 30 miles long. The typhoons and one big earth quake were interesting.

So Long Dave

Hi,

thank you for replying.

Your uncle, was Sgt, Eric Charles Wilkie, 1899093, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who was killed along with six other men in the crash of a Lancaster aircraft on the night of 16-17 March 1945.

My connection relates to two of the other men, both New Zealanders (but not relatives), and research has lead to contact with relatives of five of the seven men who were onboard the aircraft when it crashed. There is more, but it is too much information to post here. On conjunction with the relatives, a very detailed history of the seven men and the circumstances of their fate has been compiled.

By the way, an article that has pictures of your uncle appeared in a 2008 issue of the British magazine 'Flypast'...

Cheers

Rod

Dave:

I saw this on Rootsweb and had to ask a question. First my name is Allan Gillingham, and I grewup in Gillingham, Wisconsin. Most of my ancestors started in PA and then went to Ohio and then migrated to Wisconsin starting in 1851. What I have interest in is the Gillingham Cemetary in Clearfield County, PA. I have never heard of this an I am curious to find out if any ancesters are buried there. Do you have any more information on this cemetery?

Allan Gillingham
Highpockets34@cox.net

Thank you for your very quick response.

This one really is a mystery. I also have the marriage cert. and have not been able to go any further.

Because his surname is missing I wondered if he was a Wilkie, or if that name had been created. I can't find anything on his father at all.

Perhaps if either of us finds the key we could share the info.
Cheers,

Sherry

Thank you for your reply. I am especially interested in this tree as he is my gggrandfather and I know little about him.

Elizabeth Frances Wilkie nee Teralger (mother Mary Elizabeth and father Croker)has a daughter Elizabeth who's husband is William Whitehead.

Elizabeth was born in Spain and came to Australia in 1825 when she was 16 years old.

James Francis Wilkie married Elizabeth Tralba (confusing but the same person I believe)as again the son-in-laws name is on the death cert.

I think you are about where I am.

My great, great grandmother is Janet Francis Donaldson, and great great grandfather David Francis, who's son James Francis is my great grandfather and great grandmother is Jane Moat.
They had 5 children and my grandmother is Clara Wilkie married to William Jonathan Brearey. They had 4 children, one of whom is Dorothy Grace, my mother. She had 2 girls one of whom is myself, Sherry. I have had 2 boys.

Can you give me information regarding how you found David Francis details about his birth. I have not been able to find those details at all. All searches regarding him have resulted in nothing.
Cheers,

Sherry

David Francis Wilkie born Pitt Street Sydney 1840, married Janet Donaldson MacDonald in 1859. His daughter Ellen Celestine married Percy Ernest Joseph Godfrey. They had a daughter Nellie who gave birth to a daughter Lola who produced 2 children. This is the line I am tracing. Nellie went on to marry Milton Griffin they had a daughter Bristol who produced 3 children. I am interested in any details that can expand the Wilkie line. What I have is sketchy but it is growing. James Francis Wilkie married Mary/Elizabeth Trevalva? Do you have anything further on this?

Thanks Sherry,
It was a bit of a fluke when I found the Marriage Certificate 1859/000201 using Janet Donaldson McDonald/MacDonald. It came up with a marriage to David Francis, no surname? Father's name James Francis? stonemason, mother Elizabeth?. Janet's parentage Alexander McDonald & June Donaldson. Alexander was a shipwright. Death Certificate of David Francis Wilkie, stonemason, father James, mother Mary Trevalva?. Death Certificate 1898/000604. I have not been able to find a birth/certificate but one of the records indicated he was born in Pitt Street, Sydney. It would seem he was born near the Presbyterian Church and like many church records they were thought to be the property of the minister not the church, so when the minister moved so did the records.
Keep in touch

Hi,
On Ellen's Birth Certificate her parents are listed as Wilkie and McDonald. This is where the birth place of David is noted. As I mentioned before David Francis was born in Pitt St. I have found a record illustrating Pitt Street about this time and there is a baker by the name of Wilkie mentioned. Next door to the bakery was the Free Presbyterian Church. His Marriage Certificate does not give a surname but his death Certificate and those of his children show Wilkie and McDonald.
Janet Wilkie's Death Certificate given James McDonald as her father. David's Death Certificate show James Wilkie as his father.
Maybe the minister was a little slack.
Sue

Hello Ida,
I am living in Rhode Island, but am formerly from Massachusetts where the 4 children of Captain John and Melissa also lived at one time or another. There were two sons and two daughters that I know of, and both sons later returned to the Lahave area of Lunenburg County.

