Re: Jeremiah Woodyard -- 1748 or 1750???

There are two Jeremiah Woodyards (various renderings of surname) and the first name has been rendered as Jerry and Jere.

There is the first Jeremiah Woodyard who was the son of Henry and Margaret (Martin) Woodyard and who married Elizabeth Thompson; they had two sons, James and Garrard/Jarret (who changed surname to Woodger, Wooger and Woodgerd, etc.) and both sons wound up in Athens County, OH. Here is information on him; much was deduced from the Revolutionary War pension application of hJeremiah's nephew, who had been born out of wedlock to his sister Mary Woodyard, Colvert Mason Woodyard (aka Colvert Woodyard Mason); Jeremiah's daughter Elizabeth testified in the application:

Jeremiah Woodyard (1748-1815 Loudon County, VA) married Elizabeth Thompson, daughter of James and Susannah (Jarboe) Thompson of St. Mary’s County, MD, in 1772 in Charles County, MD; they were in Stafford County, VA in 1785 and in Fauquier County, VA in 1790 before settling in Loudoun County. After the death of her husband, Elizabeth Thompson Woodyard moved to Rappahannock County, VA where she lived with her daughter, Elizabeth, until her death about 1835.

Here is the information on the other one, born in 1750; he was the son of John and Mary (Guibert) Woodyard:

Jeremiah Woodyard (1750-August 1816 Fairfax County, VA) was in Montgomery County, MD in 1776 (rendered as Jere); his inventory was recorded on 28 September 1816 in Fairfax, VA. There are few public records available for this family; he was tithable for road repairs on 22 September 1789, 18 July 1791 and 16 October 1797. According to the 1810 Fairfax census, he was married with two sons and three daughters, all under the age of 15. The 1789 tax list says that he had two other children born between 1785 and 1789. A “Caty Woodard” is listed as dying at Chappawamsic Baptist Church in Stafford County, VA in February 1838 and may have been his widow. His unmarried son Jeremiah D. Woodyard was in the 1830 census for Fairfax County, born between 1790 and 1800; two other sons were taxed in Prince William County, Benjamin in 1826 and Joseph in 1837. There are no existent records indicating anything further on this family; there may have been a marital connection with either a Blansett family, later of Somerset County, PA, or Gerrard “Jarrett” D. Barnett, later of Rutherford County, TN, since these families were Jeremiah’s close neighbors from 1785 until after 1800.

Hope this helps to clarify matters for you.
Re: Hallis Edwin Woodyerd

He was born Hollis Edwin Woodyard in Chanute, Kansas in July 1909 and died in Birmingham, Alabama on 23 November 1960. Don't know where he's buried there, but his name was Hollis Woodyard, not Hallis Woodyerd. His wife Dorothy Tucker (Youngblood) Woodyard, a local historian and author in Alabama, changed the spelling of the surname to Woodyerd, which is closer to its pronunciation. Hollis Edwin Woodyard was a colonel in the United State Army Air Force and was the son of Charles May and Minnie Louella Florence (Thornton) Woodyard. His widow married in February 1962 in Baldwin County, Alabama Freddie L. Scott; she either retained her name of Dorothy Y. Woodyerd for professional reasons or the second marriage did not last long. She did not have any children. Hope this helps.

You can look at Fairfax County records on microfilm via the Library of Virginia Interlibrary Loan service. Below are the site addresses for what is available.
Thanks for your prompt response, Pat. I have not been able to get to Virginia to look at actual records, so have been relying on the information available on-line. (not always complete or reliable) Until I can get there and check out wills and deeds will assume Jeremiah was living and died in Fairfax County. I believe his son, Jeremiah, Jr. also resided there. Thanks again.

There is no Jeremiah Woodyard in the Loudoun County records. No mention of him or any other Woodyard on the Loudoun Personal Property Tax Lists up to 1835, the will books up to 1841, the deed books for that period, etc.

A Jeremiah Woodward/Woodyard/Woodard appears on the Fairfax County Personal Property Tax Lists beginning in 1782 up until at least 1822 (as far as I have abstracted) in the Truro Parish.

The Index to Fairfax County Va Wills 1742-1855 by Ring shows an inventory in Book L, page 96 and a sale in Book L, page 97 for a Jeremiah Woodyard. Book L covers 1816-1820.

Contact me directly if you have questions.

Pat Duncan
GenNutLdn@msn.com

Jeremiah Woodyard -- 1748 or 1750???

