Susan Harris - Randolph and Terrell Counties Georgia

Hi..can anyone tell me why in
1840 Randolph County Susan Harris shows living next to Joseph Wills but with the name Susan Harris

In 1850, she is still in Randolph County (941st)showing with whom I'm assuming are her children:
Joseph, Louisiana, Martha, Mary, and Nancy.....the children are all listed as Harris

In 1860 in Terrell County she is still listed as SUSAN HARRIS, but the children are all now listed as Wills, and by this time Wm H Harris had been born.

Why the change in names for them? Were they Wills or were they Harris'? Were those her children or maybe step-children?

In 1870 it shows SUSAN HARRIS living next to Martha Wills, but with Susan now it lists William as a Mulatto? What happened? Were they all mulattos listed as White?
Help!

Thanks,
Yolanda
On her death certificate it list Elizabeth Wills as her mother and Richard Thomas has her father which is wrong that was her husband. We believe that her father was possible J. P. Wills.
William, Joseph, Hiram Wills family

I am looking for information revolving around Joseph Wills family, He lived a somewhat sordid life and is somehow connected to my G grandfather Howard M Wills. Howard is listed as his grandson and living with him in 1900 & 1910 but I can't find the connection anywhere. Our family always said Howard was born out of wedlock, but took the Wills name. Joseph had 2 illegitimate children of his own but I don't believe he was Howards father because of the age diff. Howard was born Oct 1889 KY and Joseph b 1824. Since Howard was born in KY I believe his mother must have gone there to give birth, Hiram and Jabez both lived in KY for a time and could have let her stay with them.
ANY help please?!
Tammy
Fred Wills Family - photo 1896

I posted a message a year or so ago for this family under the name of Fred Will. I have two very nice photos. On the back on one is written "Mr. and Mrs. Fred Will family 7 children" .The second picture is of the two youngest children. They appear to be about 2 and 4 give or take a year, curly hair. On the back of the picture is only a date July 26, 1896. In the photo album my grandfather wrote "The Wills Sisters". The handwriting on the back of the family picture is not my grandfather's writing. Now I am wondering if their name was WIlls and not Will. There are parents, three boys and four girls in the picture. It appears as though the eldest child is a boy, the next, a girl, it is a toss up on the next two on who is older - girl and boy, the 5th child is a boy and the youngest are girls. The mother has a very prominent face and the eldest son looks like her. If someone knows this family I think they would be able to identify by looking at the mother. The pictures were taken by J. W. Lake, Traveling Photographer. I would love to share the pictures with family members. Can anyone help me identify these people? They may have lived in Illinois as the photo album was found in my grandparents' home in Fairbury, IL and my grandfather seemed to know these people enough to identify the little girls. Thanks.

HAMMAN/HAMMOND(S) FAMILY REUNION

HAMMAN/HAMMOND(S) FAMILY REUNION
JULY 25-27, 2008, LEXINGTON, KY

The Phillip Hamman Family Association made up of descendants of Revolutionary War hero, Phillip Hamman, and his wife, Christina Cook, residents of Kentucky for over 40 years beginning in 1782, will be having its Bi-Annual Family Reunion in Lexington, Kentucky July 25-27, 2008.

Hamman/Hammond(s) cousins will be descending upon Lexington from Alabama, Arizona, California, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and, hopefully, many from all parts of Kentucky, as well as some new cousins from other states.

Headquarters for the reunion will be the Four Points Hotel by Sheraton, 1938 Stanton Way, Lexington, KY. Reservations must be made by June 30, 2008 to get the special Phillip Hamman Group Rate. Visitors may check in as early as July 23 and get the same special room rate. When you call for reservations be sure to tell them that you are part of the Hamman Reunion group and want the special group rate.

Brian Ann Wells Arnett of Versailles, KY is coordinating the reunion and could use some help from any of the Hamman cousins in the Lexington, KY area. For more information, contact Doris Brown Rose, President of the Association, by Email: rose0303@att.net

You don’t have to be registered at the hotel to participate in the reunion events, but reservations for the Saturday night banquet should be made by those not staying at the hotel. You can contact Doris Brown Rose at the above email address to make those banquet reservations.

Friday, July 25, a group trip is planned to Mt. Sterling, then to Slate Creek near Jeffersonville, Montgomery County, to visit the site where Phillip Hamman and Christina Cook lived for almost 40 years, followed by a group meeting at 7:00p.m. Friday night for the sharing of newly revised family group sheets for each of Phillip and Christina’s children. Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. will be the business meeting for the election of new officers, followed by the sharing of new family history discoveries from members and guests. A highlight of the reunion is always the banquet on Saturday night. The special guest speaker at the Saturday night banquet will be Charles E. Darnell, descendant of Henry Cook, brother of Christina Cook Hamman.

The reunion is also open to all Hamman, Hammond(s), or any other variation of the spelling of that surname, even if you are not a descendant of Phillip and Christina.

