Hi - I was wondering if anyone knew what happened to this man anytime after the death of his first wife Winifred Edwards (not sure if he re-married) as he lost contact with his son (my partners great grandfather) after his new parter and I would be very interested to find out whether he remarried his partner and whether he is alive and if he had any more children. Anything really
Thanks :)

Hi, I am related in the Witter side. I have really nothing on William and Caroline. His father and mother are William N. born abt 1808 in NC and his wife Barbara Fritz born abt 1804 in Wurtemburg. That is as far back as I can get with the Witters, it's been very frustrating. Where do you live and which side are you on?

Thanks for your comments and advice. I know Isaac Witter is my ancestor, but have no specific knowledge of how he got to Orange County, NY where he seems to be among the earliest Witters to show up there. I'd also be interested to know why he was so ill at that time, and why his extreme lameness restricted his Revolutionary War activity to cooking for his militia! My, my, my, how addictive is genealogy...Funny though, according to a book of family history, his daughter, Anna, (yes, Anna, maybe after Anna Morgan Witter!) who married Joseph Beakes, was noted for her singing voice, and I sing with a professional level choral group. What fun!

I did some searching and found the passage you're referring to. Truthfully, I'm not sure what to make of this story... it certainly conflicts with other sources of information on Ezra and Anna! The story seems too detailed to be just a tall tale, and the fact that the surviving child's "uncle Joseph" is mentioned (Ezra's brother) seems to lend some credibility.

The various Witter genealogies indicate that Ezra's wife actually died eight days after he did, both of them perishing of "the long fever." This was probably referring to typhoid, which could cause delirium in its later stages (perhaps the cause of Ezra's behavior?).

I haven't researched this line very deeply...I'm descended from Ezra's younger brother, Ebenezer. Perhaps a search of the Preston burial records (I'd start at FindAGrave.com) to see if there might be a record of the children buried with their parents. If you can at least find Ezra and Anna's burial records, you might be able to confirm the dates of death. Obviously, if he proceded her in death as the Witter records indicate, the murder story cannot be true. If the story is true, the three children should be buried with their parents.

Otherwise, assuming that you feel confident about the research you've done on Isaac, I might just record this account in your database and mark it as a mystery still waiting to be solved.

Hope that helps a little!

Karyn

I'm descended from the Witters too, via Isaac, son of Ezra, who moved from CT to Orange County New York. While I found direct lines in Harold Witter's book, and another genealogy of CT book, (William, Josiah, Ebenezer, Joseph, Ezra, Isaac), but then in HISTORY OF STONINGTON (CT) on p. 689, I found a horrifying story of domestic terror and murder involving Ezra Witter and his wife, Anna Morgan Witter, in which Ezra while in a "state of mental aberration," killed Anna and his three oldest children. If, indeed, that happened, I CAN"T be descended from Isaac, since he was the third child, or the other books that say Ezra and Anna died of "the long fever" are wrong. The dates are the same in the three versions, but since all of the Witters had many children, and tended to use the same names over and over, it could be a genealogical mix up. Has anyone else searching the Connecticut Witters run into this tale of woe?

The Witter Grocery (Hinsdale, NY)

Plans were announced in January 1911 that brothers Jay Ansley Witter and Ora Floyd Witter planned to open a grocery in the building formerly owned by Mr. N. M. Marsh.(1) The grand opening was held Saturday, January 28, 1911. The new store was up-to-date and boasted an attractive meat market, as well as an outdoor light that was "a great benefit to the town" according to the Hinsdale newspaper column. Jay passed out pink carnations and cigars to visitors of the store. However, that same night, he and his brother Ora took the Erie train departing for New York City. Their brother-in-law, John DeBaum, had passed away, leaving their sister Myrtle a widow. (2)

He returned home on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 1911, and fell ill with quinsy and tonsillitis. (3) A week following the report of his travels to New York City, he was said to be "much improved" after being sick at home all week.(4) By the next day, however, black diphtheria had racked the Hinsdale community, shutting down schools and cancelling social gatherings of every description. Jay was found by Dr. Loughlin of Olean to have an unfortunately bad case of it, and his other sister Ruby had taken ill with it as well. In a late insertion to the news, the columnist sadly writes, "No hope is entertained for Mr. Witter at this hour." (5)

The next day, at 2:30 a.m. on February 8, 1911, Jay Witter passed away in his home. Besides his brother and two sisters, he left his wife, three children with a fourth on the way, his mother, and many friends. (3)

Only three days later, the local news spoke optimistically of the epidemic's containment due to strict quarantine efforts, noting that the schools were closed, church services were cancelled, and the Witter store was closed. (6) No more mention of the Witter grocery is found until March 20, 1911, when a small item ran stating that Ora Witter had sold the inventory off to Mr. Brown and Mr. Hogue of Maplehurst, and referring to the previous name, noting "the Marsh store will be closed again."
Ora Floyd Witter (1870-1931)

Born Sept 8, 1870 to Rufus D. Witter and Anna Elizabeth Keller Rude. (Source: The Kellers of Hamilton Township: A Study in Democracy. By David Henry Keller, M.D., 1922. Page 84.)

