John William Woody of Jefferson Co., KY & Hanover Co., VA

Recent yDNA testing results prove that John William Woody shared a common ancestor with some 25 other Woodys that trace their American roots to Colonial Virginia. John and his family are found in the 1850 Jefferson Co., KY census. According to KY Death Records, John Wooddy died Feb 10, 1856 in Jefferson Co., KY. He age was listed as 55 and his place of birth was Hanover Co., VA. There are several online lineages that give the exact birth, marriage and death dates of John, his wife & their children. I have been unable to confirm most of these exact dates. Exact dates, such as these, usually come from tombstones, family Bibles/records or state vital statistics. If someone knows the primary sources for the exact dates given for John & his wife, I would appreciate your assistance.

Dave Woody
The Woody Family of Old Virginia http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dwoody/Woo...
Woody DNA Project http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~woodydnapr...

Re: Did James W. Woody, 1860, Yancey Co., NC marry in Kentucky?

I believe I have finally found James Wyatt Woody (1860) of Yancey Co., NC in the 1880 Census. He was enumerated on Page 386A, in Precinct 7, District 96 of Rockcastle Co., KY. Wyatte Woody, white, male, 22, Boarder, single, Laborer, NC, --, --, literate. This was the southeastern corner of the county that abutted both Laurel and Pulaski Counties.

The Head of Household is Manda Stringer, age 50 and widowed. Amanda E. McFall was married to John M. Stringer, b. 1841 in Pulaski Co., KY. John was a boat builder. He was most likely the the son of either Tennessee or Missouri Stringer.

The Stringer connection is important because Martha E. Chaney (older sister of Amanda Chaney) had married William C. Stringer two years earlier in Rockcastle County and was living in the Pongo area in 1880. This census listing places James Wyatt Woody very near where he would need to be to meet and two years later marry Amanda and establishes a family connection through the in-laws.

Since I have wanted so badly to find this listing I would appreciate someone else's confirmation that I am not just seeing what I want to see. The entry is indexed at Ancestry.com as "Wyalle Norby".

Thank you,
Bob Edens

Henry T. Woody NOT son of Jonathan

New evidence seems to disprove that Henry T. Woody was the son of Jonathan Woody. Henry T. Wooddy's obituary appeared in the Enquirer newspaper in Richmond, VA, showing that Henry T. Wooddy of Oglethorpe County, GA died 15 Nov. 1812 in Chesterfield Co., VA. If Henry did not have relatives in the area, his obituary would not have been published there. Why was Henry in Chesterfield Co. VA in 1812? Only one other Woody/Wooddy has been identified in Chesterfield Co., VA -- Samuel Wooddy (1778 VA - 1856 VA). Henry and Samuel were probably brothers, and their parents are unknown. Note: Henry's middle name was Talley/Tally, and Henry's only son was Samuel Rockingham Woody/Wooddy. Why is Henry's middle name Talley/Tally?

I am reposting this due to the problem I had in formatting my chart of Green Berry's children for the board. I have redone the chart in list format for easier reading.
Bob Edens

Greetings, I hope everyone is having a relaxing Labor Day weekend with family and friends.

The posting of an extract of Monroe Thomas' letter written in 1950-1951 to James Hutchins has had a much greater impct on my research than Leslie could have anticipated. Through the good graces of Dave Woody, I was able to locate the almost complete text of his letter at the Silver Family website. From 2003 to present, Rex Redmon , John Silver and John Silver Harris, as editors of, and contributors to, the family newsletter, have presented online a monthly feast of both current and historical information about the Silver and allied families of the Toe River valley. Their notes and comments on the articles they have published reflect the enormous amount of personal research each has completed and a deep appreciation of the challanges other researchers face in their personal quests for identity. They have succeeded in bringing life to the names , dates, places and relationships of their readers' ancestors.

What follows is a compilation of information I have gleaned from many sources. I apologize for the general lack of citations and can only hope that I have not violated anyone's copyright. My intention is only to sort through the convoluted, confusing and many times conflicting research available online about Green Berry Silver's illegitimate children. Where errors or suppositions are found, they are mine. Everything else belongs to someone else.

