My husband is 41 and was adopted as baby. We recently learned his birth parents names and Carey Theodore Wise was his birth father (with his 2nd wife). With our search we found and talked to Louis (lewis?) wise but have lost his phone number and now are in search of it again. I've spent all day looking for my husbands 2 half siblings Kenneth and Linda Wise and to try and find Louis's phone number again. If you have any information on them or any other family history we'd love to have it.

Their mothers name was Mary and she died when the boys were young. I hope to put some of these pieces together. Does this help you.

Samuel Wise of Ripley Co., IN

I'm looking for the parents and origin of Samuel Wise, b. abt 1785 VA according to US censuses of 1850 thru 1880. He may be related to the Accomack Co. VA Wises because Samuel and his wife, Elizabeth, had sons with names Parker and Tully. These are prominent family names found among Eastern Shore Virginia Wises. I am a descendant of Samuel's son, George Washington Wise. According to Jennings Cropper Wise's book, "Col. John Wise of England and Virginia (1617 - 1695), His Ancestors and Descendants" the VA Wises were quite devoted to our first president. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: John C. Wise - Sarah Jane Goodwin

Attn: Kate-take another look at the 1880 census Gaines [or Garner?],Pottawatamie, Iowa. It appears that John Wise 27y, b. PA & Sarah 31y, wife, b. IN & 2-yr-old daughter, Rusta, or Gusta b. Iowa, are enumerated in the household of J.D. HAYWOOD 75y b. MA & his wife, Sarah E. 61y b. NH.
Enumerated just above is another HAYWOOD family. Is there any connection of the HAYWOOD/WISE families? Also, look carefully at the handwriting of the census enumerator. He writes a very clear 'A' when he enumerates an 'Alice'elsewhere on the page. He writes a very unusual 'G' when he enumerates a 'George' elsewhere on the page. The first letter of the 2-yr-old WISE dau is very difficult to decipher, but I doubt it is an 'A' at the beginning of her name.
Just some thoughts. Good luck in your continuing search.
Hi All,

John C Wise born about 1853 Pa, marries Sarah Jane Goodwin in Boomer, Pottawattamie, Iowa on 28 Feb 1874. The have one child I can find in the 1880 Census, but the name is fairly odd. It looks like Ansta or Austa. Anyway, Sarah becomes insane around 1881, is admitted to the State Insane Asylum where she dies in 1882.

I can find no trace before or after of John C Wise or the child.

Any help would be incredibly lucky. This is a huge wall for me.

Thanks so much

Kate

Thank you so much for the clues!

I will start digging that direction.

I did find an article written just a few months after her death detailing the gruesome conditions of the asylum where she was sent.
Lorraine:

Good questions. Some of us have been looking for a link between the Devonshire Wises and the English Wises who came to Maryland (Richard) and Virginia (e.g., Col. John) in the middle to late 1600's. A Matthew Wise put forth a conjecture, but no real proof. Maybe its DNA testing for all of us.

- Laurie Wise

Wise Family Shelby County Ohio

I;m tracing the ancestry of Andrew Wise who was born in Pa in 1796 or so, and died in Wabash County, Indiana in 1868. He married Mary Serfass (Ceirfoss, in the marriage records) in 1821 in Sidney, Ohio. Andrew is listed in the 1820 census in Shelby County, as are John Wise and Jacob Wise. I think Jacob could be Andrew's father. I found a Jacob Wise who was earlier in Northampton County, Pa, which is where the Serfass's were at the same time period. I'm interested in knowing whether I am on the right track, here. Does anyone have documentation saying Yea or Nay?

Also, Jackson Wise married Charity Botkin in Shelby County, Ohio in 1836. I'm thinking he may be the son of either John or Jacob. Jackson died also in Wabash County, Indiana in 1893. Does anyone have any documentation, or insight, into his parents?

Thank you for your help, and if I can help you, let me know.

Janice in Indiana

All I've seen is an abstract, listing Andrew and Samuel Wise and not even specifying the relationship. I'm not likely to get to Shelby County any time soon, so if you would like to check for the will, I'd love it. Please don't make a special trip, though.

I suspect that Mary Serfass, Andrew Wise's wife, died in Shelby County sometime prior to 1850, but I don't know if there would be a will.

Oh, I forgot to reply to your question whether Jackson Wise could be Andrew Jackson Wise. I know there is an Andrew Jackson Wise who ended up in the south somewhere; this is not the one I'm tracing. I've seen him referred to as Jackson George, but I'm not sure where the George came from, either.

Thanks again!

Janice in Indiana

Janice in Indiana

Thanks for your response. In looking at the map, Shelby County and Greene County are close enough that I do need to look into this family. Andrew named his sons (that I know of) David, John, Samuel, and Philip (Philip was for his wife's father), which don't seem to be names that link to your Richard and Thomas, but then, I don't find a Jacob, either, and I'm thinking Jacob could be Andrew's father.

It is interesting that your Wise is connected to a Bodkin/Botkin, also.

