Looking through the census it would appear that Benjamin Davis married a second time and that Julia (her son married a Warby) was his second wife's child and probably not nee Davis but nee Williams. It appears Joseph Windmill married Julia Ann Williams in 1878.

Regards Joanne Warby

Looking for family of George Thomas Windmill b. abt 1886 in Brierley Hill - Staffordshire to parents Joseph & Julia nee Davis (daughter of Benjamin & Hannah Davis). George married Beatrice Donna Eliza Warby in 1909. It is not known if they had any children and am desperatley seeking to find out.

I will be in the Midlands (my husbands Warby family is from Gornal)and have arranged or family of 3 of the five Warby children born to Arthur Robert Warby & Maria Warby to meet at the Crooked House. The family that Beatrice Warby's sister Glady Warby married into (Woodcocks) the family that actually ran the Crooked House back in 1851-1871 era so thought this would be a great place to meet.

George Thomas had siblings:
Annie Elizabeth Windmill b. 1880 Brierley Hill
Joseph William b. 1882 Brierley Hill
Maud Beatrice b. 1884 Brierley Hill
Elsie France b. 1889 Brierley Hill
Walter J b. 1895 Brierley Hill

Really hoping to find children for George & Beatrice Windmill - or even a family representative for this casual light hearted meeting.

Regards Joanne Warby

Windmills in Wales?

Hello,
This is probably a long shot but has anyone found any of their Windmills in Glamorgan Wales?
I am researching for a friend, her mother was Daisy Lavaine Williams (b.22/02/1932 Pontypridd), Daisy's mother was Kathy Windmill, I do not know the fathers name. Kathy Windmill left her children with her parents in Caerphilly Glamorgan where they were brought up.
This is all the information I have on the family, no other names or dates! As Kathy was estranged from the family my friends mother never spoke of her.
I wonder if anyone can help me with this one as I haven't got a clue where to even start!
Help?
Dawn.

Dear Marion,
At last I've got my Windmills sorted!. Hannah Martha WINMILL is great-grandmother (m. Frederick Wolfreys c1883, Fulham). She is the daur. of George WINDMILL of Potsgrove and Sarah SPENCER of Dorset. George(b. 1834)is the son of James Wright WINMILL (b. 1804, Potsgrove)and Hannah PITKIN. Then, of course, there's Thomas and then John WINDMILL.

I say at last, because, Hannah Martha gave the name Annie Olive on the birth certificates of her children, all 11 of them. Her death certificate does, however, indicate she is Hannah Martha (names of her two grandmothers). If you'd like to share information, I can be reached at xtinaw@btinternet.com

My Grandmother's maiden name was also Windmill. Her father was Arthur Albert Windmill and he was born about 1874 in Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. His father was Richard Alfred Windmill and his mother's maiden name was 'Kate' Faith Catharine Hawkins. Richard's parents were Edward Windmill and I believe Lydia Wood. Are your Windmill's from the Brierley Hill/Kingswinford area of Staffordshire?
Kevin

HI,
Im researching my husband's family, he has a Windmill line (his grandmother's maiden name) back to 1801 (so far). They are all based around staffordshire/worcestershire- the regions changed a few times. Let me know if you think there might be a connection.
Regards,
Megan

Hi,
I thought that maybe I should post my line as there just may be a link somewhere back in time.

The earliest I have in my tree is
John Windmill (b c1748 in Ivinghoe) married Ann
- thanks to a lookup done for me on rootschat there is a possible marriage of John Windmill to Ann Baker in 1766 in Ivinghoe Aston - this could be them

Their known children (through IGI) are
Mary Windmill (b1773 Ivinghoe)
Thomas Windmll (b1780 Ivinghoe)

Thomas moved to Potsgrove, Bedfordshire where he married Elizabeth Wright Thame on 12 May 1802

Their children all born in Potsgrove are
Joseph b1802 married Leah (unknown)
James Wright b1804 married Hannah Pitkin
Rachel Thame b1807
Robert b1809 married Eliza Wilson
George b1811 married Mary (unknown)
John b1813 married Ann Newbury
William b1816 married Eliza Parker
Ann b1818
Mary b1820 married James Handscomb
Maria b1822
Elizabeth b1824
Ann b1827

If anyone has any links to these families I would be glad to hear from you :-)

Cheers
Marion

Re: Tilting at Windmills

I have recently discovered this line - I am interested in the surname because one of my ancestors is a Windmill and I have noticed a couple marrying into the family I am researching (and living as neighbours in many a census!).

I have your Caroline Susan and her siblings and can now add her mother's maiden name and a few dates, along with siblings for David - many thanks!

David's mother, Mary, I have a birthdate for her as 1777 rather than 1877 - I will double check my sources. I can't go back any further than them either I'm afraid.

I don't have either a Ruth Horn or an Amos Windmill.

I do, however, have Henry Windmill and Mary Ann Pollard. His father was also Henry, and Mary's father was John. This is complicated now as this is where our 'stories' differ.

