Hi Vern!
Yes, my website has not been working correctly for awhile, and I have not had time to fix it.
The only Bartons I have in my family is my sister's husband. I don't believe they have done any research on their family at all. If you have any info you would like to share, I can pass it along and ask her...
All the Best,
Alicia

Hi. My name is Mark and I believe my grandfather Samuel Wohl, and subsequently my mother Gloria, Aunt Miriam and Uncle Milton were related to the Milton Wohl who was a professor of Linguistics at Fresno State. He, his wife, who was from Ecuador visited Denver in 1967-68 or so and I met him and his daughters. I believe Milton was 1st cousin to my mother. If you are related to him then you are related to me. Hello cousin. I also vaguely remember them talking about Trudy. Contact me if you desire further perhaps fascinating conversation about our relatives.
Ran across your letter through Mocavo.com. I no longer belong to Ancestry. My grandfather Arthur Ginzler (Aron Ginczler) was born in Erdobenye, one of several children. There are atremendous number of Ginzler, Ginczler, Gintzler records on JewishGen.com. My ggf Samuel Ginczler married twice. His second wife was Regina Neuman. He was born in Ujhely. Apparently, his father Herman (Jewish name Zvi Wolf) was the chief rabbi of Erdobenye. Samuel and most of his family came to the US in the 1890's and settled in Columbus, OH. (One of his daughters was the Broadway star Josephine Victor.) I've done what I call a "narrative family tree" of my Ginzler roots. If you're interested, send me your email at cgsimon17@gmail.com and I'll send it to you. Most of our family is still at least nominally Jewish although we include a Quaker, a Buddhist, at least one Catholic and a variety of Christians.

I do not have any of the names or towns that you list in the genealogical records for my Wohl family members. They came from Trembowla (now Terebovlya) in what was Galicia in Austria (and is now in the Ukraine). The people stand still and the countries move around in that part of the world. At times the region was a part of Poland as well. This shtetl was a few miles south of Tarnopol and a few more miles south of L'vov in Poland. That does not mean that we are not related, just that we have not yet found the link. I do not know whether my grandfather Herman Wohl had any brothers or sisters in Europe. None apparently came to the US. His parents' names were Jacob and Rosa Wohl. His wife's maiden name was Yetta Fillit and I think she came from Husiatyn. Her mother's maiden name may have been Presser but that is quite uncertain. There are quite a few Wohls in the L'vov records but apparently not my family. There is a famous Wohl family that came to the US from Czechoslovakia during the 19th century, from just across the border from Poland. The town was called Bucascz (spelling?). The most famous person in the family was David P. Wohl who founded the Wohl Shoe Company here in St. Louis, which was eventually merged into the Brown Shoe Company. That was one of the largest in the country for some years.

Shalom.

My name is Lawrence Wohl. My grand father Herman Wohl came to the United States in the early 1900's. He was married to Mildred Kerner whom he met while living in New York City. Both my grand father and grand mother died in 1988. Herman had eleven brothers and sisters and he was the tenth youngest.

My grand mother had two sisters named Girdy and Laura. I believe that my grand father lost family during the war, many of his siblings stayed behind in Europe.

My maternal grandfather Isaac Wohl emigrated to New York in 1904ish (he was born in 1892 and passed in 1942) leaving behind a large Wohl family who were summarily killed by the Nazis. He was a furier and an official of The International Furiers Union as early as 1913. His wife was Yetta who emigrated with him. My 89 year old mother Blanche Wohl was born in the states in 1920.

A few years ago I was doing business in Latin America which uses the mother's maiden name as your last name and the Wohl name was resurrected in my family.

Hello Martin,

This is Sherri. I remember meeting you when I was very young, but remember your parents sooo well. It was Aunt Helen who taught me to cook my first meal - french toast. Both of my children (all grown) have heard many all about them. I am a grandma now, so there is another branch to the tree. My daughter, Melissa Coleman (named after Mae married Daniel Newcomb on November 6, 2oo5. Jackson (named after uncle Jack Cerin) was born on November 25, 2007.
Sad news - my dad is very ill, but he is trying to give me as much information as he can remember about both the Wohl's and the Cerin's. I would love to receive any information you have. I am really interested in grandma's (Irving and Rubin's mom) first name and how and when the Wohl's came to the U.S. I was in touch with Irwin for a while, but lost touch when he and Audrey moved to New Hampshire. Do you have any information on where he is now?

