Hi Eve
Thank you for respoding to my post so quickly. So a bit of background. I now live in Australia so online research is the only type available to me. Mary E Withy was my maternal grandmother and she was the daughter of Thomas Withy b18th Jan 1842. He was the son of Thomas Withy B???? and Zillah Teagar b 31st may 1819. We can't find any reference to Thomas in census records other than a possible in 1851 to a private, presumably soldier, in Clarence and Foreshore Barracks who at 37 yrs is roughly the right age but no positive link to Zillah. We can see a marriage record for Thomas and Zillah in "London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921" which records marriage on 26 March 1838, The record gives his father also as Thomas Withey, with an 'e" and the transcription mispells Zillah and her father Samuel's surname.Zillah Withey is recorded as marrying John Waddilove in 1855. so what happened to Thomas? She died a Waddilove on 3rd September 1878.
Hope you can throw some light on our brickwall
Regards
Patricia

I have done research on this family as they are related to my father's family. George had an older sister named Mary Ann b1854 d1861 and younger sister Sarah b1867 and brother b1871. His father and mother were Thomas b1833 d1905 and Sarah b1827.
Thomas 4 siblings to my knowledge - Joseph b1834, Elizabeth b1837, Mary Ann b1839 d1855, and George b1841 who was my great grandfather.
Thomas and his siblings were the children of John Withey b1803 d1892. They were all born in Pucklechurch.

The following was copied from a photograph taken May 3, 2000 of Elijah and Melora Withey's tombstone in the Old Westfield Cemetery, Danielson, CT:

ELIJAH S. WITHEY/Died/June 4, 1894/Aged 93 years 9 months/& 29 days
MELORA B./His Wife/Died July 13, 1880/Aged 80 years 2 months/& 23 Days/"Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord"

I believe Melora Bartlett is the daughter of Edward and Rebecca Bartlett of Killingly, CT. She witnessed a sale of land in 1819 between Edward Bartlett and his son John (my 2nd great-grandfather). Unfortunately, I have no further information on Pascal Witney and his wife Mary Bartlett, who may not be Melora's sister.

I found your message when trying to search on Pascal Withey. I note the similarity between Melora Bartlett and Melona in the name of Elijah's wife below.

Jonathan Withey was born sometime near 1760. I have unverified notes that he had died by 1830 and that his wife's name was Mary.

He had at least 4 sons:
(1) James S Withey born ~ 1794 Brooklyn, Ct (m.Huldah)
(2) Pascal Withey born 1795-1800
(3) Elijah Withey born ~ 1802 Brooklyn, Ct (m.Melona)
(4) William P Withey born ~ 1805 Ct

I also think that he had 4 more sons.

Hi Barb,
When my brother and I were little kids, my parents took us up to Alpena every summer to visit my grandpa and my mom's sisters and brothers. My grandpa died in 1971 but I went once or twice after that and so did my brother. In July of 1976 my mom and dad and I went over the 4th Bicentennial weekend for a Olson reunion in Alpena We held it out to the Lutheran Church in Leer were my Olson/Olesen ancestors are buried and also spent an afternoon out at Besser Bell. We also saw the big 4th of July paraded downtown Alpena. I have not been to Alpena since. My mom and dad have been there 4 or 5 times mainly to attend funerals of my moms siblings. She was one of 9 kids and there are only 3 left now. Sure wish my health was better as I like to go to Alpena again sometime.

thanks again for ALL of your info, I really appreciate it!!!!

Karen

I simply do Withey research, so follow up whenever I find one. I don't yet know how Joseph is related... although I have some clues. But by chance we often vacationed at Harrisville, so I took advantage of the free time to do some reserach there and in nearby Alpena.

Witheys in Sommersetshire

I am a descendent of James and Jane Stitch Withey(s) who came to the United States from Sommersetshire England in 1842 with their children including sons William, George, Eli, and James, and daughters Caroline and Jane. The family settled in Springfield, IL and dropped the 's' from Witheys to Withey. James opened a carriage factory and George and Willian took over. In the Sangamon County history of the Withey Bros. is says that the Witheys' were clerks in the Church of England for four hundred years. Does anyone have any information about the Withey(s) family in Shepton Mallet or Stratton on the Fosse? I know there were remaining family members in England because there is mention of visiting them.

