Dona and Malinda,

Good Morning, I see you were also doing research on the Wingfield family tree. I started doing some research a couple months back as well. My Grandmother Louise McNair (daughters Darlene, Joan, Judy, Betty, and son Ronald) is also from Washington Georgia. And her father was a Wingfield. She passed away this past Sunday Night, but the names I remember her saying were Newby, Harriet, Jesse, Creecy, etc. Newby and Creecy was my grandmothers mother and father. Moses, John, Mary A, Mary J, Isaac, and Nelson were cousins..I have a lot of names but no place to put them from when my Aunt Betty went down to Washington Georgia to find family members and do research. Anyway my grandmothers brother passed away as well and his name was Robert Wingfield and he had a lot of Sibling most of which are dead as well(11 total brothers and sisters I believe). We are in The DC area. The last remaining Wingfield is her sister Madeline well at least from their generation. But Roberts son is a Pastor here at Woodstream church and a lot of Wingfields go there as well http://www.woodstreamchurch.org/templates/cuswoodstream/deta... I am trying to get as much info as I can on putting a family tree together..how the Wingfield name originated, etc. All I know is my grandmotheris a Wingfield and from Washington Georgia, I have a page of the census report from 1870 with a lot of Wingfields names on there and I see my great great grandparent names on there. This will also help in other ways as well because according to my grandmother a lot of men in the family were Masons and since I am going in that direction any history would help.

Thank You,

Dorrien Bell

Dorrienbell@gmail.com is the best email to reach me at when not at work.

Hello,my grandfather was Hulin.
Today,I rec'd geneaology info from Hulin's oldest living son.
As I researched today I wondered if RALPH of 1930 Illinois
census were related. Thanks for the confirmation. So, Thomas
and Julia would be my great grandparents.I've been a member
of Ancestry.com since 2002.However,I've devoted much of my
research to my mothers side.As you know this research is quite
exhausting.I rec'd my Wingfield data about 4:00PM Chicago time
it is now 1:21AM.I ran into some stumbling blocks because many
of the census takers were quite illiterate. So, I had to look
up not only WINGFIELD but also WINKFIELD and WIGHFIELD or WIHFIELD.Today was the first time in my research that I decided to look at the posts for family query.I had noticed while browsing the various census how many different Wingfield's were in Georgia and Virginia. This peeped my interest in further researching slaveholders or plantations etc.,and the meaning of the name WINGFIELD.Something directed me to your 2004 post I hope I'm not too late for more collaboration with you, thanks.

Hi,

I hope I was of some help, and will be happy to be of more if I can. If you don't live in Va. and or don't have access to Va. Reg. Hist. I will be glad to get the book for the 42nd Va.

My Wingfields are from Hanover County, Va. The name Thomas Wingfield runs through out this line. My great-grandfather, Peter Chastain Wingfield fought in the Civil War- I can't remember off hand what unit he was in. He was one of a number of children- and if memory serves me he had a brother named Thomas. I've got to go back through the info I have.

Please feel free to contact at my e-mail address: MycatRigsby@verizon.net

All the best.
Sandy

There is a very good series of books entitled the Virginia Regimental Histories. The Va. State Library has copies, as does the Va. Historial Society and some local libraries carry them.

Also Rootsweb has a mailing list for Civil War queries, I've gotten a lot of help from them.

Where abouts in Va. is your Thomas Wingfield from?

Good Luck in you search.

Sandy Wingfield Satterwhite

Trying to connect the dots. Looking for information on one named George Wingfield and Orrie Winkfield. According to the 1900 Census he was born around 1840. He is listed again in the 1920 census as a widow.

I'm assuming George Wingfield is the father of Preston Winkfield. Preston Winkfield was born in Wilkes County and died in Ohio in 1976. Preston's death certificate list father as George Winkfield and mother as Orrie Walton.
I was also looking at the book from the publisher, but there was only a P.O. Box. I got to ask my dad about the 42nd Virginia regiment because I'm still a kid almost a teen. I was also going to ask if you were going to get me the book what would the charge be?

