There are too many to count and not all of them are related to each other so the best I could recommend is to go to ancestry.com and search their public records. All you need to get started are your parents and grand parents names and sooner or later you will discover someone who is researching your family line. Good luck, Michael.

I have some information on S B that I could send you but most of what I have is for the Alexander side of his family.

Michael

Thanks...the 11429 is my husband's family plot and Harriett is his g-g-grandmother. I stumbled onto Green-Wood by accident and found the family. John Wilmot is buried somewhere in New Jersey (probably close to Jersey City according to the death listing) but I'm looking for something that says Harriett and Emeline are his daughters or Gertrude their sister. Some of Gertrude's children's graves are nearby in Green-Wood...those I did literally stumble over : ) Emeline's death certificate says she was married but I'm assuming that's in error. (She did die in NYC at Harriett's house.) I don't believe the other Wilmot's are related. I appreciate your letting me know if you did find anything in your archives. Good luck in your search!

I don't think my NY Wilmots are related to yours. Are you familiar with the Green Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn? There are the following Wilmot's there in the same lot/section:

WILMOT	HARRIET	1878-10-04	9540	109
WILMOT	JOHN	1899-05-19	9540	109
WILMOT	JOHN H.	1855-11-16	9540	109
WILMOT	MAUD A.	1903-01-19	9540	109

Emaline is buried in a different lot/section:

WILMOT	EMELINE	1869-10-17	11429	74

which is the same section as Harriet (Wilmot) Moore:

MOORE	HARRIETT	1886-03-12	11429	74

If you have not already, you may want to check at the cemetery office for further info on people buried in this plot; place of death may lead you to her death notice in the local paper which might mention family. I might also have taken notes on Emaline's death certificate if it was in NYC. If you haven't seen it, I will check to see if I have any further info on her.

The John Wilmot listed here (b NY 1779-1861) was the father of Gertrude Ann Wilmot who married Harmon Lefferts of Long Island, NY. I am trying to confirm that John is also the father of Emeline Wilmot (1815-1869) and Harriett Wilmot (1818-1886). Harriett married Henry Moore abt 1842.

All,

Wanted to let you know that while nosing around the Fort Worth Ridgmar Half Price Books bookstore, I ran across the book titled, "Lord Rochester's Monkey - being the life of John Wilmot, Second Earl of Rochester", by Graham Green published in 1974 by The Viking Press." Since the book was only a $1.00, I went ahead a purchased it. As it turns out I am only distantly related to John Wilmot (something like 9th cousin, 10 times removed)

Jim Houston
Fort Worth, Texas

Was going through a site with MI's yesterday at www.kentarchaeology.org.uk and there are some references to Elizabeth Wilmot(t) there e.g. one read "George Witherden 1758. His wife Elizabeth (Wilmott) and daughter Anne who married Thomas Jackson of Camberwell 1812" (in Bethersden list). There was another Elizabeth whose married name was Wilmot and whose husband was George Wilmot (in Ightham list) - quite a long inscription. Another married name Wilmot - husband William and daughter Harriot (d 1781) (in Shoreham list). I think I found all the Wilmot(t)'s so hope this is of some help.

I am hoping someone has information on the Wilmot / Wilmoths of Nova Scotia.

My great grandfather was William Wilmot b. abt. 1851 md. 29 Apr. 1870, Isabelle/Isabella Hyndman dau. of Daniel 7 Margaret (Nelson) Hyndman. At the time of their wedding an H was added to Wilmot to become Wilmoth.

My grandfather Nelson Bernard Wilmoth, was born in Stellarton 5 Nov 1888. His mother died when he was young, probably between the ages of 3-5, and his oldest sister Margaret, brought him to Boston to live. My grandfather grew up believing that his father was also dead, but we now know, that wasn't the case.

My grandfather had 6 siblings, and never met any of them except for one. I would like to try and find out more information on his family. I have been researching this family for over 20 years and it has been a struggle.

William and Isabelle had the following children:

1. Margaret Wilmoth b, 9 Apr. 1871 md. Cleveland Eldridge and resided on Cape Cod/
2. Jennie/Jeanette Wilmoth b. 1874 Stellarton NS md. 21 Aug 1895 Stellarton, NS George Tye s. of William Barbara Tye. They had three children and still resided in Stellarton during the 1930's
3.Daniel Wilmoth /Willmott b. 1879 Lunenburg, md. 3 Apr. 1916 Stellarton Cassie Bigney
4. John Wilmoth b. 1878 lived in Holbrook Ma. and had a daughter Clarice b. Jul 1899 and d. Sept. 1972. She md. Byron Faxon.
5. Charlotte Wilmoth went by Lottie
6. William Wilmoth,
7. Nelson Bernard Wilmoth b, 5 Nov. 1888 Stellarton md. 29 Dec. 1907 Gloucester, MA, Mabel Eliza Daggett dau. of Charles Jennie Rebecca (Lowell) Daggett.

