S

WOJCIECHOWSKA is in a female form and WOJCIECHOWSKI in a male.
It sure is a popular name in Poland. In 1990 census there were 63529 people with surname WOJCIECHOWSKI. www.herby.com.pl/herby in Polish and only distribution.
http://maxpages.com/poland
www.pgsa.org
www.polishroots.com/genpoland
About 154 HOPEKs, 240 HAPEKs in Poland in 1990.
Using http://mapa.szukacz.pl there are about 31 villages/towns with word Potok. I found a Potok Rzadowy and Rozany Potok (could be your Potok Rosya). A good locator is www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm

Do you have his original baptismal certificate from the church? If yes, can you posted or send it to my private e-mail box?
5 HERZYKs came thru Ellis Island. Two were from Zablocie, 2 from Zarzecze and 1 from Babazin.
Only about 29 Zablocie, 16 Zarzecze and no Babazin in Poland.

Thank you for your information on gender name endings and ithe nformation on names. Sometimes I think how much easier it would be to find a relative if they just had an unusual name.

Frank as we knew him was always a mystery. Even his sons had been told different stories concerning his past. The information on his parents names and his place of baptism came from his marriage infomation he gave when he and my grandmother Mary Klusak/Kusak Laszczak were married in a polish speaking catholic church in Minneapolis, MN.
I have attached a photo of my grandmother Mary klusak as she appeared in about 1903 when she married her first husband Jan Klusak /Kusak in the area surrounding Kracow. Possibly Zablocie.

Once agian thank you for your post.

Wojciechowska Agnes

My great grndmother Agnes Wojciechowska was married to Vincentius Hopak (Hapek). Their son, my grandfather, Franciscus was baptised in Potock Rosya. Any information on Agnes and Vincentius, Hapek or Hopak, family would be appreciated. I have no information other then their names. Their son my grandfather Franciscus changed his name to Frank Hopkins after arriving in Minnesota. It is also possible that Frank had a cousin Marcin Klusak. Martin listed his mother's maiden name as Heryzk. Frank may be related through the Herzyk or Klusak line. Any one with information about Agnes, Vincentius, Frank or the names Klusak or Herzyk please contact me. samlows1@comcast.net.
Hate when I remember something after I've just sent a message....if Francseska died prior to 1954, it's possible she did not have a Social Security number. My paternal grandparents died sometime in the 1950's and did not have SSN. But, the fact the ship manifest shows Francseska filed a petition for naturalization in June and December of 1939, I would request a search for her Alien Registration Form (which she would have been required to complete in 1940).

If I lived in Dunkirk, NY, Sam and I would visit the cemetery and take pictures! Poor Sam, not interested in genealogy, has earned a lot of "cemetery time" helping me look for cemeteries. He has hunted many cemeteries with me, searching for gravesites.....some long-forgotten and almost bulldozed by a housing development! I can understand not knowing what steps to take next! When I began researching my family history (about 6 years ago), I had a copy of my mother's Polish birth certificate and her naturalization certificate. I ignored all the advice I was given and I wasted a whole year looking for the wrong documents in the wrong places. Since, I have learned the steps to follow....were, #1. Research the census records. Originally, I thought, "how stupid" I know where they all lived! #2. Research INS for naturalization records or Alien Registration Form. #3 Research church records, through the Latter Day Saints Family History Library (FHL), for baptismal and marriage records. #4. Research death certificates, obits, funeral memorial prayer cards. #5. Research the ship's manifest. Having wasted a year.....not knowing where to look or how to begin, I received some very valuable information from a volunteer at the LDS FHL in Salt Lake City Utah which led me to learn about my grandfather who died before I was born and have been determined to try to help as many researchers as I could......glad I could help. With Winter coming on us...you might want to encourage Dad to take pictures before Halloween.

Dell
Does your Father know where your great great grandparents and great parents may be buried? The cemetery may have a clue as to when Francseska died. The SSDI usually doesn't have an incorrect date of death, so Dad may be right. If Aunt Rita is alert, I would take the advantage of asking her questions now. Without knowing how old Aunt Rita would be, I would suggest you keep your letter simple, asking her questions on one or two particular persons and also ask if she may have some photos. Sometimes, they don't remember everything at once, but as a few days go by, recall more and more. Would appreciate knowing the results of your research....