Green Berry Silver apparently developed quite a reputation in the Toe River valley for his sexual exploits. Some researchers say he had two illegitimate children and some say he had as many as six. Here is a list of those children other's have identified and those who were possibly also fathered by him out of wedlock.

From Sandra Fender's transcriptions of Yancey County court records we learn that William Robertson, about 14 years old, was bound to Green Berry in February 1837. The mother's name was given as Hannah Robeson but she was certainly a Robertson. No reason was given by the court. George and Susannah Robertson were the only Robertson family in the area at that time and they lived across the river from the Silver family homeplace at Kona. Robertson family researchers list William as their son. However, Susannah at 46 or 47 in 1823 was getting a little old for childbearing. It is quite possible that William was actually the child of one of their older daughters. Mary (1802), Polly (1806), and Susannah (1808) were all of age at the time of his conception and still unmarried. Judith (1809), Nancy (1810) and Sarah (1811) were probably too young. Elizabeth (1815) and Roseanna (1817) are certainly out of consideration. I would guess that Susannah at age 16 was most likely William's mother. Susannah, or "Sucky" as she was known, would marry her uncle, Edward Woody in September 1829 and raise a family of three boys and three daughters with him. This does not prove in any way that Green Berry was the father. Likely, he was just a well to do, generous, single man helping out a neighbor when he accepted William into his household fourteen years later.

Green Berry Woody has always been acknowledged as the son of Green Berry by Sarah E. Woody. Sarah was the daughter of Wiatte Woody and thus the niece of Susannah Woody Robertson, Wiatte's sister. Beyond this, the only thing I find significant is that she was only 15 and he was 33 when she conceived.

Most researchers attribute Thomas McMahan to Green Berry but none have identified his mother Margaret's parents. It seems to me that there are really only two choices. She was either the daughter of James and Ellender McMahan or Stephen and Blanche McMahan. Both James and Stephen were sons of Redman McMahan, both lived in the Toe River valley at the time and both are thought to have had daughters named Margaret born before 1820. James seems more likely, as he lived in the Double Island community near the Robertson, Woody and Silver families and his daughter, Ellender had married Thomas Silver, Green Berry's brother, in December 1828. Green Berry would have been a welcome visitor in their home. Margaret was about 15 when Thomas was conceived and Green Berry was 35. It is no surprise that we find Thomas living with Green Berry in 1850 and probably as early as 1840. Thomas McMahan married Nancy Magdalene Silver, Thomas Silver's daughter, on 21 Jun 1853.

For me, Silas G. Woody is a little more personal. Although most Woody family researchers acknowledge him as a child of Sarah and Green Berry, he is not found in the Silver family database. He is tied to Sarah E. Woody primarily by a Yancey County court record in Feb 1837, at age 4, listing his mother as Sally Woody and binding him to a George Woody. No further record of him is found until 1857 when he marries his cousin, Creeny Woody, the daughter of Josiah Woody, Sarah's brother. While he may not be Sarah's son, I have found no other Sally or Sarah Woody in the area during that time frame. I include him here because both of Sarah's other children are accepted as Green Berry's and thus he could be as well.

Sarah Edge joins the list based on a story told to Liddie Chrisawn by her mother and published in "Silver Threads" in October 2006 by John Silver. Hannah McMahan, born about 1810, married William Edge, born about 1790. They lived along the road between Burnsville and Micaville. Hannah had eight children during her marriage. Sarah was born about 1835 followed by Naomi Martha in 1837, William in 1847, James in 1841, Thomas in 1845, twins Henry and John in 1847 and finally Jason in 1850. In Liddie's own words "...It was old Joe Reid...they wern't nary a one really Edge. They was Reids...He gave 'em all property. All but Sarah Marsh. (Sarah married John Marsh) He didn't give her nothin'. Said she wasn't his'n and he wouldn't give her any... why, certainly everybody knowed." According to Liddie, Sarah was believed to be the daughter of a Silver. Green Berry, still single in 1834 and 39 years old, was a friend of both William Edge and Joe Reid and certainly traveled that road often. Hannah was either a sister, cousin or aunt to Margaret McMahan. Hannah's daughter Naomi Martha married Henry G. A. Silver, Thomas Silver's son. Hannah's son Thomas T.(Reid)Edge married Margaret M. Silver, Green Berry's daughter by Malinda Smith.

