WOODFIN

so whats fascinating is how uncommon this name is. how few white woodfins were around before 1800(in georgia where my woodfin family was) and the number of woodfins migrating to tennessee and arkansas. my woodfin is a freed slave by the name of HANNAH. i suspect her mothers name was DELIA. i cannot make a connection between the two white woodfins in their hamlet in penfield greene county georgia and their service to those two white families. one was a minister, the other a professor at MERCER institute.
if you have any information to share on georgia woodfins it would be profoundly appreciated.

My dad, Gordon Richard Woodfin, was born in Rockford in 1947 to Georgie Marie Green, but I don't know his father's name, who left soon after the birth. My brother is Gordon Woodfin Jr who was born and raised in Georgia (currently in Summerville, GA) and my sister lives in the same city. Her name is Nancy Woodfin Sneed.
I was born in California, but was raised in Clay County (Millerville) and now live in Hemet, CA.
Unfortunately, with my grandfather not being there for my dad, and my dad passing in 2007, I have no knowledge of any relations to any Woodfins. I did meet in passing a young girl from Coosa County who would be appx 30 yrs old now, but do not remeber her name or any other details.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I will answer any I can.

Re: Silas Woodfin

That is a good idea. For example my great great grandfather on the census appeared as Jackson then Jack and John. Then I located same family names and wife name and he was under A. Jackson Green. I asked my grandmother and she stated his first name was Andrew Jonathan nicknames Jack and Jackson Green. So then found him another time as Andrew Johnathan Greene with 2nd wife but with my great grandfather ! So explore all possibilities. We are indeed like Sherlock Holmes to sniff out the evidence of all types and leads to anything as investigators indeed. : ) Good Luck.

Blessings for a Family Thanksgiving as well to you.

Carolyn Green Lanham

I haven't been working on the Woodfin branch for a while. Sorry I missed your message. Yes, I do have the data you sent, but thanks anyway. I need Silas pre-1840, preferably in VA, or something about his parents if possible. Everytime I try to locate him, the references come up "John Woodfin" instead. Guess I should look for a John Silas Woodfin.

I don't think I can be of much help to you. My Thomas Swann was born 1 November,1790, in Mecklenburg Co., NC and died 14 April 1853, Noxubee Co., MS. As far as I know, none of this family ever lived in LA although I do know that they came to TX by boat and that the route would have been through LA. Malcom Swann, one of Thomas's sons moved his family to Hunt Co.,Texas after the Civil War along with his mother, Phebe. She died and is buried there. Some of the descendants of Thomas moved to Red River Co., Texas prior to the Civil War and lived there for several generations. I would be delighted to find that we do have some connection. If you can tell me anything more about your line, maybe I can find something.
Carol

Hi, this is a relatively old query now but I will give it a try. I am interested in your information about Thomas Swann/Phebe Woodfin marriage. I am researching a family Of Thomas Swann (Swan) living in Mississippi in 1850-1870. My Thomas was born in 1837 in South Carolina according to the 1880 census, married Sarah Jones in MS, and moved on to Louisiana by 1870's. However, there seems to be some tie to Texas that I can not reconcile at this time.

Hi ... thanks Vonette.

The MS and TN Sheltons I'm trying to find counties for are the SHELTONs that Gwen Shelton is researching. I'm trying to determine where to begin in my own research for ancestors who were also in MS and TN. Vonette, did your SHELTON ancestors ultimately end up in Cotton Plant, AR?

Thanks

Deborah

Yes and no. They were all in Cotton Plant in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Then in the 1900 Census, Ben Shelton and his 2nd wife Lula Richardson Shelton and his children were still in Cotton Plant. Jack and Easter Shelton were in Drew County in 1900. Then in 1910 Census, Jack and Ben Shelton were in Desha County. Then in 1920, they were in Lincoln County. I have a site on myfamily.com. If you give me your e-mail address, I will send you an invitation.

gwenshelton@yahoo.com

Thank you for answering my query. However, I don't think your Thomas E. Woodfin is the same as mine. Mine was born in approximately 1818 in VA and died before 1900, probably in Fannin County, Texas. He lived in Missouri in approximately 1857 and was in Texas in 1860. He married 1. Harriet 2. Mary E. Moores. Children with Harriet were Perlina, James & Harriet. Children with Mary E. Moores were Effie, John W. Charles, David and Nancy P. (my g grandmother). There are alot of Woodfins in Shelby County, Texas. Good luck in your research.

Karen

America Bowles/James A. Woodfin/Richard Britton

My husband's grandfather was John Edward Woodfin. His mother was America Bowles Crawford Britton Woodfin. She married Richard Britton in Nashville, TN, in 1865. She married James Atkinson Woodfin in 1873. In 1870, John Edward was born. He always used the surname Woodfin, but it looks like he may have been a Britton. We were told that he stopped talking about his family altogether after 1895, following a bitter dispute over a will. James A. Woodfin had a brother Riley. John E. had two half-brothers, Joe and Dick Britton, and Riley and William C. as brothers. Any further info would be gratefully received.
