Also, Mary Ann Irvin is buried beside James H. Wofford in the Bogart Baptist Church cemetery along with Andrew Tandy Wofford's children, Lettie and Alvin.

My father was the youngest child, James Pittman Wofford, of Orman Benton Wofford and Maude Strange Bishop, born 1925 in Atlanta, Ga. I remember "Grandma Sawyer" who passed away when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I have not researched the family before and do not know a great deal about the Arkansas connection. I know my grandfather had relative in Arkansas.

I'm responding to your reply regarding my inquiry about James Wofford (1783-1849) & Catherine Klutts (1787-?). You mentioned that I forgot to provide my E-mail address, so before I forget again here it is: jmanc@netzero.net.

The thoroughness of your documentation is facinating! As I mentioned previously, I believe I'm a descendant of James Wofford & Catherine Klutts based upon Absalom Wofford (1820-1904) being one of their sons.

Furthermore, Absalom & Cynthia A. Wafford's daughter, Nellie Eliza Wafford Johnson, was my maternal great grandmother. However, I'm not absolutely sure if Cynthia A. was Nellie's mother. It's possible that her mother may have been one of Absalom's former wives as you suggest.

Well, it looks as though we're distant cousins based upon this Wofford lineage. If you ever wish to talk about our Wofford ancestry, my phone number in Cincinnati, Ohio is (513)-752-4668. Or, if you wish, I can call you from my mother's house using her unlimited long-distance if you provide your phone number. I'm aware of some other interesting Wofford tidbits such as the Woffords & the Johnsons making guns & harnesses for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Your reply is dated 4 years ago but I was wondering if you are still interested in the history of the Wofford family. My great-grandmother was Texas Woffard, daughter of William Woffard. Her son, James Alton Dixon was my grandfather. I was doing some research and trying to see if my family has indian ties and it appears that Capt. John Woffard applied for membership to the Cherokee reservation in 1896? This would have been a year after he died. I couldn't find any children of Capt Woffard's that are also named John.

I have read the post. Thomas Jefferson Wofford did not live till 1930 that is something spread thru the internet from a book published in 1963. Our Thomas Jefferson Wofford who married Virginia Ann Dillard was dead before Feb 1864 a casualty of the Civil War. This record is found in Civil War records and in the indigent files of Sevier county Arkansas.These records were available on the arkansas genweb site seveier county. I am not sure they are still there. In your next post you have listed some people who are still living. Although they may be hard for some to know that it is better to post living female or male in posts.

wondering which wofford line you decend from.?
When Raymond Wayne Wofford died on July 30, 2004 age 81 his obit listed his brother Billy Joe as still living so the one you have in Oklahoma is not the correct one. B J lives in California I believe. Wayne lived there for a long time also and moved back to Lousianna before he died. Sam B.his brother preceded him in death in 1977 I think. Sister Dorothy married ? Lewis.Henderson Wofford died in Eureka, San Mateo, California not in Texas. He died of heart problems. Was on a visit to see family at the time.

Lucy Fern Baum Wofford wife of William Roy died in Silsbee, Texas and is buried in Eagletown, Oklahoma. Her oldest Daughter Lavina died at the age of 8 days and is buried in Cerrogordo Cemetery, Little River, Arkansas R.J. Wofford is buried in New Mexico as is his brother H. A. Wofford. Van Allen Wofford died in Washington in 1999 cremated and ashes scattered. has no decendants Louie Olen Wofford died in France during WW 2 and is buried there.Has no decendants William Roy JR. in your post is William Ray Wofford he died in Idaho L.Fern Wofford died in Idaho Julie Ann Wofford died in Texas

THE CONFUSION ON NATHANIEL IS THE INFO IS MIXED ON TWO DIFFERENT NATHANIELS AND APPEARS NOT TO BE SEPERATED INTO THE CORRECT INFO. THIS IS NOT THE ONLY TWO MIXED. THERE WAS TWO NATHANIELS BORN TO BROTHERS ALMOST AT THE SAME TIME AND ARE REALLY CONFUSED. I HAVE TAKEN MY RESEARCH AND PUT IT IN MY VERSION OF THE WOFFORD FAMILY. Nathaniel Wofford, b. 1766 and Lydia Hopper only had 8 children: William Benton; Charles; Sarah "Sallie"; James "Jimmie" W.; Charlotte "Lottie"; John William; Thomas "Tommie" J.; and Martha "Patsy" Wofford.

