Asa Wilkins 1757-1836 NH, VT, NY

Does anyone have the names of the children of Asa Wilkins? He served in the Revolutionary War for Amherst, NH, where he was born. His pension papers show he was living in Fairfax, Franklin County, Vermont when he applied for the pension in 1818. In 1820, he referred to a son Daniel and to a daughter, Lucy. Lucy was 22 years old at that time. In 1824, a son Asa was 8 years old. In 1835 he was living in Stockton, Chautauqua County, New York, with three sons. He also had married daughters. The names of these children and of his wife or wives are not on record. He died February 24, 1836. Two of the three sons in Stockton were Robert and James. He is buried with James Wilkins and Algeline wife of James Wilkins. Robert, his wife Betsey and an Orpha Wilkins are buried together and are in the same cemetery. I don't know who Orpha was. She was actually living with Robert in the 1850 Census but was 80 years old while Robert was 66 years old. Could she be an Aunt or sister?

My third great grandfather, John Wilkins was born in 1784 and different census records list him being born in several states: Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He married Susannah Riggs in 1804 in Vernon, Sussex County, New Jersey. They had 9 children all of whom were born and raised in Vernon. Around 1837 the family relocated to Woodhull, Steuben Cty, New York, and in 1842, John and Susannah moved to Darien, Wisconsin. All but one child, eventually followed their parents there. I have not been able to connect my John Wilkins to any of the Wilkins families in New Jersey. There are so many Johns in those families without dates or dates that don't match my John's. A genealogist sent me a record that stated a John Wilkins bought land in 1702 and his heirs still owned the land, but I could not connect him. It's frustrating.

Hi, I hope you are still interested in Robert Baxter Wilkins. I am researching him also in the hope that I may find the death date and burial of his second wife Roxy Rose.
She was married first to John Dillon in Defiance Co OH. Roxy was a younger sister of my 4th gr grandmother. I knew about son Joseph and I believe the 1860 Delaware census that shows Joseph was born in NY is incorrect. All other census show that he was born in OH. I have found the first marriage info and other children of Robert Wilkins. Please contact me to exchange info.
Carole in CA
caroleg@roadrunner.com
Martha-2 LAKE (John-1); m. (1) Obadiah WILKINS; m. (2) John GRIGGS; Gravesend, Kings Co., NY

Excerpt from “The Griggs Family of Gravesend” (New York Genealogical & Biographical Record, October 2005 - April 2006)... Refer to article for omitted footnotes ([ ]).

IDENTIFYING MARTHA, WIFE OF OBADIAH-2 WILKINS AND JOHN-2 GRIGGS,
AS A DESCENDANT OF THE LAKE AND SPICER FAMILIES OF GRAVESEND

Based on the evidence provided above, there can be no doubt that John-2 Griggs was married at Gravesend to Martha, the widow of Obadiah Wilkins, by a license dated 5 December 1684. If Martha was not the daughter of Obadiah Wilkins but rather his widow, who then were her parents? In his brief mention of Obadiah Wilkins,[ ] William H. Stillwell did not identify any wife for Obadiah but he repeated the erroneous claim that he had a daughter Martha who married John Griggs. However, in his account of the Lake family of Gravesend, Stillwell revealed Martha’s origins:

Martha Lake daughter of John (1) was born in Amersfort (Flatlands) baptized in New Amsterdam May 20 1652 married Obadiah Wilkins of Gravesend, son of William and had issue, Martha, who married John Griggs, and William.[ ]

As demonstrated above, Stillwell was in error in stating that Martha, wife of John Griggs, was a daughter of Obadiah Wilkins rather than his widow. However, was he accurate in identifying Martha as the daughter of John-1 and Ann (Spicer) Lake of Gravesend?