Wilson McMahan was Margaret's second child. After her marriage to John Hensley, Wilson continued to use the name McMahan. This leads me to conclude that he was not John's son. I include him as a possible child of Green Berry on the chance that the relationship with Margaret had continued during the intervening years.

Mary "Polly" Minerva Woody was certainly a child of Sarah E. Woody. Researchers of both the Woody and Silver families attribute her to Green Berry. This definately establishes a long term relationship between them and supports arguments that Silas G. Woody was also their child. Of particular interest is that her birth post dates the recognised marriage in 1841 of Green Berry and Malinda Smith, as well as the births of their children, David Hamilton in 1841 and Lodemia Elizabeth in 1842. With the addition of Margaret in 1846 I find it surprising that Malinda and her children were not living with Green Berry in 1850. Perhaps the marriage date is wrong. Maybe they were married but separated at that time. I am reminded of Monroe Thomas's words, "Greene did not marry until all except the youngest of his several children were born and then he married only because the law required him to."

Green Berry and Malinda continued to add to their family with the births of George Washington in 1853, John R. in 1855, Alexander Burton in 1857 and Emma Manassa in 1862. Their marriage lasted until his death in January 1883. Green Berry died at 88 years of age in Yancey County, NC. His will was probated in 1886 and the probate records are now stored in the North Carolina State Archives at Raliegh, NC. I have not seen them.

Bob Edens

Bob Edens

This is an update to my earlier postings on James Wyatt Woody, 1860, and his mother, Creany Woody. I previously reported that I had searched the 1870 Census records of Yancey Co., NC for a Creany (Creny, etc.) with any surname with no success. My initial search was done from a transcription. When reviewing actual images of(Brush Creek Township) I find on page 758,
Family 95 in Household 95:
Balwin,James, 37, M, W, Farmer, NC
Crenia , 36, F, W, Keeping House, NC
Greenbury , 10, M, W, , NC
Wyatt , 8, M, W, , NC
William , 6, M, W, , NC

The head of Family 94 in Household 94 is:
Woody, Edward, 70, M, W, Farmer, NC (Wiatte's son)
The head of Family 93 in Household 93 is:
Woody, Jimison, 47, M, W, Farmer, NC (Edward's son)
The head of Family 92 in Household 92 is:
Woody, Marge, 33, F, W, Keeping House, NC
(Widow of William M. Woody)

Nearby, also in Brush Creek, are found the families of Josiah Woody (Wiatte's son), Marinda Woody, (Wiatte's daughter), John B. Woody, David P. Woody, Greenberry Woody, and James Hughes' wife Mary Polly (all of these were Wiatte's grandchildren).

Given the family grouping and names alone, I believe it is likely that this Crenia is the widow of Silas G. Woody. Her age, however, does vary from that given in 1860, as does that of her son (James) Wyatt. Information given on individual census records is sometimes wrong. In this case it is possible the enumerator misheard or misread his notes, then listed Greenbury (Greenberry ?) first and thus switched the ages of the boys to preserve the required descending order on his final report. That, of course, is merely my speculation. My guess is that Crenia was the mother of all three boys but only William could be the son of James Balwin(Baldwin).

As for James; "Baldwin" in dialect sounds like "Balwin" but there does not appear to have been either family name in Yancey County census records prior to this. I have also yet to find a marriage record for James and Crenia in Yancey County. I did find a James Baldwin, age 16, in Buncombe County in 1850. Baldwin families lived in Limestone Township, south of Asheville at that time. In late 1861 James M. Baldwin, age 26, enlisted in Co. M, 16th Infantry, North Carolina Troops, CSA. He was issued a medical discharge in Sep 1862. This was the same regiment in which Silas G. Woody served until his death in Nov 1861.