Married Anna Belle Dyer Norton on Dec 24, 1890 in Hinsdale NY. (Source: The Olean Democrat. "Happily Wedded: A Former Olean School Ma'am Who Has Taken a Pupil for Life." Jan 8, 1891.) Belle died April 27, 1918 in Olean NY and was buried at the Hinsdale Cemetery. (Source: The Olean Evening Herald. "Hinsdale Woman Died In Olean This Morning." April 27, 1918. Page 1.)

Married Nellie Stockings on Feb 21, 1919 in Buffalo NY. (Source: The Olean Evening Herald. "Hinsdale." Feb 22, 1919. Page 6. & The Olean Evening Herald. "Hinsdale." Feb 25, 1919. Page 4.) Nellie died in June 1923 and was buried at the Hinsdale Cemetery. (Source: The Olean Evening Herald. "Former Hinsdale Resident Is Dead." June 30, 1923. Page 5.)

Married Marie J. Kuesthardt about 1928 (1930 Federal Census. Database online. Buffalo, Erie, New York, ED 25, roll 1423, image 46.0.) Can anyone supply a more precise date and source?

Died Nov 6, 1931 in Sarah, Union County, Georgia. (Source: The Olean Herald. "Ora Witter, Former Hinsdale Resident, Is Dead in Georgia." Nov 7, 1931. Page 3.) Cause of death was listed as angina pectoris. (Source: Vital Statistics Index, Book A, Union County. Union County Courthouse, 114 Courthouse Street, Blairsville, GA. Note: The loose papers in the front of the index lists "Witter, Ora Floyd, Male, age 61, died 11/6/1931" and the index itself lists "Witter, Ora Floyd Mrs., Female, died 11/6/1931." I am guessing that since Ora is a unisex name, the person who recorded it in the index was confused and listed "Mrs." and "female" incorrectly, since the obit shows that Ora's widow survived him.) He was buried at the Hinsdale Cemetery. (Source: The Olean Evening Times. "Ora F. Witter Funeral Is Held." Nov 13, 1931. Page 12.)

Does anyone have pictures of Ora Witter or members of his family that they would be willing to share digitally? I have taken pictures of the headstones of Ora, Belle, and Nellie Witter at Hinsdale Cemetery. I would be glad to email them on request.

Good hunting!
Brandy

Looking for complete dates for Alice L. Witter, the daughter of Alfred and Lucretia Witter. The Witter family is located in Fayette Co, Penn. in the Dunbar twp. area in the 1850 - 1880 census. Prior to that they must have been in Ohio. Alice L. Witter was born in Ohio about 1837. She married John Kent Rizer (he from Allegany co, Maryland) about 1859, prob in Penn since I didn't find the marriage recorded in Maryland.

Alice had to have died before Apr 1868 when John Kent Rizer remarried. Having done much Pennsylvania research especially in Fayette co., there will probably be no official record of the marriage or death of Alice Witter Rizer, but maybe a tombstone record? The family was probably Lutheran. Thank you Kathleen Rizer

Hello:

Thanks for the reply.

In this case, we have found Lovica as the given name engraved in their memorial stone. Her name only appears there as Lovica W. Elsewhere, Ezra's wife is listed as Louisa W.
Harold John Witter has published a full genealogy of The descendants of Wm Witter and Hannah Churchman. He has a full half page on Elizabeth Witter(b. 1/20,1738-9) and Benjamin Brewster(4/15/1736). They had 12 children between 1760 and 1783: Susanna 2/25/1760, Ebenezer 8/17/1762, Walter 6/29/1764,Elizabeth 6/19/1766, Jacob 11/1/1768, Mary 2/20/1771, Bethiah 1/12/1773, Abel 2/6/1775, Benjamin 3/7/1777, Elizabeth 4/5/1779(the 1st Elizabeth died 1/17/1769 at 2 years of age.),Jabez 12/23/1780, Mary 6/23/1783.

You may contact Harold J. Witter at PO Box 371, Skaneateles, NY 13152. I don't know if any more copies of this book are available, but he covers the time period of 1584, when Wm Witter came to america, up until 1990, when the book was published.

