Hill Winfrey

I am looking for information concerning the death of Hill Winfrey (ca 1770-1814). He resided in Buckingham County, Va but served in the militia during the War of 1812. I have found one reference to his death being at Fort Norfolk, Va in July of 1814. That reference was on Ancestry.com and I have not been able to find an actual record or cause of death. Any help would be appreciated.

LOOKING FOR MORE INFORMATION AND A POSSIBLE 'CONNECT' TO A LIVING DESCENDANT OF THIS FAMILY GROUP:

Rosa May Hedges b.ca. 1892 MO m. 29 Sept 1908 in Savanna, Andrew Co. MO Frank Israel Winfrey b. 20 Apr 1879 Wathena, KS d. 27 Nov 1949 St. Joseph, Buchanan Co. MO. Rosa May Hedges was the daughter of Emily V. Their first 3 children were born in OK. They returned to Missouri for good by 1917 and remained the rest of their lives in St. Joseph, Buchanan Co. MO where Frank I.
Winfrey History

I am very interested in locating some Winfrey history. My great grandfather was Hal Glaspy Winfrey, Sr. born 1/13/1863, married to Nannie Moore Fawbush Winfrey, 11/17/1864. Hal Glaspy Winfrey was born and raised in Rogersville, TN. He and his wife, Nannie Moore Fawbush Winfrey had 8 or 9 boys and 3 girls and adopted some other children. The Winfrey family was in the stone mason business.

I can be reached at j_larabee@charter.net

Jody L.
I finally tracked Lem down! His parents were Henry & Clara Winfrey. If I didn't mention this before, Lem (1889) was killed by a lighting strike that broke every bone in his body. He was known to always wear riding boots. (see pic attached)
I also have found that some family members lived in Ruleville and Sunflower counties. Within the next 2 weekends, I am going to see if I can find out Lem's wife's name and if she was a Townsend. Our families could be connected!

Katefield,
Thank you so much for replying with so much information. I have only had brief incounters with a couple of relatives and I have not been recieved well due to the circumstances of my arrival into this world. I am so pleased and awed by the information. I have nothing of my father's background, I never met him and the people I contacted refused to share any pictures or real information. One woman, supposedly Dennis's greatniece, even confessed to me that she posted false information online to confuse people.

So hear is a little about me...
My name at birth was Jo Anna Irene Nokleby(my mother's second husband's last name). I changed my name legally in 2004. I was born 11-13-1975 in Tacoma, WA, on Dennis's 65th birthday. My mother is Bernice Stauffer,at the time of their relationship she and my 5 older siblings lived in Port Orchard, WA.

We moved to Texas in 1980 and on returning to WA in 1985 we drove through MO. My mom wanted me to meet Dennis. He was not at home so we found Fred at a nursing home...I remember it was July 4th because all the residence were outside watching fireworks in the parkinglot. My mom tried to explain who we were and she asked if he remembered. His relpy was, "It's your story, you tell it." He seemed to have a good since of humor. Being only nine years old, I don't remember what he looked like, just that he had long fingers and liver spots.
After arriving back in WA my mom tried to contact Dennis by mail and all the letters were returned unopened. Then in about 1986 she took legal action and blood work was court ordered and he was declaired my biological father. I assume that this is probably where the alienation towards me comes from. He then died in 1987 before I could ever meet him.
Skipping ahead a bunch here, I now live in Chelan WA. I am in my last quarter at Central Washington University and will be recieving my Bachelors in Visual Art Education in December after I finish student teaching. I have a 15yr old daughter named Kaytie Mae. She is amazing! I was fortunate to have been able to homeschool her for awile and when she started public school she was moved up one grade. Now she is a junior at Chelan High School and this weekend we will be touring colleges in Oregon for her. She wants to either major in music education or english education with a minor in signlanguage. She is accomplished in both piano and saxaphone and this year she won 1st runner-up in the Miss Lake Chelan pagent providing her with a scholarship for college.
I am actually supposed to be packing right now but hearing from you is so amazing that I just needed to reply. I would love to know more about you and your family. I don't want to be too pushy, but if you have any photos of Dennis or even you and your family, or maybe you could pass my info along to someone that might posses any photos I would be so greatful. Kaytie and I both are anxious to see a picture of my father and her grandfather.

If you prefer, you are welcome to contact me by email: jwinter75@gmail.com

If you choose to respond to my email please include your phone number and I could call you.

