Hi Richard, Sounds like you are all related as cousins by way of Hans & Pearl. I was also responding to Mary Marlene query, but I never received a reply. It's fun to find out something about all the descendents of the Simon and Anna Wold family who immigrated from Norway in 1880, I think. I visited their gravesite which is near Portland in the Douglas Pioneer Cemetery. I'm one of their grandchildren, in that my dad, Amill, was their youngest son. He had me when he was 46 years old. So that makes me one of your distant cousins. You also have cousins in Washington by way of Elise (Lizzie) Mason. I also talked to Hans Wold Jr several years ago. He was in Mukilteo, WA then. Hans Jr named one of his sons Hans. I think the other one's name is Martin. Lizzie's granddaughter, Carolyn Renaud, also lives in WA. Her grandson Alan Mason lives in Lincoln, California. If you read this and are interested, post your email address and I will send you info Alan has shared with me. He's the genealogist for the Wold's. I met him several years ago when he was researching the Wold family. I got mixed up reading your post. Who was your father? Hans and Pearl had a big family. My dad had only two children, Glen and Cecelia. Glen passed last year. Hope to hear from you,
Cecelia (Wold) Attix

Hi Renee' -
Sent you a post earlier then saw this one. If My Aunt Ruth is still alive, tell her for me that I am still in Portland, and she has two great nieces, three great-great-great nephews, and one great-great niece. I am sure she will remember the time she put shaving cream on a piece of Jell-o thinking she could get my dad to eat it, but Gary - who is either your dad or your uncle - whipped into the house, grabbed it and sucked it down! Your grandmother almost lost her teeth laughing!
Richard (Dick)

Aunt Lizzie - My great aunt - and her brother John lived in the St. Johns district of Portland, Oregon right along side the rail hump yard. I drove past there a few years ago and their home still stands. My dad Roland was their nephew.

Richard (Dick) Wold

If your g-mother is Ruth Wold-Newberg-Beck, either your father is Gary or Ron, or your mother is Paula, all cousins of mine. Your G-mother is my father Roland's sister. You have a great uncle Emmet, a great aunt Gayle, and a great aunt Martha along with your great uncle Hans, all children of Hans and Pearl Wold of Witten/Winner SD. You have cousins all over the place, some you may know: John, Gayle and Allan Newberg, (Children of Gayle) Richard (me), John, Ron, Emmett Wold, Carol Wold-Deharsh, Mary Wold Valentine, Robert Wold, and Gaila Wold Adams (Children of Roland), and Hans has two or three that I can't remember.

Your Great Grandfather Hans was a Baptist circuit-riding preacher in the Dakota Territories and died in Portland Oregon in the late '40s.

Hi Terje,

My name is Lois and I am a decented of Andreas Olsen Wold born in June 27, 1849 in Årdal. Hi father was Ole Iversen Wolden born in 1808 in Rogaland and his father was Iver Olsen.

Records I have go back and forth between Vold, Vollen, Wolden, but mostly Wold. I am sure there is a farm in Hjelmeland, Rogaland that is called Wold or something like that.

I see Vigrestad on my map, and though it is not that close to Årdal, I do know that my great Grandfather went from Rogaland to Vest-Agder when he has my great grandfather in 1876 in Arendal, so to think that one of his family members could have gone to Vigrestad is possible.

Of these people, do you have their parents/grandparents?
Ola Olson Voll born 26/5-1863
Olav Olson Voll born 31/12-1885
Ingeborg Olsdaughtser Voll born 22/8-1889
Oscar Olson Voll born 12/4-1896
Jon Olson Voll born 25/6-1897.

Could they be related to
Ole Iversen Wolden born in 1808 in Rogaland children:
Ole 1831
Serine 1833
Peder 1836
Guro 1838
Torkild 1841
Martha 1844
Ole 1846
Andreas 1849

Hi Hans -- I was pleased to see you have also responded to the original inquiry from Mary Marlene. I haven't received a reply. I called your dad several years ago. I am the daughter of Amill Wold AKA Amund. I stayed with your great aunt Lizzie for a brief time during WWII with my new nusband. She couldn't have been nicer to us. My parents were musicians, having their own orchestra and traveled throughout Nebraska and Wyoming with their orchestra. They moved to So California in time for my birth in 1925 in Long Beach, California. So your dad is my first cousin. I hope that his older sister, Ruth, is okay. I met your aunt Gayle in So Dakota before she passed. You have a relative, Carol Renauld, living in WA. Her grandmother was Aunt Lizzie. I'll send her email address if you're interested. You probably already know that Alan Mason, grgrandson of Lizzie, has done a lot of genealogy on the Wolds. I'm sure he would love to hear from you too. My goodness! Four generations of Hans Wolds!
Regards, Cecelia (Wold) Massey Attix.

