I believe it is a variant spelling of the name "Wingate" that can also be spelt "Wingett" or "Whinyates" or "Wyniatt" etc. The further back you go, the more variation there is in spelling.

My Winget ancestor spelled it "Wingeat" when he applied for a government pension in the 1880s, although it was spelled "Winget" on his enlistment in the army in the Civil War. I am not sure how literate he was; the army enlistment was signed with an "X" although later it looks like he signed the pension papers. Maybe he was dyslexic; "Wingeat" could be a confusion of "Wingate" and the original spelling of "Winget" on his enlistment could have just reflected the way he pronounced it, especially if someone else was writing it down for him.

According to "The Oxford Dictionary of Surnames," it originated in a place-name (there are several places called Wingate and Wingates in England), from the Old English for "Wind-Gate" meaning "Dweller in a windy pass".

There is a photo of Zenos Winget's cemetery marker that someone took. Was that you?

And I just looked at the tree and it seems I've accidentally replaced just a while ago the two Zenos' on the tree. I'm going to have to correct this. Check back another time if this isn't fixed when you look. Today's a busy day.

My great grandmother Bessie was Zenos' daughter, born in 1875 and died in 1913 when my grandmother was two. My Bessie may have been an aunt to your Bessie? There is also Caleb and Daniel in my tree. However, I must admit that I've not thoroughly checked this side of my grandmother's ancestors and there may well be mistakes.

My great grandmother is Bessie Winget. Her father, if I've researched correctly, is Zenos Winget. I believe they're from Burton Township a few miles outside of Quincy. Zenos may have been a brother to your Winget descendant. There is a large portrait photo of Bessie that is now in the possession of an aunt. There may be other photos of Wingets and Oitkers (whose family Bessie married in to) but they would be with an elderly cousin of my mother.

Help with early 1800s Winget in PA or MD

I've just discovered an ancestor whose maiden name was Winget and would like to learn more -- particularly, who her parents might have been. She was called Mary Elizabeth, born in 1818, probably in Maryland but possibly Pennsylvania. She married William Ash about 1840, they lived in Baltimore, but after his death (about 1859) moved to Washington, D.C. with her children. Her eldest son, Charles Joshua Ash (born in Pennsylvania in 1840) later used the name of Winget or Wingeat; my last "sighting" of him is in San Francisco in 1897. Among her other children were a son, William Ash, who died in D.C. and a daughter Emma, whose married name was Hulse and who had one daughter, Florence.

Does this ring any bells with anyone else's research?

The Winget book has an entry for Oscar Winget, 9/27/1893, mar Caynell Clark, Hartford, Ind. 3 children. Oscar is the son of Eugene Winget and Mary Smith.

No, that line is not in the Winget book. The author looked for everyone she could find with Winget, Wingett, and Wingate names from 1930 to the early '60s.

Oh my, I am so thrilled to meet someone searching this line. James and Sophia's son Lemuel is a ggg grandfather. I have found their sister Elizabeth only within a few days and found their brother John and am corresponding with one of his family members but have never been able to prove or link James to Joel and Mary Wallace Hull. Oh I am so excited. I would greatly appreciate anything you can give me. I do have pictures of Lemuel and many on down his line. Would love to share all or any info with you. My computer go hit by lighting but am using my daughters so will not be a problem. I think I have hard copied most stuff I have. I live in Indiana, where do you live. I had seen Henry on census but never been able to track him. I do know that Rachel is buried in Olive Hill, KY with James and Sophia. You can email me directly as well. There is a Hull/Dickison reunion in July here in our town and we try to share at that time as well. I believe Johns grandson will be there. We finally made contact with him this month when my father in law went to West Virginia recently. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Karen, as I posted to the mailing list, what information I have comes from the Ancestral File ( http://www.familysearch.org ). I merely added Sophia and James to my database in order to entice you to join my site. The dates and spellings I used come from the Ancestral File. We are related through Daniel /Winget/ (1763-1846)
and Phoebe /Clutter/ (1768-1846). There is a family history researcher in SLC who specializes in the Winget line, but costs $30 /hour. Once I save up some money, I will commission them for a 10 hour search. There must be some proof, somewhere, of Caleb's parents.

