I believe James' parents were William Willis Wines and Caroline Fletcher. Please let me know if these names are in your line. I would be really interested in what you might have to share.
obit for Elizabeth Wines Semans, born 1849 Montreal, Canada; died 1936 Kansas

Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, Jan. 2, 1936, page 8:
ELIZABETH A. SEMANS
Elizabeth Ann Wines was born near Montreal, Canada, on April 26, 1849. During her girlhood the family moved to Wisconsin and later to Minnesota, where she grew to womanhood. There she received her secondary education in an academy. For that day her education was very complete and thorough and Christian. Her training and her sane philosophy of life formed the basis of her beautiful character.
In Minnesota she taught several terms of school and there also she met and married Solomon Luther Semans. She and her sister, Charlotte, who is now Mrs. Charlotte Austin of Salina, had a double wedding.
After making their home in Minnesota for several years, Mr. and Mrs. Semans, with their two young children, moved to Kansas, where Mrs. Semans' parents had already located.
At Coursen's Grove, near Simpson, they took a homestead, and Mr. Semans, along with his farming, followed the blacksmith's trade. While there he took up the work of the Christian ministry and their itinerancy began. In a fine and faithful service Mrs. Semans with her family occupied numerous parsonage homes among which were those of Simpson and Glasco, Miltonvale, Culver, Brookville, Marquette, Lebanon, Norton, Delphos, Scandia, Claflin and Jamestown.
After her husband's death in 1911, Mrs. Semans lived in her own home in Salina until a few years ago when she came to Minneapolis, to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. A.R. Miller.
Her seven children are all living: Dr. A. L. Semans of Spencer, Iowa; Mrs. W.A. Lesley of Hiwasse, Arkansas; Mrs. L.R. Fansler of Independence, Kansas; Mrs. A.R. Miller of Minneapolis, Kansas; Marion Ray Semans of Jamestown, Kansas; Dr. C.J. Semans of Mitchell, South Dakota; and Mrs. Roy C. Wines of Los Angeles, California. Mrs. Semans is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Charlotte Austin of Salina, Kansas; and Mrs. George Snapp of Barnard, Kansas, and by two brothers, Fred Wines of Topeka, Kansas; and Henry Wines of Barnard, Kansas. She leaves twenty-one grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Among those from out of town in attendance last Sunday afternoon at the funeral services of Mrs. Semans at the M.E. church in Minneapolis were: Mrs. Charlotte Austin, Miss Irma Austin, Mr. Leon Austin, and Mr. and Mrs. Lesley Austin from Salina, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Snapp and Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Snapp Jr., of Barnard, Mrs. L.R. Fansler of Independence, K

Hello, Its been so long since I posted here I'd completely forgotten about it! Do you have an email address I could contact you through? As Im sure you've read, David Wine's daughter, Rebecca Jane Wine, is my great great grandmother.
I had the last name spelled incorrectly, the way some family had pronounced it to me when I was originally researching this line, was "Wines". I think it just came out of the way they spoke it and over time family that didnt know any better thought it was Wines instead of Wine.

Thank you for your reply about the Wine family. I have quite a bit of decendants from the Culpeper area since I go back to the germanna germans. I know that the Wines name is german but I think they came to the Culpeper area later than mine. I was surprized to find a connection to the Culpeper/Fauquire Wines & my husbands Essex Taylors. What I am seeking is the parents & siblings of James E. Wines b abt 1850 in Fauquier Co. I'm sure all the Wines are connected but James is as far as I have back. Any info appreciated.
Ollie

Benjamin was born in 1813, David Smyth Wine was born in 1829. I have a lot of information on these families.
I also have an uncle, who is having one of the mtDNA tests done to try to connect us to other Virgnia Wine families.
If there are any male Wine family members In Va. who are willing to do this also, we sure would appreciate knowing our relatives and making connections.
thank you

Not sure if your Schoolcraft family and mine connect but sure would like to find out. I'm sure they moved northward out of West Virginia but do not know where because the 1940 census information is not available.
My Schoolcraft line was in the Braxton/Lewis County area of West Virginia and Rebecca Schoolcraft, a daughter of Aaron and Sarah Stallman Schoolcraft, married my greatgreat grandfather, James William Radcliff. This particualar Schoolcraft line is one that was known for relatives being slaughtered by the Indians and one of the sons, Leonard, actually stayed with the Indians and led raids on whites.