Thank you again for responding and I look forward to continuing our conversation.
JoAnna

Fred was my great uncle/second cousin (does that confuse you????) Actually, it's simple, Fred was my grandmother, Mary Catharine (Kate) Anderson Schofield and Fred mother was her sister. Aunt Lena, Fred's wife, was my Grandfather Daniel Henry Schofield's sister.
I think that I saw Uncle Fred some time around 1974 or 75 when he had gone with his daughter, Eileen and her husband, Orval Adams to visit my parents.
I met Dennis at least once while I was living in Kansas City and took my now sister-in-law and one of my sister's former sister-in-laws out to see Uncle Fred's collection.
Where do you live? And do you know your cousins, Venita Baxter --- her father was your Uncle Clinton and her brother Jim lives at "the old homeplace" (i.e., Clinton and Ruby's farm in Bostworth, MO.) Venita and her husband, Gary Baxter live in Norburne, MO on a very large farm. You have another cousin Fern (don't remember her last name) but she she was raised by Fred and Lena after her father, Bailey died in a gun accident. Fern lives in Brookfield, MO and I have met her on one ocassion and that was back in the 60's as I was waiting to catch a bus -- my Uncle John Schofield, took me in to introduce us.
If I were not having a problem of needing to get to the bathroom to night, I would send you more information.
You may be able to find more info that I have entered here as I have posted more information and I know several other people have also posted.
If you know where Uncle Fred, Aunt Lena, and so many others in the family are buried in Evergreen Cemetery (think Dennis is there also?). Anyway, our great, great grandfather, John Darrah's grave stone has vanished and one of our 5th cousins who lives in Denver, visited the cemetery the first weekend in April and has made arangments to have the stone replaced. He had been determined to have it done last year in time to have it in place on the 100th anniversary of John's death. We do have a very large family.
I am not certain where your great grandmother Winfrey and my Grandmother Schofield were born, but the family legend is that their Grandmother (?) Taylor lived in Chandlerville, Illinois and the family legend is that when Abraham Lincoln was riding the circuit west of Springfield, IL, he may have stayed with her on at least one time if not more.
thank you for the reply. im curious as to your mother's parents. i descend from george hill's son harvey. george is my great great grandfather. i have been to sharon church and the farm several times in the past few years to take pictures. i know that george is not buried at the church, or if he is, his marker is no longer there. the farm adjacent to the church is where harvey winfrey and annie tapscott made there home until the 1950s. my father and i are not sure who lived on the property prior them, or if it was winfrey land from earlier generations. if so, it could be possible he was buried there, but i have seen no trace while visiting. harvey and annie are buried at the church, the only winfrey's i found there. in fact, i have had trouble finding any other winfrey's in buckingham. again, i appreciate your interest.

Appears in the "Wills Point Chronicle: March 13, 1905, Wills Point, Van Zandt County, Texas

HOUSE STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

The residence of G. H. Winfrey in this city was struck by lightning Monday night during the thunder storm and about $75 damage done to the building according to Mr. Winfrey's estimate. Though the entire family were badly stunned, fortunately none of them were badly hurt. The bolt of electricity seemed to strike the house in three places and finally struck the cistern, completely demolishing the top and doing possible damage to the walls. It was fortunate the damage was no worse.

I have no proof of the things I tell you about my mothers family. This is just part of my family oral history and is tainted by the fact that I did not know my grandparents and only remember stories from my childhood as well as I am not sure how accurate my memory of events is, that being said here goes. My mother was Agnes and she had three sisters and a brother. The brother (Luther) and two sister were older (Catherine and Louise) as well as a younger sister (Ruth). I think Harvey was one of my mothers uncles as well as Dr. Winfrey of Henrico Co.,Va.(Winfrey Rd. off of Greenwood Rd. in Glen Allen, Va. is named in honor of Dr. Winfrey and I believe that the house that was his home and office is still on Winfrey Rd.) My mother was born 05/01/21. Her mother was Mary Williams Winfrey and she was from Henrico and died when my mother was about 12 years of age. I believe my grandfather's name was also Luther A. Winfrey (he may have been sextant of Sharon Baptist Church in the 20's/30's) and I am almost sure that he is buried on the farm in Buckingham and that my grandmother was buried in a private cemetary in Glen Allen that was destroyed when I295 was built around Richmond. I do not think the farm I am refering to was at the church. I believe that at one time that the Winfreys owned a lot of land/farms in Buckingham. I cannot recall Dr. Winfrey's first name at this time although I sure that I did know it. My uncle Luther died at an institution in Lynchburg sometime in the 1950's.(again this is a childhood memory). It seems to me that in today's medical world that he would have been considered as Autistic. There was once a gentleman (David Winfrey) that I think lived in Maryland that I met at the afore mentioned church homecoming that had compiled and shared with my mother a history of the Winfreys that we are speaking of that with some gaps that he was trying to fill in all the way back to a George Winfrey that was supposely a soldier/adventurer that came through Jamestown, Va. in 1609 (?) Rev. John C. Penny (would be in his 80's now if living)(he had two sons) of Richmond Co.,Va.(only son of Catherine Winfrey Penny, my aunt) may also have some good info. There I just gave you a bucket of oysters, maybe when you shuck them you will find some pearls....

My mother's maiden name was "Agnes Hill Winfrey", she lived for a short time on the family farm in Buckingham as a young girl. George Hill Winfrey was my Great Grandfather from my mother's family. The Winfrey family helped establish Sharron Baptist Church in Buckingham in 1835, George Hill may be buried there. There is also an old cemetary on or near the old Winfrey farm and he could be there. I am 58 years old and have only been to the church and farm once when I accompanied my mother to Sharron Baptist for a homecoming. This would have been 20-25 years ago, so it is not a real sharp memory. I hope this is some help to you...