The Ancestral File will list any submitters so you will have a means of contacting them:

Once you register on my site, you will be able to directly edit my GEDCOM. The software I use automatically hides information on people it considers "living" (eg people whose birthdate is within 120 years). I believe this Ziba /Winget/ to be the same as

Searching for a Sophia Winget b-7-5-1824 in Morris twp. Green County, PA d- 6-19-1902 and buried in Olive Hill, KY She was married to a James Hull b 10-18-1820 d-11-30-1879 and buried at Olive Hill Kentucky. I know they lived in Meigs County Ohio for some time. I know they had a child named Lemuel Hull b12-14-1856 and d-12-28-1933 in Clay county Indiana, and a son named John Hull who I believe lived in Peach Creek, WV. Any help would greatly be appreciated. I am researching this family. James Hull is the father to my Henry Hull, born 1845. James and Sophia married after his birth so I am not sure is Sophia is his mother. The parents of James are Joel Hull and Mary Wallace. You might already have this info since your query was posted last year. If not, let me know and I will send you more info.

I am descended from Daniel Winget (abt 1763-1846) and Phoebe Clutter (abt 1768-1846) through their son Willam.

Ziba is also the son of Daniel Winget and Phoebe Clutter. Ziba has an AFN (Ancestral File Number) of S5P1-SL which you can reference on http://www.familysearch.org

In my database, I have the following children for Ziba Winget and Phoebe Day:
Mary (b. abt 1822)
Pheby (b. abt 1843)

Thanks Karla for the information. My grt-grt grandmother, Caroline (Taylor) Nuckols, was born 1850 in Clark County, Ohio and when 3 yrs old moved with family to Jay County, Indiana. I know her father was born in Penn. & her mother in Ohio, but did not have their names. I'm trying to confirm that Richard & Lucretia are the correct family for my line. In written information left by my grandmother, Caroline had at least 3 sisters ... Laura (Taylor) Cloffer, Ann (Taylor) Ridgeway, & Pheba (Taylor) Master. Do you have information that would confirm this? Could Mary's middle name have been Ann? Thanks for your help.

Grizel winget married to John Dunn

I am searching for any information about Grizel Winget who was born abt 1710 in Scotland and was married to John Dunn in Cambuslang, Lanark, Scotland on May 1, 1734. They had a daughter whom they named Grizel Dunn, who married Robert Dinsmuir 18 Dec 1757. I need more information if you have it. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you,

I found Charity and son Levi in the 1870 census for Canton, Buffalo County Wisconsin. Charity was the wife of McCreary Winget. The name is spelled Winchet instead of Winget in this record.
Winchet, Levi age 40, born Ohio farmer
Wincet, Phoebe, age 35 born NY
Winchet, Olive, age 12 born WI
Winchet, Charles, age 10, born WI
Phoebe, age 5, born WI
Andrew, age 1, born WI
Charity, age 68, born VA
Levi and family is also listed in the 1880 census for the same township; although Charity is not listed here. She probably died before the 1880 census was taken.
According to this record it also appears that Levi's wife Phoebe had also passed away before 1880. Another wife is listed by the name of Rebecca, age 49, born in Ohio
A step son is also listed by the name of Charles, last name is not readable. I know Mcreary Winget and wife Charity Livingston were in Clark County Ohio, Mad River Township in the 1860 census. Does anyone know where McCreary died?
It appears that the family moved to Wisconsin about 1865. I am a direct descendant of McCreary Winget. If anyone has any information on him, please contact me.

Winget/McCashen connection

Hi. I am researching my family. I found Sarah E. Mc Cashen, daughter of William McCashen and Elizabeth Winget married Ruel Aldrich in Shelby County Ohio June 16 1853. William was born abt. 1795, probably in Ohio territory; his father was John McCashen. I found a John and James McCashen in the 1790 Federal Census records for Pennsylvania. In the 1820 Federal Census records for Greene County Ohio, Bath Township; there are 2 John McCashen's listed there along with a Ziba and Calib Winget. They were obviously neighbors, as they are listed one right after the other. If anyone has any information on the McCashen line from Pennsylvania to Ohio, please contact me. There are also a couple other McCashen/Winget marriages that I believe are connected to my family. William McCashen and Elizabeth Winget (daughter of Ziba Winget and Jane McCreary) were my 4th gr-grandparents.