I have added the surname of BALDWIN to my search for Crenia, James Wyatt, Greenbury and William. I apologize for any confusion my earlier posting may have caused.

Bob Edens

From the Excerpts of Monroe Thomas’ letters to the Tri-County News:
Greene Silver went to Micaville, then known as Big Crabtree. Their descendants, both direct and collateral, live in these sections today. Tom was a preacher, but morally Greene was the exact opposite of a preacher. It is not my purpose to go around pulling skeletons out of the pioneer cupboards of our ancestors, but facts are facts and should be recorded. Greene did not marry until all except the youngest of his several children were born and then he married only because the law required him to. Moreover, he had a son out of wedlock by another woman, (Sarah E. Woody) and his offspring by this son is perhaps as large today, and certainly as respectable as his offspring through his other children.[9] The son was Greene Woody, grandfather of the Reverends Edd, Sewell and Charlie Woody and of Bright and Greene Woody, of Burnsville. Greene Woody retained his mother’s maiden name for his surname, but he was given his father’s first name for his Christian name. And his father acknowledged him as his son and treated him accordingly, giving him vast tracts of land lying on and between the headwaters of the creeks that drain the communities of Double Island and Pleasant Grove, the highest mountain of which has since borne the names of its first two owners - Green(e) Mountain. Much of this land is still in the possession of Greene Woody’s heirs, his only living son, Jason Woody, of Pleasant Grove, a man now in his nineties, being the owner of part of it. Greene Silver was also an advocate of slavery and owned several Negroes, but his brothers and sisters, although loyal to the Confederates, were opposed to slavery.

I suppose that doesn't prove a whole lot... other than the link to Sarah Woody.
Leslie
The 1840 US Census of Yancey Co., NC enumerates Henry Woody as "021001-110001". I read this as:
2 males 5-9, 1 male 10-14, 1 male 30-39, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-9, and 1 female 30-39.

The 1850 US Census of Yancey Co., NC enumerates Henry's household as:
Henry, age 45
Wyatt, age 21
Author, age 18
Emily, age 41
Mary E., age 14
Sarah, age 13
Emily A., age 4
Josiah, age 20
Myra, age 21

With the exclusion of Emily A., who wasn't yet born and Josiah's wife, Myra, all the individuals listed in the 1840 census appear to have still been in Henry's household in 1850.

Henry George Woody could have been the George Woody to whom Silas Gilead was bound in 1837, but at age 7 he was not with Henry in 1840. Sarah Woody is not found in the 1840 census of Yancey Co., NC. It is possible they were enumerated together in another household, but neither appear to have been in the households of Wiatt or his other sons, John B., Edward or Josiah.

Sarah Woody, age 37, is found on the 1850 census of Yancey Co., NC with her son Green B., age 21 and her daughter, (Mary) Minerva, age 6. Silas, now 17, is not found in her household, her father's or any of her siblings.

Transcripts of Yancey Co., NC Court of Pleas and Quarter sessions for the period Jan 1834 to Jun 1838 list Henry Woody six times. George Woody is only listed once and that was his binding to Silas Gilead Woody.

I continue to find little evidence linking Silas Gilead to Green Berry Silver but it may come to light as I continue searching for James W. Woody.

Bob Edens

Bob,

I can understand your concern about not finding George or Silas Woody in the 1850 census. George was most likely Henry George Woody, the son of Wyatt. He was never enumerated as George, but some of his descendants knew him as George. Silas would have been about 18 in 1850 and my conjecture is that he had already left his home and was on his own. The census takers missed many young men in this situation. One other thing you may have not known is that Silas & Creany were married by Josiah Woody, another son of Wyatt.