I am glad to see the Wohl's actively involved in finding out about our family history and maybe locating each other. I have been trying to get information on the Cerin's, but have not had much luck.

Hope all is well with your branch.

Sherri

She arrived, with her mother, at Ellis Island in NY on July 14, 1923, when she was 21 years old. I believe her father was already in NY.
She married my grandfather, Shimon Menachem Heller, a couple of years later in NY. They had both originally come from Stratyn. Both have since passed on and are buried in Queens, NY in burial plots that are owned by the Stratyner Chevra.

My contribution to this is likely to be small. My immediate relatives were immigrants from Poland to Leipzig Germany in the late 1800s and then were forcibly ejected from Germany back to Cracow by the Nazis and most perished. Most of the spelling was Wuhl. I have a cousin Haim Kern who is an artist in Paris and may know more than I do. I suspect the W*HL ancestry is enormous and scattered around the globe.

Scott, I see no names in your list that I can specifically tie into. However, it is likely that there is some relationship. My Wohls came from the Terebovlya shtetl, a few miles east of Berezhany and there are a lot of Wohls in L'vov, a few miles north, during the period when your accestors lived there. As for the name variants, there were no vowel diacritical marks used in Yiddish at the time so that the transliterated name would have been VHL (either vov, hey, lamed or vayz, hey, lamed). From that you could have gotten Wohl, Wahl, Wuhl, Vale, etc. It was only at the end of the 18th century that King Joseph II of Austria (the Galician monarch at the time) passed a law requiring Jews to adopt and register their surnames. Before that they were mostly referred to by patronymics (i.e. Isaac son of Abraham).

I have traced my Wohl roots back to Brezin, Galicia, Austria (actually Brezhany, Ukraine now). My great-grandfather Leib Wohl b. May 7, 1887 and came to the US in July 1903. His parents were Chaim Wohl and Beile Michel. He had several siblings born between 1869 and 1891. Many came to the US, some died as children and others I cannot determine their fate. If any of this sounds familiar, please contact me.

I am looking for links back from Chaim. In the birth records from the town their name at that time was spelled Wuhl. I am certain that the spelling of Wahl is also related going back.

Thank you
Scott Horwitz

Wikipedia leaves out the best part, the tale of how saul got to be King of Poland. The following is from an old issue of "Encyclopedia Judaica":

Biography of Saul ben Judah Wahl

Merchant and "parnas" of Brest-Litovsk Jewry. Son of Samuel Judah ben Meir of the town of Katzenelnbogen in Hesse-Nassau (now in Germany) and Padua in the Veneto in northern Italy. According to tradition he occupied for short time the throne of Poland.

Saul was born in Padua in 1541. In his youth he went to Brest-Litovsk to study at the yeshiva there and remained, becoming a wealthy merchant. In 1578 King Bathory leased him the salt pans in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania with the sole right to sell their products, and in 1580 also the salt mine at Wieliczka near Cracow. Later Wahl farmed the King's revenues in the Brest-Litovsk region, and in 1589 King Sigismund III granted him the status of "servus regis". From the 1580's Saul Wahl was among the "parnasin" of the Brest community and a leader in Lithuanian Jewry, taking an important role in the Council of Lands from the beginning of its existence. In 1593, through the mediation of Wahl, the Brest-Litovsk community was granted the right to adjudicate lawsuits between Jews despite strong opposition from the City council. He built the women's gallery in the Brest-Litovsk synagogue in memory of his wife, Deborah Drucker. Of Saul Wahl's sons, Meir Katzenellenbogen-Wahl was Rabbi of Brest and one of the founders of of the Council of Lithuania in 1623, and Abraham (Abrashka) was Rabbi of Lvov (Lemberg) for many years. Saul is reputed to have married his beautiful daughter to a Rabbi of Brest-Litovsk of the same name as his. Little is known of the last years of his life. He appears to have died in Poland between 1617 and 1622.

A number of legends have grown up around the figure of Saul Wahl. Some scholars regard them as an expression of the economic and political achievements of the Jews in Poland before the catastrophic Chmienicki persecutions of 1648.