Hey - We're related. You have some facts a little wrong. Of course, you probably know you have relatives in Mukilteo, Washington. Hans Wold's younest son, also named Hans. I think he is still with us. At any rate, if you read this, send a reply and I'll tell you how your grandfather, Hans, the evangelical preacher was my dad's oldest brother. My dad had me when he was in his late forties, but I've collected quite a bit of genealogy. Also Alan Mason has his history on Ancestry too. His grandmother was sweet Aunt Lizzie. My young husband and I visited with her in WW2.

Just read this additional message you sent to Mary. I met your grandmother's sister, Gayle, in So Dakota, approx 1992. At that time she told me an amusing story about your grandmother, Pearl, not approving my father's occupation as a musician because it involved dancing! Later I received news from one of her daughters that she had passed. It was a pleasure to meet her and her husband. One of their granddaughters was on her way to college and she stopped by and played one of her original compositions, I believe on the sax. Very talented. Please give my best to your grandmother!

You've found another relative! My grandparents, Simon and Anna, were the ones who came to America in 1887. My father, Amund on the immigration papers, but for some reason was changed to Amill when he joined the army, was the youngest son in the family of Simon and Anna Wold. Alan Mason has information on our Wold connection. His grandmother, Elise (aka) Lizzie, was one of my dad's younger sisters. My dad and mom were musicians and moved to So Calif in 1924. Dad was in his '40's when I was born. My older brother, Glen Wold, passed this year. He retired to Colorado. I'll be happy to email an ancient photo of the original immigrant Wold family if you would like. My name is Cecelia (Wold) Massey Attix. You have very good genes!!! I talked by phone to Hans G several years ago. Hope everything is okay.

I would post the birth, immigration, etc that you found in the census as well as other factual information so the volunteer who may help you, will have the data all in one place. If you are guessing at something, make that clear too. Did you submit a correction to Ancestry for the Wald name being used in the index?

Stephanie

I should say that with the attachment you need to scroll it so you can see the right side, #272.

Norwegian reseach can be tricky with the naming conventions. It takes a while before you know what to expect as possibilities. Here's a bried explanation at http://www.nndata.no/home/jborgos/names.htm

That attachment is from the Aker parish record in Norway. 1852-1859. Go to http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read and click on Oslo and then you can see all the choices. To get to number 272 within "Aker 1852-1859", I had to move forward a number of pages to get to the right page.

Stephanie

Kes,

If your Christian Olsen Wold was from Riverdale township, Oneida County, Idaho in 1910, he was b. abt 1858 or 1859 which is 20+ years off from the Christian Olsen Wold who was in the Ottertail County, Mn area. This man immigrated about 1879

Do you have a birth date of 22 August 1858? Did he marry Annie Nielsen who was born in Utah to Danish parents? Were his children Rolf, Carl, Leonard, Rebecca, Mabel, Varnel, Blanche and maybe it says Earl or another Carl?

Are you sure about his death date in 1911?

Wold is a fairly common name derived from a farm name in Norway. There are a number of Wold farms in Norway in different areas. His Wold aka Vold or Voll name may also be derived from Eidsvoll, an area in Norway.

He may actually be Christian Mathiasen who adopted his father's patrynomic name Olsen when he came to the US. If that is the case then he can be found in 1865 Norway http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&...

You can go to www.familysearch.org and see if the Christian Olson Wold there looks right. There are 3 people who seem to include this man in their work.

I looked at the 1910 US census to come up with names and dates and then looked at the LDS sources, and then the Norway sources.

I actually see a birth date of 21 August 1858. See the attachment

What concrete facts do you have?

Stephanie

Re: Jens Johnson Wold Family

Have you looked at them on the US censuses for more details? I found them as Johnsons in Hesper back to 1860.

PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

Jens J. Wold was born in Trondhiem, Norway, in 1832. He came to America in the year 1853, locating in Wisconsin where he worked as a laborer on farms. In 1859 he came and settled west of the village of Hesper, where he bought 80 acres of unimproved land. He improved the same and lived there for 18 years when he sold it, and bought a farm in Section 26, Hesper township. Here he erected fine buildings and also had a fine orchard. Mr. Wold was married in 1854 to Turina Ellingson. They were blessed with six children: Elling, a merchant at Hesper; Theodore, Decorah; Louise Johnson, St. Paul; Ella, (Mrs. Thune); John J., and Emma Humphrey, now deceased.

The Norway censuses online are 1900, 1875, 1865 and 1801 so he was already here before 1865 and he wasn't born for the 1801. The emigration from Trondheim records online don't start until 1867. Trondheim is a very broad area and can mean that he came from that general area. There are many Wold/Vold farms in Norway.