Your first message indicated that you were "looking for anyone who is related to a Captain John wilkie who married Melissa Huey". However, your second message seems to imply that you are mostly concerned with William Huey and his paternal line of relatives. If that be the case, then I can't be of any help. However, if you indeed do need information about John Wilkie and his family line, then perhaps I can be of some help.

The Wilkies of Lunenburg County today consist of no more than about a half dozen families (if that many) scattered throughout the County area along with some relatives in the Halifax area, the northern mainland of Nova Scotia, and Prince edward Island. None are closely related to Captain John (most are distant cousins). That's not to say that Captain John does not still have close relatives still in Nova Scotia. He does, but they are through marriages of the various female members of the family. Captain John's brother, Captain Charles Malcolm Osborne Wilkie was married twice and had 5 known children ( 2 sons and 3 daughters). One son died young (25) at sea with no known children. The other son moved to Ottawa (NFI). However, at least 2 of the 3 daughters remained in the area and had families.

Some basic information:
Captain John Burnham Wilkie, b 1881 at Pentz Settlement -- d 1954. Married Melissa Martha Huey, b 1884 -- d 1951. They lived in West LaHave and had at least 4 children ; Winona Olivia (b 1899 or 1903 - d ?), Mildred Leone (b 1908 - d ?), Eugene Malcolm (b 1925 - d 1995), John Edwin (b 1927 - d 19720. Winona and John Edwin are believed to have remained single while Eugene had at least one known child named Annette from his first wife, Brenda Hiltz. His second wife was Marilyn Malone.
Mildred also married twice and had 4 children, John, Donald and Winona by Warren Richards and a son James by Henry Mercer. John and Eugene are both believed to have moved back to the LaHave area from Massachusetts.

Good luck with your search, and if I can help you with any specific questions about the Wilkie line please let me know.

JACK WILKIE

Hi Jennifer Mahoney from sunny Western Australia from Jack Wilkie from sunny Eastern USA,

I can't add much to what you have, but I have extracted some information from the IGI that is not contained in your brief description of the James Wilkie family. James is said to have been born in St. Andrews on March 6, 1751, while his wife Janet is said to be "of" St Andrews being born ca 1760. They are said to have been married in St. Andrews about the year 1781. Note that the spelling of White was often interchanged with the spelling as Whyte in those earlier days. I note that you didn't list the names of their 5 children that you noted in your message --- but in any case my records show the following 6 children all born in St. Andrews/St. Leonards: Helen, b March 16, 1782; Christian, b Nov. 28, 1783; James, b March 6, 1786; Thomas, b March 6, 1786 (a twin), Janet, b Feb. 3, 1788; and lastly, James Lumsdane, b july 12, 1793.

Possible parents to James Wilkie could be David Wilkie, married to Isobell Lumsdane at St. Andrews/St. Leonards on Sept. 6, 1741. I say possible only in that James Lumden could have been named after his grandmother if she was indeed the aforesaid Isobell. I do know that David and Isobell had two Known children ( John, b 1742 and Helen, b 1746). However, the listing of their children may be incomplete, and James ( b 1751) and others could have been born to them later. It's worth checking into. There is also a marriage record in St. Andrews for a Janet Wilkie (possibly the dau of James and Janet) to George Brown on April 8, 1810.

