Winthrop Family - Settlement of the Firelands

I have a blog at http://firelands.wordpress.com that tells the history of the founding of the town of Norwalk, Ohio in 1817 during the settlement of the Firelands or “Sufferers’ Land,” a part of the Western Reserve that was given to “Sufferers” burned out of their homes by the British during the Revolution. The story of one of the early settlers of the Firelands, Frederick Wickham, who left a life as a captain of a Lake Erie schooner to settle in Norwalk and become a newspaper editor, is a major part of this history.

Frederick was a descendant of John Winthrop, who settled in America in1630 and was Governor of Massachusetts Colony. On my blog I have posted a genealogy of Frederick Wickham’s Winthrop ancestors that was written by my great-grandmother and grandmother early in the last century.

I post an episode of this history on my blog every Monday and will continue until November 2009. I hope that people interested in the history of the Winthrop family will be entertained and informed by these postings and fill in gaps and correct inaccuracies in my research.

Thank you for your kind attention. I hope you visit my blog and enjoy my story of the Winthrop family and the pioneers of the “Sufferers’ Land.”

Hi Tim,

My name is William Casey. I am a native of Aughadown, Co Cork, Ireland. I am currently doing some research into the links between John Winthrop (1647-1613) of Groton Hall, Suffolk and Aughadown. I was wondering if you know of any Winthrop sources that relate to the John Winthrop I am researching, particularly to his activities in Ireland. I also came across a reference on the web to this John Winthrop will, which claimed this document still survives. However I am unable to find any other reference to it. Do you know if it survives and if so where it is?

regards,
William Casey
email: wmcasey@eircom.net

I have just begun to read Furnas and I am interested in the origins of "freeman" Richard Church who came with Winthrop in 1630 on the Arabella. Thanks to Funas, I now have a better understanding of what a "freeman" was in 1630, however I am further interested in what prompted Church and/or Winthrop to emigrate. Furnas states that the majority of emigrants were unsuitables and were, for the most part, asked to leave.

John Winthrop and Ann Dudley or Adam Winthrop and Anne Wainwright.
Hi John,
Had some time and have located my Webster file. The file is very large and I need more info. to locate your ancestor, Abraham Webster, Jr. There have been many Abraham Webster's. For example, in the LDS Family Search file there are, I believe, over 160 entries for Abraham Webster(some are obviously duplicates). If you can send me some additional info. such as approximate birthdate(s), names of spouse(s), etc., maybe I can help you. My family line connection with the Webster's, by the way, began with Grace Webster b.1725 in Plainfield, NJ who married John R. Shotwell III. She was the daughter of William Webster Jr. b.1692 in Woodbridge, NJ and Susannah Cowperthwaite. William Jr. was the son of William Webster b.1660 in Scotland and mary Unknown.
Suggest if you have additional info., you send to my home e-mail address which is "johnisjr@msn.com'.
Best regards,
John Shotwell
Mercer Island, WA
