David "Pop" Winans Sr.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - David "Pop" Winans Sr., the Grammy-nominated patriarch of the award-winning gospel music family, died Wednesday. He was 76.

A statement from a Los Angeles public relations company representing the family said he died at a Nashville hospice, where he had been since January after suffering a heart attack and stroke last October.

In 1999, Winans was nominated for a Grammy for his solo CD "Uncensored." He and his wife Delores, known as Mom Winans, were nominated for their CD "Mom & Pop Winans" in 1989. She was at his bedside when he died, the statement said.

He was the father of BeBe and CeCe Winans, known for their hits "Addictive Love" and "I'll Take You There." Four other children - Michael, Marvin, Carvin and Ronald - performed as The Winans, recording such songs as "Ain't No Need to Worry" featuring Anita Baker.

In recent years, Mom and Pop Winans appeared regularly at Benny Hinn crusades and on The Trinity Broadcasting Network's "Praise the Lord" program.

David Winans, a native of Detroit, began singing with a gospel quartet at age 18.

He later worked as a car salesman, taxi driver, custodian, barber and also was a preacher. After four of his children signed a recording contract, he was their manager for a while.

David Winans also helped start youth groups in Detroit. The Winans had 10 children. Son Ronald died in 2005.

"The Winans family wishes to thank everyone for their prayers and continued support, but would appreciate privacy at this time," the statement said.

Memorial services are planned for next Tuesday and Wednesday at Perfecting Church in Detroit where Marvin is the senior pastor.

A very nice and informative job. I am so pleased to have it and will hope to hear about the up date. My Grandfather was Charles W. Davis- Mary Virginia's older brother. Their father, George Grove Davis kept a diary of the crossing. I have developed a "Compendium" of the Diary. I believe the original was in the hands of Norm Clippenger -but was unable to confirm it. In any case, the diary notes that Mary Virginia was bit by one of the horses on May 31st between Chimney Rock and Scotts Bluff. It was a "cold and windy day". Contact me directly at r.roycarm@verizon.net and I'll tell you about a bad day on the 28th of May. On August 19th -the last day of the trip- the Diary notes,"...who should come up first to greet us but our old friend and townsman, Stephen Winans". I also have the Colts Revolver carried by George Grove Davis on the trip. Roy 3600

Roy3600, that's an interesting bit of history about Mary Virginia and her family coming to CA via covered wagon. I would like to add that info to a page I've put together for some of these Winans pioneers. It's at:

http://cwcfamily.org/winanss2.htm

I'll be working on it over this weekend. Please take a look when you have a chance and let me know what you think.

James Edwin Winans would appear to be the son of Stephen Winans and Eliza Johnston. They are mentioned in page 41 of Alice Winans Egy Wooley's book "Winans Family Genealogy". I've transcribed and uploaded portions of that book. You can see page 41 at http://cwcfamily.org/egyc1.htm#pg41, then trace backwards from there to the original immigrant, John Winans, who came from the Netherlands. I have no information on James himself or his descendants, but I notice that his parents and siblings seem to have migrated from Ohio to Sweetland, California, so I guess this is the right guy. If you have any further questions, please send me e-mail at "cwcfamily@roadrunner.com".

In the 1860 census she's listed with the initials E. E. V. and in 1870 she's listed as Eliza E. Winans. Alice Wooley has her listed as "Francis" E. on page 105 and stated she married a Walter S. Wallace. She died before 1904. The Histor of Beaver County was published in that year and the bio on her father Dr. John Winans did not mention her as one of his surviving daughters.
Re: Frazier Winans, b. 1828, d. Elkhart, IN, any photos?

[let's see if the "message board" will let me post this reply]

Dear Winans listers,

I am replying to the cousin who posted this message on the message board, as well as to the Winans list. I've had nothing but difficulty trying to reply to the boards, although I see I managed to post a reply to one of your messages back in 2001. I'm glad you included your personal e-mail address so that I could be sure of your receiving my reply.

I don't really know any more about Frazier Winans than what I see in Alice's book. I'm the one who has been uploading miscellaneous pages from that "monumental tome" to my web site at:

http://cwcfamily.org/egy.htm

The source of all the information on FW and his siblings seems to be a Mrs. Barbara Zelko of San Juan Capistrano, CA. I was going to suggest trying to contact her family, but I see at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CAORANGE/2002-09/103305... that you've already done just that. I turned up several Zelkos in California by using the "people search" at http://www.whitepages.com/, but you've probably done something similar.

