You may be right about Rozelier. She is listed as living with George and Margaret in Ohio in the 1850 US Census. However, this census does not include relationships, so she may have been a cousin. Census lists her as 8 yrs old in 1850. Upon looking at this census again, I find a John A. Van Gesen living close to them. getting interesting. So far I haven't found anyone with the name Rozelier listed as a child of any of the other Woodmansees I am looking at.

According to the newly minted Woodmansee Genealogy, George married Margaret M. Van Geison in Mar 1847. They moved eventually to Calhoun Co., Mich. where Margaret d. in 1872. George m. Priscilla Lamb second in 1873. The book lists three children of George and Margaret: Francis, Ralph and an infant who d. soon after birth. Rozelier is not listed. It would seem that something is odd since you list his birth in 1842; George was supposedly m. in 1847; and there is a large gap between the 1st and 2nd child.

Most of what you write is accurate and documented. Local histories in Wayne County, PA say that Gideon and his family came here ca. 1816 along with son-in-law Rufus Geer (m. Azuba Woodmansee). His obituary says that Amy died some six years before him. Although Thomas and Jeremiah came here, they didn't stay long. James (my ancestor) stayed. I have found no evidence that Amy Carter was an Indian and believe it's based on misreading an entry in an old record. There is a record of her birth to John Carter and Lydia Bowen in MA. Anyway, I think I can provide some answers. Contact me at aohara39@gmail.com.

Eugene C. Woodmansee Murder 1867

While doing some research on family, I ran across an interesting news article from 1911. Although probably not related directly to me, I still want to find out something about it. Eugene C. Woodmansee of Illinois went to Indiana in 1867 to marry a Sarah Vert. Just before the wedding he vanished. forty-four years later, his bones were discovered in a trunk buried under an old road house. His mother and father came from Illinois for the wedding. His brother was J. H. Woodmansee and lived at Danville, Illinois. If anyone knows anything about this incident or the family, please let me know.

Margaret Woodmansee, Husband of George G. Woodmansee

I am searching for any information I can find on Margaret M Woodmansee, born around 1820 in New York, who married George Gideon Woodmansee around 1840, probably in Orleans County, NY. I have found one source who believes her maiden name was Vangeison. There was a Vangeison family living in the Orleans County area around this time, but so far I have not been able to confirm this. If anyone knows anything about Margaret, please point out some sources that will start me off. Other information I know about her is: she lived in Fairfield, Ohio in 1850, then in Decatur, Michigan in 1860. She probably died around 1874 in Michigan. She had at least four children with George G. Woodmansee; Rozelier b. 1842, Frances E. b. 1850, Eugene b. 1851, and Rocky b. 1856. Also, If anyone knows anything about the children I would be glad to have that information also.

Re: Gideon Woodmansee

My Great, great, great, great, great grandfather was Gideon Woodmansee who lived in Dartmouth, Mass. served in the Revolutionary War, and eventually migrated to Lake Como, Pennsylvania. He married a girl from Swansea, Mass. named Amy Carter. My researches do not reveal an Indian connection, her father was apparently a John Carter who married a Lydia Bowen (although I have not been able to positively confirm this). My branch of the family continues through either Jeremiah or Thomas Woodmansee who moved to Orleans County, NY in early 1800s, then moved on to Michigan. The marriage of Gideon and Amy (also spelled Amie or Almy or Aimee depending on the record) is well documented as Oct. 7, 1781. They had 5 children between 1782 and 1793 while still living in Dartmouth. Apparently Gideon with one or more of his sons, moved to Pennsylvania around 1819. Amy supposedly died in 1842 in Pennsylvania, but I don't have confirmation of this yet. Gideon definitely died in 1851 and was buried in Jerusalem Cemetery in Wayne County, Pennsylvania.

The pictures of Nettie May were taken in S. Dakota and she lived in the west her entire life. As an example of a possible connection, is there a Gleason in your tree? Maybe Nettie is a grandchild of one of your ancestors and the pictures were sent East to her. Nettie's husband is from Nebraska, so that is no help.

John Woodmansee is quite a mystery man. He was born abt. 1845 in either Mich or Ohio, even his daughters give conflicting information. He married Elizabeth Ruch 1861 and had son William 1862 who died in infancy. He and Eliz. had Cora Belle in 1864 and Margaret Caroline (Callie) in 1868. Cora married Leroy Bailey and settled in Gratiot County, Michigan. Margaret married Thomas Grant Cline and settled near Conneault, Ohio. Thomas G. Cline was born in West Virginia. John Woodmansee died at age 23 in 1868 probably either Ohio or Michigan. I am looking for John Woodmansee's father, mother and siblings. Thanks George g.bailey@comcast.net

It seems a little more tha a coincidence that the Nichols, Woodmansees, and the Mattesons all came from the same general area around Coventry, Kent, RI. It seems logical that the Nichols, at least Reuben and his sons, William, Clark, Amos, and Caleb, knew the Woodmansees and the Mattesons. Perhaps it is a little more than a coincidence that Luther married Evalyn Woodmansee when their grandparents came from the same area in Rhode Island.

When Reuben and his younger three sons left Rhode Island, William stayed. It is his son Caleb that you find listed in all of the family search sites in Rhode Island and became a successful business man.

