Herman Wittenberg Biography 1903 Portland Oregon FYI

I inherited the following book which has a Biography of Herman Wittenberg, son of David and Caroline (Blass) Wittenberg, natives of Germany who married in Detroit, Michigan. Herman was born at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, September 15, 1859. He married Mary Alice Shaver in 1880.

There is also a picture of him in the book. I will try to download the picture and the biography. I will have to do it in parts because the article is quite long.I will reply to this message and continue the attachments. This message contains three out of 6 attachments.

Portrait and Biographical Record of Portland and Vicinity, Oregon : containing original sketches of many well known citizens of the past and present.
Chicago: Chapman Pub. Co., 1903, 890 pgs.

I am not a relative. I downloaded an obituary of Herman's father and I thought I would also include this biography for family members researching the family.
Eellitta
russetred@msn.com

My Wittenberg Ancestors were German Mennonites who had settled in Russia before coming to America. I have hundreds of names I have yet to go through, still working on it as we speak, but they settled in California, Washington, Canada, & I think a few are listed in Kansas & some other midwestern states. Like I said, I'm still going through the records. They are also intertwined with the Friesens of the same areas in America.

The Wittenbergs I have are 5 brothers and 1 sister.
The Father was Israel Moshe Vittenborgo. Some of the
children changed their names: i.e. Whitten; Witton, and etc.
Daughter, Lillian, married Geo. Sobel. I believe that they came to the US about 1885. I do know that Lillian was born about 1896 and died about 1965 in Ohio.
If any of this is up your tree, feel free to e-mail me.
Hi Debbie,
I'm trying to find out when my Wittenberg family came to the USA. My Great Grndfthr's name was William Wittenberg - he was born abt. 1810. His wife's 1st name was Caroline. I believe they came to the US. They had 7 children -my Grndfthr was Wm. Henry Wittenberg DOB 1852. He married Elizabeth Schaeffer on 12/5/1885 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Elizabeth's grandfather, Charles Schaeffer, b abt 1782, was a Professor at Bonn University/Germany. I'm looking for information on my Wittenbergs and also about Charles Schaeffer. Would appreciate any information. Thanks.

I don't know what I was thinking last Sept. when I responded. My gggrandfather David came to America with his father and brothers. I don't have my book in front of me so I can only give you a ruff time frame. David came to Oregon in 1862 with his wife Caroline. His brother Moritz and two daughters of Moritz joined him here later. They were settled in Portland. David's oldest son, Herman was the founder of P)acific Coast Biscuit Co. and became a very wealthy man. Many of his children and there children worked for this company. I believe one of Moritz' daughters was Rosa, but will have to check/

Hi Cathy, sorry to take so long to reply. I don't recognize the names of David and Idabelle, but that doesn't mean there is no connection. My grgrgrandfather was also David Wittenberg married to Caroline Blass in WI in 1857. They moved to Kansas and later to Oregon. David came to America with his father and five brothers. Any of those brothers could prove to ba link between your David and mine. Can you go back any further then David and Idabelle?

I read your reply to the Wittenberg in Austrailia. I don't have relatives (that I know of) there, but your Gottfried Wittenberg interests me in that he lived & died in Warzlyn, W. Prussia. My ancestors came from that town & one of their descendents was also named Gottfried (not the same one though) but same names are used for generations in a family.
Please contact me as I'm pretty sure we have a connection
Thanks.
I know this may be a longshot, but I have an ancestor by the name of Gottfried Wittenberg born in 1760 in West Prussia and died 15 March 1820 in Warzlen, West Prussia (formerly in the German empire, now part of Northern Poland). He could be a common ancestor. His daughter, Charlotta Wittenberg born 15 October 1797 in Warzlen, West Prussia, died 13 March 1830 in Gotts Gabe, Reisenberg, West Prussia, married my 5th great-grandfather, Martin Karkau 3rd, who was born in Wilkau, West Prussia on 25 January 1800, died unknown. We could be very very distant cousins, who knows?

Just a tidbit of information, feel free to contact me.
Benjamin Godfrey
Denver, Colorado

Hello Debbie,

I am interested in learning more about my Grandmother's father whose name was either Ernst Jacob Wittenberg or Jacob Ernst Wittenberg. (He died while my grandmother was still young and she can't quite remember the exact order of his name). In any case, we believe that he may have been born on or near 1865 and probably arrived in the U.S. around 1893. I understand he was also involved with the Spanish American war after his arrival. If anyone has any information on this person, it would be greatly appreciated.