If anyone has any information regarding any Wilmot /Wilmoth line in Nova Scotia and Massachusetts, I would love to hear from You.

Jill Palmer
RPalmer835@comcast.net

Re: Eli T Wilmot, 1801-1876, NY>GA

I am a descendant of the son that Eli and his first wife Jane legally adopted. (It appears that she could not have children, since Eli went on to father your husband's ancestor at an advanced age with his very young second wife.)

Eli's descent from the earliest known Wilmot is as follows:

Benjamin Wilmot + Ann Ladd (New Haven, CT)
William Wilmot + Sarah Thomas
John Wilmot + Sarah Clark
John Wilmot + Dennis Sperry
John Wilmot + Rebecca Johnson
John Wilmot + Sarah Taylor
John Wilmot + Caroline Johnson
Eli Taylor Wilmot

According to his tombstone, which was moved from the family burial ground in 1999 to Nail's Creek Baptist Church in Banks County, GA, Eli was born 26 Sep 1800 and died 28 May of 1876. He married Jane Wiley on 02 Nov 1829. They remained childless and in 1838 legally adopted a boy named John Parton, whom they had raised since birth, changing his name to John Wilmot. He was their only child.

John (Parton) Wilmot, who was conscripted into the Confederate army in 1862, was wounded during his first battle and subsequently contracted measles, which eventually led to his death at approximately age 27. He had one daughter and his wife was pregnant with his son, my ancestor.

Jane Wiley died less that six months later on 10 February 1863. (Her grave was also moved in 1999.)

Less than a year later, on 03 Jan 1864, Eli married Harriet Brawner, the neice of his late wife Jane. (Harriet was the daughter of Jefferson H Brawner & Arminda Wiley, who was Jane's sister.) At the time, he was 63 and she was just 16 years old. (Since Eli was a wealthy man and had no biological children of his own, there is speculation that he may have wanted to produce an heir and that the Wiley/Brawner family pushed a young daughter to marry him with the hope of a quick inheritance and so as to keep the money in the family. Again, however, that is mere speculation.)

Eli and Harriet had three children: Sarilla J (b. 17 Jan 1864), Eli J (b.c. 1867), and Harriet A. (b 1870). The youngest, Harriett, died as a child before 1874. The son Eli died at the age of 22 on 22 May 1889. It is believed by some members of the family that he committed suicide by taking an overdose of laudanum, possibly after a romantic dispute with a woman. Only the daughter Sarilla went on to marry and have children.

Eli (the father) died in 1876, leaving his estate to his wife and two young children, with just a few dollars going to his non-biological grandchildren, the two children of John (Parton) Wilmot.

Harriet remained a widow for 14 years and remarried at age 43 to James T Tate, reportedly a wealthy man whose family was invovled in the stone quarrying industry. However, she died just nine years late at age 52 on 7 May 1899.

Sarilla married J. M. Hutchins on 25 Nov 1890, the same day that her mother also remarried, in Gainesville, Hall County, GA. I myself have no further information about her descendants.

As an interesting side note, in the 1860 slave census, Eli is the owner of 19 slaves, at least six of whom were described as "mulatto" and appear to be the children of one slave woman. There is some speculation that Eli may have fathered those children, especially since there were not always other adult white men in the home for the twelve years over which the births took place. Again, though, this is speculation, but it might explain why Eli believed he could produce an heir.

(Also in 1910, a man named Jef or Jefferson Wilmot, who was sometimes described as mulatto, was living as a boarder with one Green Crawford in Banks County, GA. Jef/Jefferson's occupation was described as "private income" or words to that effect, which seems unusual for a former slave, but not so much so for the son of a wealthy white man. But again, it's all just speculation.)

This should all fill in a few blanks for you. Eli's ancestors were well documented in the early 20th century in a book about the New Haven, Conn. Wilmot family and should be easy to research online. Since I am not biologically descended from the family, I have not gone to the trouble of completely researching them.

William Wilmot md Janet Kyle - dau Elisabeth b Scotland md Henry Garland of Essex

Can't help you with your Elizabeth but was wondering if in your searches you have come across any of my "wandering" Wilmot's. Have only gotten back as far as a William Wilmot (b. bef 1795 where??) who married a Janet Kyle, probably in Scotland, and had an Elisabeth Wilmot b. 1812 in Kelso, Roxburgh, Scotland. Elisabeth married a Henry Garland b. abt 1800 in Colchester, Essex and their first child, another Henry Garland, was born in Hadlow, Kent in abt.1835 which is why there just MAY be a connection with Kent. As you can see I'm getting desperate to try to find out where this Wilmot line originally came from. Any connections you can see??

There is a family tree on rootsweb.com including a John G. Wilmot and Phoebe J. Sammis; they had a child in New York City in 1888. Maybe this is your John & Phoebe.