Freelove Matteson (abt. 1771) married Reuben Nichols in Coventry, Kent, Rhode Island. I believe that Freelove's father was Jonathan Matteson and that she had an older sister Patience(1770) But, there appear to be so many Matteson families, most of them related, that had daughters which they named Freelove. My Freelove had four sons, William, Amos, Caleb and Clark Nichols. I am a descendent of Clark and nis wife Nancy Howell. The Nichols moved to Sardinia, Erie, NY after Freelove died in 1811. I also think that there was a daughter that also died, because on the 1800 census it shows a young girl. However, there were no daughters that went to Sardinia. William Nichols stayed in Rhode Island (Coventry) and his family can be traced through Rhode Island. Clark and Nancy's oldest son was Luther and my great grandfather. Luther is the one who married Evalyn Woodmansee. As I understand, Evalyn was a schoolteacher. Luther also taught school in Tennessee at a privte school before he moved to Monona, Clayton, Iowa.

Yes: I did not realize there were so many Woodmansees. I had never heard the name until I started doing my Fuller genealogy about 10 years ago. Of course, my Fullers and the Woodmansees connected through Alice Mary Nichols and Chauncey Orson Fuller.

I am having the same trouble with names on the Fuller side and also the Matteson. Reuben Nichols of Rhode Island married Freelove Matteson of Rhode Island. I cannot believe how many Freelove Mattesons are in Rhode Island. With the Fullers it is trying to connect Thomas Fuller. There seem to be a million Thomas Fullers throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York.

Cynthia Jane Woodmanse(e) married James Middleton, KY

The 1900 and 1920 census records indicate that her father was born in Michigan and her mother was born in Kentucky. The 1910 census indicates that her parents were born in Kentucky. A death record indicates that Cynthia was born in Garrard Co., KY on 24 Mar 1872 and died in Perryville, Boyle Co., KY 28 Feb 1949. This same death record shows her father as William Woodmanse. I found a William Woodmanse and family on the 1900 Mason Co., KY census? Is this Cynthia's father?
In the 1870 Garrard Co., KY census I found a Velma Woodnancy age 22 with a Cynthia Woodnancy age 4 living with a Martha A Naylor family which indicates that Cynthia was born about 1866. I found no additional records on Velma and Cynthia.
Cynthia married D James Middleton and lived in Garrard and Boyle Counties. Is this James the son of Yantis and Elizabeth Middleton?
Does anyone have information on the parents and/or grandparents of Cynthia Woodmansee and D James Middleton? Thanks.
This information came from Monona, Clayton County, Iowa where Luther and Evalyn lived. There is also a David Woodmansee there along with some others. It goes on to say that Eleazer was supposed to be French.

According to what I have been able to determine, David M. Woodmansee was the son of Eleazer Woodmansee (ship builder) who was the son of Gabriel Woodmansee, Jr. In a biographical sketch of Luther and Henrietta Evalyn Woodmansee Nichols, Evalyn's father is shown as Daniel M. Woodmansee, but I think it is really David M. Woodmansee. It also says her grandfather was Eleazer Woodmansee.

“Republican Compiler,”Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, vol. XIV, no 19, Tues 17 Jan 1832, p. 2, cols. 2-3:

“A woman and her child were frozen to death in Fayette county, Penn. on Christmas night. The woman’s name was Woodmancy --- she had gone to a neighbor’s house, distant about a mile from her own, to spend the Christmas, and started homeward about sundown; a snow storm coming up she missed her path, and wandered through the woods. They were both found frozen to death on Monday morning. How the wretched woman must have clung to her unconscious child, as she felt the chill of death stealing over her!”
Hello most of the information I have found on the Butler Co. Ohio Woodmansee's, goes back to a James Woodmansee born 26 August 1732, son of Thomas Woodmansee and wife Mary? of NJ. Thomas Woodmansee was a brother of my Ancestor, Joseph C Woodmansee born 1767in New London, CT, son of Gabriel Woodmansee. James Woodmansee born Aug 1732, married a Hanna Warden on 18 Jan 1738. I have no children for them. My Woodmansee lines were all in Rhode Island. Most of my contacts have been thru Thomas Woodmansee and his descendants.

Hello my Woodmansee descendants are from Rhode island, thru Joseph Woodmansee 1676 and his 2nd marriage to Hanna Lester, son Joseph Woodmansee 1722 wife mary Webster, Son James Woodmansee Abigail Kenyon. It appears you descend thru possibly my Joseph Woodmansee 1676 brotehr, Thomas Woodmansee 1670 & his wife Mary. His son David Woodmansee born14 Nov 1719 moved into butler Creek, NY, and a son Samuel moved to Ohio. Samuel Woodmansee born 27 Dec 1754 wife Alice Jeffrey moved to Ohio from NJ, so this maybe your connection but would have to look thru my information to find your descendants

She is only a distant relation since we are from different branches of the family. I do have a lot of information about the "old" Woodmansee family of Wayne County -- a branch that died out and moved out in the early 1900s.

I would be glad to assume trusteeship of the picture if you can't find anyone else. I have worked on the Woodmansee History and can perhaps add it to a later addition.

I can also give you the address of a Leet who would be the best Leet to acquire the picture(s) of the Leets that you have.

Please contact me privately.

Thank you.
