You may wish to consult the NY Gen Biographical Record (1975), which gives a professional genealogist's treatment of the early Wiltse genealogy. The "myth" of Philippe Maton Wiltse still finds its way into both print and internet postings from time to time: the first actual Wiltse was Hendrick, son of Marten, who appears in Ft. Wiltwyck (Kingston, NY) in the late 1650s. The author of the 1908 history (which has been uncritically reproduced in countless "Wiltse" genealogies), Jerome Wiltse, was in my direct line of descent. Jerome chose to write a history based upon "retrospective visions," i.e. fiction, and published his work without solid evidences. I will be happy to give citations, and discuss critical evidences that effectively negate the claims of an actual "Philippe Maton" as the founding Wiltse ancestor.