For years people said my Comfort Snow (Pruitt) was the concubine of this Nathaniel Wofford. And had 12 children by him. Not true, Comfort Snow Pruitt was married to Nathaniel Wofford b. 1770, they never left Spartanburg, both died there. They did have 12 possibly 13 children. Comfort named a dtr. Sarah Pruitt in her will, either she was a child from the first marriage, or she married a Pruitt. At this time I don't know which, but am lending to the latter, as she was born about 1797 and Comfort and Nathaniel were married by this time and had several children. Comfort has also been reported as being full blood Cherokee. This is also false. She may have been part Cherokee but was not full blood. She was also reported as being born in NC., she was born in SC as far as I know she was never in NC.

After this some people changed the name to Snow Comfort and still claimed she was Nathaniel Wofford b. 1766 concubine. I have never seen one iota of proof of this. When asked to see the "legal" proof, not just what someone dreamed up, I get no response.

I'm still not convinced that Nathaniel Wofford b. 1766 was a soldier and a lowly private at that on the "Trail of Tears." He would have been a mid 70's yr. old man at the time. With the military experience he had why in heaven's name would he be a private?

His son, Charles was a teamster on the trail, he was also married to Agnes Petit who was Cherokee, her father was alledged to have been one of the lesser chiefs. I don't know if this is true or not.

I have been told by a descendant of the dtr. Sarah that when Nathaniel died in AR, Sarah and her husband went to AR and brought her mother Lydia back to GA, where Lydia lived until her death in 1862. She is found in her dtr's household in 1860.

I have Dorcas Wofford b. Dec. 9, 1766 Spartanburg SC died abt 1811 either Spartanburg or perhaps Smith Co. TN. I have her married to Enoch Bruton (Brewton). And 9 children for them. Benjamin, David, Joab, Enoch, Zilphia, Jesse, Nancy, Elisha, and Lucinda.

Dorcas's father, John "Stamping Wolf" was my 5th great uncle, brother to James "Jimmie" Wofford.

Sorry, I don't have the information on the soldiers. There are books in the libraries that if you're lucky you will find your person listed. Do a google search, sometimes you can find this information.

What Woffords do you have? I may be able to help you out on them.

I'm more interested in your Maddox line. This is also a direct line of mine. I don't have a Nicholas listed in the tree, as I've mainly concentrated on my direct line.

I know nothing more about Nathaniel except that he and his father were involved in the Revolutionary War. The information is confusing and I have no written documentation. The area Nathaniel and Lydia lived in is where SC, NC, and GA all join.

He was married to Lydia Hopper and had 10 children as I recall. He also had 2 Cherokee concubines, Little Flower and Snow Comfort. This may have been two names for the same person called Ahnewakee. My family is descended from Meley Jane Wofford whose father was Nathaniel and mother Little Flower according to family tradition. Meley Jane had a daughter Margaret who married Wilson O'Bryant, Sr. All three and other family are buried at Utopia in West Texas. They first lived in SC, moved to Ill, Ark, and then to TX. I got all this information from a Mary O'Bryant in Utopia several years ago. I think Mary is now deceased. If you look at the birth dates of Lydia's children, there is a gap of about 4 years between the 4th and 5th I recall. That was the time that I have for Meley Jane being born. So the information I have is that Nathaniel was being with Cherokee women and having children all the while he was having children with Lydia.

I read your reply with great interest - my line does not include Nathaniel Wofford (as far as I know but I haven't gotten too far in my Wofford research as yet, there are Woffords to be sure) - but I am very interested in how knowledgeable you are in regards to the Trail of Tears. I have an ancestor who is purported to have been 'very instrumental' in moving the Cherokee west, yet I have found no way to prove/disprove that he was even involved - Nicholas Maddox. You have knowledge not only of who was on that mission, but their ranks, etc. Will you be so kind as to point me in the right direction of where I can locate the information? Thank you

I do know of the maddoxdna website with a lot of good info, if there is another good website I'd love to learn of it, please keep the name Nicholas in mind if you should find out anything in your research, I'd be very appreciative