Suzannah

I have information on my direct line how I descend from William Witter and Hannah Churchman.

I posted the 4th generation about Ebenezer Witter & his wife Elizabeth Brown
in case anyone doesn't have access to the book.
WITTER GENEALOGY
Des. of William Witter of Swampscott, MA, 1639 - 1659
Compiled by Georgia Cooper Wasburn from Witter Family Records and Data Gathered, and Edited by Mabel Thatcher Rosemary Washburn.
The National Historical Company, 175 Fifth Ave., NY
Copyright, 1929.

A copy of the above book is located at the LDS Library in Salt Lake City.

On March 26, 1729, aged twenty-eight, he married ELIZABETH daughter of JOHN and ELIZABETH BROWN of Preston. She was born in 1708 and was aged twenty at the time of her marriage. After her death EBENEZER WITTER went to Canterbury,

Page 30.

Conneticut, where he resided with his son, ASA WITTER. He married, second, in 1760, the widow AVERY. His children were by his first wife. His son, ASA, writes of his parents: "EBENEZER (1699) and his wife, ELIZABETH BROWN, were eminent for their piety and for training of their household in the fear of God. They were good singers. Their children always went to the Preparatory Lecture to be catechised int he Assembly's Divine Catechism, and it was where many of the children took their first lessons in Theology."

EBENEZER WITTER died September 29, 1789, in Canterbury, and was buried in the old cemetery at Hanover (Sprague), Conneticut, where, in 1929, his gravestone is still standing.
Thanks for the reply.

I show Elizabeth Witter b. January 20, 1739, as the 7th child of Ebenezer Witter and Elizabeth Brown not their oldest child. My source is from WITTER GENEALOGY
Des. of William Witter of Swampscott, MA, 1639 - 1659
Compiled by Georgia Cooper Wasburn. She lists Elizabeth as the 7th child. I'll post the information on Ebenezer Witter (4th generation) & Elizabeth Brown in a new thread rather than post it here.

Karyn,

Thanks for uploading the pictures of the two tombstones for Dorothy. I had a picture of Oliver Crary's tombstone but yours is clearer. I can read his age of 75 years and Esq. on your picture which I wasn't sure about from the pictures taken by cousin Sue Kendall Geer Downes took the fall of 2006.

I'm will post Amos Witter's (son of Ebenezer Witter & Abigail Geer) information and also what I have on his wife Lucy née Crary's death. Amos Witter son of Ebenezer Witter b. 1732 d. 1817 and Abigail Geer.

Are you a member of the DAR? I proved Ebenezer Witter as my Rev. War ancestor to join the DAR. I still need to do supplemental's for Oliver Crary father of Lucy Crary and Robert Geer father of Abigail Geer. They are of course your ancestors also.

Nancy
Karyn,

I don't have information on the Brewster's since they are not part of my direct line.

DOROTHY MORGAN b.25 Feb 1675/76, 1st wife of EBENEZER WITTER b. 25 Mar 1668, married 2nd DANIEL BREWSTER.
I wonder if Daniel Brewster, 2nd husband of Dorothy Morgan Witter Brewster, married more before he married Dorothy after 1711, if that's the case, it could be Benjamin Brewster who married Elizabeth Witter and Daniel Brewster who married Daniel Witter were sons of Daniel Brewster.

Did you notice the source for the documentation for Elizabeth Witter & Benjamin Brewster,
Reference: Brewster Genealogy, Vol. 1, by Emma Jones (1908)?

Why don't you post a query to the Brewster Messageboard on Rootsweb and also on Genforum about Benjamin and Daniel Brewster. Someone on one of these two websites might have a copy of Volume 1 of the Brewster Genealogy.

It is my understanding the Brewster's are well documented since they are descendants of the Mayflower.

Let me know what you find out the parentage of Daniel & Benjamin Brewster.

Good luck.
Nancy

Karyn,
Elizabeth Witter married Benjamin Brewster May 24, 1759 in Preston, New London county, Ct. Benjamin Brewster was the son of Ebenezer Brewster (born 1713) and Susanna Smith (born 1715). All the information I have indicates that Ebenezer and Susanna only had 2 children. Benjamin (b.
Karyn,
Elizabeth Witter married Benjamin Brewster May 24, 1759 in Preston, New London county, Ct. Benjamin Brewster was the son of Ebenezer Brewster (born 1713) and Susanna Smith (born 1715). All the information I have indicates that Ebenezer and Susanna only had 2 children. Benjamin (b. April 15, 1736) and Ebenezer (b. April 25, 1740).