Also note that Green Berry Woody was bound to Wyatt Woody in 1834, but he was enumerated with Sarah Woody in 1850.

I have not seen the Green Berry Silver will either, but here is a link to the most likely place to find it online.
Dave,

Thank you for verifying my suspicion that James' grandson William's middle name was Wyatt. I had missed his death record in Ohio. Research on my Woody line is still in its infancy and I have not yet done any original document searches beyond census and death record images. I am in awe of the incredible amount of information you and hundreds of other researchers have amassed and share online at Woody Family Roots.

I have reviewed every household in Yancey County on the 1870 Census searching for a Creany, Creny, etc.) under any surname with no success. I will next try the same for Mitchell County. If she was still in the Toe River Valley at that time I will find her and hopefully her son James.

It appears to be accepted in the Woody community that Silas Gilead Woody was one of three illegitimate children of Sarah E. Woody, daughter of Wiatte G. & Mary Emily Woody and Green Berry Silver. I have read several posts that say he acknowledged Green Berry Woody and mentioned him in his will, but I have not found a transcript of the will anywhere online. Is there similiar documentation for Silas Gilead being Green Berry's child by Sarah?

I am troubled by the fact that I can't find Silas Gilead Woody in the 1850 census of Yancey County or the George Woody (to whom Silas Gilead, infant son of Sally Woody, was bound in 1837) in any family groups related to Wiatte G. Woody. The only adult George Woody I can find in census records of the surrounding area during that period is George Washington Woody, b. abt 1804, Buncombe Co., NC. He and his brother, Silas lived in the Spring Creek area of Buncombe, which become part of Madison County in 1851. They were sons of William Woody II, son of William Woody and Sarah Persel. This, of course, was an entirely different line from Wiatte's.

Once again, thank you for your reply and all the assistance you have given to so many.

Bob Edens

Leslie,

Creny Woody, age 10, is found on the 1850 Census of Yancey Co., NC in the household of Josiah Woody, age 40 and Marginia, age 36. From Yancey Co., NC marriage lists we know that Creeney Woody was married to S. G. Woody on 6 Jan 1857 by Josiah Woody. Creaney T.(or Y.), age 20, is with Silas G. Woody, age 26, and son James W. on the 1860 Census of Yancey Co., NC. I believe you are right in thinking she remarried. I am certain she was not in Yancey County in 1870 with any surname. However, I still need to check all the households in Mitchell County to be sure she was no longer in the Toe River Valley.

You mentioned your husband's Thomas line. You might find the following interesting. Creany's mother was Marjorie (Marginia) Wilson. Her parents were William Wilson, b. abt 1765 in Wales and Creany Thomas, b. abt 1772 in Maryland. William and Creany had at least seven children all probably born in Buncombe Co., NC.

Nancy O., b. 18 Jul 1797
James, b. abt 1806
Lucinda, b. abt 1807
Thomas, b. 7 May 1809
Mahala, b. abt 1810
Ahijah (Elijah?), b. abt 1811
Marjorie, b. abt 1814

I found Creny Wilson, age 78, of Maryland and Nancy Wilson, age 52, of North Carolina on the 1850 Census of Yancey Co., NC in the household of Rev. Thomas Wilson, a Baptist Clergyman, age 42, of North Carolina.

As for William & Sarah Woody, I am trying to sort out the family of William Woody II, one of their sons who migrated to Buncombe Co., NC from Greenville Co., SC between 1790 and 1800. I thought all the Lumpkin Co., GA Woody's were descendents of Jonathan Woody, another son of William & Sarah who lived for a time in Buncombe, Haywood and Swain Counties. Did any of Jonathan's children remain in North Carolina after he migrated to Georgia? Yes, James, their brother, and his family did wind up in Albany, Kentucky but I believe it was Wayne County when they moved there. His grandchildren would have been born in Kentucky and not in North Carolina where James W. Woody was born.

Thank you so much for your reply to my post.