On 20 May 1652, “Metje” was baptized in the New Amsterdam Dutch Reformed Church as the daughter of “Jan Leeck”[ ] with witnesses Albert Albertszen, “Jan Hutjesse” [John Hutchinson],[ ] “Susanna Bresers” [her maternal aunt, Susan (Spicer) (Wathen) Brasier], and Engeltje Mans.[ ] In the primary published accounts of the Lake family, Metje’s baptism is mentioned yet she is omitted in the listing of John1 Lake’s children.[ ] Nor is “Metje” mentioned in Charles Henry Masland’s circa 1983 genealogy.[ ] Consequently, most researchers have simply assumed that this baptismal record pertains to Margaret, another daughter of John and Ann (Spicer) Lake. However, Metje is typically identified as a Dutch equivalent of Mattie (Martha) whereas Margrietje (or its diminutive, Grietje) is the Dutch equivalent of Margaret.

Thus, John-1 and Ann (Spicer) Lake did have a daughter named Martha. Was she identical with the wife of Obadiah-2 Wilkins and John-2 Griggs? A court record pertaining to both men probably provides the confirmation. In 1675, John-1 Griggs sued William-1 and Obadiah-2 Wilkins for crop damage caused by their cattle in the past:

Jo Grigs pl agt wm wilk deft for cattle damidges . . .
one 7: yeares agoe and apprized by P. Symson
Peeter Symson testifies . . . hee . . . apprized ye Dammidg . . . in ye yeare 68
Jo Griggs pl agt Obdiah for dammidges in his Corne att ye springe by cattle yt have beene putt in to ye ffield and yt ye sd damidg was prised & Judged to 3 Skiples of wheate & hee pduced Carson Johnson a wittness
Carson Johnson testifies yt in mrch last hee see 7:Cowes uppon his Corne (all Cowes) & yt Jo Lakes daughter fetcht ym off wch was more Cows yn ye deft had further ye deft testifies yt hee did not knowe whose Cows any of ym was:[ ]

From the excerpt above, note the key phrase, “Jo Lakes daughter fetcht ym [them] off.” John-2 Lake Jr.’s only known daughter was born well after 1675, so it was certainly a daughter of John1 and Ann (Spicer) Lake who “fetcht” the cows of Obadiah Wilkins. Who else would have had the opportunity and the motivation to prevent Obadiah’s cows from causing more damage other than his wife Martha?

In 1682, as detailed above, Obadiah Wilkins added a codicil to his will in which he “appointed these my friends whom I repose confidence in namely Samuel Spicer William Williamson William Golding and John Tilton junr . . .” to watch over his children. Samuel Spicer was a brother of Ann (Spicer) Lake; William Goulding was the husband of the Margaret-2 Lake (John-1); and John Tilton Jr. was the brother-in-law of Samuel Spicer. If Martha was the daughter of John-1 and Ann (Spicer) Lake, then Obadiah’s friends Spicer and Goulding were also the uncle and brother-in-law of young widow Martha.

In 1683, Martha Wilkins resided next to John Lake Jr. and two doors away from John Lake Sr.[ ] and, as shown above, the household of John Griggs Jr. was listed as two doors away from that of Ann Lake in the 1698 census. On 25 May 1700, “J. Griggs” shared lots 38 and 39 on Hugh Garretson’s Neck or Gelder Neck with John Lake.[ ]
Despite Stillwell’s other errors, it is logical to conclude that “Metje Leeck” survived to marry both Obadiah Wilkins and John Griggs. Like John-1 Griggs, Martha’s father, John1 Lake, was not one of the original settlers of Gravesend and—despite claims to the contrary—his origins remain unknown. However, the descendants of Martha (Lake) (Wilkins) Griggs can claim a line of descent from an original Gravesend patentee—Martha’s maternal grandfather was Thomas-1 Spicer.

Arent Van Curler had obtained a patent for one of the plains on Long Island and in the present town of Flatlands . . . he leased the whole to Thomas Spicer. Here Spicer lived when the committee of settlers of the future town of Gravesend were looking for a site and here they met and decided on the location.[ ]

Martha may have been named in honor of Thomas Spicer’s mother, Martha (Grant) Spicer,[ ] or an intermediary namesake descendant. In his will of 29 September 1658, Thomas Spicer left “to [his daughter] Ann Lake, wife of John Lake, 60 gilders [sic] for the benefit of her three children,”[ ] one of whom would have been Martha.
William-1 WILKINS of Gravesend, Kings Co., NY & Descendants

To my knowledge, "Gravesend Settlers: Ancestors and Descendants," a manuscript by William H. Stillwell (1832-1895) held by The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, has never been published.

