WISSLERs of Bergen County, NJ

Looking for info on the WISSLER family. I have a John J. WISSLER & wife Frances (maiden name GOWAN or GOWAR) in River Edge, Bergen Cty, NJ, owners of River Edge Printing Co. Both were probably born in the late 1880s, locations unknown. I don't know what years John Sr. and Frances died.

Two sons I know of. Both were also printers at the family's company:

John WISSLER, b. 23 Nov. 1901, location unknown, m. Helen (PETERSEN) NEUMANN (her 2nd marriage) sometime in the 1920s. They met in NYC and moved to River Edge, NJ, across the street from the WISSLER family home. John WISSLER Jr. helped raise Helen's children. They had no children of their own. John d. Aug. 1972, Helen d. Jan. 1972.

Louis "Louie" WISSLER, b. 11 June 1905, location unknown, m. Lydia "Sissie" KREBS, 25 June 1927 in NYC. They lived in Bergen County, NJ, but later moved (retired?) to Cape Cod. They had two daughters that I know of, Dorothy & Marilyn. Louis died Feb. 1983 in Barnstable, MA; Lydia d. May 2000 in NJ.

I don't know if there were any other WISSLER siblings to John SR. If you think you have a connection, please post here AND email me directly.

Hi all,

Received the SS-5 application for the John WISSLER I mentioned in my previous post. Thankfully, his mother's name was typed in. All instances I have of her name on various documents were handwritten and hard to decipher. His father's middle name was on the SS-5 as well.

Anyway, her name was Frances GAUEN and his father's full name was John Jacob WISSLER. Please refer to my previous message for other particulars.

Any connection or clues, please post here, or click on my name at the top of this post to see my email address.

Hello Rita! I too am a descendent of Jacob and Magdalena Wissler. I have seen the Wissler History Book and know of the story of their crossing. I had come across an article that stated the only ship that crossed in the year 1720 that carried Swiss and German immigrants was the "Laurel" with John Cappel being captain of that ship, so I am assuming that is the ship that they crossed in. Can I ask you where you found the info on Jacob's parents, because that is great to finally go back not one but 2 generations! I thought we'd have to travel to Germany to figure that out. Also, I'm assuming that you are a descendent as well so we are distant cousins somehow I'm sure! I have some more information about Jacob and Magdalena's children (There were 10). My great-great grandfather was Jonas, who traveled to Lancaster to farm. I would love to share information with you. Oh.. by the way.. I've been to Jacob and Magdalena's graves. You can still read Jacob's stone, Magdalena just has a rock.
buckelvis@hotmail.com Thanks!!!

(My information tells me that Jacob and Magdalene had 10 children). I would love to hear all that you know, and I would love to share everything I know as well! My e-mail address is buckelvis@hotmail.com. I check it every day (unlike the message board obviously!) Thanks!

Thanks so much for that information. I did have most of the names that you gave me. I didn't know that Jacob served in the British Navy though. Do you know the name of the ship that came came over on? How did you come across the Wissler Family History book? What do you know about the spelling of the name? I found some info that said that it was Wissler until Jacob came to America. Then it changed to Wisler. Then his son, Christian, started spelling it with an h making it Whisler. In 1800, it became Whistler, but one branch of the family took the name without the t. That's what I've come up with so far. I may be wrong.
I have information dating back to 1570. None of it has been verified by actual documents. If you're interested in this info anyway, just let me know. I do have more children for Jacob and Magdalena Wissler other than Andrew. Here they are:

Christian Whisler b. 1742 Montgomery, PA
d.1827 Cumberland, PA m. Maria Longaker

Abraham Whisler, Ann Whisler, Sam Whisler,
Susanna Whisler, Jacob Whisler, Isaac Whisler,
Magdalena Whisler, and John Whisler.

I don't have any dates or facts on these siblings. I hope this information is helpful to you.
At this point, I'm probably already as far as I'm going to be able to get without investing tons more time and money. Thanks for the response. Good luck.

