Ernst A Witte and Mary Laube Witte

These people were my husband's grandparents, and my husband's name is also Ernst. Our family has little to no record of Mary Laube's family or her family tree prior to her marriage to Ernst, or EA as most called him. She came out from the midwest or east somewhere and settled with her Uncle in Genessee Idaho prior to marrying Mr. Witte. EA passed away in 1942 and Mary in 1954 I believe. If there is anyone out there that may know more about this family history, I would be eager to connect with you.

Re: Henkenius Family Tree

I read your post about the Henkenius family in Iowa. I have been doing some research myself and my great grandfather settled at Dyersville, Iowa in 1882 then moved to Arcadia, Iowa. His name is Albert Henkenius, son of Gottfried and Elizabeth Henkenius. He was born in Paderborn, Westphalia, Germany in Oct. 10, 1872. Your post is from 2000 but would hope that you still get this. Any info you could give me would be AWESOME!!! What is this book you refer to?

Thank you,
Christina Lund

Glad to hear from you again, GenBugGranny,
But now I am totally confused about a few Texas places. I thought Greenville was up along the Red River---about 100 miles NE of Dallas. Gatesville is in Coryell County---about 150 miles south of Dallas. And Hunt is in Kerr County, just 10 miles west of where I live in Kerrville. There might have been an earlier Hunt in another area of the State (It IS a VERY BIG State!)
Our ancestors came from Minden, a small village in Prussia (I think it would be about 100 miles, slightly NE of Berlin.) The name Conrad Witte does appear in some of the records. I really wish we could get Ardis in on some of this conversation---because she has done lots of research on the family and knows so much more than I do.
Good hunting on your ancestors. We have a "brick wall" in that we can't identify the name of the ship on which John Adolph witte came to this country into New Orleans. What was the name of your ancestor's ship?

Hi Liz,
Greenville and Gatesville are just a few miles apart. The counties being side by side. A LOT of my relatives who lived in Greenville actually died in Gatesville and some were buried there. Just keep Greenville in mind while searching. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
In the 1860 Census for Greenville, Hunt TX you will find Conrad Witte. Check it out they lived in the Timber Creek District and had a brother named William. They all showed to be from Prussia and were wagoneers.(Made wagons)Conrad was 31, Sophia 26 and William was 21.
My Holtman relatives were living with them.
Happy Hunting from GenBugGranny

Arthur Hofelmann (later dropped the last N) was my grandfather. I knew Ruth quite well, and met Lillian a time or two, but did not know Alice. I believe she died quite young. Arthur died on Thanksgiving Day Nov. 29, 1908. He was married to Lillian Johnson and she died April 12, 1983. They farmed in Pipestone County, Minnesota.

Hello, I have a little information on Conrad & Sohpia Witte. In 1859, when my ancestors, Henry, Caroline and little Henry came to America, they lived with Conrad and Sophia Witte in Greenville, Hunt County, Texas. They are all listed in the 1860 census for Greenville Hunt County, TX. In 1870 They were not living with the Witte family but they all still lived in Greenville. I was told that they later moved to Lubbock, Lubbock County TX. There are some Witte's living in Lubbock on later census. Do you have any information on the Holtman's? Maybe some pictures as all of the earlier pictures of Henry & Caroline were distroyed or just cannot be found. ANY INFORMATION would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you and Happy Hunting!

Hello Green Granny (Sorry I didn't get all of your name)!!!
It seems that our ancestor--John Adolph Witte probably came to the New World through the port of New Orleans, and wound up at Perry, Tx in McClendon County. I have never heard of any of the relatives being in Greenville or the Lubbock area.
I noticed on the list of names of people who had responded to this thread earlier---there was Ardis, who is my second cousin, and also Tom Rainer who comes from a family with a similar history at Perry, TX. When his family moved to the next county to the west---to Gatesville in Coryell County---they changed the spelling of their name to Wittie.
The Witties hold a reunion in March of each year---in Gatesville, TX and Tom Rainer is in charge. Ardis and I visited their reunion a couple of years ago---but we could not find absolute proof that we are kin. I think we need to do a DNA test soon.
Sorry I could not be of any more help. LIZ

This is really odd. As far as I know the only Witte in my family line is Regina Witte wife of Georg Gerth m abt 1820. Regina and Georg died bet 1851 and 1854. They came thru New Orleans on their way to Kansas to live with their son, Valentin Gerth. Valentin was born 3 Mar 1830 in Schmoellen, Saxony. The only brother that I know of for Valentin was Georg. He came to America later and was "lost" during the Civil War.
Now the odd part. One of Valentin's friends in American - Kansas was Franz Meier. What follows is a letter by another German - Stranz. If you are intersted in the whole letter I will email it and other letters as well.
Becky Drew
gedrew@theriver.com

Halifax Station on 6 September 1885
Bismarck, P.O.
Waubonsse County
Dear Friend Valentin
... January 31, 1885 I returned to my farm here where Franz Maier and my sister lived. But now Franz Maier has left my sister and lives with his son-in-law on the farm and my sister lives on her own land with her children. Franz Maier managed badly on my farm, you know him and what a farmer he is...
I have leased my farm to Maiers boys, one is already 22 years old, the other one is 19, otherwise if Maier didn’t have the boys, not much would have been done to my farm.
I still have an old block house. I live comfortably in it. I received no mail from Germany since the death of my brother Johannes. His son Bernhard was here too, visiting Maier, but my sister told me he didn’t amount to much and then the county collected money and sent him back to Germany, but he didn’t arrive there and since that time we have not heard from him, and what happened to him nobody knows.
Now, dear Valentin, if your means will allow you to visit me and my family and my sister and Maier, it would please us all very much and we could speak to each other... My sister and Maier say hello and you should come. They all want to talk to you personally. I and my family are healthy and lively and we hope you are too.
We all greet you heartily
Your loyal friend H. Melchior Stranz
My name is Mary Witte Crawford. I know I have Witte relatives in Texas. My grandfather was Otto Witte, his father was Albert Witte (1850-1921. I know he had a brother named Walter. They may have been Bavarian.

Witte in Maryland 1890's

I've hit a brick wall. Looking to verify that Caroline Witte b. c 1870 (of Frederick Witte Baltimore) married Wilhelm (William) Wahl. They had a child b. 1893, apparently a second child. They later divorced. Since the 1890 census is the missing one, I am stuck. Any Witte descendants out there have ideas??
