Dear Cousin:

As a Witcher descendant I am often frustrated when trying to sort out the various members of this prolific family of distinction and service.

It is my present opinion that to get to Nancy we first need to sort out her grandfather's wives. There may be as many as four wives Majors and Atkinson are names which are often put forward. More attention to the husbands of his daughters, such as Razor and Morrison

I would be pleased to collaborate with one and all to achieve a cleaner family group for MAJ William Witcher, and family, which would lead to more accuracy with Nancy Witcher (Mrs. Thomas King).

Re: John Disken Witcher family -- Texas

There may be a John Disken Witcher somewhere in Texas but not in the family I grew up in. His name was John DEE Witcher and his only wife was Miriam Lelita Wolf. John is buried with his brothers Clyde Nance Witcher & Charles Oscar Witcher on Blk 3, Lot 19 in Oak Hill Cemetery (Lampasas, Texas), all sons of Charles Neman Witcher from Georgia. John's wife was buried on their daughter's lot, Minnie Olene Witcher Brown, Blk 8, Lot 27 Oak Hill Cemetery (Lampasas, Texas). John & "Lelia" Witcher had one daughter, there may have been a baby boy born before Minnie Olene but he did not live as that is what my cousin told me. Omar L. Brown had one son named Kenneth Brown by his first wife.........For many years John Dee Witcher lived in Brownwood, Brown County, Texas, he died there on January 06, 1927. He was ill for many months and wanted to be buried with his brothers; due to space on the lot, Minnie Olene buried her mother on the Brown cemetery lot. From her 2nd. Cousin of Minnie Olene Witcher Brown....Janie Kay Richardson of Lampasas, Texas

Ephraim Witcher b. abt 1749 Pittsylvania Co VA, d. 1816 Pittsylvania Co VA

There has been much confusion regarding the Ephraim Witcher (b. 1749, d. 1816 Pittsylvania Co VA)who married Jensey Adams Rowden and another Ephraim Witcher who married Elizabeth Phipps.

I have copies of documents from Pittsylvania Co VA which may shed some light on the Ephraim who married Jensey Adams Rowden.

11Feb1796 Marriage Bond for Ephraim Witcher and Jensey Rowden

Letter of Consent for Jensey Adams Rowden to marry Ephraim Witcher from her mother Sally Rowden.

15Apr1816 Orders 17-130 William and Vincent Witcher qualified as administrators of estate of Ephraim Witcher dec'd

19Jan1818 Vincent Witcher appointed quardian of Eliza, Nancy, James and Agnes Witcher, orphans of Ephraim Witcher, decd

William Witcher appointed guardian of Ephraim Witcher, orphan of Ephraim Witcher decd

19Feb1820 Accts Current Partial Division of the estate of Ephraim Witcher decd. Heirs: Caleb Witcher; Giny Law, formerly Witcher, Agnes Witcher; Elizabeth Wingfield, formerl Witcher, Ephraim Witcher; James Witcher; Nancy Witcher. Report of Peyton Graves, Peyton Young, James Nowlin

Ephraim Witcher, who was orphaned at the death of Ephraim Witcher(m. Jensey Adams Rowden) is my ancestor. He married Nancy Young and moved to MO between 1840 and 1850 along with several of his siblings and their families. He and Nancy can be found in the 1850 and 1860 MO census'. They lived in Pettis and Saline counties.

It appears that it would be difficult for the Ephraim Witcher who married Elizabeth Phipps and lived in NC to be the same Ephraim who married Jensey. Ephraim and Jensey had children, who are mentioned in his estate, and were born in the same time frame as Ephraim and Elizabeth Phipps children appear to be born. Perhaps the Ephraim who married Elizabeth Phipps is nephew of William Witcher.

Does anyone have any other information on the Ephraim Witcher who married Elizabeth Phipps?

If anyone would like digital copies of the documents mentioned above please correspond through- hodges.genealogy@cox.net

Julie (Hodges) Rush
Gilbert AZ

Hey chica08, I just got your email, today. While i can't view your family's family tree at the moment. Here is some information i can give you regarding Connie Witcher, my great-grandfather. His (Connie Witcher) father was Wesley Witcher, which according to my research is your grandmother's brother. So therefore, Connie Witcher, my great-grandfather, is your grandmother's nephew. My great-grandfather resided in Penhook, Va until his death in 1993. Email me for more information: jr_dale@hotmail.com. Would love to discuss our families.

found this Witcher information in my files, maybe it can help some. Don't remember where I obtained it.
Jean Brand websterbrand@sbcglobal.net
John Witcher's nephew:
The Witcher-Clement Case 1860
From "An Old Virginia Court" by Marshall Wingfield, D.D., Memphis, Tennessee, The West Tennessee Historical Society.