I am looking for the owner of a "Gilligan type" Navy hat that I now have in my possession. I had always been told the hat was my grandfather Paul Price's when I was a little girl. However, my father died last year and I found it in some old clothes. I began to really look at it. Inside is stamped, H E WINES. Under that, to the best of my reading it are the numbers 440 89 34. It is quite faded. I am guessing this might have been the hat of a friend of my grandfathers. My grandfather was from Wheeling, WV but by 1954-55 he had lived in about 30 states. I know this because by age 17 my own father had lived in as many states. If anyone might know the family of this H E WINES please let me know. I want to return this hat to the family.
Thanks.
Leigh Gatewood

Your long ago inquiry (23 June 2000, which I pasted below) could have be penned by me this very morning! To refresh your memory, here is your inquiry posted almost eight years ago:

Looking for Connection to a William Wines who married a Nellie Balwin and Leonard wines who married Rhoda Baldwin. Both were in Hanover, New Jersey in 1806. They are later found in Southold, New York. Probably decendents of Barnabas Wines of Hanover, New Jersey and later Southold, New York. Does anyone know the names of Barnabas Wines' children? There is a Barnabas Junior also. Believe Barnabas Wines also related to Osborn family.

Did you make the connection? If so, would you be willing to share the information. My gr-gr-gr grandfather is the William who married Nellie Baldwin, and I am looking for sources to back up the information I have gathered tentatively from hither and thither.

Thanking you in advance for any help you may be able to give,

Kay Frazer
Re: Surname Wines-Rain(e)

I believe I have the information you are looking for. My great grandfather married Carrie Rain, who was the daughter of Jacob Rain by his first wife. Evidently, Jacob moved to Florida in the late 1800s after he had remarried and had two children by his second wife, Abner and Ellen. I have been trying to figure out all the connections and in doing so might have an answer to your search. Evidently, my grandmother was very fond of "Aunt Ellen," who was my great grandmother's half sister. Aunt Ellen used to come visit my grandmother regularly.

Digging back through family photos and letters, I was able to find a couple of pictures of Ellen and a picture of Jacob, his wife (who I guess is Amy J. Wines), and his two children, Abner and Ellen. I have scanned the photos if this would help you to identify Amy and then, of course, Ellen. Let me know and I can email those to you if you would like.

My mother, who remembers Aunt Ellen thinks that she married a man with the last name Sheffield. Once she told me that, I was able to search Ancestry and found that a Mary Ellen Rain Sheffield, who was a resident of Duval County, died in 1960. I have to think that this is the very same Ellen Rain who you and I both have been trying to identify.

Anyway, I hope this information is useful to you. Do let me know if you would like for me to email you the pictures. You might have other pictures of Amy that you could compare and verify.

Thanks.

Jim

Wine of Fauquier, Va. and Hagerstown, Md.

I have been trying for some time to find any information on my Wine family prior to a birth certificate for James William Wine b 1923 in Hagerstown, Md. His parents are listed as James Luther Wine b Fauquier, Va. and Annie Goshenour b Limeton, Va.

I found a WWI draft registration record for James Luther Wine which listed his widowed mother, Anna Sealock, as his next of kin and living at the same address in Hagerstown, Md.

The federal census of 1930 for Hagerstown, Md. lists James Luther Wine, age 50, as head of household. Living with him were his daughter Pollyanna, age 9, his son James William, age 7, his daughter Lelia Caroline, age 5, and his widowed mother Anna Selock, age 77.

James Luther's wife Annie died sometime between 1925 and 1930, possibly from TB, but I don't know when. I also don't have any idea when James Luther or his mother Anna Selock died but do know that the children were put into an orphanage for some time. According to James William, Pollyanna got out when she was 18, came back for Lelia but left James there. He then ran away. In 1939, at the age of 16, he lied about his age and joined the army.

According to James William, his father had a brother named John Wine who also lived in Hagerstown. He was said to have had 11 children. Of these 11, one girl was named Jesse and one boy had the nick-name of Scotty.

I have searched for James Luther Wine, Annie Goshenour, and Anna Selock in census records prior to 1930 but have found nothing. I have found no records pertaining to any of their births, deaths, or marriages.

Does anyone have any information which might fill in the missing pieces to this puzzle? Help!

Melvin married Emily (not sure of her maiden name) and they had 2 children - Melvin and David.
My father, Robert married Diane Bailey and they had 2 children also - my older brother Robert and me Keith.
I just want to make sure you are also a Wines since your reply used the surname 'Wine'.
I will use your direct email next time, it is late here in CO and our pillows are callings.
Keith
