Winterbottom James

Am trying to find anyone with a connection to the family of James Winterbottom 1824-1907. He was for some years the mayor at Nyack, NY, and also had funeral businesses (addresses I have are - Spring St, 6th Avenue, Lexington Ave & E 71st)in NYC and Manhattan. His grandson James E Winterbottom was sometime Coroner for Manhattan. Other connections in NYC with this family were - Reuter, Reuther, Matthews, Gaines, Sessar, Oelzler, Edwards and Bazley.

James came from Saddleworth, Yorks - family connections in that area were at Whitelee, Noonsun, Fernlee and Brunedge.

OLDHAM, Lancs.

Thanks largely to help from Pam I have confirmed my Elijah WINTERBOTTOM, born 1821 in Oldham.

From the IGI Elijah's parents would appear to be James and Betty (but no other information on them - so far).

Also from the IGI I have deduced (wrongly maybe, but you have to start somewhere!) that they had 14 children, all born Oldham, as follows:
1.William Winterbottom b: 25 September 1809
2.Robert Winterbottom b: 26 May 1811
3.Elijah Winterbottom	b: 26 July 1813, d: 29 January 1819
4.Joseph Winterbottom b: 26 February 1815
5.Sarah Ann Winterbottom b: 11 October 1816
6. Melina Winterbottom b: 22 November 1818
7.Elijah Winterbottom	b: 4 February 1821 in Oldham, Lancs. d: Bef. 1881
+Ellen Bamford b: 1821 in Littleborough, Lancs. m: 1848 in Holy Trinity, Littleborough, Lancs.
8. Elizabeth Winterbottom b: 1 February 1823
9.James Winterbottom b: 25 May 1825 in Oldham, Lancs.
10. Asa Winterbottom b: 25 November 1826
11. Maria Winterbottom b: 11 September 1828
12. Betty Winterbottom b: 23 December 1830
13.John Winterbottom b: 27 September 1833
14. Martha Winterbottom b: 17 May 1835

I would be delighted if someone could find a link with my WINTERBOTTOMS or provide (constructive) criticism of my findings.
Also, since all the children were christened in "Greenacres Independant", I would be grateful for any info. on this establishment.
Thanks
Dave

Winterbottom, Archie 1891 Ontario, Canada

Winterbottom, Archie 19 m. Scotland x3 farmer Methodist
Winterbottom, Agginis(Agnes) 18 m. Scotlandx3 Methodist
Winterbottom, Garnet 3 son Ont. Scotlandx2 Methodist
The above information came from the Ontario Genealogical Society page.
I know nothing of this family.

We think Agginis was Agnes Elizabeth Davis, so I am reaching. The family knew she had come from Scotland and married a man named Winterbottom. Agnes and Mr. Winterbottom had four children. That part of the family moved to Washington State, USA. After Archie died(?), Agnes was in Stutsman County, North Dakota married to Rudolph Fritz Renkert, from Germany. She had George; Leroy; Douglass and Ruth Renkert, before she died in April 1910 in Stutsman Co. N.D. The males of the family were adopted to a Schmidt; Schmitt family, they used the Smith name.Ruth was adopted by a Welch family. The family knows very little of Agnes, the children were very young when she died. Leroy had a church baptism record, written in German, the family were German Lutheran.

If you are connected to this family, I would like to hear from you.

I would appreciate any information that anyone has on him or his family as I do not have anything. Thanks in advance!

Amy

George Winterbottom, d. Nov. 6, 1864

I am looking for information on George Wiinterbottom. He worked as a roller coverer and later operated a barber or butcher shop. At the time of his death he was living on Royton Street and his profession was "botanist." He had at least three wives. The second was Ellen Mason (not her maiden name, which may have been Harrison), m. Aug. 18, 1834, Manchester ; his children by her were Joshua and Henry Hunt Winterbottom. The third was Rhoda Cheetham (also not her maiden name, which may have been Collinge), m. Sept. 29, 1850, Prestwich, with whom he had no children. According to the 1841 census, he already had children at the time of his second marriage (James, John, and Jane, though one or more may have been Ellen's by her earlier marriage). I'm trying to identify his first wife/marriage in the hopes that it will lead me to his place and date of birth. My supposition is that she may have been Mary Clough from Shaw. Can anyone help? Does anyone know whether it would have been acceptable in the mid-1800s for a child to take her stepfather's surname?

In 1881 he was a widower living in Oldham, Lancs. with his 7 children (George, Brierly, Henry, Fred, Frank, Wilfred, and Mary Ellen). The following year or thereabouts he moved his family to Canada, probably to Ontario. I believe his wife was Mary Ellen Brierly. Thanks very much.

George Winterbottom

Does anyone have any information on George Winterbottom, who was born about 1800 and died after 1861? George had two wives--Helen and Rhoda (surnames unknown). His children by Helen were James, Ann, John, Jane, Joshua (my great-grandfather), and Henry Hunt Winterbottom. In 1851 George was a cotton twiner; in 1861 he was the proprietor of Thornson's barber (or butcher) shop. During this period the family lived on Royton Street in Oldham, Lancs. Earlier (1841) they had lived on Waterworks Road. I'd very much appreciate any information anyone might have.

I am looking for information on my great grandmother's parents. Her name was Lena Mary Hill, and she was born in Pennsylvania in 1892, and died in California in 1984. According to the California death index, her mother's maiden name was Winterbottom, and according to census information her father was born in Scotland. Does anyone have any information?

Lena married Edward Songer and they had eight children or so. Their son Bernard was my paternal grandfather, but he and my grandmother divorced when my dad was a young kid, so I don't know a whole lot about the Songers, and even less about the Hills and Winterbottoms. Any information would be appreciated.

I'm looking for any information on a Hannah Winterbottom, married to Tom Dawson (b.1854, d.1900 in Huddersfield). The only info I have on her is from FamilySearch, which says she was born in 1816 and died in 1882. Besides making her 38 years older than her husband, it would make her 66 when she gave birth to my great-grandfather John Charles in 1882 in Halifax! Does anyone have more accurate information on her and her family? Thanks!

Jeff (Jeffrey Thomas) Runner
Rochester, NY