Thanks

Thanks a lot for the help. I actually two ancestors who fought in the 42nd Virginia George W Blake in company I and born in I think Pearisburg, Giles, Virginia but if it's not in Perisburg I know for sure they were close to Bedford County. My other one is Thomas H. Wingfield that you were asking where he was from, I actually don't know where in Virginia he was from. Did any of youre ancestors fight in this regiment because I got some history of the 42nd Virginia. I saw that they fought in Gettysburg in Culp's Hill, Kernstown they fought so well on the battle that it got its praise form Stonewall Jackson, fought also in the seven day campaign, cedar mountain, second Manassas, Sharpsburg lost about 48% of their men, Fredrickdburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Harpers Ferry, Richmond, Petersburg, Five Forks, Appomattox. In the end only TWELVE were OK. Thanks

DReinart1

I have found your George Wingfield who married an "Aury" Walton in Wilkes Co. on 11 FEB 1881 via LDS.com!

That means there is a real Marriage License that you can get the image of LDS or the State Archives OR if you are in Washington-Wilkes, see the original at the courthouse.

Batch No.: M713995
Dates: 1875 - 1882
Source Call No.: 0163536
Type: Film

So follow me here - you have to take the Census age with a grain of salt - at best, the freed slaves could make their best guess at determining age.

This is all WILKES COUNTY CENSUS Data:

* 1920 - George (75 yrs.) is widowed & living with Daughter Lonna [Lorena] age 20

* 1900 - George (60 yrs.), Orrie [Aury] & children are listed & we know from the marriage license they have been married since 1881. Also note, Lorena is listed as 2 yrs.

* 1880 - George (35 yrs.) is living with his "nephew" Harper Benson, his wife EMMA (Wingfield) Benson (they married 26 DEC 1879 - also another available marriage license), George's Mother Judy Wingfield & Brother Anderson Wingfield

*1870 - Mother Judy is living with [Son] Anderson & a 14 yr. old MARY WALTON. A few doors down, a Felix Wingfield (Judy's Son) lives with family & daughter EMMA; a few doors down still - George lives with Wife Susan 20, Son John 3, & daughter Charlotte 0/12

So obviously George, Felix & Anderson were Brothers & their Mother was Judy.

1. Do you think MARY WALTON & AURY [ORRIE] WALTON are the same person?
2. Have you heard any of the other names before?
3. The question remains, what happened to George's Wife Susan & children - IF this is your George?

I hope my logic holds & that this helps! My African-American WINGFIELD website is http://OurGeorgiaRoots.com.

I have posted your Query under "Wilkes Co.
Hi, I have a Betsy Wingfield (GGGrandMa) she was born in 1851 Sheffield, married John North 1879. Her father was William Wingfield he was deceased by then and was described as a Traveller on her marriage certificate. If anyone has any connections to Betsy that woudl be great.

Also stated on the Marriage Cert were the witnesses and they were Isabel and George Wingfield (I assume they are her brother and sister or her brother and his wife).

If you have a connect please contact me.

I am starting behind my Mama's cousin who worked this tree 10 years ago. The family goes back to the year 1091 in England.

I am working my father's line, which is ALSO Wingfield! The intermarriage between the families you find this over and over of course. I am still working on my Daddy's Wingfield line and placing that information on my FTM software but have only fiddled with placing some info on the ancestry.com tree. I am not sure if I am going about this in the right way or not. I am taking one step at a time.

Perhaps we could help each other. I am now attempting to merge my Mama and Daddy's lines. I am still gathering info from Daddy's side. That is where I am.

Is any of this information helpful?

Hi All,

I came across this reference to an Edward Wingfield of Onslow County, North Carolina.

THE COMMONWEALTH OF ONSLOW A History
By JOSEPH PARSONS BROWN
The Owen G. Dunn Company
New Bern, N. C., COPYRIGHT 1960
JOSEPH PARSONS BROWN
JACKSONVILLE, N. C.
SECOND PRINTING 1971
PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

SETTLEMENT AND FORMATION OF THE COUNTY

The Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions
“In Onslow these minutes are complete since 1734.”

“Edward Wingfield marrying the widow of Joseph Mumford required to give bond for protection of property belonging to the children of the said Joseph Mumford”

Does anyone know who this Edward Wingfield married? My interest is in the Mumford/Montfort connection.

Thanks for any assistance.

David
daf1965@gmail.com