Anyone who is a descendant of Phillip Hamman who is interested in becoming a member of DAR or SAR might especially want to attend this reunion. One member of the Association, Beverly Jay Martin, is a DAR Genealogy Consultant, has generously offered to help anyone who needs help with the application process. The service for Phillip Hamman has already been proven, as have the lines of each of his children, so it is a minor thing to get the papers in order for applying for membership in either organization. At the present time there are 88 descendants of Phillip Hamman in the DAR Descendants Database. Also, children from birth to age 21 can become members of CAR, Children of the American Revolution. The Phillip Hamman Chapter of CAR, located in Jackson, Breathitt County, KY, was named for our ancestor. James Bach Strohmeier, a former president of the Phillip Hamman Family Association, is now serving as its Senior Advisor/Sponsor. He would love to have some additions to his chapter.

This is only the fourth time in the 37 year history of the Phillip Hamman Family Association that the reunion has been held in Kentucky. The previous Kentucky based reunions were in Louisville in 1974, and in Lexington in 1982 and 1994. So, all of you Kentucky Hamman/Hammond(s) cousins might want to mark this date on your calendar and plan to attend this year’s reunion as it will probably be at least ten years before the next one will be back in Kentucky. Other reunions have been held in Chattanooga, TN; Little Rock, AR; Salt Lake City, UT; Seattle, Washington; Corinth, MS; two meetings in Oklahoma City, OK; two in Dallas, TX; two in San Francisco, CA; and four meetings in Alabama in the towns of Fort Payne, Guntersville, and twice in Huntsville.

The Phillip Hamman Family Association was formed in 1971 with the dedicated purpose of (1) gathering data about the family of Phillip and Christina Hamman and their descendants, (2) creating a giant database of information on the family to be shared by all, (3) locating the graves of all of the children of Phillip and Christina and placing markers on those that were unmarked or “poorly marked”, (4) to hold a reunion every two years, and (5) to publish a semi-annual newsletter as a means of keeping in touch with members on a regular basis. Because of the dedicated work of many Hamman cousins, all the purposes of the Association have been met, especially in the area of locating the descendants of Phillip and Christina. At the present time there are over 17,000 proven descendants who have been identified.

In recent years, the family researchers have also greatly increased their efforts to obtain information on the descendants of Valentine Cook and Anna “Susannah” Baughman, parents of Christina Cook, and the associations’s database on this family has been growing also.

CHILDREN OF PHILLIP HAMMAN & CHRISTINA COOK:
1. John Hammond, born August 19, 1781, Cook’s Fort, Greenbrier Co. VA; died December 1, 1854, Bloomington, Morgan Co. KY (now Magoffin Co. KY); married Margaret “Peggy” Evans.
The Trials of Captain Thomas Wells, of Nottoway Co., Virginia

http://www.thegillons.net/gen/CTW/

Marvel W. Dunnavant published this 1816 report on the trials of Captain Thomas Wells of Nottoway Co., Virginia. Wells was charged with attempted murder in the shooting of Colonel William C. Greenhill and Judge Peter Randolph. The two were wounded on May 29, 1816, by Captain Thomas Wells as they were entering the tavern yard at Nottoway Court House. Both recovered. Wells was tried for shooting with intent to kill, but was acquitted.

Wells and his friend, Peter Perry, soon migrated to Salem, Clarke Co., Georgia. In 1820, Perry was found in his garden, dead of a gunshot wound. The murder was a mystery until Perry's will was opened. In it, Perry revealed that Wells suspected and had accused him of having an affair with Wells' beautiful wife, and that he expected Wells to "assassinate" him. Perry's will denied the affair and implicated Wells in the murder. Wells was later hanged, but Perry's will asked that his execution be delayed long enough for Wells to fully comprehend what he had done.

Interestingly, in the 1810 Nottoway census, Peter Perry resides next to Edmund and William Wills (no known relation to Capt. Thomas Wells, but maybe...), and one Col. Wills actually presided over Capt. Wells' trial.

Also of interest is that Peter Bland represented the Commonwealth and his brother, Edward Bland, represented the defendant.

A fascinating tale.
Hello all

My grandad was John Henry Wills born 28 Sep 1907. He was illegitimate and all I have is his mother was Gertrude Wills. I was always led to believe he was a Barnardo's boy but having paid for a search and reached a dead end, this appears to not be true. There is also a story he was brought up by his aunt Gertrude but his birth certificate states he was born

1 Northumberland Street, St Marylebone, London
MOTHER Gertrude Wills, Cook (domestic) of 45 Foley Street, St Marylebone.

I have no family to ask and am ever hopeful of finding a fellow Wills who can shed some light

Elaine

David Wills' Pa, only one page left of this bible

I am in no way related to this gentleman or family. My uncle took me to a barn which has a lot of books from different places. These books are about to be placed into a hole and burned. I tried to save as much genealogy information as I could. All that is left of this bible is one page with the following deaths.

I am a lover of genealogy and know how hard it is to find information.

David Wills (with death date )
Georgeanna Wills (with death date)
David Wills with death date (it says Thier(sic) Father) after his name
Isabella Wills Handiwerk (sick) their mother with death date and her age after that.

If you are a descendant of this family please contact me at
jmsagross@hotmail.com

Jackie

I am hoping to reunite this genealogy information with its family.
