Victoria Woodell -- Robeson Co., NC/Dillon Co., SC! Help!

Looking for spouse and parents of a Victoria Woodell. Other name possibilities: Mary Victoria, Victorine (her granddaughter was named Victoria, "nickname" Victorine), or last name possibly Woodall. Details, real names, as well as spellings are sketchy with this family and living descendants know little. (My grandmother is also illiterate.) All information posted below is with a big question mark.

Victoria was born in 1874 in Robeson County, North Carolina, daughter of David H. Woodell (B: 1843 Robeson Co.) and Catherine Small (D: 1884 Robeson Co.). She married Aron Williamson (have also seen "Iron" as first name) and had 7 children:

Lucius Williamson (B: 7 Apr 1900, Robeson Co., NC; D: 15 Nov 1987; my g-grandfather)
William David Williamson
Thurmond Williamson (B: 16 Jun 1916 Robeson Co.; D: 18 May 1983, Dillon Co., SC)
Nomy Williamson
Annie Williamson
Bertha Williamson
Charles Williamson (B: 1912; D: 8 May 1967, Dillon Co., SC)

I've located the graves of Thurmond and Charles at Greenlawn Cemetery, Dillon Co., SC. (via findagrave.com)

Victoria died in Dillon Co., SC, date unknown.

Any additional information to lead me further along in the Woodell/Williamson line would be much appreciated. I've been pulling my hair out searching! Thanks in advance.

You're looking at my tree on Ancestry.com. It's definitely a work in progress and I've been putting puzzle pieces together from the get-go. My grandfather believed that his grandmother's name was Rebecca Swint - "a fine lady from Alabama" - his words to me. However, there are a multitude of Swint kin and they even have a nice family book (I have a copy). There is a "Rebeccah E. Swint" in it of the right age. In 1880, she was living with her sister, Sarah Mills, in Titus County, Texas (per census records). So she was in the area. The only census I have which shows Lee Oliver living with his mother is the 1900 Harrison County one and her name is listed as "Eva R. Wooddell". And, that's pretty much what I have as far as his parents go. The next record I have for Lee Oliver is the 1910 Marion County, Texas census which shows him on his farm near Jefferson, Texas and married to Martha Emmaline Alexander. They moved off the farm before the next census to Caddo Parish, Louisiana where there are Woodells to this day.

I know the names Lee and Oliver were both in my family; my grandfather's name was Oliver. Did you check ancestry's trees? I saw one tree (maybe it is yours?) here http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.aspx?pid=-1375556627&amp...=
that listed his mother as Eva Rebeccah Swint.
My Alexander had unfortunately died in the civil war in 1865 but his widow and lots of kids moved to Texas to be with her brother, Alexander McKinnon. They were in Jasper Co., Texas in 1880, which is of course, east Texas. I will do some more looking, but I can't place exactly how they fit on the tree yet. Most of the Woodell were related. They go back to the Woodalls in Virginia, I believe. Will let you know if I find anything else.

I'm hoping you may be able to help me. I am looking for the parents of Lee Oliver Woodell born Sept. 16, 1879 somewhere in East Texas. I know that he had a farm in Jefferson, Texas at one time. My earliest record for him is a 1900 census record from Harrison County, Texas where he was 21 years old (the census lists him as 19). On this census record, his mother is listed as "Eva R. Wooddell". My grandfather (son of Lee Oliver) thought his grandfather's name was "John Henry" but he wasn't sure. I'm thinking they might be descendants of Alexander Woodell's group who moved to Texas. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am looking for the names of Lee Oliver Woodell's mother and father. Lee "Oliver" was born abt. 1880 in East Texas (Jefferson area) or NW Louisiana. His son Herbert Reeves Woodell, Sr. was my grandfather. Grandpa told us his grandmother's name was Rebecca Swint but I have not been able to prove this. We also thought his grandfather's name was John Henry Woodell - but I haven't found anything to confirm this either. Any help would be appreciated.

Peggy: Thanks for the great info. Land ownership records denote that Mary Woodell's Barnes family lived close by to the cemetery, actually right at the junction of Hwys 52 & 24 (about a half-mile southeast of the burials). They were on the southwest side of the junction (per records research by Jerry McKelvey). Would you assume that the Woodell family lived at the location where the burials took place? Can you please provide more about the extended Woodell family and the Barnes??

I also found (thru internet searches) a Mrs. A. M. Woodell living in Cove, Arkansas (Polk County) in 1916. She was listed in Solomon Richardson’s 1916 obituary (see full text below) as a daughter, so she fits correctly as Archibald M. Woodell's second wife. Another one of Solomon Richardson's daughters and a son are listed as Mrs. W. H. Littlepage of Hatfield AR and W. I. Richardson of Hatfield AR. I first thought that the Hatfield Methodist Church, of which the Barnes were founding members, was probably located at Lyda / New Hope, but the following info led me to realize that the church was elsewhere—-actually in the town of Hatfield, Arkansas, since two of Solomon's children lived at Hatfield. So, it looks to me that R. J. Barnes and family moved to Hatfield too and helped establish the Methodist church there.

