Searching for the ancestry of Elizabeth Williston, born say 1742. She married Ephraim Lane (born 1737 Hingham, MA) at Boston on 4 NOV 1762. They moved around several times and was found at "Plantation of Starling" (now Fayette), Lincoln (now Kennebec) Co., Maine in the 1790 Census.

Children:
Elizabeth born 21 AUG 1763 Sherborn, Middlesex Co., MA
Jeremiah
Ebenezer
John
Nathan born 16 FEB 1771 Salisbury, Essex Co., MA
James

It is likely Elizabeth was a granddaughter of Ebenezer Williston (b. Milton, MA 12 FEB 1681/2) who married Judith Vee (Veazie?) at Boston on 8 JUN 1705.

Ruth Williston Story - Conneticut

Tuesday, July 29 2008

Note: This is not my family. Just found the story interesting.

LAWRENCE, Kan. - A letter detailing the mood after Truman defeated Dewey that was lost in the postal system for nearly 60 years recently turned up in the mailbox of a Kansas woman.

Xan Wedel found the letter, postmarked Nov. 11, 1948, in her mailbox Friday. The envelope was stamped with "Return to sender" and "Found in supposedly empty mailbox."

The letter was addressed to a Ruth Willisten in Rockfall, Conn., but it never reached its destination. It was sent by Gertrude Gilmore, who lived at Wedel's house in 1948.

The letter states, "All Lawrence is in mourning since the election," during which Harry S. Truman beat Thomas E. Dewey for the presidency of the United States. The election would have taken place just days before the letter was postmarked.

Gilmore also talks about her new Westinghouse electric refrigerator and the new pastor at Plymouth Congregational Church.

Wedel said she thinks the Gilmore family built her home in 1890 and that Gertrude was one of their daughters.

"It's impossible to really know what may or may not have happened," said Lawrence Postmaster Judy Raney. "No matter what, we always take it and go ahead and send it on."

Wedel said she is preserving the letter. She photographed the envelope and four-page letter and scanned them into her computer. She said she now has interest in the family who built the home she's lived in for nearly four years.

"It would be really interesting to see if they are still in town or have any descendants that would know the history behind her and who she was writing," Wedel said.

___

Family Tree DNA sample #113965

There is a DNA sample submitted under the Williston surname that is a 35/37 marker match to my name which is Willis. The interesting thing is that this Williston donor is closer to the line of Britton Willis(1758) of NC SC and KY than it is to the other Williston family members. In fact the variation in the DNA of 2 of the Williston members is so different that there is no way possible they have a common ancestor within 1000+ years. The haplogroups aren't even the same. I would love to make contact with the owner of the above listed sample. Only 2 possibilities exist. The Williston sample donor had an ancestor who was a Willis.....or I have an ancestor who was a Williston... the DNA tells the tale.

Mike Willis
pmed8@hotmail.com

Dear Barb,

THis is based upon conjecture.

In the 1850 Census for St. Lawrence County NY the city of Stockholm, Lucinda Williston is listed. On the same page is the family o f Andrew Barrett and his wife Eleanor. With that family is an Esther Williston. Both, Eleanor, Lucinda, and Esther were born in Canada;

in the 1860 Census for St. Lawrence County NY, the city of Stockholm, Betsy Williston is listed with Andrew Barrett and his wife Eleanor.

In the 1860 Census for St. Lawrence County NY, the city of Stockholm, a Lucinda Chapman is listed with the family of Hiram Chapman with her son Freddy.

In the 1870 Census for St. Lawrence County NY, the city of Stockholm, a Lucinda Larned is listed with her presumed husband, Hiram Larned with her son Frederick and 3 other children.

Based upon this evidence, I connected the 4 daughters together. I believe that this is circumstantial evidence and certainly bears further research. Perhaps a letter to the town historian for Stockholm, NY?

I hope this will be helpful to you.

Karen Harris

Elisha Williston was the son of Elijah Williston and Lucy Kellogg. I have tentatively identified him as the father of at least 5 daughters: Elinor, Ester, Alice, Betsey and Lucinda.
I have attempted, for years, to learn of the Williston ancestry and have had little luck. My grandfather Elliott Williston and his brother "Uncle Will" Williston came from the Carolinas to cut timber and run a saw mill in Leslie and Perry Counties in Kentucky. I recently found a message on RootsWeb.com regarding my dad, and grandpa Elliott and a list of other ancestors: Elliott Whitfield Williston, Charles Willard Williston, John Burt Williston, Willard Williston, Capt. John Williston, John Williston, Joseph Williston.

If you have more detailed information I would certainly love hearing from you. My e-mail is: wild4uk@cinci.rr.com.

Thanks!