I would do some digging in the Hesper area. They were there for a while so there must be some notes in the church records and their marriage maybe about

Acc. to the 1900 census, Jens/John immigrated 1853.

Do you know Karen Engstrom who descends from Theodore?

Vesterheim Library in Madison Wisconsin would possibly have info on him. The immigrants are catalogued. The books printed so far go up to 1849.

My response may seem a little disjointed but as I look at different records, I add a little more to this post.

I have tried sending this twice. My DSL is giving me fits. Try again. I hope the other two posts didn't make it or this is totally redundant.

Unforunately her email address is invalid at this time. Some of her posts are from 1998 & 1999 so she has likely moved on.

She posted on the usgenweb.com/IA sites. Click on Winnesheik and then do a search for Wold.

Are you familiar with doing random searches on these boards? If you are, I would do a search for her and then post a little something to her, even if it isn't relevant.

I would also look for an obit for Jens in 1907.

NELS E. WOLD
Ross Township, Roseau Co, MN USA
Early Settlers in Roseau Co 1885-1910

Both Nels and Karrie (Paulelien) Wold were born in Norway. Karrie was born in 1871 and came to Portland, ND, when she was 18 years old.

Nels, who was born in 1855, also came to America at the age of 18 yrs. Nels and Karrie were married in Seattle in 1890.

Nels came first to Iowa, and worked on farms while attending night school to learn English and further his education. By the time he left Iowa he had earned a teacher's certificate. He taught in a rural school near Portland, North Dakota, as well as farming on a homestead there. However, a few years of drought in that area caused him to look for land elsewhere, and he came to Roseau county in 1895 and bought land in Section 1 of Ross Township.

In 1903, he also bought 160 acres adjoing Roseau Village on the west. The price was $4,000 - the top price up to that time. This parcel of land, part of which is known as West Acres, is occupied by Polaris Industries, Land O'Lakes, the West Side Trailer Court and others. In 1903, he also owned and operated a general store at the location now occupied by the Wahlberg Pharmacy. The home farm in Ross is now being farmed by his grandson.

The move in 1895, from Portland to Roseau county was made by covered wagon, with the cattle trailing along behind. He also brought with him a fine Shorthorn bull - the first registered bull to be brought into Roseau county.

The Indians were frequent visitors at the Wold farm, for their trails to the Indian Villages on the Roseau River and Roseau Lake went through the Ross farmstead. The Wold's Indian neighbors often came with moose meat and traded it for flour and sugar.

The Wold family included the following children:
Edgar Wold
Nicholine Wold married to Enos TEMPLE
Olga Wold married to J.C. GREEN
Oliver Wold
Clarence Wold
Arthur Wold

--page 267-268 Early Settlers in Roseau Co, MN 1885-1910

Apologies, after a few more days of research it appears my original facts were wrong. Contrary to what a couple of older family members thought, our *confirmed* Wold was Gustav Wold, married to Bertha Lunde. (Maybe his middle name was Christ? Just a guess....)

Census records for Shoshone County, Idaho (city of Wardner) in 1900 list a Gustav WALD (but that was a typo.)

Gustav had children but the only 2 to survive were George and Ben. We have good records for both, along with obituaries for 2 of their brothers that didn't survive. George was born in Spokane, WA (don't have the exact date with me, but it was before 1899). Ben was born in Wardner, ID (Dec 16, 1899)

Gustav died around 1905-06 in Wardner, ID. We have found no record of his death, obit, or tombstone but did find some pay journals from the Bunker Hill Mine with his signature on them. Bertha moved back to Spokane, WA after his death and we have census records that match.

The paper trail seems to dry up at Gustav, I'm hoping I can discover information or a link that provides a bit more history.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Cheers,
Kes

Hi Connie,

I'm searching for information on Christ Wold who was around Idaho and Washington (died in Idaho in 1911 I believe of black lung) and also had a brother (don't know the name) who may have been a doctor near Minneapolis?

Does any of this match the information you have on Hans Wold (potential brother I'm thinking....)

Thanks,
Kes

Looking for Frances Wold
I'm trying to make contact with Frances Wold who posted on a genealogy board back in 2003 about being a gg-grandchild of George Sanders and Martha Richardson. That email bounces so unable to contact via the board.

Suspect it might be Drex L Wold (obit posted here) wife although based on that obit it would have likely been a second marriage for both. Based on Drex being in Washington I'm guessing that this would mean the connection is via daughter Lula Isabelle Sanders who married a Abel Haken and moved to the Walla Walla area.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jon Sanders