I have quite a lot of information on the Witters and the Brewsters.
Elizabeth Witter was the daughter of Ebenezer witter and Elizabeth Brown. She was the oldest of 11 children. She was born in Preston, New London County Ct. She married Benjamin Brewster in Preston on May 24, 1759. She and Benjamin had 10 children. I am descended from their fifth child, Jacob Brewster. I am also directly descended from Elizabeth's younger sister, Esther. Esther married Hezikiah Douglas and had two children. Elizabeth's son, Jacob Brewster, married his first cousin(Esther's daughter), Elizabeth Douglas.

Elizabeth Witter's father, Ebenezer Witter, married Elizabeth Brown March 26, 1729. She died August 27, 1759.
Ebenezer Witter married Mary Avery from Groton November 6, 1760. Both Elizabeth Witter and Mary Avery Witter are buried in the Avery Cemetery at Preston. Ebenezer died in 1789 and is buried in the old Hanover Cemetery in Sprague, Ct.
Captain Daniel Brewster/Dorothy Morgan Witter marriage - 1727, Connecticut. I don't think it happened!

Harold John Witter's 1991 "Descendants of William Witter and Hannah Churchman of Lynn, Massachusetts" indicates that Dorothy Morgan (b. 1675, Preston, New London Co., CT; d. 1759, Preston, New London Co., CT; daughter of Joseph Morgan and Dorothy Parke), widow of Deacon Ebenezer Witter, remarried to Captain Daniel Brewster (b. 1667, New London Co., CT; d. 1735, Preston, New London Co., CT; son of Benjamin Brewster and Ann Darte).

William Richard Cutter makes the same claim in his work, "Genealogical and Family History of the State of Connecticut: A Record of the Achievements of Her People in the Making of a Commonwealth and the Building of a Nation." Cutter states:

"(IV) Captain Daniel Brewster , son of Benjamin Brewster , was born at New London, Connecticut , March 1, 1666-67 , died at Preston, Connecticut , May 7, 1735 . He settled at Preston . He was a justice of the peace for New London county , 1717-20-23-25-28 ; representative to the general assembly of Connecticut , 1704-19-21-23-25-31 ; lieutenant of the militia company of Preston in 1704 and captain in 1716 ; deacon of the First Church of Preston , He married (first) December 23, 1686 , Hannah , born February, 1666 , died September 25, 1727 , daughter of John and Elizabeth Gager . He married (second) December 19, 1727 , Dorothy Witter , probably a daughter of Lieutenant Joseph and Dorothy (Parke) Morgan and widow of Ebenezer Witter , all of Preston . Children of first wife: Daniel , born October 11, 1687 ; Hannah , December 2, 1690 ; Mary , January 2, 1692 ; John , mentioned below: Ruth , June 20, 1700 ; Joshua , November 18, 1701 ; Bethia , April 5, 1703 ; Jonathan , January 6, 1705 ; Jerusha , October 15, 1710 ; Ebenezer , September 19, 1713."

I believe that other records, particularly the burial record for Daniel Brewster's wife, Dorothy Witter Brewster (at Brewster's Neck Cemetery in Preston), casts doubt upon this marriage. The dates given in this burial record correspond with the birth and death dates of Ebenezer Witter and Dorothy Morgan's daughter, Dorothy Witter (b. 1702, Preston; d. 1779, Preston).

Furthermore, Dorothy Morgan's gravestone (at Avery Cemetery, Ledyard Center) makes no mention of this second marriage. It reads:

"In memory of
Mrs. Dorothy
the wife of Decn
Ebenezer WITTER
she died March
ye 9th 1759 in ye
84th year of her
age"

The Brewster/Witter marriage record (dated 19 Dec 1727, four months after the death of Daniel's first wife, Hannah Gager) lists the bride only as "Dorothy Witter." She is not listed as "Dorothy Morgan Witter," or "Dorothy, widow of Ebenezer Witter," which would have been common ways to record the marriage of a widow.

In favor of the Morgan-Brewster marriage, the Daniel Brewster commonly attributed to this marriage by these and other researchers was born in 1667, which would have made him a rather old husband for Ebenezer and Dorothy's daughter (b. 1702). However, such "May-December" marriages were not uncommon at this time. Some researchers have mistakenly attributed as many as seven children to this marriage, which would have been impossible considering Dorothy Morgan's age. Born in 1675, she would have been 52 years old at the time of this marriage, well beyond the age of child-bearing. All of the children I have found for Daniel Brewster, including those found in the sources above, predate the death of his first wife. I have found none born after 1727. Perhaps the lack of children contributed to the conclusion that it was the elderly (at that time, 52 was elderly) Dorothy Morgan who married Daniel. Certainly, children would have been expected from a younger married woman. However, there are other possible explanations for the lack of children; infertility (most likely), or a conscious choice by the couple (less likely in a community of Puritans).