The killing of three Clement brothes---James,William and Ralph by Capt. Vincent Witcher, John A Smith, Vincent Oliver Smith, Samuel Swanson and Addison Witcher. Addison Witcher was the son of Vincent Witcher. John and Vincent Oliver Smith were his grandsons. Samuel Swanson was his son-in-law.

James Clement married Victoria Smith on March13, 1858. He was one of ten children of Dr George W Clement, born1786; married 1811; died 1867. Dr Clement was educated at Hampton-SydneyCollege and the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania. His mother, Stella Smith, was the daughter of Major John Smith of LewisIsland. Their Franklin County home was called "Mountain View".

Victoria Smith was the daughter of Albert G Smith and the granddaughter of Capt. Vincent Witcher. She was born in 1837. The Smith family regarded the Clement family as of inferior social station. Dr Clement was very proud of the beauty and wit of his daughter-in-law,Victoria. Two of her old sweethearts continued their attentions afterher marriage. (of innocent nature) They were William P Gilbert andSamuel D Berger. Her husband, James Clement, accused her of unfaithfulnessand humiliated her. Fearing physical violence, Victoria Smith Clement, fled from her husband on the night of August 24, 1859, and found refugein the home of Sherwood Y Shelton, who lived a mile distant. Sheleft behind her six month old baby, Leila Maud, born March 1, 1859, sogreat was her terror., In three weeks, the taking of depositionswas begun at Dickenson's Store, to be read as evidence in the suit thenpending between John A Smith, next fried of Victoria Smith Clement, plantiff, against James R Clement, defendant. The taking of depositions continueduntil February 25, 1860, when the Clement brothers were killed. Capt.Vincent Witcher objected to having Elizabeth W Bennett make part of herstatement on Saturday "and then being left in the hands of the oppositeparty to be picked until Monday." He made the statement that shewas under control of the Clements.Ralph Clement said "that whoever saidthat was a damned lie." Capt. Vincent Witcher drew a "five shooter" and started firing at Ralph Clement. Addison Witcher conducted theexamination for the plantif. (Robert Mitchell, Justice of the Peace, appeared to have forgotten everything that transpired).

The bodies of the Clements were riddled with bullets and gashed with knives. William Clement was disembowled; James Clement's throat was slit from ear to ear. Ralph Clement lived three hours and made a dying declaration: I never attempted to draw an arm. Addison Witcher caught and held me and told them to come shoot me. A damned rasccal Robert W Powell stated in his deposition that Addison Witcher held RalphClements while Vincent Oliver Smith shot him. George Finney statedin his deposition that John Anthony Smith shot and stabbed James Clement. Both James and William Clement were reclining on a bed in the CountingRoom when the firing began. Some thought the early firing came fromthe bed. The Pistols of both James and William Clement had been fireduntil empty, but Ralph had not drawn a gun. The three bodies werecarried from Washington Dickinson's Counting room, in a farm wagon, andburied in a simplee grave near the shaded driveway to the old brick house, their boyhood home.

The defendants claimed self-defense and chargeswere dismissed, March 23, 1860. In June 1860, the depositions werepublished in book form by Dr. G W Clement, Sr.

Vincent Witcher Lodge #87, chartered in 1852,made an investigation. After 1860 no reference was made to VincentWitcher, something happened to him but it was not reported. Therewere no returns from Lodge #87 from 1860-1866. It finally lost itscharter..
____________

Dr. George W Clement's mother, Stella, was thedaughter of John Smith of Lewis Island, son of Mr John Smith of "The Pocket". 1700
(Clement: History of Pittsylvania County)
______

The will of George w Clement is in Will Book 3,pg 2--Pittsylvania Co Clerk's Office, in which he names the children ofJames and Ralph Clement, deceased, and his other seven children by twowives. How was she related to Rebecca (Irby) Marlow?

Bloody Battle Saw Two Killed
Comanche Moon Strikes Fear

January 1870
Within four years during the terrible decade of the 1860's, two militia officers named Carter were killed by Indians in the country drained by the Lampasas River and Cowhouse Creek.
Both men were frontier leaders, both had families and the loss of each was deeply felt by a people who feared the full Comanche moons next to the wrath of God.

On October 11, 1861, Lieutenant Robert Carter with nine men of Captain Frank Cotton's company of Hamilton County Minute Men, set out on a ten day scout on the headwaters of the Lampasas River.

Those under Carter's command were Grundy Morris, A.W. Witcher, James Mitchell, Joe Manning, Simpson Lloyd, John Witcher, John Hurst, Dave Morris and one other man.