My only other suggestion would be to try looking for information in Elkhart, IN. I saw your post-it at http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=winans&..., so I guess you've been doing some research there. Could his obituary give any clues? If he was active in GAR or Masons or IOOF or whatever, maybe there's an old photo somewhere in some archives. Maybe the church he belonged to, if it still exists, has some photos from its early days.

I looked up FW in O C Winans' book, but he's not mentioned and there's very little info on his parents or grandparents.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. Perhaps there's another cousin who will see these posts and come through with the photo or some more clues. Good luck!

cousin Chuck Carey
Anaheim, CA
mailto:cwcfamily@roadrunner.com

[Retrying this post; let's see if it goes thru this time. It looks like rootsweb doesn't permit html tabs. Oh well.]

You seem to have a pretty good handle on several generations of Winans. I checked my copy of Alice Winans Egy Woolley's book, Winans Family Genealogy, and found the following info on these Winans wives:

* Robert Clyde Winans' wife Adora Clark - no info on parents
* Sylvester Clyde Winans' wife Bessie Bell Dillison - her parents were Charles H. Dillison and Clara Bell Merell
* Nathaniel Harrison Winans' wife Caroline Elizabeth Daniel - her parents were Robert Bashan Daniel and Francis Forster
* Theron S. Winans' wife Deidama Banks - her parents were Nathaniel Banks and Mary Woodman

The source of some of this information is given as Robert's brother Riley Eugene Winans, b 1911 in Lansing, MI. Riley had two children, Carolyn Jane Winans b 1943 who married William Christian Jr in Bradenton, FL, and Riley Eugene Winans II b 1945.

I would be glad to scan and e-mail you any portions of this book which might be of interest.

Chuck Carey
http://cwcfamily.org/
Thank you! Chuck ! Robert Winans was my grandfather, I knew he had a brother Riley, I never met him. I was told he never got married. Do you know who his wife was? I Need more info on the parents you have listed, Do you know when and where they were born? I know that Robert Bashan Daniel and Francis Forster came from England, I found them on a ships list(cant find my notes right now)arriving in New York Sept of 1836. Francis was listed as Francis Daniels wife of Robert. If I remember there was no Forster lsted on the ship, but there was a William Foster, I assumed to be Francis brother. Adora Clark was the only child of Orville Clark and Isobel Ide. I got 10 generations of Winans, starting with my mother and going back to John(Jan)Winans and Susannah Melyn.(Donna, Robert, Slyvestor, Nathaniel, Theron, John, John, William, Conrad, Jan) I have a John Wynants 1615 Amsterdam and Lutgen Van Den Ende from Gogh,Neverlands as the parents of Jan winans 1640-1694. I'm not sure how factual that is. Any information from Theron Winans to present would be great.
Hi, cousin-in-law . All I know is that they were married in Illinois and left with Stephen F. Austin to settle on Grant land in Bastrop County, Texas. The Winans were the first to go to Texas in the 1830's. Captain Blair, Davy Crockett, Caroline, her Thaxton husband and Eliza and her Brantly husband. All the women were daughters of Robert Franklin Whiteaker I.R. F. Whiteaker I was married to Anne Weir. Later R. F. Whiteaker I and his company were prevented from going on by a flood on the river in Arkansas. They stayed and put in a crop and travelled to Texas following the harvest. The made it to Texas to join the rest of the family in 1835.

The Whiteakers have a family tree at: http://members.tripod.com/daaley/whiteaker.html.

Maybe, if you're still following the trail, you'll have better luck at finding out what happened to them. Then you can let me know. If I find out anything more from the queries I've put out, I'll let you know.
Cathy Martin

Sarah Maria Winans from New Jersey

Wondering if anyone has any info on the above. According to the Pollard family Bible, a Sarah Maria Winans, b. abt. 1750 from Troy, New Jersey married John Pollard, b. abt 1750 in Piscataway, New Jersey, moved to Parsippany abt. 1775. She is thought to be the daughter of William Winans, from Troy. She was also possibly the widow of man named Jeffries as in the Bible, the first entry of John and Maria's children is listed as Phebe Jeffries, b. Sept. 13, 1772.

Re: Isaac Winans, Sarah Webster

Elmer Ross Winans is my great grandfather. He and Ida Stewart had two children: Ross Winans and Patience Winans, born in Walla Walla Washington. Patience is my grandmother. Ross was in his 40's when he was drafted into the US Army, he served in the signal corp, and was at the Battle of the Bulge.
Please write back to me - I haven't been able to find anyone else who's descended from this branch of the Winans family.
PS: My dad inherited a Winans family photo album with lots of pictures in it, and we're not sure who any of them are. He also got an enormous family bible from 1850 with family history written in.
Thanks!!
Nancy Williams,
knoxvillenancy@yahoo.com