Hello Carole
I was very pleased to read your reply. I had thought before that there may have been a link with Walter William and Mary Quaif and my husband Dave's family, as the names of the children were so similar and recurred in our Withey line. George James was Dave's great great grandfather. His son Ermest Benjamin married Charlotte Lewer, and their son Ernest Benjamin was Dave's grandfather.

We have found out quite a bit about the Witheys and have some photos of Ernest William. Perhaps I can contact you directly and attach some files and we may be able to fill in a few gaps.

We know George James was married twice but nothing about his first wife yet. We have traced George James back to his parents George and Mary Ann Brown ( but know very little about Mary Ann Brown) and then back to William and Elizabeth, from George's baptism at Colchester in 1802.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Maureen
He is the adopted son of James Collins and Lucy Withey Collins.

In the 1930 census Harol, James and Lucy are living in Dwight, Huron Co., Michigan.

In the early 1940's James and Lucy managed cabins at Lake Van Etten in Michigan, Harold was with them.

Harold later moved tot he west side of the state of Michigan, he met his birth brother.
I now think William H. Withey perhaps is the son of an Orin and Ruth Withey. In 1880 we find them in Deshler Village, Henry Co. Also note consistency of age and birthplace of Wm H and parents between the two censuses.

So I think it is this Wm who is the son of Orin and Ruth.. but I've not yet placed Orin and Ruth.

Isaac b. 1825 died19 Dec. 1893 in Avon, Norfolk Co., Mass. and is buried in Union Cemetery in Brockton, Mass. His death record lists his parents as unknown, but he and his family were closely connected with a fwell documented amily that moved to Lee Co. Illinois, which makes me quite certain he will prove to be a son of Isaac and Polly (Russell) Withey. If so, he was born in Maine.

I had the Isaac who married Mary Moran as Isaac L., not Isaac R. but it is easy to misread initials. His actual birth record from Randolph indicates he b. May 31, 1855. on Main St., ev. in Randolph, but there is also a record in No. Bridgewater that says he b. April 25, 1855, this town. Other record, pr. a census, indicates b August 1855 ME

The last record I have in my database for him is the 1900 cnesus, when he and his family were in Stoughton, Norfolk Co. Mass. At that time he is 44, so I imagine there are further census records. I also lack the death record for him. I'd be pleased to receive any of this information.

I have a connection with the Withey family George James Withey had several children born in Newington, Kennington and Camberwell. He was married twice, his second wife was his former servant, Susan Dixon, and he had several children from the second marriage. Names of children include George, Federick, Walter, Arthur, Ada, Ernest, Albert Florence, Amy. Geore seemed to be multi skilled! In 1861 and1881 census his occupation was tailor, but in 1871 he was a fishmonger and his son George was a fish monger too in 1901.

I have seen another query regrding the Withey and Quaife family, ie Walter William and Mary Quaife on Genealogy.com on the Withey Family Genealogy Forum.

eliza and robert besgrove had four children elizabeth, martha, robert and another whose name evades me. eliza migrated to australia in 1857, and martha (annie) followed in 1863. both boys stayed in somerset and are described in the 1851 census as imbeciles. as eliza and her father and all the femily were christened at the kingsbury episcopi i doubt any relationship. the name withey derives from basket weaving using willow which was made widely in somerset. hoe this helps

Hello Maureen
Your William Withey was he married to Elizabeth Notley and son of John Withey & Susanna Edwards who were married St. Andrew's Holborn 4 Nov 1759? John Withey was my gggg.grandfather. I expect you have a lot more information now since your posting nearly 18 months ago. I have not done any major research on my Withey line for some time now but earlier I did view the Colchester Parish Records.
Regards, Rosemary Clarke-Barkes (nee Withey)