On October 19, without having seen any Indians, they were at the headspring of the Lampasas River, within a day's ride of their homes. Lieutenant Carter sent J.W. Witcher out to shoot a deer for their final camp, which was to be several miles farther on toward Hamilton.

When they reached that place, and Witcher did not make an appearance, Grundy Morris was sent to Lookout Mountain, near present Caradan in Mills County, to search for Witcher, and perhaps assist him in killing a deer.

Just as Morris reached the crest of Lookout Mountain, Witcher, in the valley below, was attacked by Indians.

Witcher and the Indians were about two miles away, but in plain view of Morris, who watched the chase until Witcher abandoned his horse and ran into a thicket.

Morris, knowing that he could nothing to assist Witcher, turned his horse and raced back to the command, hoping that Witcher could hold the Indians at bay until he could lead the detachment back to his aid

Morris had not been gone long when the Indians took Witcher's horse and left him doubtless having observed that he was well armed and could surely kill the first Indian who entered the thicket.

After nightfall, Witcher left the thicket and soon became lost.

When Morris reached the camp Carter immediately ordered a march to Witcher's relief.

Traveling on their back trail, they reached the spring from which Witcher had left them just as night descended. At a steep ravine just above the spring, their horses suddenly alerted them to the presence of something in their rear by snorting and tossing their heads.
They then discovered that the Indians, who had apparently meant to camp at the spring, had fallen in behind them.
Carter did not hesitate a second before giving the order to attack, and the Indians, of about equal numbers, met them halfway. It was now full dark, and difficult to distinguish friend from foe, but at last, by shouts and whistles on the part of the white men, and birdcalls on the part of the Indians, the two parties regrouped on opposite sides of the ravine.

Carter quickly ordered a second charge, and the fighting became hand to hand. John Hurst and Grundy Morris were seriously wounded when the whites next withdrew to their side of the ravine, and Lieutenant Carter could not be found

A third attack was made, which caused the Indians to retreat. The white men could tell that several Indians, and several of the Indians' horses, were wounded. If any were killed, their comrades carried them away, as was their custom.

When the minutemen reached their camp, Carter was not there, as they had hoped he would be.

So highly was the lieutenant regarded that A.W. Witcher, a brother Of the man first attacked by the Indians, and J.R. Townsend crept hack in the night to the battleground and searched the area on hands and knees for his body, but failed to find him.

On the following day, Sunday, the battered party made its way home, as the wound of John Hurst, who had an arrow lodged in his spine, demanded attention,

On Monday, a search party recovered the body of Robert Carter. He was shot in a dozen places.

The settlers carried his remains to Langford's Cove (present day Evant) and buried him there in the Langford Cemetery.

Four years later, in 1866, C. C. Carter, member of a minute man company in the northwest part of Lampasas County, started one night from his house to that of his son in law, about four miles away. When he had reached a point within a mile of his destination, Indians fired on him from ambush. Though mortally wounded, he put spurs to his horse and outran the Indians, who attempted to cut him to his son in law's front gate, where he fell from his horse.

His daughter ran to him even as the Indians turned back, and he died in her arms.

He is buried in Center Cemetery east Of Lometa

Witcher Families
The Witcher Family Cemetery, Established 1848 (?) The Langhornes of Virginia, James Fox, Simon and Schuster, 2000.

Ancient History of the Distiguished Surname "Witcher"

The Border region of England and Scotland produced some of the most illustrious family names the world has ever known; names such as Armstrong, Nixon, Graham, Bell, Carson, Irving, Rutherford and so on and includedin this group is the surname "Witcher."

Professional analysts have researched the history of lowland Scotland and northern England, including many private collections of genealogical records, the Inquistitio, the Exchequer Rolls of schotland, the Ragman Rolls, the Hearth Rolls, the Domesday Book, parish cartularies, baptismals, and tax rolls, and revealed that the first record of the name "itcher" was found in Stirlingshire where they had been seated from very ancient times.

William Dyer, son of Wm. Dyer & Dicey (Hammer?) received funds from Grainger Co. in about 1813 for taking care of an elderly John Witcher. All of these people previously lived in Pittsylvania Co, VA.
Ephraim supposedly had 12 children, so most of them are not included in the will. I do have a copy of the will at home and I will dig it out when I get there and see if the abstract covers all who are mentioned in it. There is nothing in my computer file that proves 12 children.

Tempy's father was John Witcher, Sr. I have no wife for him and have nothing else about his will except the following:
NOTES FOR JOHN WITCHER SR.:
John Witcher, who left will in Pittsyvania Co. dated 23 January 1834, proved 18 May 1834 (Will Bk. 1, p. 272). In that will he names a daughter "Tempy Witcher".