Sol Richardson's obit also says he moved to Polk County in 1869, which was several years before Mary Woodell died. Archibald must have gone to Polk County after 1876 and married Sol's daughter there.

Another internet search found a T. A. Woodell working for the Pine Valley Lumber Company in Oklahoma in 1928, which appears to be either A. M. or a son. He was listed as the company store manager for Dierks Industries (lumber mills & associated railroads). Dierks at that time (per their 1928 company newsletter) had several mills in southwestern AR and southeastern OK, including Cove AR, Dierks AR, and Pine Valley OK.

The J. J. Richardson info you sent earlier also notes that ”a son who died early in life” is supposedly buried by Mary Woodell, but the "A. J. B." footstone found nearby to Mary does not coincide with these initials. Could A. J. B. instead have been perhaps a BARNES brother who died early in life?

You said earlier that Mary died in childbirth with a son. Do you know that son's name, and since I presume he also died at birth, his grave would have been next to Mary's and could be recorded officially as a burial here. For the other two or three unidentified graves nearby, perhaps they were additional Barnes or Woodell family members.

I will be glad to send you the photo of Mary's gravemarker, but could you email me directly so I can then email it back to you. Contact me at cathy@dustyroads.net. The photo was actually taken by Jerry McKelvey (he's the Nevada County historian and cemetery surveyor that you quoted earlier as having written up a description of Mary Woodell's burial site and marker).

Following is Solomon Richardson's obituary from the March 1916 MENA STAR newspaper: "Memorial of Uncle Solomon Richardson -- It is with deep personal, we well as fraternal, feeling that we announce the death of our beloved brother, Sol Richardson. He was born December 2, 1831, in Lauderdale County, Alabama, moved to Mississippi with his father in childhood and was married to Miss Sarah Tacket in 1853. To this union eight children were born, of whom five are living, wtih forty-three grandchildren and fifty-three great-grandchildren. The five living are: Mrs. J. K. Floyd of Oklahoma; Mrs. A. M. Woodell of Cove, Arkansas; Mr. W. I. Richardson of Hatfield, Ark; Mr. J. M. Richardson of Fort Towson, Oklahoma; and Mrs. W. H. Littlepage of Hatfield, Arkansas. He joined the Masonic lodge in 1863. He came to Polk County Jan 1, 1869, and was a charter member of Mountain Meadow lodge No. 218. He died March 4, 1916 at th e home of his daughter Mrs. W. H. Littlepage, and was buried by the Masonic lodge in the Hatfield cemetery in teh presence of a host of relatives and friends who mourn his loss. Uncle Sol, as he was called, was loved and respected by all who knew him. When we come to speak of the good qualities of this noble character, our words fail to do him justice. But we are glad to point to him as an example of an upright life and a true Christian gentleman. Uncle was 84 years, 3 months, and two days old. He enjoyed the wages of a Master Mason."

Cathy, I would love you to email pics! I know almost nothing of the cemetery, only what others have told me. My notes: "Woodell Cemetery is an old burial place on the north side of Hwy. 24 about one half mile northwest of the intersection of Hwys 24 and 53. I am calling it the Woodell Cemetery because that is the only name that could be found. There are only a few graves. I was able to find the base of three monuments, but only one inscribed stone. These three
monuments appear to have been disturbed. They are just off the highway right-of-way and may have been accidentally disturbed during road construction. A mound of dirt nearby probably marks a grave. The location is almost directly across the highway from the old Albert Redfern house and a field. -This record made by Jerry McKelvy February, 1998.
Buried here are: Mary F. Woodell wife of A. M. Woodell
born 10-19-1852
died 10-9-1876
Also at least two other unknown graves." (from USGENWEB)
--
from James Joseph Richardson (Archibald's great-grandson):
"I'm pretty certain that the Woodell cemetery in Nevada County is Frances Barnes Woodell's burial site, along with a son who died early in life. Arkansas Marriages, 1851-1900 lists A.M.T. Woodell wedding Mary F. Barnes 21 Dec. 1871. She died in 1876, when Oliver was very young. Archibald at some point moved to Polk County, where he married my great-aunt Emily Maria Richardson. They were Baptists. Emily's parents were a "mixed marriage" Solomon being Baptist, Sarah, Methodist. The Barnes family were Methodist, and I'm guessing that Oliver spent a lot of time with them, perhaps living with them, after Archibald remarried. Robert J Barnes, Julia F. Barnes and Oliver Woodell were all members of the Hatfield Methodist Church to which my grandparents belonged. (They were part of a small group which organized and built the church in the early 1890's)"

Don't know if this helps at all, but thought I'd send it anyway since it speaks of church affiliations. Good luck in your research!