I spoke with my father and that SS Adminstration record wouldn't be right.. The birth date would be right but he said he started dating my mother in 1954 and both my great great grandparents( Francseska and Stanislaw) and my great grand mother and great grandfather (Josefa and Stephen) were all dead. He said he married my mother in 1956 and he knows they were all dead before 1954. The SS Administration has her death in 1974... could they have made a typographical error? He told me I still have a great Aunt Rita alive, sister to my grandmother Hattie, and I should write her a letter and see what info she can give me also.. which would probably be a good idea..I will let you know what I find out..

At age 12, I'm not sure I would remember many funerals. The only reason I remember my great grandmother is because of pictures....if not for those pictures, I'm sure I wouldn't remember her....I was only 7. You're right....her maiden name would have been Piasecki. I would check out the 1910 census for Dunkirk....he may have been living with the family. The www.ins.usdoj.gov is the address. Remember you will need a separate form for each person. If you have a problem obtaining the form you can call 1-800-870-3676. Gave some thought about the information I found this morning....and thought maybe Franceska returned to Poland with her children because one of her parents may have died....can't think of another reason for her to return to Poland. Have you requested a "hard copy" of the chip's manifest? Don't do it throught the Ellis Island Passenger Search....if you request a copy from the National Archives direct, the fee is $17.50, but you will need their form...NATF Form 81. Francseska's Social Security Application may reveal the name of her parents. If you need help with the Form G639,,,remember to yell for HELP!

Oh my gosh! This is mind boggling! You are so good!! It was Dunkirk, NY.. it was just written wrong on the ship manifest! Ok.. it looks like I need to get busy...I printed out the letter to the SS administration. I do show Francseska's SS# as being 080-44-3759...if this is her...she shows to have lived and died in Dunkirk NY.. what's really weird is if she died in 1974 I would have been 12 years old and I don't ever remember meeting her...I never seen Stanislaw's name on the ship manifest.. just the 7 year olds.. if her brother was Waclaw Piasecki then now I know her maiden name. Right? I will complete the INS form G639 for Francseska and Josefa and see what comes up. I get the form at www.ins.usdoj.gov, correct? This is so exciting..

The manifest shows Helena was "U.S. born" therefore it would appear the family originally arrived in the U.S. sometime after the birth of Wladislawa (who was born in Poland). Franceska and her children returned to Poland sometime after the birth of Helena. Franceska's husband was Stanislaw/Stanley. Helena's baptismal church record may verify her father's name. The LDS FHL has microfilmed the baptismal and marriage records of many churches (up to 1915).

I show her registration number was 4474818...her card doesn't have a date on it.. so Im not sure...Now Josefa's husband Stephen Klocek (my grandfather) was naturalized on June 5, 1944..I have a copy of that.. they were married...as far as I know..
He was hit by a train right after that in Dunkirk NY.. anyway,
if you go to ellisislandrecords.com and put in Wojciechowska it will come up... the came over on a ship called the Ryndam on January 5, 1909 from Rotterdam, South Holland the Netherlands... I looked at the ship "log" and everything.. they came with like 75 cents...Is it possible that Francseska was naturalized (since she has a SS#) and her daughter was not?
I wouldn't put it past them in the town of Dunkirk...Hahaha..

I found Francseska Wojciechowska and her children on ellisislandrecords.com. I knew my great grandmothers name was Josefa and I knew she came over with her mother and sisters from my grandmother (who has since passed away), when I put in Josefa's name on Ellis Island sure enough she came up with Francseska and the others...the all went to Dunkirk, NY (where I was born) and it also showed that their destination was Dunkirk NY.. first time I went to ellisislandrecords.com I put the spelling of the name in wrong and got nothing.. realizing I spelled their name wrong.. after my father told me..and looking at my Uncle Benny's obituary...I went back and did it again and hit the jackpot.
I live in TX now... my father sent me a copy of my great grandmothers (Josefa's) alien registration receipt card..Im not sure she was ever naturalized.. but as for Francseska...I don't know.. I did find a Francseska (with your help) on the SS death master file just now.. shows SHE was born in Feb. 0f 1880.. which would fit with the age given on ellisislandrecords.com... she was 25 in 1905 when she came over.. So, thats what Ive got so far...

