Winthrop Sources....LOOK BEYOND ROOTSWEB!

I have been looking through the postings on the Winthrop family, and I have noticed a heavy reliance on the integrity of Rootsweb postings. The Winthrops are a well documented family, and a portion of the material on Rootsweb contains mistakes of one form or another. I would encourage all of you to access Library Indexing computers and dive further into sources like the New England Genealogical and Biographical Record, the records of the Massachussets Historical Society, and books such as Suffolk Manorial Families by James Muskett; Evidences of the Winthrops of Groton, co. Suffolk, England, available through Higginson Books, and the rare yet accessible, The Lion and the Hare, by Ellery Kirke Taylor. If anyone needs help with these or other sources, let me know!!

Tim Rodman
tandlrodman@aol.com

Lucy Winthrop married George Jaffry 10/4/1758

I'm trying to trace the parentage of the wife of my 3rd great granduncle, Lucy Dudley Wainwright 1753-1839 of Greenland, New Hampshire.

She was the ward of George Jaffrey III and his wife who was Lucy's aunt, Lucy Winthrop (1721-1776).

I come up with two possible parents for Lucy Winthrop. John Winthrop and Ann Dudley or Adam Winthrop and Anne Wainwright. But neither has a tree that includes Lucy Dudley Wainwright.

Can anybody help me?

Samuel March

Hi. I'm wondering if anyone out there in cyberspace knows anything about the offspring of John Still Winthrop and Elizabeth Sherriffe (I'm not sure about the spelling of Sherriffe). I know the names of their children (Benjamin, Robert, Elizabeth, Margaret, Charles, and Henry). I'd like to know about the continued Winthrop line. I'm a descendant of Margaret, so the surname changes. Does anyone know about the grandchildren of John Still Winthrop and Elizabeth?

Hi! It's me again. I was looking over my records and saw a few oddities. If someone could clear things up for me, I appreciate it.

1. What was the birthdate of John Winthrop who was gov. of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. I know he was born in Jan, but could be the 12th or 23rd, and could be 1587 or 1588.

2. Was this same John Winthrop's fourth wife Martha Rainsborough or Martha Cotymore?

3. Second generation John Winthrop (b. 2-12-1606, d. 4-5-1676): was his first marriage to Martha Jones or Martha Fones?

4. Second John Winthrop had nine children with his second wife, Elizabeth Reade. I don't have the name of child #9. Does anyone know what it is?

5. Third John Winthrop (also called Fitz-John): was he born in 1638 or 1639?

6. Fitz-John's brother, General Wait Still Winthrop had six kids. The first two are John Winthrop. Did the first one die as an infant?

Thanks in advance for any info I get.
You can do this for a small fee, and many of the titles are available through the Library of Congress. If you need some titles to work with, let me know.

Tim Rodman
tandlrodman@aol.com

I have recently purchased a book entitled The Oxford History Of The American People by Samuel Eliot Morison. It lists a good deal of information on the Winthrop family in reguards to history. It also shows the Winthrop Coat Of Arms. Here are the Winthrop's mentioned in the book...
Fitz-John Winthrop
Gov. John Winthrop of Conn.
Gov. John Winthrop of Mass.
Prof. John Winthrop
Theodore Winthrop

This book and another that I've purchased lists thousands of names. I am willing to do lookups and send pictures that I may have. I also have maps from different time periods. Just let me know what you are looking for.

Need help locating Ellen Telford Winthrop, born in Roxburghshire, Scotland 1840+, daughter of Maxwell Telford and Grace Douglas Hall. Her name could have been Isabella. She married Mr. Winthrop and moved to New Zealand about 1860-70.
She was living in 1900 (from family notes). We would so much like to know something of her life and family. Can anyone direct me to a source as I am unfamiliar how to obtain the genealogy information in New Zealand. Thank you, Marian

Winthrop Documentation

Sources are available that trace the Winthrop Descendants down much further than most people are aware of. The first one is quite rare, "The Lion and the Hare"....which charts many of the branches of Gov. John Winthrop's family to the early 20th century. The second is "Suffolk Manorial Families" by Muskett, which not only charts the Winthrops in England and Mass., but it also branches out to the lines in Antigua, England and Ireland. The third and perhaps the most comprehensive source is "Evidences of the Winthrops of Groton, co. Suffolk, England" It deals with the Winthrops, the Brownes, the Ponders, the Burtons, the Downings and many other associated families.

Mary Winthrop married Joshua Colver

I am actually researching my Culver relatives. I printed an ancestral file on Joshua Colver who may have married Mary Winthrop, daughter of John Winthrop. In everything that I have found up to this time shows Joshua Colver married Elizabeth Ford. Can anyone help with who Mary Winthrop married, she was born 9/15/1644. This ancestral file shows she died in 1653 which of course makes her dead when all her children with Joshua were born. I know I have a mess and I want to get it straightened out. Help..........sandi

Their names are Rosa & Max Weintraub and the year according to the censuses was 1891.Because I could not find thm in the 1891 I began looking into 1890 and into Canadian crossings-altho St Albans and Detroit happen to late.

Hiltons in S.C. don't connect to John Winthrop

I have uncovered a problem with the assumed connection between the Pascal Hilton and Sarah Templeton family of Gaffney, S.C. and the Hilton line that progresses back to Governor John Winthrop of Mass. Bay Colony fame. There is an article in the New England Genealogical and Historical Register, vol. 124, October, 1970 that is written on this family, beginning with Ens. Joseph Hilton and Rebecca Atkinson. It specifically states on page 295 that their son Joseph and the Joseph Hilton, father of Pascal Hilton, are not the same people. The article is fully referenced, and I encourage all who are interested to look it up for further review.

I am looking for information on Edwin Alfred Winthrop. I know he was b Jan 21, 1840 somewhere in USA. Different census reports state Alabama. Texas, NY and NJ. I have a letter stating that his father and brother were born in England but he was not.

He married Clara A. Goodlife in Marion Co. Texas June 1867. They had 9 children.

Clara died. I'm not sure of date.
I found him throghout Texas before and after her death.

He married my ggrandmother Ada Clawana Crawford in Angelina County. They had 6 children. The youngest was born when he was 84.

I would appreciate any information on his father, brother, etc.