-Veronica

My Grandmother, Edith Dilts of Anita, Cass Co., Iowa, had a sister named Harriet Dilts. Harriet married a man named Frank(?) Wissler. I think they lived in Minn. for awhile. They had 2 sons, Rod (Oregon) and Wendell (Washington). Rod and Wendell's parents divorced and their grandmother, Ida Petty Dilts McCord of Anita, Iowa, raised them. I have lots of pictures of them but don't know anything about them. My family wasn't close and I only learned about these relatives when I inherited an album of photos and letters that had been my grandmothers. I live in Iowa but haven't researched this family. I intend to go to Cass Co. someday to look for things like this.

My great-grandfather was Jacob WISSLER who, we think,
came from Germany, to settle and farm in Cass County,
Iowa, near the town of Atlantic. Born 1840, died 1901.
Had loads of kids. We think he also had a brother who
settled in the same part of Iowa.
Be interested to hear if this is useful.

Otis Halverson

Hi Mike, thanks for the quick response. It sounds like your
Wissler line came to America quite a bit sooner than mine. My Jacob
came here as a young boy about 1851, and we don't know his parents'
names. They may have come from the Schleswig-Holstein area. We can't find any info
in Filby under that spelling, and plan to try
some variant spellings, perhaps this week.

Ulric appears to be about three generations ahead of where I
am at the moment, and likely there's no link to what I'm doing.
Unless I get lucky and find out something about them in Germany.

Best regards,
Otis

Dawn, what a surprise. I hadn't been back
here in a few months. The man who married
Harriet Dilts was Burt H Wissler, my
grand-mother's youngest brother. I have
record of Rodney and Wendell and three
children of Rodney. But I don't have any
dates for all of this. Do you? You can find
my family info at worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/
and you can reach me off-board through there
if you wish.
PS - I also have (from a list written by a
niece of Burt before her death) the name of
another son of Burt and Harriet's named
Robert Lee Wissler. Does this tie in with
your records? I have a portrait of Burt as
an adult if you're interested. Let me know.

Best regards,
Otis
Dear Veronica:
I think you will find your answer if you look at John David Wissler's message written on Aug. 8, 2000.
His message follows in quotes.
"To those interested in Jacob Wissler.Iam a descendant of Jacob Wissler and his wife Magdalena, who emigrated from Switzerland around 1720....They had a son Andrew Wissler-1735-1802 who married Anna Magdalena Groff{GRAFF} in Lancaster co; Pennsylvania. They had only 3 children....Jacob Wissler-1776-1853 married to Anna Eby-1777-1829was one of them. They had 10 children...Jacob Wissler-1803-1855 married Barbara Bomberger-1805-1872, was one of them .I have a lot of family info ,I live in Lancaster co. and have access to a lot of first hand info. ie family bibles ,documents etc. I am a decendant of Levi Wissler-1817-1881who married Fanny Hess-1827-1895,he was Jacob Wissler -1803 brother. Well, who ever wants to get in touch you have my best ...John David Wissler"

My husband is also a descendant of this Wissler family.
Veronica:
I have the Wissler Family History book. According to this book Jacob Wissler was b. 1700. He emigrated to America in 1720. On the way his ship was overtaken by a British Naval Ship and he was pressed into service for the British Navy for 3 yrs. Magdalena, his wife, continued on to America alone and worked for a farmer in Germantown, PA till her husband arrived.
They settled in the Brandywine Valley.
Jacob d. 1752 Magdalena d. 1784
According to some sources Jacob was supposedly from Switzerland, but according to the Wissler Family History he was a German mennonite who had emigrated to Switzerland due to religious persecution. Immediately after their marriage the set out from Switzerland, traveled down the Rhine to the port of Rotterdam, and from there set out for America.
I have found some info stating that Jacob Wissler was the son of Christian Wissler of Langnau, Bern, Switzerland.
Christian's parents were Jacob Wissler b. Mar. 15, 1621-22
and Madlena Frederich from Sumiswald, Bern, Switzerland.

The only child of Jacob and Magdalena Wissler that I have record of is Andrew Wissler who traveled to Lancaster county, PA and married Anna Magdalena Groff.

Hope this helps. If you have any other info please let me know.
