Alford Joseph Winford, born abt 1840, lived St. Francis Co., MO, wife was Cora

I have an original carte de visite photograph of “A. J. Winford – Forrest City, Ark.”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Forrest City is in St. Francis Co. In the photo he looks to be about 30 years old.

I found him in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 censuses for St. Francis Co. In 1870, he was age 28 born TN, living on a farm next to A. C. Winford, age 60, born TN. In 1880, he was Joe Winford, age 41, with wife Cora and 3 children and his mother Sarah Winford, in Madison, MO. In 1900, he was Alford J., born Jul 1839, with wife Cora.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Alford Joseph Winford.

The quarter blood Cherokee Joseph Elliott granted the reservation in AL may be the connection I am looking for. My ancestor (below) could be an older son and not listed in the 1854 Act of Congress since he was killed in 1846.

I am seeking info on a John (Jack) Elliott b. ~1800 md. ~1820 Elizabeth Foreman d. 1846 Indian Territory. This John (Jack) Elliott was associated with the Cherokees by virtue of his marriage to Elizabeth Foreman. I have some suspicions he may have origins in NE, AL. (Maybe GA or TN) He was killed by assasins loyal to the John Ross faction of the Cherokees who were vying for power and control with the Old Settlers faction in Indian Territoy. Stand Watie, later to become a Confederate General, was part of this latter group.

I hope someone may be able to provide some additional info.

Thank You.

Garry Remington
I don't really know. I have A George Winford son of Timothy Winford and Nancy Galloway.

Both George and Nancy died in 1863 leaving 3 children; Marinda Jane Winford b. 1856, Josephine Winford b. 1856-1861, and George Winford b. 1862. They were adopted out. George couldn't have been more than a year old. I don't know who they were adopted out to.

In 1860 they were in Piggett Co., AR. on the census.
I hope this at least helps some but if you need more just let me know.

Sharon

Sharon,
Thanks for your reply. I would like to know more about the first Martha Winford that you listed (father: John Taylor Winford, mother Jane Taylor). I know there is a John Winford in the general area early enough to be her father, as I have guessed she was born 1780 to 1790.
I know very little, still, about Martha Winford, who married Joseph Elliott. Some of her children were born in Kentucky, some in Tennessee. I suspect Franklin County, Tn. or Bedford County, Tn. because of family history in these two counties.
Thanks, Betty
Looking for info on J. M. Winford who is listed in 1850 Dyer Co., TN census then in 1860 Haywood Co., TN census. Believe his second wife, Rebecca, was born in Alabama and perhaps this Winford family came from Franklin County, TN which borders Alabama. John and Joseph Winford came early to Franklin County probably from Rowan County, N.C. so think perhaps J. M. might be one of their sons.

WINFORD FAMILY

Searching for family of Alex Winford. He married Rebecca Young (don't know maiden name). She had several children from a previous marriage. Alex and Rebecca had 2 children...Fallie and Charlie. I believe Alex was born in Virginia. Fallie was born in Davie County. That's all I know of the Winford portion.

Fallie married Lafayette Foster and they had 3 daughters Helen, Edna, and Annie all of NC and deceased. Their children still live in Winston-Salem and surrounding areas of NC...with the exception of Helen's son who lives in Akron, Ohio.

Any help with these family is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pam

Mr. Winford married Miss Wise, daughter Mary Jewell Winford

HHHHEEELLLLPPP!!!! I am missing names for one of our generations and it's making me crazy... perhaps somebody can help:

Mary Jewell Winford (b. 1905) married Talmadge Pinkney Cordell in Oklahoma sometime in the 1920s. I am looking for her parents and siblings.

Mary Jewell was the granddaughter of John Elliott Wise (b. abt 1842 in Illinois) and Lucinda Jane Underwood (b. 1845 in Illinois). John's given name may actually have been Johnson. I only have the names of SOME of the Wise/Underwood children, and I'm fairly certain I'm missing the name of the daughter who married Mr. Winford, whose name I also do not have. In fact, I know nothing whatsoever about the Winford family...

The Wise and Underwood families moved to Texas sometime in the 1860s. They were in Fannin County, TX for the 1870 census and in Gainesville, Cooke County, TX for the 1880 and 1900 censuses.

Unfortunately, what little data I have come from a 40-year-old letter written by one family member to another, both of whom already knew the missing facts. The writer and recipient are both long gone. We would be EXTREMELY grateful for any information or insight! Thanks!

Mr. Winford married Miss Wise, daughter Mary Jewell Winford

My Winford notes has Mary Jewell Winford as daughter of Ausby W. Winford & Epsie Campbell Wise & granddaughter of Johnson Elliott Wise & Lucinda Jane Underwood. Mary Jewell's siblings were Noah Wilson, Roy Alvin, Ira Bennie, Jessie Marvin, Ausby Pete, Helen Lorene & another unnamed son. Ausby W. Winford was son of Marvel Madrid Winford and grandson of James Smith Winford & S. Amanda Wyatt. James Smith Winford was born in 1815 in North Carolina. His father is perhaps Alexander Winford who was in 1820 census for Rowan County, N.C. Alexander's other brothers moved to Tennessee before 1810.

My Winford notes say that Timothy Winford died in the Civil War. His children, Marinda Jane, Josephine and George, were orphans so assuming the mother must be deceased too. Marinda married Pascal G. Tucker and lived in Weakley County, TN. Josephine was living in Green County, AR in 1870 in the household of Joseph & Martha EWIN. George was an orphan in the 1870 census & living with a cousin, William T. WINFORD, in Green County, AR. William T.