One legend relates how he became the King of Poland. Prince Radziwill (apparently Mikolaj Kraysztof), surnamed The Black, who lived in the 16th century, desiring to do penance for the many atrocities he had committed while a young man, undertook a pilgrimage to Rome in order to consult the Pope as to the best means for expiating his sins. The Pope advised him to discharge all his servants and to lead for a few years the life of a wandering beggar. After the expiration of the period prescribed, Radziwill found himself penniless and destitute in the city of Padua, Italy. His appeals for help were heeded by nobody and his story of being a Prince was received with scorn and ridicule. He finally decided to appeal to Samuel Judah Katzenellenbogen, the Rabbi of Padua. The latter received him with marked respect, treated him very kindly and furnished him with ample means for returning to his native country in a manner befitting his high rank. When the time for departure came, the Prince asked the Rabbi how he could repay his kindness. The Rabbi then gave him a picture of his son Saul, who years before had left for Poland, and asked the Prince to try and find the boy in one of the many yeshivas of that country. The Prince did not forget the request. Upon his return to Poland he visited every yeshiva in the land until finally he discovered Saul in that of Brest-Litovsk in the Duchy of Lithuania. He was so captivated by the brilliance and depth of Saul's intellect that he took him to his own castle, provided for all of his wants and supplied him with all possible means for study and investigation. The noblemen who visited Radziwill's court marveled at the wisdom and learning of the young Jew and thus the fame of Saul spread throughout Poland. Eventually he came to the notice of King Stephen Bathory, who granted him the commercial privileges listed above.

When King Bathory died in 1586 the people of Poland were divided into two factions: each one supporting one of the two leading families of the kingdom, the Zamaikis and the Zborowskis. There were quite a number of candidates for the throne but the contending parties could agree on no one. There existed at that time in Poland, a law that said that the throne could not remain unoccupied for any length of time and in case electors could not agree upon a candidate, an outsider should be appointed "rex pro tempore". This honor was then offered to Radziwill, who was the second highest ranking noble in the land, but he refused, saying that there was a man who belonged to neither party and who in wisdom and goodness was far superior to anyone he knew. That man possessed only one very slight shortcoming and if the Diet would make his selection unanimous, he (Radziwill) would acquaint it with his name. Accordingly Saul's name was solemnly proposed and amid great enthusiasm and shouts of "Long live King Saul !", Saul was elected to this high office. The name "Wahl" was given him from the German word "wahl", meaning election. Traditions disagree as to the length of his reign. Some state that he ruled only one night, others make it a few days. All, however, are agreed that Saul succeeded in passing a number of very wise laws and among them some that tended to ameliorate the condition of the Jews in Poland.

Following this brief interregnum, King Sigismund III, son of King John of Sweden, was elected to the throne. In return for his service to the kingdom, Saul was awarded valuable commercial interests and he became a wealthy merchant. His "servus regis" title made him accountable only to the King, rather than any of the courts of the kingdom. Among his commercial privileges was the ability to collect taxes on bridges, brandy and flour. He is alleged to have built a synagogue in Brest-Litovsk, as well as a house of learning and a public bath. He also built several commercial establishments on the market square. He is reputed to have been the only Jew of the period to be adorned with a gold chain and various medals of distinction which he willed be sold after his death and the procedes be distributed to the poor.

Although the story cannot be supported by much historical data, it has gained a firm place in the belief of the Jewish people.
Samuel Judah Katzenellenbogen (born 1521 in Padua, Italy, died March 25, 1597 in Padua) was an Italian Rabbi, the son of Rabbi Meir ben Isaac of Padua (Meir Padua). He was distinguished even in his youth for his scholarship and his oratorical gifts. He was associated, both as rabbi and as writer, with his father, after whose death, in 1565, he was elected rabbi at Venice. He had many pupils, one of whom had a bust made of his beloved teacher, who was of imposing appearance, and set it up in the schoolhouse so as to have it constantly before his eyes (Eisenstadt-Wiener, Da'at Kedoshim, p. 82, St. Petersburg, 1897-98). Chaim Joseph David Azulai ("Shem ha-Gedolim," s.v.) speaks of this fact in connection with Samuel Judah Katzenellenbogen's great-grandfather, Judah Minz.

Katzenellenbogen was highly respected by his coreligionists throughout Italy, and, because of his wide scholarship, was honored by Joseph Karo, Solomon Luria, and Moses Isserles. Non-Jews also esteemed him highly: Paul Weidner, a converted Jew, dedicated his works to him. He is said to have accorded a hospitable reception to the Polish prince Nicholas Radziwill when the latter visited Padua. When the prince found himself in need of money he appealed to Katzenellenbogen, who lent him the necessary funds for continuing his journey, requesting in return that he deal leniently with the Jews in his country, and protect them against the accusation of ritual murder.