I don't think I have a copy of John's will but I will check to make sure. If I forget, remind me in a week.
Barbara
BWGood@aol.com

Ephraim Witcher had only one wife, Elizabeth Phipps as you can see from the abstract of his will:

Surry County, NC, Will Abstracts. 3:144. Surry Co., NC: Will of Ephraim (E) Witcher, 18 Nov. 1819. Children: Betsey Witcher, Nancy Witcher, and William. Son Lacy to have 83 acres called Lacefield’s Place. Son Benjamin to have negro boy Allen. Wife - Betsey. Exec: Stephen Potter, Lacy Witcher. Wit: Benjamin Potter, Leonard Roy. Proved Feb Court 1820.
(Note: The 1817 Surry Co. Tax list shows Ephraim Witcher with 443 A on Mitchells River with 4 slaves and John Witcher with 1 wp, 1 bp. Stephen Potter served in the War of 1812 from Surry Co. There are estate papers at the NC Archives.)

His son James did marry Tempy Witcher 31 Dec 1811, in Pittsylvania Co. VA. I don't have the other two James Witchers you asked about.

James and Tempy are my ancestors.
Barbara Good

I really need help with the Witcher family! The Ephraim Witcher cemetery records helped some but I still have a lot of questions.

I have Capt Wm's son Ephraim married to a Elizabeth Phipps 1st and they had 1 son James b 1791. This James married his 1st cousin Tempy Witcher - the daughter of John & Susannah Dalton Witcher. I SUSPECT THIS IS WRONG.
Then I show Ephraim married 2nd Jensey Adams in 1796 and had Caleb, Ephraim, John, Jensey, Agnes, Betsy, Nancy and another James?

Who was Mary Polly Witcher b 1806, who married William S Love 1 aug 1827 in Pittsylvania County. She was supposedly a daughter of a James Witcher bc 1780?

Who was James Witcher, bc 1800 who married Elizabeth Beavers 2 Jun 1821 in Pittsylvania County, VA?

As someone said - so many Ephraims, Wms, James, etc!

Any help on the 1st 3 generations of Capt Wm's descendants would be greatly appreciated!

Julie

I am desperate to find out who first listed Giddy as a Watson. Pittslyvania marriages list her as Giddy Rowden. In all my research I have not been able to tie Giddy to a Watson family, except by speculation by others. Would love to know answer. According to records I have searched no Witcher ever marriaged a Watson. Would love to know if proven wrong.
Leland Garton

My Caleb Witcher married Giddy Rowden 10 Dec. 1799, not a Watson. I wish someone could tell me where the Watson connection got started. No Witcher's married any Watson according to the printed marriages of Pittsylvania Co., Va. from 1709-1799. Ephraim married Jensy Adams and Caleb m. Giddy "Vashti" Rowden. (Vashti in census reoords and family Bible).

Caleb's last name was mispelled as Withers. the "c" was left out but he is immediately with Ephraim. The marriage date of Caleb and Giddy matches our family date.
Leland Garton

Witcher Confusion

Hi all, Here is what I know for sure:
My great-grandfather was William Marvin Witcher and his father was Captain William J. Witcher who Witcherville, Arkansas was named after.
I read on a post that William J. Witcher's parents were Lacy and Elizabeth Witcher.
Lacy's father was Ephriam Witcher born 1749.
Ephriam's father was William Witcher born 1724.

But I'm getting a ton of conflicting information. I have a chart on William Witcher (b. 1724) and it has an Ephriam but as a grandson born 1783, not a son born 1749. This chart also does not mention Ephriam as a son but I have read a will of William Witcher that mentions him as a son.

I've also always been told I was related to Nancy Langhorn Astor who is a descendent of Nancy Witcher Keen and I believe sister of the Ephriam Witcher born in 1783 - I haven't been able to connect all the dots.

Sorry about all the questions - I was so pleased to see so many Witchers online. I have a bit of info about the Witcherville Witchers and would be happy to share it.

Amy

Lacy Witcher (1783-1845), William J. Witcher (1829-1905)

I am searching for more information about these two. I know Lacy was married to Elizabeth Lyon and they had a child William J. Witcher. Does anyone know if they had more children or if the death date I have for Lacy is correct. A bio of William J. on ancestry.com says that Lacy died when William J. was an infant but that doesn't match my dates.

I also read on another board that a James Roberts who died in NC in 1834 left money for Elizabeth Lyon's children William and Susan (who may be William's twin) in his will. This person (who I have been unable to contact) seemed to suggest that James' son Jonathan might be the father of William and Susan. (The will said Elizabeth was now married to Lacy Witcher so I feel like it's the same people)

William J. Witcher is my gr-gr-grandfather so I am really interested in learning more about this situation.

I'm new to this - any ideas on how I should proceed?

Thanks!
Amy