Bob Edens

Bob,

I think you are correct, but I can't find James W. in the 1870 or 1880 censuses. I suspect that Creany remarried and that James W. may have been enumerated with her 2nd husband's surname. But I can't find any record of her 2nd marriage, so that is just conjecture. However, here is a little more circumstantial evidence to add to your pile.

From Ohio Death Records: William Wyatt Woody died 4 Jun 1993 in Cincinnati,OH, across the Ohio River from KY. He was born 19 Aug 1912 in KY and his moms maiden name was Miller.

From KY Birth Records: William W. Woody, born 19 Aug 1912, Laurel Co., KY. Mother's maiden name was Myrtle Miller.

1920 Laurel Co., KY Census: William Woody, 38, KY; Myrtle Woody, wife, 27, KY; William Woody, son, 7, KY; two other kids.

So that makes three Wyatt/Wyeth descendants and I consider that very strong circumstantial evidence. Here is a way for someone to prove the line. James W. Woody's father, Silas G. Woody was the son of Sarah Woody (daughter of Wyatt Woody) and Green Berry Silver, so all living male Woody descendants (if any) in this line should have Silver yDNA. I believe there are lots of living male Woody descendants of Silas' brother, Green Berry Woody, but I don't know about your line.

Good luck, Dave Woody
Woody Family Roots
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dwoody/woo...
Woody DNA Project
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~woodydnapr...

I will go to Oregon Archives to search for birth certificate. I did a cursory search several years ago and didn't find anything but will spend more time with it. He didn't have any siblings from Betty and Bud. He was born about 1950, plus or minus a few years. I saw the SSDI ones, but again not sure of dob or surname so gave that up. I will inquire about adoption search once I find his dob. Thanks, Patt

The last time I saw Carl he was about 3-4 and we were living in Eddyville, Or. I believe Carl was sent to live with his aunt in Riddle, Or. Carl's mom married my dad and my mother married Bud. Carl was living with his mom and was taken in by his aunt because Betty couldn't/wouldn't take care of him. My dad was an alcoholic and so was Betty. We were living hand to mouth and couldn't care for him either. I have always felt that was wrong but was just a kid. Patt

Actually I am looking for Carl Woody, Arthur Lafayette 'Bud' Woody's son. I found Bud at 1930 Oregon census, age 5. His father was James Woody (Not sure if first name was james or arthur but we called him grandpa jim. One of Bud's sisters was Della and one of Jim's daughters. I don't know where or when Jim died but it was after my mother married Bud. My mother was Hazel Lucille Marshall. Della was living Veneta. Bud died about 1962 of leukemia in Portland and is buried in Willamette National Cemetery.

Thanks for getting the word out there. Patt

I am searching for information on Arthur Layfette 'Bud' Woody. His father's name was James Woody. I just barely remember Jim but my mother married Bud about 1952-55. He had a son named Carl by his first wife Betty. Betty adopted Carl out to one of her sisters. In actuality I am searching for Carl to give him some photos of his birth dad. Bud had a sister named Della whom he loved dearly. We would visit them often. Please let me know if this is any of your family. Patt

Getting his birthdate would help. I would think any custody records might be sealed but I don't know. Good luck though.

Also, you might see if there's a marriage record for him.

Or even a death record.

I don't remember how things are arranged at the OR Archives - just the parking. ha

You might take a look at:

www.whitepages.com I put in the name WOODY and OR and came up with a ton of them -- do not know relationship.
Depending on how you feel about calling -- you might pick one,

Then, the Social SEcurity Death Index has a LOT of CARL Woody's listed.

note: sometimes Carl is a nickname for Charles. Do you know if Carl was the given name? Also, can you come up with a possible birth year for Carl? (you indicated he was 3-4 "we were living in Eddyville, OR -- when was that?)

Did Carl has any siblings?