One must proceed with great caution when using Stillwell's manuscript; it is a vexing mix of the known, the possible and the impossible. It is evident that Teunis G. Bergen relied heavily on Stillwell's manuscript in the preparation of Early Settlers of Kings County. Every statement made by Stillwell and Bergen must be validated. For an example of the significant corrections that will be found through such analysis, please refer my series on the "The Griggs Family of Gravesend and New Jersey," as published in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. (Volumes 136-137 [October 2005-April 2006]).

Publishing a fully annotated and corrected copy of Stillwell's manuscript would be a very worthwhile project. I have no intention of tackling that challenge but I hope that others will be inspired to do so! With that goal in mind, I have posted Stillwell's accounts of the LAKE, SPICER and WILKINS families at my web site:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~streeter/l...

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~streeter/s...

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~streeter/w...

Unfortunately, I do not have excerpts for other families but the manuscript probably includes many of the families listed at these sites:

http://www.longislandgenealogy.com/moodygrave/LadyMoody.htm

http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Settlement_of_Gravesend%2C_Long...

I will be happy to post additional excerpts from "Gravesend Settlers" if anyone is able to provide them.

Within Adobe(c) Reader(c), select View \ Rotate View \ Clockwise and then select View \ Zoom \ Fit Width to view this document as intended. The 8.5" x 14" page size of the photocopies available to me has been retained; however, if you desire, you may print these documents on 8.5" x 11" paper by selecting File \ Print \ Page Scaling \ Fit to Printable Area.

Please contact me if you are interested in sharing scholarly research on "Gravesend Settlers," especially the early generations of the GRIGGS, GULICK, LAKE, OPDYCK/UPDIKE, SPICER and WILLIAMSON families.

Perry

www.perry.streeter.com
I did recognize one name related to my Wilkins line in a way. Gatewood. My great grandfather was John Wesley Wilkins who married Laura Alice Carter. Laura Alice had a sister who married a Gatewood. Her name was Margaret and she was called "Aunt Mag". I recently discovered that Laura Alice Carter Wilkins' parents were William Anderson Carter and Amanda Hill Carter.

Thomas Wilkins to Elizabeth Barrett
If I do NOT have the marriage certificate, which I think I do, I will order one.
However, I now have the quandry of Elizabeth on the 1901 census when it appears she was being "kept by Parish" and had with her a grandson whose name I can not decipher!
On 1901 the census she is shown living close to neighbours, who I know were closely related, with one Raymond Nath??? Despite enlarging it 10 fold it is still illegible. I have done an extensive search and cannot locate this grandson, was he hers through her own family or a descendant of a Wilkins?
Any news would help........ that said having waited 4 years for a reply to my original message I do not think I will hold my breath........ that said thanks for those who did reply recently

VA Wilkins/Lynch/Miller Conundrum - help please

Hi All,

Family history (as written by her grandson) tells me Nancy Wilkins (1810 to 1894) married David Dudley Lynch (~1810 to ~1861). Sadly, I don't know the parents of either, but per census record reporting, both were born in VA, I believe the Norfolk area. David died and then she married Benjamin Miller. Of course, there's more, but that's the short and sweet of the family lore.

So I've been searching for marriage bonds/records for a while and a kind soul sent me the following:
- There were no records found for a Wilkins-Lynch marriage
- 4 Mar 1829 - Nancy Wilkins marries Benjamin Miller (performed by her father Frederick Wilkins)
- 27 Aug 1840 - Mrs. Ann Miller (Ann being a nickname for Nancy) marries David Lynch

So I'd love to hear from others... what do you think? What's the likelihood that the family history is wrong/switched around? Does it seem plausible the above - that Nancy marries Ben then David, and that this is the same woman? Am I pulling at straws?

Thanks, your input will be most appreciated!