Peggy: Were you aware of the location of Mary Frances Barnes Woodell's gravemarker or that the highway had crossed over this cemetery (probably about 1940)? I have a photo of her marker if you would like for me to email it to you. There is also a small footstone marker about four inches wide and 10 inches long engraved with the initials “A. J. B.” and several bases for other headstones that are now apparently lost.

We do not know the name of this cemetery where Mary is buried, or whether it was associated with a church, or if it was a just a family burying ground on a farm. Do you know? I wanted to know this because I'm compiling a history of Redland township, as well as assisting the Nevada County cemetery surveyor / historian pinpoint the historical background on this region's people, churches, cemeteries and landmarks. Any additional info you can provide would be fantastic and much appreciated! And if you have a photo Mary F. B. Woodell, we would like to include it in our historical collection. Thanks.
A.M. Woodell was Archibald M. Woodell, b. 22 Sep 1847 in Robeson Co., NC to Alexander Moore Woodell/Martha Ann McKinnon Woodell. He married Mary Frances Barnes b. 19 Oct 1852 on 21 Dec 1871 in Nevada Co., Arkansas. Her parents were Robert Jasper Barnes and Laura Ann Lindsey. Archibald and Mary Frances had a son, Oliver Robert Woodell, 7 Jul 1873 in Prescott, Nevada Co., Arkansas (my grandfather). Then they had another son, George, and Mary Frances died in childbirth with him. Archibald went on to marry Emily Marie Richardson and had another 12 kids. I have this info if you want. Also info on both Archibald & Mary Frances' families.

I'm searching for a A. M. Woodell, who lived at Lyda / New Hope in Nevada County, Arkansas in 1876. This area about 5 years previously was considered part of western Ouachita County, Arkansas, where I know that some of your Woodells also lived. Do you have a listing for a A. M. Woodell, whose wife Mary Barnes Woodell died in 1876? Her grave has recently been found at the edge of an old abandoned cemetery that state highway 24 crossed over and destroyed, and we are trying to determine Mary's identity. Her grave marker says she was the wife of A. M. Woodell, and she would have been age 24 in 1876.

Woodells are WOODALLS, proved by DNA testing

Recently it has been found, due to DNA testing, that my WOODELL family from Robeson Co. NC, is descended from a 1700s Goochland, VA family of WOODALLs.My great-great-great-grandfather was John Woodall/Woodell, born abt.1761 in VA. During the time of the Rev. War he lived in Johnston Co. NC, then moved on through Montgomery, Richmond, and Columbus Counties NC before settling about 1815 or the 1820s in Robeson Co., NC. He died there in 1833/34. My great-great-grandfather was John Woodell, Jr., born in NC about 1800 and my great-grandfather was William James Woodell, born in Robeson Co. NC, abt. 1830. My ancestor John Woodall/Woodell Sr. was married twice and had several sons and some daughters. His descendants moved on to different states but some apparently do still live in NC and in Robeson County. I learned of my family's connection to the WOODALLs through a male cousin of mine taking the WOODALL FAMILY DNA test. His Y-DNA matches descendants of sons of a John Woodall born in Goochland Co. VA 1704-1710. Also, a descendant of Martin Woodall, who also lived in Robeson Co.at the same time as my John Woodall family, matched my cousin's DNA exactly. So perhaps some of the other Woodells who posted messages on this list are WOODALLs and should take the DNA test. The person tested, however, has to be a male who is a direct descendant of a Woodell through the male line. Females do not qualify. The testing is done through FamilyTree DNA. If anyone wants more information, please let me know.

Hello... I've posted before, but my ancestry subscription has ended and my email address has changed, so I want to make an update. I am still patiently looking for any family members related to a T. William Woodell, born ca 1847-50, possibly in northeastern South Carolina. He married (probably second wife) Maggie Thompson around 1885 or so. Children listed are: Bennie, Ellen, James (married Flora Nance), Charlie, Lonnie (married Nancy Ransom), Sallie, Lela, Katie, and Rosa. T. William lived with his family in Maxton, NC around 1900. He died before 1910.. no death certificate and I don't know where he is buried. Maggie and her family were in Red Bluff, SC in 1910. Please contact me at heidithompson@widomaker.com if you have any info regarding any of these family members.

Looking for 1/2 sister, her father Mack (which could be a nickname) was my GGF. My GF Robert E Lee Woodell, DOB July 1909, from Arkansas claimed he had 1/2 sister and was never able to locate her. I am at a dead-end, since my GF was raised by an Uncle beginning at the age of 5 and all have passed on. Thanks