Alice Hearn Williston

Hi Karen, I am almost positive that the Alice Hearn who married Lorenzo is from my Hearn family. I am trying to track all descendants. The 1900 census shows Alice, b. DE, parents b. DE. The Alice I am looking for was b. 1868 in Delaware, but her father Thomas Robert Hearn was b. NYC and her mother, Hannah Mole, was born in England. Hannah Mole died 1871 and Thomas remarried Dec 27, 1879 Rebecca Mathewson, b. 1848 DE. Thomas died 1883 in Hartford, CT and Rebecca died May 1893 at 214 Maple St., Holyoke, MA. If you have any further information on Alice or her family I would be grateful if you would share it with me. Alice's father Thomas Robert served in the civil war 17th CT Infantry as principal musician. Thomas' brother John P. was also a musician and served with him, his brother James was a private in the same infantry and died in the Civil War. His brother Samuel, my gg-grandfather, served from NYC as a drummer boy in the 5th US Infantry, and re-enlisted in the 7th US infantry. Their father, James Henry Hearn, b. Co. Cork, Ireland, served from NYC in the 7th Infantry during the Mexican War. Their service as a family is extraordinary. I have all pension files and extensive extended family info, but they did not leave very many descendants that survive to this day, as far as I can tell. I'd love to hear from you. Thanks very much.

Hi,

You know, I never did anymore research on this branch. I am related through the adopted daughter and not a true descendant of the Willistons. I was hoping to find more info on the adopted daughter, Jennie (nee Caroline Dunakin). I have been side tracked by other research. Hopefully one day I'll be able to look into this family further in hopes of uncovering the parentage of my gg grandmother Jennie Williston Thurlow.

Amelia

Hi
George Dudley Williston, son of John Henry and Helen Newcomb Williston, was born Feb 27, 1867 in Cleveland, Ohio. He died June 19, 1928 in Ft Wayne Ind. George and Ina appear in the 1900 Cenus for Fostoria and the 1920 Cenus for Ft. Wayne, Ind. (The Obit of G.D. Williston appears in the June 20, 1928 "News Sentinel, Fort Wayne", page 19. The Obit says he was a Manager for the D.M.Sears Company of West Main St., That as of 1928 he lived in Ft. Wayne for 10 years and that he was a Vestryman of the Trinity Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Muncie Lodge, F & M; Ft Wayne Consistory, Scottish Rite, Masonry, and of the Exchange Club. He was survived by his wife, Ina Belle, one son, Dudley M. of Indianapolis, and two grandchildren) Dudley M. Williston was born as indicated by Karen and I show he died (or was buried) April 2, 1955 in Ft. Wayne. Burial is as Karen listed. Dudley Williston and Frances Louise Hamilton were married February 14, 1912 in Muncie, Delaware County, Ind.(Vol 2, Book C-20, Page 45). They had 2 children: Mary June, born March 2, 1913 and Elizabeth Ann, born in 1917.
Neil Williston

Hello
Although this isn't my line and I can't prove most of it, I will tell you what my notes say. I show Elizabeth Griggs,
B: 2/21/1804 in NJ married William Sidney Williston who was born 8/21/1812. William S. Williston was the son of George and Achsah Crossett Williston. George Williston, B: Feb., 1781 in Suffield,D:1819 in NH; Achsah, B: 8/28/1798 in New Salem, Mass., D: 8/22/1843, was the dau of Edward and Elizabeth Caddy Crossett. George Williston was the son of Consider and Rhoda King Williston of Suffield, CT and he was the son of Joseph and Hannah Stebbins Williston, the son of Joseph and Mary Parson Williston, of Springfield.
In the 1840 Census, 4th Ward, NY City there is a William S. Williston, who I believe is the William Sidney mentioned above. Can't find anyone in the 1850 or 1860 Census but didn't spend sufficient time looking in those years . In 1870 there is a William Williston, age 60 (1809), born in Mass married to an Elizabeth, age 58 (1811) born in NJ who I believe is the subject of your search. This couple has 2 children listed with them-Horace (1840) and Gertrude (1847). I believe there is a son George (1847), dau Mary (1845) also; and he may be the George Williston in the 1870 and 1880 US Cenus in Turin, Lewis County, NY.Hopes this helps you track down further information.

Hi
I show John Henry was born 6/15/1833 in Fayetteville, N. Carolina, the son of William King Williston and Laura Hoskins or Mary Brown. He married on 10 or 11/271854 or 57 Helen Newcomb the dau of Eliphalet and Mary Newcomb. Children are as you show. He died 3/20/1891 in Fosteria, Ohio. George Dudley was born 2/21/1867 and married Ina B. Micker on 4/30/1890 in Fosteria, OH
I think that JH was a Captain and then a Major in the 41st Ohio Inf in the Civil War.
You might want to check out the Memoir of the Newcomb Family, page 399.The US Censu starting with 1850 thru 1880 has some info that might help you. I have found their names on the LDS site three times only Edith was listed as Eda, Edna, Edee. Elisha was listed as Elisha Kellogg Williston and he had a brother named Nathaniel Leonard Williston. This information was on the Family Group Record of Elijah Williston and Lucy Kellogg.

Hope this helps
