Re: Ancestry of Rev. John WOODBRIDGE (b. 1644)

Hello -

The Rev. John Woodbridge you mention was the seventh in a line of Rev. John Woodbridges, stretching back to a follower of John Wycliffe who was born c.1493. As you've likely discovered since your post, there's plenty of information online regarding these clergymen. You have to be careful, however, of the grandiose connections often made through their wives, principally Abigail Leete and Mercy Dudley (though my great-aunt had constructed an easily disproved line to royalty through Jemima Eliot, the wife of the Rev. John Woodbridge VIII (1678-1718). Two recently published books provide the most likely lines, relying on the most recent scholarship, and making full disclosures about links that are likely but unproven, unlikely, and older links that have been disproved.
These are:

Richardson, Douglas, "Plantagenet Ancestry: A Study in Colonial and Medieval Families", Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 2004
(for Mercy Dudley's family)

Roberts, Gary Boyd, "The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants", Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 2004
(for Abigail Leete's family)

"The Woodbridge Record" - kindly and painstakingly put online by Stephen Woodbridge - is based on research done in the 19th century, at a time when families' enthusiasm for finding noble ancestry often outweighed scholarly skepticism. Still, a fun document to peruse. Just don't trust it beyond, say, 1600.

I'd love to hear anything you've uncovered about the first four Revs; their lives are still a mystery to me.

Regards,

J. Dee
Dyke of New York, died last night at the home of Mrs. Helen F. Woodbridge on Somerset st in the fifth year of his age. The littel fillow was very popular and much thought of and his death is a sad blow to his parents. Diphtheria was the cause of death. The funeral will be private.

I wonder if Woodbridge was relation?

John WOODBRIDGE, formerly of Newbury, MA.

I am wondering if Rev. WOODBRIDGE took many other families to NJ with him. I ask this because at least two sons of Francis MOORE of 1600's Cambridge, MA, first moved to Newbury, MA, and then moved to Woodbridge, NJ, probably in the 1660's.

Hi Jay. After a month of searching for information on Francis MOORE of 1600's Cambridge, MA, I just came across information on Woodbridge, NJ, where two of Francis MOORE's sons moved to in the 1660's.

A brief history of the town mentions it was named after .. Rev. John WOODBRIDGE of Newbury, MA. Another web site told me that John WOODBRIDGE (b1613?) came to MA on the "William and Mary" in 1634. And, he married Mercy DUDLEY, dau. of Gov. DUDLEY of MA Bay Colony.

This message on the GenForum Message Boards mentions a son, Rev. Benjamin WOODBRIDGE, b1645. Perhaps your Rev. John WOODBRIDGE is another son.

Rev. WOODBRIDGE to Woodbridge, NJ. How many others?

Hello. During the past month (and last year) I have tried to put together a better description of the extended Francis MOORE family of 1600's Cambridge, MA.

I am limited to on-line research, and have not had much luck in finding a web site giving a good description of who his children were.

Today I discovered that I was putting the wrong name into a Google search. I tried a search for Francis' father, Enoch MOORE in England, and found much more information.

What seems pretty clear is that two of Francis MOORE's sons, Samuel and Matthew, moved to Newbury, MA, where their uncle and aunt lived. (Edmund and Sarah (MOORE) GREENLEAF)
But, in the 1660's, they are reported to have moved to Woodbridge, NJ.

I just did a search for Woodbridge, NJ, and found the town's web site offering a brief history. It states:
"Dally, in his history of Woodbridge, stated that it was so called in honor of Reverend John Woodbridge of Newbury, Massachusetts."

I am now wondering if a group of families who were in the same parish of Rev. Woodbridge in Newbury, MA, all left Newbury together and moved to Woodbridge, NJ.

I found a very good web site offering information on the MOORE families, and it mentioned two sources:
The Dally "Woodbridge and Vicinity" book mentioned above, and the DeForest's "Francis Moore of Cambridge, Massachusetts .."

It seems possible to me that more than two of Francis MOORE's children went to NJ. (Several are not accounted for.) And, I wonder if there is a list of all the people who moved to NJ with Rev. WOODBRIDGE.

Hello. I'd just like to post my query with a different subject.

I'd like to know if the Rev. WOODBRIDGE who was living in Newbury, MA, in the early 1600's .. had many families in Newbury follow him to NJ in the 1660's.

I have found out that the town of Woodbridge, NJ, is named after him.

I would like to find out if Samuel and Matthew MOORE of Cambridge and Newbury, MA, had other siblings go with them.

My name is Courtney. My Grandfather's name was William Miller Woodbridge, Miller was his Mother's maiden name. He was born 10/10/1925 and died about 1992-93. He was born and raised in Scranton Pennsylvania were he met and married my Grandmother Bettie, her maiden name was Rice. In 1955 he was hired by the Erie Railroad as a Trackman on the Wyoming Division at Dunmore, PA. In that time he moved up to NY and settled in the Western NY area with his wife and two daughters Gail and Sharie. He did have two brothers and I think at least one sister, which ones are still alive I can't say. When my mom and her sister were in their teens my grandparents got a divorce. He latter remarried but for his second wife, I don't know much about her exapt that she had two sons from a previous marrage.
For his family in general the only thing that I know is that for many generations they worked on the railroad, other then that we don't know much. If you have any infomation post here and I'll get ahold of you. Thank you.

Trying to trace the Woodbridge line for my wife -- I seem to have a gap.
I think I have a direct line to Richard Woodbridge (buried Jan. 9, 1763, Charney, Berkshire, England.) Married to Elizabeth.
But then I have a gap -- not sure who Richard's parents are. But then I think I pick up a generation later, with one of the brothers Richard or Thomas (christening, Aug. 3, 1673, Stanford on the Vale, Berkshire, England). Richard and Thomas's father and mother appear to be John annd Audrey.
Can anyone help me fill the gap between Richard and Thomas? Thanks