Woody/Wooddy of Loudoun & Hanover Counties, Virginia

We have recently discovered primary evidence showing that William Wooddy Sr. of Loudoun was the son of John Wooddy of Hanover Co., VA. John died in 1786 & William died 1821-1823. Both left wills. John's more well known brother was very likely Micajah Wooddy, the Quaker. Micajah died c1801 and the essentials of his will were recorded in an 1819 lawsuit. The details concerning these men and many of their descendants can be found in "The Woody Family of Old Virginia". http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dwoody/Woo...

Dave Woody

Re: Did James W. Woody, 1860, Yancey Co., NC marry in Kentucky?

Thanks for fill in information. Didn't know that Creany was also a Woody. I don't know about James W. the son of Silas and Creany Woody. But I do know that Greenberry was Silas' brother. He was named for his father Greenberry Silver... but since he never married their mother Sarah Woody they kept the Woody name. Sarah was the daughter of Wyatt G. and Mary Robertson Woody. This family connects to the Micaville THOMAS line that my husband is descended from - he also descends from the Woodys that married into the Lumpkin County Georgia Caldwells. Here's a coincidence in that the progenitor of this line William Woody and Lady Sarah Percel who came to Bedford Co., Virginia around 1750 had a son named James born 1752 who migrated to Clinton Co., Kentucky. I have his wife as Rachel Carter. I've not pursued this extended line since it is indirect. After Silas Gilead Woody's death I lost track of where Creany was - although it was common for them to remarry, couldn't find James in an odd family after that. So again thank you for followup info on James.
Leslie

Did James W. Woody, 1860, Yancey Co., NC marry in Kentucky?

No research on the Woody families of Virginia or Western North Carolina would be complete without visiting "Woody Family Roots" hosted by Dave Woody at RootsWeb. From the Short/Woody Database located there, I find that Silas Gilead Woody and Creany T. Woody of Yancey Co., NC married in 1857 and had one son, James W. Woody, born in Feb 1860. Creany was the daughter of Josiah Woody and Margery (Marginia) Wilson. Josiah was the son of Wiatte G. Woody, Sr. of Virginia. Silas died in Nov 1861of typhoid fever at Manassas, VA while serving in the Confederate Army. Military records also show that Green Berry Woody, Creany's cousin, filed a claim for Silas' back pay with the CSA War Department in 1862. I have been unable to find any record of Creany or her son James after this.

Twenty years later, on 13 Sep 1882 in Pittsburg, Laurel Co., KY, James W. Woody of North Carolina married Amanda "Maud" Chaney, age 21, of Rockcastle Co., KY. They had four children: Mary Alice born 27 Jun 1883, James Harvey born 14 Dec 1885, Dollie Ellen born 10 Apr 1887, and William E. born 19 Jun 1888. According to family stories, James and Amanda separated and James returned to North Carolina and at some point lived in "Greenville." Exactly which "Greenville" is unknown. Amanda remained in Pittsburg with the children.

The 1900 US Census of Laurel Co., KY lists her as Maud Woody, 39, head of household, widowed and living in Pittsburg in a rented home with the children. The enumerator entered the number of years that Amanda had been married as "18" and then crossed it out and added "Wd" beside the entry. The father's place of birth for all the children was North Carolina. Amanda remarried in 1900 to John Jackson Barrett, Jr. and gave birth to a son, Ernest L. Barrett, in 1901 in Pittsburg,. They divorced in 1903 and Amanda continued to live in Pittsburg until her death on 11 May 1946.

The 1910 through 1930 Census records for the family in Laurel Co., KY as well as death records for their daughter Mary Alice confirm James' name and place of birth as North Carolina. Amanda's age at marriage provides an approximate year of birth for James to between 1856 and 1861. The 1900 Census entry for Amanda's length of marriage suggests James probably died between late 1899 and early 1900. The families of James and Amanda's children provide a clue to James' middle name. James Harvey Woody named his only son Wyatt Woody. William E. Woody named his first son William W. Woody and John Thomas Edens and his wife Dollie Ellen Woody named their second son John Thomas Wyeth Edens.

Has anyone come across anything on these or related Woody families in their research that might help to prove or disprove a connection between these two James W. Woodys?

Bob Edens