Their daughter Susanna (b. 1840) married Moses Herbert (b. 1836). They in turn had a son called Arthur Herbert (b. 1864) who married Annie Horn (b. Oct 1862) on 23 Dec 1882 in Ivinghoe.

Annie Horn is the daughter of Caleb Horn and Mary Weedon.
Caleb is the son of Edward Horn and Elizabeth (also nee Horn - his second wife).
Edward is the son of Francis Horn and Elizabeth Room (from whom I am descended).
Elizabeth is the daughter of William Horn and Deborah Tilcock (or Tilcox) - I have a huge list of their descendants as well as my own 'side' and the two have intermarried several times.

Francis Horn and Elizabeth Room's son Thomas Horn (b. abt 1789) married Elizabeth Windmill (b. 17 Oct 1792, d 1840) on 9 Dec 1815. Thomas and Elizabeth are my great great great great grandparents. Unfortunately I cannot connect my Elizabeth with the other Windmills who have married into my family.

If you click on my name and go to my public profile then click on 'contact me' I'll get an email and can reply and let you have my real email address (rather than post it on here) - perhaps we can unravel this together!

Paula

Re: Tilting at Windmills

I am researching the Windmill's primarily in Buckinghamshire as my wives ancesters came from Ivinghoe/Ivinghoe Aston. I have taken over some research undertaken by another relative done prior to Internet Census records. I started from the Census and have a extremely good fit. Now on to a number of items raised in this strand.

1) Caroline Susan Windmill (b1861) in my tree has a eight brothers and sisters born between 1850 and 1879, with Caroline being 7th out of 9. Her mother and father are David Windmill (b 1831) and Alice Halsey (b 1832), who married 8th Dec 1849 and both died betn 1891 & 1901 census.

David has five other siblings I have discovered so far

a)Benjamin Windmill (b 1825) who married Ann ?? (b 1829, d 1856). Benjamim remarried a Mary A Ridgeway in 1857 and had a son George F Windmill (b 1859 and died in infancy).

b) James (b 1809, d 1852) married Sophia Sear (b 1806, d 1852) in 1834/5.

c) Thomas (b 1812, d 1854) married Mary Janes (b 1812, d 1875) in 1832.

d) Nonny ? (b 1815)

e) John (b 28-Feb-1820, d 21-May-1891) married Rizpah Kimble (b 1825 - Hogstone/Hoggeston, d 1906) on 5-Sep-1849. This is where my wives family can be traced back to. Rizpah Kimble's parents were Aaron Kimble & Hannah Claridge.

f) David Windmill's parents were James Windmill (b 1781) and Mary Ann Taylor (b 1787, Northall). They were married 22-Nov-1806 at Eaton Bray, Bedfordshire. So far I am stumped as to who James Father was or whether James had any brothers or sisters.

2) I have a Ruth Horn (b 1861) who married Amos Windmill (b 10-Aug-1862) on 29-Oct-1891. Amos was a son of John Windmill & Rizpah Kimble (any connection?)

3) Where do Mary Ann & Henry Pollard fit in? Horn or Windmill side?

4) Henry Windmill lived in Ivinhoe/ Ivinghoe Aston (b 1815 Eddlesborough - Northall,Bucks)Ivinghoe Aston) married Maria (Mena) ??? (b 1820) who had a daughter Susannah (b 1841) who married Moses Herbert (b 1839). I do know that Ruth Windmill (sister to Susannah) were living at the same address in the 1871 census.

So far I have not been able to connect the two trees but living so close there must be a link - have you got any information to assist?

That's a pity. I found quite a lot more the other evening, one branch of which moved to Yorkshire. However, I suspect it is one of those surnames that will have cropped up in many parts of the country (even though there don't seem to be that many of them left!) with families who worked on or near a windmill. Miller seems to have been more successful as a surname.

I know that there is a Windmill in Pitstone, near Ivinghoe where my ancestors lived so I assume that is the source of the name in that area.

I've found some more Windmills since I posted!

Henry Windmill (d. 1838) had a son, also Henry Windmill (b. 1816) who married Mary Ann Pollard (b. 1820). They had a daughter, Susanna Windmill (b. 1840) and she married Moses Herbert. Their son Arthur married one of my Horn family which is how I found them. They are from the Buckinghamshire area and Henry & Mary Ann Pollard were born in Ivinghoe Aston, Bucks, as was their daughter Susanna.

I have an Elizabeth Windmill born 17 October 1792 in Ivinghoe, Bucks. She died about 1840. I have her parents as Matthew Windmill and Ann - but no dates I'm afraid.

She married Thomas Horn (b. abt 1789 Ivinghoe) on 9 December 1815. They had four children that I know of: William (b. abt 1816); Mahala (b.10 May 1823); Thomas (b. 19 May 1827); and Elizabeth (b. 11 Sept 1831) - all in Ivinghoe Aston.

I also have a Caroline Susan Windmill (b. abt 1869, Ivinghoe Aston) - she married Edward Horn (b. 21 Aug 1865 Ivinghoe Aston) from my Horn family (his grandfather Edward was brother to the aforementioned Thomas who married Elizabeth Windmill).

We may be able to find some connections Marion!
