Helena is the first child of theirs listed in the 1910 census. In 1920 she is living with another family as a servant. She was born before May 1901 and Herman and Magdalina weren't married (according to my records) until Sep 1910, so there could be a couple possibilities. . . .
Maybe she was from a previous liaison of one of her parents . . . or
perhaps, as the oldest, she was out of the house at an early age making her own way, and it would have been embarrassing to put down in the Bible a child born before they were married. I don't know.

Helena is news to me, since my grandmother wrote down the family names in her family bible. It is possible, I suppose.

I am Theresa's first granddaughter and first grandchild. For the record, there is no 4th granddaughter by blood. She had no relation genetically to my father. My aunt had two boys, and my uncle had a son and twin daughters.

I also have a first child of Herman & Magdalena - Helena - born around 1901. I got that information from Nancy Geister.

I have 4 granddaughter's of Theresa Frerking. Which of their three was your parent?

I was recently in NY and went to Staten Island where Wilhelmina first came in 1864. I visited the History Museum and then the library, but wasn't able to find any records that helped add any information about the time or the family. I didn't have time to get over to where the genealogical records were.

Terry Olson
Oshiners@me.com

Some of the dates and places coincide (ie, 1840s, Mecklenberg, Germany), but I'm not seeing Wilhelmina's name listed. Most likely a different branch originating in Germany?

Yes, Henry Frederick Frerking married Wilhelmina Frerking and their children were Henry, Frederick, Amanda, Herman (who married Magdalena Hofer), Anna, Louie, Emma, Ernst, Dena, Otto, and Bertha. Herman and Magdalena's children were Otto, Ella, Ramona, Roy, Clara, Theresa, Evelyn, Herman, Martha, and Mae. I am Theresa's granddaughter.

Heinrich Frerking (1833-1889) married Wilhelmina Winkle in Chicago in 1869. Perhaps Friedrika Winkel was her sister and Heinrich was Friedricka's brother-in-law . . . and thus chosen as the God Father for Hienrich Wilhelm Johan Simon (b 24 Aug 1878).

I don't know if you are still looking for information related to this post from 2005, but I'm looking for information on Henry & Minnie Frerking. I would love to find a photo of them. Any infomation you can share would be greatly appreciated and I'd be glad to share any information I have.

Wilhelmina Winkle (b. 22 Jun 1847, d 5 Apr 1930) was my wife's great grandmother. Six years ago you posted a message looking for information. Are you still looking? I would be very interested in the information your grandmother left you and would be glad to send you the information I have.

I would really LOVE to get a photo of Henry & Minnie Winkle. They had 11 children including the one you mentioned, Herman William Frerking, their 4th child. They married 12 Mar 1869 in Chicago.
Winkel from Roggentin, Germany to Wisconsin USA

Hi my name is Daniel Kenneth Winkel

My family came over from Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany Arrival: 02 Dec 1857, New York 8 Custom Germany 8 Departure Hamburg, Germany 8 Occupation: 1860, Laborer His Residence: 1860, Milwaukee Ward 6, Milwaukee Wisconsin

I was able to trace his father back to Roggentin, Germany and is name was Winkel, Johann `Joachim` `Hans`, Jr and his father was Winkel, Johann, Sr born before 1777.

Here is my problem, because I don't speak German and do not have any connections over in Germany I can't read the information listed on some of the web sites that may have the information I need to expand my research.

I know there are two main lines the came from Germany to Wisconsin around the same time.
Re: WINKEL family in Canada & England

--UPDATE--

I've found a little more information. Hopefully this information will help make some links with other family trees...

According to the 1881 British Census, there was a Matilda WINKEL living in West Ham, Essex, England. This is presumably George Frederick WINKEL's mother. There is a daughter listed, an Ellen WINKEL (born c1870 in Stratford, Essex, England). Also in the household was Matilda's daughter-in-law, Lydia WINKEL (assumed to be George's wife, Lydia WITHERS... George himself isn't listed). Children of Lydia on this census were Frederick WINKEL (c1878), William WINKEL (c1879), and Frances WINKEL (c1880).

That first child, Frederick, I also found on the 1891 Vancouver Island Census (Canada) as Frederick S. WINKELL, and he's living with the family listed in my previous post. However, he's not listed in the 1901 census with his family, and I've lost track of him. So it appears that George had at least 9 children with Lydia.

Does anyone know anything about the WINKEL(L) family?

Thanks.

I'm searching for information on the family of George Frederick WINKEL and his wife, Lydia WITHERS.

I believe they had 8 children:

William Charles WINKEL (b. 1879 in England)
Frances Mary WINKEL (b. 1880 in England)
Ethel Lydia WINKEL (b. 1884 in Manitoba, Canada)
Edith Georgia May WINKEL (b. 1886 in Manitoba, Canada)
Victor John WINKEL (b. 1889 in British Columbia, Canada)
Florence Lillie WINKEL (b. 1895 in British Columbia, Canada)
Amy Marguerite WINKEL (b. 1897 in British Columbia, Canada)
Winnifred Sarah WINKEL (b. 1902 in British Columbia, Canada)

I'm not sure Winnifred belongs to this family, but the others all do, according to the 1901 Victoria Census.

I am interested in finding out more about the father, George Frederick WINKEL (b. c1857 in England). Thanks.

The Nick Winkel I am referring to was born November 26, 1845, and married Louisa Zuehlke. They had a son, Nick Jr. who was born Jan. 16, 1890. I am sorry, but I have no idea where Nick Sr. was born, or who his parents were. The family lived in Minnesota and some later in Wisconsin. Jean

Re: Winkel families in the US

I am a Winkel by birth. My Winkel family came from Estonia but I have been able to trace the family back only to 1828 (Mart Winkel who married a woman named Madli). The story that I have been told was that the Winkels got their last name from their occupation, which was carpentry, since "winkel" in German means "angle." My father, Bernt, emigrated to the US in 1952.

Fantastic! I was wondering if you had any information on the Winkel side of the family-- Adrian's parents and grandparents. Would like to know about Adrian's group too, this is the first time I have run into any relatives from my Fehring/Winkel side of the family. Dad did not know many of his Winkel relatives, just his grandmother, Hattie and he had met his uncle Felix once. He knew they lived in Cedar Co., NE and that they were originally from Poland and that there was a Stepchinsky in there somewhere. I have an old photo album that has some Winkel photos in it but none are identified.