Good luck with your search,

Hi Carol,
This info may or may not connect, but one never knows unless one checks it out. The timing and the locales are similar. A William Wilkey (b NC 1818)is believed to have moved to Columbus, Georgia and eventually to Russell County, Al where he married Mary E.? (b Ga 1828)ca 1845. They had six known children, of which one or more moved to Texas. One of their children was named John Wilkey and was born ca 1850 at Russel Cty. Al. He could be the John (JR) that you are seeking. I don't have any further info about John, but I do have more info about John's sibling named Willis Benjamin Wilkey and family who settled at West Falls County, Texas. Other bits and notes include a J.R.Wilkey who was listed in the Austin Cty census for 1880. The family name also appears to have survived into the later years in Neuces Cty where 6 Wilkey deaths are reported to have occurred between 1964 and 1994. Good luck with your search,
JACK WILKIE

Hi Carol,

Sorry, I don't have any more data on J.R. Note that the info I gave you was for Austin County, not City. Also, the 1880 census was not a federal census, but a state of Texas census (page 41 / I.D. # TX 314118635). There were several Wilkey families (possibly related) that moved from Georgia to Alabama to Texas during the 1800 to 1850 era --- but it may also have been the routine for many other families as well during that time period for whatever reason.

The John Wilkey that I mentioned to you before also had a brother James born ca 1850. Maybe James was the James Wiley Wilkey called Johnnie that a correspondent of yours had mentioned on the 'board'. There is a possibility that a member of the John and James wilkley family might be of help...There are several male members of that family still in Texas that you might try and contact (perhaps still in the Falls County area. A brother to John and James was Willis Benjanmin Wilkey who married and settled with their 7 or so children at Falls County, texas. One
of their children was Julius Benjamin who also had 7 children (still in the Falls area). His children were born from the late 1920's through the 1930's so some are probably still alive. The names of his 3 male children are James Terrell Wilkey, b 1932; Julius Harold Wilkey, b 1929; and Joe Roy Wilkey, b 1937, d 1992 at McLennan county. Joe had all daughters. I only have the married name of one daughter (Leah Lucille, b 1958). She married Joseph Real. James Terrell had a son Terrell Lee Wilkey, b 1956 married to Dianna Carriker. They have a son named Benjamin, b 1983. Julius Harold Wilkey had 6 children (3 boys and 3 girls). The boys were named Harold Gene, b 1950; Jerry and his twin bother Larry, b 1971. I don't have the married names of the 3 daughters. I don't know where any of these kids are living today, but I'll bet some are still in the Falls County, McLennan County or West Falls County areas. A look see through the white pages might turn up a name or two.

JACK

The cemetery is located about 12 miles east of Clearfield Borough near Lecontes Mills, in Girard Township of Clearfield County, PA. It is ina rural unpopulated area. sloping hill surrounded by woods access by a dirt road with a closed Methodist Church and an inactive Gillingham Grange Hall at the edge of the cemetery. I will be going near there in a few weeks to visit someone who is 94 years old and will ask how the name came to be. I'll check the old section to see if any Gillingham stones are there and legible. The Clearfield County Historical Society and Museum web page has a message board (not too active) and info as it is totally volunteer. It is a three hour trip for me one way. I plan to do court house work, visit friend and back in one long day. Hope this helps you.

I'm still working on getting over to the ancestrial home. There's a gathering of the clans in 2009 and we thought we might go for that & then head up to the highlans to where you found the family's old farm land.
Barb

They married in Johnson County (Kansas City) in 1887. I don't now how they met or why they married there as Mossie had been living in Bourbon County Kansas with her parents unless they met through a sister who might have been living in Kansas City in those days. Later they lived in Bourbon County. My notes show that Ed may have been born in Pennsylvania or Maryland.

Looking for any information on descendants of Alivin "Ed" Wilkie and Mossie Peelle. They had 3 children Ollie, Belle, and Edward. All children were born in Kansas in the 1890's. Mossie died at age 40 and Ed years later. He lived for sometime in Florida. The last information on his son Edward is that he was living in Kansas City, Missouri. Belle married Fred Jackman and possibly moved to Jackson County, Oklahoma. Would like to exchange information on this family.

I have the research on this WILKEY line you are searching for. Go to www.tribalpages.com and search for WILKEY. Once you get there look for my website: All My Cousins-Wilkey/McGowan.... Then email me so I can send you the invitation and password . I will be more than happy to add any additional information you may have to that website. Thanks.