Last evening I reviewed my files from York County and found the following information that was part of an information packet sent to me several years ago from the York County Heritage Trust:

George Wise: Founding member of Stehli’s Lutheran and Reformed Church in 1784. Married Christiana. George died in 1803. Children: Elizabeth (Esther), Nancy and Jacob. Jacob's children from his first wife (name unknown) were George d. 1835, John 1805-1887, Mary 1812-1884 and Katie who "died young." Jacob's children from his second wife (Mary Nicoll) were Jacob 1824-1897 and Andrew (no dates available

I believe the last Jacob (1824-1897)mentioned above is likely the father of your George Washington Wise. I believe the George Wise who died in 1803 was the one born at sea and he was a younger brother of my ancestor Johan Erhard Weiss. His parents were Johan Georg Weiss and Anna Catharina Weiss of Lustadt, Germany who immigrated to America in 1738. Johan Georg's and Anna Catharina's family is documented in the church records at Lustadt, but of course the record of the George, born at sea, is not there.

Contact me at neilel@aol.com for any questions and/or further information.

Neil E.

Actually I believe I may be related to this family. I think the George who was born at sea was a few generations earlier than your George Washington Wise. The same thing happened in my family tree. The shipboard birth got
attributed to a later George, who was actually a descendant of the original. The George born at sea was on the Friendship which docked in Philadelphia in Sept. of 1738. I am descended from a brother (Erhard) of George. The
family settled first in Montgomery County, just outside of Philadelphia and later came to York County. It was George's nephew, Philip (my ggg grandfather) who came to York County, but there was a George Wise living in Lower
Chanceford Township at that time, married to Christianna and they lived in the same township as Philip and although I don't have positive proof, I think it is very likely that he was the George born at sea. He would have been 52
years old in 1790. On my website at _www.neilelvick.com_
(http://www.neilelvick.com) there is a gedcom and a family history book. The Wise family is covered in chapter 11 of the book and the family tree is included in the
gedcom.

Neil E.
In my tree I have a Michael Weiss born 12 June 1769 in Montgomery County, PA and died 25 April 1842 in Luzerne County, PA. He was married to Anna Margaretha Kaiser, born 7 Sept. 1760 and died 11 April 1834. They were married in 1789. I only have records of two children, a son John Jacob Weiss, b. 31 Jan. 1791 and a daughter Mary Magdalena Weiss born 12 April 1793. Your Samuel born in the early 1800's could very well have been another son in this family. Samuel was a name used often in this extended family. In the later 1800's other members of this extended family were in Licking County, so there could very well be a connection here. Michael Weiss was a younger brother of my ancestor, Philip Weiss who Anglicized the name to Wise. The family is traced back to the town of Lustadt, Germany. The emigration to America was in 1738.

Janice, I may be of some help. I have a Thomas Wise who lived in Shelby Co. died 1867. In his will, he willed 1/4 of 1/13 to William, Joseph, John and Daniel. Daniel lived in Shelby Co. but the others I had not found after 1840.
The father of Thomas was Richard Wise who lived and died in Greene Co. Ohio, Bath Twp. 1814.Born abt. 1860.
Other Wise's in Greene Co. were Jacob, Joseph and John in 1840. Also a lady who I think was Richards wife Elizabeth Betsy Bodkin.
Jacob was born 1790-1800, Daniel 1802, Joseph and John 1810-1820.
I believe that William, Joseph,John,Danial are sons of Richard and maybe Jacob a brother since the four are mentioned in Thomas's will.
What do you think?
I will be looking at the census of Wabash Co. Ind. to look for them.
Also do you think that Jackson Wise's full name was Andrew Jackson Wise ???
jaynema@earthlink.net
Jayne

Re: Wise Family of Pennsylvania-Ohio

I am also trying to trace my Wise family in York County, PA. My mom was a Wise and I can't get past her grandfather, George Washington Wise. His father was Jacob Wise, born in Pennsylvania. Jacob Wise was married to Sarah, also born in Pennsylvania. I have a copy of George Wise's marriage license (to Maria Myers) so I know the names are correct. The place of their birth is from a census.

My grandmother had told me that George was born onboard ship from Germany but the census lists place of birth as Pennsylvania. I've had no choice but to stop believing that lovely tale. I'd like to know more about this branch of my ancestral tree. Anyone else out there related to my George Washington Wise?

I am also looking for George Wise, and believe middle initial to be "A." He was married to Grace Albright in Darke County OH in 1911. He is my great grandfather.

Mary Wise, b. 1839, PA, married Rudy Thrush, b. 1838, PA

Looking for the family of Mary Wise, born in 1839 in PA. She married Rudy Thrush, b. 1838 in PA and they moved to Hardin County, Ohio by 1863.

I have found the grave of a David Wise next to the plot where Mary and Rudy are buried and I suspect he may be a family member, or perhaps her father. This David was in hardin County, Ohio with his family in 1870. He died in 1873. David indeed had a daughter named Mary who fits in with this theory. David and his wife Catherine had 12 children, all born in PA.

Just wondering if anybody had anything on Mary.

looking for my nephew

Looking for Eddie Wise born in Flint, Michigan about 1975 Father Edward Wise born around 1956 mother Donna Verrette Wise who latter became Donna Clements and moved to Arkansas. He and his mother had been estranged when she past away in 2008 I don't know if he even knows she is dead. His stepfather wasn't any help, our father and I didn't find out she was dead for two months. I don't know what happened and don't care I loved my nephew and the last time I seen him he was at his Wise grandparents house he was still a little boy and soon after he went to live with his dad after my sister and Ed divorced, they moved to another state and I never saw him again I'd like to find him. I've tried to do some searches but there are thousands of Ed Wise's