In my opinion, the 19 Dec 1727 marriage as recorded by Barbour occurred between Captain Daniel Brewster and Dorothy Witter (b. 1702; d. 1779), NOT her mother, Dorothy Morgan Witter (b. 1675; d. 1759).

If anyone has other info or ideas, please let me know.

Karyn

Thanks so much for the quick reply, and for the additional sources. I really appreciate the help.

I was not aware of a second marriage for Dorothy Morgan Witter [Ebenezer's widow]. She did outlive him by quite a few years, but her epitaph lists her only as Eb. Witter's widow:

"In memory of
Mrs. Dorothy
the wife of Decn
Ebenezer WITTER
she died March
ye 9th 1759 in ye
84th year of her
age"

Barbour lists both the birth of Ebenezer and Dorothy Witter's daughter, Dorothy, and the marriage between Dorothy Witter and Daniel Brewster. The collection also lists Daniel's date of death:

"Dorothy [Witter], d. [Ebenezer & Dorothy], b. Dec 11, 1702."

"Dorothy [Witter], m. Daniel BREWSTER, Dec 19, 1727."

"Daniel [Brewster], m. Dorothy WITTER, Dec. 19, 1727; d. May 7, 1735.

Daughter Dorothy is buried in Brewster's Neck Cemetery in Preston. The registry lists her as Dorothy Witter Brewster, b. Dec. 11, 1702; d. Apr. 30, 1779. I would imagine that Daniel is also buried there, but I haven't found a record for him yet.

I'll check with the Brewster message board, as you recommended.

Thanks again for the helpful info!

Karyn

Hi again,

Always nice to meet another distant cousin!

My Crary/Witter lineage carries down from:

Erastus W. Crary m. Rebecca C. Dunwell
...Erastus grandson of Oliver Crary & Hopestill York
Stephen Christopher Crary m. Susan Eliza Randall
Lillian Crary m. James Herbert Keith [nee Keefe]
James Wilson Keith m. Nellie Florine Holroyd
Dorothy Keith m. Victor Voitto Van Kainen [nee Viinikainen] (my grandparents)

I've done a great deal of work on the Crary, York and Dunwell families, and only recently began focusing more time on the Witter's. I've amassed quite a bit of info on Oliver and Hopestill's two sons, Joseph (whose line settled in Maine) and my Christopher (who settled in Ohio). But I hadn't found a marriage record for Lucy that I was sure was Joseph and Christopher's sister, and I'm glad to have finally solved that mystery!

I'm attaching some photos to this message:

1. Dorothy Morgan Witter (wife of Ebenezer), Avery Cemetery (Ledyard Center). There are two photos, the headstone (you can just make out some of the inscription you quoted), and the footstone (which simply says "Mrs Dorothy Witter.").

2. Since you're a descendant of Oliver Crary, I thought you might like a photo of his tombstone also. This stone is also in Avery Cemetery in Ledyard, and reads "In memory of Oliver Crary Esq. who died 26 Aug 1806, aged 75 years."

The Dorothy Witter Brewster that is buried in Brewster's Neck Cemetery (in Preston) is, I'm pretty convinced, Ebenezer Witter and Dorothy Morgan's daughter, Dorothy. The Brewster's Neck Dorothy's birthdate (transcribed from the burial records) matches the birthdate given by Barbour for a daughter, Dorothy, born to Ebenezer and Dorothy (Morgan). I believe that this is the Dorothy Witter who married Daniel Brewster (not her mother, Dorothy Morgan Witter). What I don't know is if the Daniel Brewster of this marriage is the same Daniel Brewster born 1667 in Roxbury, MA that many other family historians are listing as the one who married Dorothy Witter. It seems clear to me that Ebenezer and Dorothy's daughter, Dorothy, did marry a Brewster (she is buried under the name Dorothy Witter Brewster), but as I said in my other post this Daniel Brewster was rather old for her! I'll need to do some more hunting and see if I can find another Daniel Brewster who might be closer in age to daughter Dorothy, and see if I can connect the dots.

Let me know if you have any trouble with the photos. I've never uploaded one to a message board this way before, so hopefully you'll be able to view them okay.

Cuz Karyn

We are looking for credible information regarding William Witter's ancestry in England. The earliest references we find are that "WILLIAM WITTER, the first American ancestor of the Witter family of the United States and Canada, was born in England about the year 1584,...". That came from the Witter Genealogy by Washburn (pgs. 13-15)

Please let us know if you have found any earlier ancestor information and the source.