On Katzenellenbogen's death Leo Modena delivered the funeral oration, which has been printed in the Mivchar Yehudah (p. 63b). Samuel left one son, who is known under the name of Saul Wahl. Katzenellenbogen is the author of several responsa, which are included in the responsa collection of Moses Isserles (Nos. 23, 126, 127, 129) and in that of Samuel Kala'i; and of twelve derashot, published by his pupil (Venice, 1594; reprinted Lemberg, 1811, where the author's name is erroneously given as J. Minz). Katzenellenbogen also contributed some of the notes to the annotated edition of Maimonides' "Yad ha-HazaKah" (Venice, 1550), which notes Azulai ("Shem ha-Gedolim," s.v.) ascribes to Meir of Padua.

This is from Wikipedia...

Yes. I am aware of "The Unbroken Chain". We have copies here in the Jewish Community Center Library in St. Louis. Interestingly, it is the book by Ephraim Zalman Margolith of Galicia (who lived from 1762 to 1828) called "Ma'alot Ha-Yu-hasin" which traces Rashi's ancestry back two millenia through a series of other famous rabbis, including Hillel the Great, all the way to King David (1043 to 973 BCE). The Old Testament of course traces King David's lineage back to Adam and Eve, so theoretically we should be able to trace our ancestries back to the origin of mankind. I have not looked for the book because I canot read Polish, Hebrew or Yiddish, the languages in which I presume the book is probably written. I don't recall anymore, it has been over 35 years, but I believe the New York City Library might have had a copy. I was told that the scholarship is somewhat questionable but it does make for a wonderful family legend with which to impress the grandchildren. All I need is the details of the missing ancestors during the 300 years between 1586 and 1886. Neither "The Unbroken Chain" nor Neil Rosenstein's book "These Are The Generations: Eileh hatdolt. Genealogical details of the origin of the Katzenellenbogen family and descendents, including interrelated family pedigrees" really lists a Wohl ancestor that I can find a direct tie to from my forbears from Galicia.

I know who you are referring to. I am a descendent of Saul Wohl and the history is detailed in a 2 volume book called 'the unbroken chain'. The Wohl and Kern families connect back to 1500 and prior. Saul Wohl was a descendent of Rabbi Meyer Katzenellenbogen who was the chief rabbi in Padua. It is said that Meyer Katzenellenbogen is descended from Rashi and in turn directly to King David. The Wohls are related to the Wuhls and Wahls. Big family tree. I am descended from the Kern/Wuhl union. There are many Kerns in Paris and a number of Wuhls in the US and UK.

I also have family from the Galicia area, I believe. My great-grandfather (Sam Wohl) had an older brother, Yoshir "Shir" Wohl, who stayed in the old country when the rest of the family came over to the United States. It is believed that he, his wife and six children all died in the Holocaust. Anymore information about the family and if any of them survived would be greatly appreciated. Our family also has passed down the story of having a relative who was King of Poland for a day (Saul Wahl).

EMMA (STEINBERG) WOHL & LEO WOHL/BROOKLYN, NY/GERMANY

Calling All Wohl People !

I am searching for the burial site of Emma Wohl and her husband Leo Wohl. Leo Wohl was born about 1871 in Posen (Poland), Germany and emigrated to Brooklyn, New York around 1884 and was a salesman in the import/export business. Leo Wohl married Emma Steinberg and they had children named Jeannette, Herman and Bernard Wohl.. The 1930 Census shows them living on East Seventh Street, Brooklyn. Leo Wohl died in ?Brooklyn, New York around 1952 or 1953 and Emma Wohl died around 1950.

Any help or search hints would be greatly appreciated.

Monica

New York Wohls

Howard,

I am researching my great grandfather on my father's side. His name was Louis (Leib) Wohl and was originally from Austria (what is now Ukraine). He had many brothers and sisters and from what I can determine from ship manifests most settled in the New York City area. My great grandparents came to Chicago in 1912.

From what I can tell the parents of Louis were Baile and Chaim and they were from Berezhany and their children were Moses, Leib, Abraham, Chane, and Rivka (I assume there is more, but this is all I could find in the AGAD files,)

Hope you have a connection.

Scott Horwitz
