Sophie D. Witkowski, age 89, of Ball Pavilion died Friday, January 2, 2009 at her residence. Born in Erie on January 25, 1919 she was the daughter of John and Mary Ann Kuzniewski Gorniak. Sophie was a homemaker and was a member of St. George Church for over 50 years; she loved gardening, flowers, crafts, In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry J. Witkowski in 1991; a daughter, Nancy E. Fritsky, a sister, Josephine Rhines and five brothers, Leo, Michael, Benjamin, John and Joseph Gorniak. She is survived by two sons, William C. Witkowski and his wife Jean, of North East and James J. Witkowski and his wife Nancy, of Erie, three sisters, Helen Beck, Bertha Schultz, and Ginger Mashyna, a brother, Walter Gorniak, also of Erie and a son-in-law, Stephen J. Fritsky, of Hamilton Square, N.J. She is further survived by ten grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Burton Wintergreen Funeral Home 2532 Norcross Road on Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited there for a Prayer service Tuesday at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. George Church 5145 Peach Street on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