I do have my great grandmothers alien identification form and my great grandfathers naturalization papers. He didn't become naturalized until June of 1944.. Now the great great grandparents on my great grandmothers side (Francseska) whom is Josefa's mother is whom I'll be starting with I guess. It really can get confusing.. Thank you..
Martin/Mary Wojciechowska

I'm looking for any relatives of Martin Wojciechowska and his wife Mary. They had at least two children..Elizabeth and Helena. Elizabeth married Stanley Murawski and Helena (Helen) married Maximillian (Max) Lawicki. All are from the Buffalo, NY area.
I am tracing Elizabeth's line although I am very interested in the Lawicki connection. Elizabeth's children would be well into their 90's now if any are around at all.
If any of these names ring a bell please contact me.
Thanks,
Michelle

Wojciechowska

My great-great-grandmother's maiden name was Wojcihowska. She married Paul Gwozdzik, and their son Michal Gwozdzik was born in 1895, in Sloboszowice, Poland or Malic, Russia. Michal came to Buffalo, New York in 1913, later married Honorata Rogalski Dobrucka in 1924. If you have any information i would greatly appreciate it.

Wojciechowska

Trying to find information on my great great grandfather. I do know that my great great grandmother came over on 1-05-1909 thru Ellis Island on a ship called the Ryndam from Rotterdam, South Holland the Netherlands. Her name was Francseska Wojciechowska and she came with her five children Marianna (9yo), Stanislawa (7yo), Wladislawa (3yo), Helena (1yr3mo), and Josefa (5yo).. Josefa was my great grandmother, later being called Josephine. They all settled in Dunkirk, NY... all were blond hair, blue eyed .. I assume that Francseska's husband was already in Dunkirk.. Josephine, my great grandmother, married Stephen Klocek and they had 6 children; Stephen, Bernard, Chester, Walter, Lottie and my grandmother Hattie. My grandmother Hattie Klocek had two children in Dunkirk, my mother being one of them. I was also born in Dunkirk. Any info anyone else might have on my great great grandfather would be great...

How did you learn of the exact date and name of the ship Franczecka's arrival in the U.S.? The fact that her children had to complete an Alien Registration Form in 1940 indicate she was not naturalized.

Re: Wojciechowska

Checked the Ellis Island Passenger Search web site, but didn't find a Wojciehowski who could be Francseska's husband. Did find two who arrived in 1907, but they were single. It was common for the husband to some to the U.S. without his family, work and send money for passage. Because Helena was 15 months old, I would guesstimate, her husband may have come to the U.S. sometime in 1906 or 1907. Have you checked the death records of her children (including Josefa's) to see if it contains the name of their father? Or their Social Security Applications (which would show the name of their parents and where they were born. Where did you learn the date, port of arrival and the name of the ship? Her naturalization papers? If so, the papers didn't give you information on her husband? Another source, to check would be the church marriage records for Josefa and Stephen Klocek. Some records have the name of the parents of the bride and groom. Since Fransceska arrived in 1909, have you researched the U.S. federal census record for 1910 and 1920 for the area where the family lived at that time? It would be easier if you knew the name of her husband, but it can be done without that name. Just a note....my grandfather arrived in April of 1910, my grandmother arrived in December of 1913 with two little girls, age 4 and 6.

I saw the name of Stanislawa WOJCIECHOWSKA on your posted message. That is my husband's grandmother's name on his father's side. Rumor has it that Stanislaw SZEWCZAK (Stanislawa's husband) had difficulty with his name when he arrived here in the USA. He changed his name to SCHEPCOFF. His sons (as far as I know) are James & Mathew. Please, please e-mail me back. I would love to compare notes and help each other out.
I wonder if her husband was here already. Josefa married Stephen Klocek in Dunkirk NY and had 5 children like her mother.. Stephen, Walter, Chester, Lottie and Hattie Klocek. Any info about my greatgreat grandfather would be nice to know..
