I am sorry. In the last post I was mistaken. I took a look at my tree and James B. Willoughby who I descend from was the son of Tarlington Bates Willoughby. His grandparents were William Willoughby and Sarah Tarlington. I have Tarlington Bates Willoughby's Headstone on my tree. Along with his wife Diana Caldwell. I was fortunate to have a volunteer through Find A Grave take a picture of their stones for me. Anyway, would still really like to hear from any cousins. Sorry for the mistake.

Trisha

Hi Penny, I am a direct descendant of James Willoughby, son of Sarah Tarlington and William Willoughby, and have recently come across his Death Certificate showing he died in Michigan. I can give you an invite to my tree which has quite a bit of Willoughby Family Info. if you are interested. Or you can email me at pellertrisha@yahoo.com. I'll send a copy of this to your email as well. Thanks for the post.

Trisha

Am planning a trip to PA and hope to hit the Willoughby
hot spots. Looking at Allegheny County. I know that William's son, James did die in that area, in Perryville.
And then there are all the mentions of Juanita, Mifflin, etc. but can't pinpoint exactly what location they are discussing. If you have any ideas on how to see some Willoughby sites in PA, or if there is some research I can do while I am there..............would love to have them.
I also am of the Tarlington Bates family. Discovered it when I entered my Grandfather's name in a Google SEARCH box - his name was Tarlington Bates Carpenter. What a wonderful surprise when the other Tarlington's popped up. Have not been in touch with Rae for quite a while - do not know how to contact her. I can add some theories if you want to e-mail me.
Penny LGroup2220@aol.com

Hi Bill,

I have looked at her, she is the only Huldah Willoughby I can find that would be the right age b.in Conn. I am a bit concerned over the marriage to Melzar Howe but it seems to be recorded, big age difference. There is a researcher doing the Howe family, (I have another one in my tree) and I have sent him a note on Melzar, maybe he will have some information. There is a large Griswold family in that area of Goshen, but census reports put Samuel Griswolds birth in NY (you never know, that could be wrong). Anyway I seem to want to lean thier direction but would like to have something more concrete, I've been looking for over 10 yrs so not sure I'll find out for sure. Thanks so much for the reply, if you trip over something concerning Huldah keep me in mind.

Thanks again!
Denise Griswold-Hill

Hi Sue. I am looking to extend the Willoughby tree back, and any info on Joseph's in-laws the Grove family. I know Joseph was one of 8 children (the latter two were possibly half siblings). I know that his father was a William Willoughby b.1801c poss born in Oxfordshire, and his mother was called Elizabeth born around the same time.
Joseph Willoughby and Emma Grove are my GGGG-Grandparents. Their daughter Mary Ann married into the Sargeant family etc. Any info that you have that maybe linked would be very helpful. Thanks Selina.

I note it's quite a few years since you posted your message but felt I should reply as I'm sure we are related. I was a Willoughby before marrying and I know of several members of the family who went to Michigan - Joe Green (father also Joe Green), Minnie, Walter and George. The cottage where they used to live has now been demolished but was white with a thatched roof. Some of the family, I believe, also went to Australia. I do not have alot of information but my father knows more. If you receive this message please confirm receipt and maybe we can exchange information.

When you wrote your query you were on the willoughby board. I have a Hugh Willoughby, born in England, who was to have settled in Norfolk area around 1710 and from there to Albemarle Co., Va around 1750-60. He had a son Alexander, born 1760 in Va. and then to KY around 1782. Have not had any luck finding this particular family in VA. There was a Capt. Tomas Willoughby who was well known in Norfolk, and another Willoughby whose house is open to the public in Norfolk, called the Willoughby/ Baylor House. There is another large Willoughby family in the Nelson Co., Va area (Walker S. Willoughby). This is apparently not my family. If you know anything about Alexander Willoughby I would be eternally grateful. He married Elizabeth Welch Rice and was a Rev. veteran and pensioner. He's buried in Nicholasville, KY

Thanks for your reply, Sherry. I have all that info, and much more. The problem seems to be that Hugh H.Willoughby and Agnes Suthard/Sutherland, etc. are assumed to be the ancestors of the Willoughby's living in Nelson Co., VA and they don't know of any Alexander!!! One of us is obviously wrong, but don't know who. Katherine (Willoughby) Shely was my great, great grandmother and I'm sure of the connections back to Alexander, but cannot find any real proof that Hugh H was his father except from a letter written by my Grandmother. She gave Hugh's spouse as Agnes or Jane Southerland. I've tried all variations of the name and come up with nothing positive. Molly

Molly,

I did a search at ancestry and, according to quite a few trees, Alexander's parents were: Hugh H. Willoughby & Agnes Suddarth. There are several variations for his mother's surname: Suddarth,Southerd,Southerland

One tree lists:
-Hugh H.: b.? England, d. 1768 Amherst Co., VA
-Agnes Suddarth: b. abt 1739 Stafford, VA, d.1825
-Alexander: b.1757 Virginia, d.1842 Jessamine Co.,KY
-Elizabeth: b.1768 Charlotte,VA, d.16 Dec 1844 Jessamine Co., KY
-Their Daughter, Katherine Hughes Willoughby: b. 14 Oct 1808 KY, d. 26 Nov 1895 KY; She married Washington F. Shely (1802-1841)

There is only one record listed for Alexander:
Kentucky Census, 1810-90

I have come across his name quite frequently in my Willoughby searches. He is mentioned in a book about Jessamine County, the title of which I don't recall. I do believe that "Jessamine County" is in the title, though.

Hope this helps! If you don't have an Ancestry subscription, I highly reccommend it as it is an invaluable site. My research moved along exponentially after signing up!
HAPPY HUNTING!!! ~Sherry