Okay Woodyards, Here is my delima: There seem to have been 2 Jeremiah Woodyards born in Charles County, Maryland, around 1750 or 1748. One died in Loudoun County, VA, in 1815, the other in Rannahannock, VA, in 1811 or in Fairfax, VA in 1816. One of them married Elizabeth Thompson (1752) in 1772 or 1776?? They had children, but am having trouble confirming whether Gerrard "Jarret" Woodyard/Woodgerd who was born in 1784 (d.1865, Megis, OH)either VA or MD.was their son as well as James 1773, Jeremiah Jr. (?) 1788, and Elizabeth (?) 1791. Does anyone have sources and records confirming these connections??? I can find each of them in records, but have not been able to connect them. You may either respond to this post or contact me directly at BuddyMTN@aol.com. Thanks Bonnie

I am looking for any information on this couple and their children:
Information I have is from Census records & few online sources, the following is what I have.
There are some conflicts about the dates, especially about Talitha being pregnant with Minerva when Benjamin was born earlier. He was born 10 May 1866 and died in Pendleton County on 31 August 1928, married Elizabeth Ellen Gosney (also rendered Gosnell) and had several children who stayed in the Campbell/Kenton Counties area of Kentucky. Then there were six daughters: Martha C in 1867, Minerva in 1869, Melvina in 1871, Lena in 1875, Katherine in 1876 and B.M. Lacy in 1879 (which the 1880 census confirms is a "daughter"). Also, have Lewis divorcing Melvina Earles in 1864 in Pendleton County and marrying Talitha in 1866 in Clark County, IN. Can't find Lewis & Talitha in 1870 census and can't find Benjamin in the 1880 census (he's not with Lewis & Talitha & girls in Clark County) and think he was working as a laborer or apprentince in Kentucky, probably Pendleton County, but he's definitely there in 1900 with wife, two kids and a father-in-law.

Hanley Woodyard was Henley Woodyard Jr., the son of Henley and Milley Ann (Maddox) Woodyard of Charles County, MD and later Rockcastle County, KY. He was born on 15 September 1801 in Fauquier County, VA and died on 20 January 1878 in Blue Earth County, MN. His father died shortly after his birth (he had an older sister Clary Ann and older brother John) and went into Kentucky with his mother and stepfather John Anderson. Henley Jr. married Sally Hamilton, the daughter of James and Cecelia (Collier) Hamilton and they had five children (James Hamilton who never married, Rutha Elizabeth who married John R. Clark, Salene "Sela" who married Edward Edmund Haggard, Charles Jasper who married Mary Hobson and Mrs. Eliza Jane Clark Singleton, and Elizabeth who died in her early 20s). Sally died in 1849 in Rockcastle County, KY; she was born in Pulaski County, KY on 28 October 1798. Would love to see a copy of the letter in your possession.

He is most likely John W. Woodyard who was born in May 1870 in Cabell County, WV, the son of Emmanuel B. Presley Woodyard and his wife Eliza Cyrus of Cabell County, WV and later Gallia County, OH. (Grandparents: Jesse H. and Tabitha [Chapman] Woodyard and James and Sarah [Cyrus] Cyrus, 2nd or 3rd cousins). John W. was married three times and divorced twice. He married American Blankenship on 1 November 1891 in Galliapolis, Gallia County, OH (she lived there until her death in 1951), 2) Ida Vorhees in 1908 in Lawrence County, OH, and 3) Josie ? with whom he's in the 1930 census for Cabell County, WV where he is believed to have died about 1935. The rest of the Woodyard line is Jesse H. Woodyard and Tabitha Chapman, daughter of William Allen and Katherine (Gaines) Chapman of Harrison County, WV; Lewis Woodyard and Mary Warder, daughter of William and Mary (Fairfax) Warder of Charles County, MD and Harrison County, WV and widow of Joshua Ratcliff; John Woodyard and Mary Guibert, daughter of Joshua and Elizabeth (Gerrard) Woodyard of St. Mary's County, MD; and Richard Woodyard and Elizabeth Tyler of Norwich, England and Charles County, MD.

This Melvina was apparently named for her father's first wife, Melvina J. Earles (daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth [York] Earles of Bracken County, KY). They were divorced in Pendleton County in 1863 where she married 2) John N. Brannock on 20 October 1864 in Pendleton County, KY where she died a few years later.
Hi and thank you so much for responding.

I found the record at the Madison County Courthouse for the marriage of Melvina and John Kelley, which was signed by Lewis Woodyard. How did you find the date of John's death? I have no other information about him and would appreciate your help.

Evaline Still Winkler is my grandmother, and Melvina Woodyard Still is my gr-grandmother.

I have a copy of the divorce afadavit for Lewis Woodyard and Melvina Earles that I copied from the Barton Papers in the Library at Pendleton Co.

I have a copy of the 1880 Union Township, Clark County, Indiana census showing Lewis and Talitha. Looks like the BM LACY Woodyard mentioned is a grand son but I could be reading it wrong. Is this the Benjamin you mentioned?

The children I have listed on that census are: Martha Chandler (daughter of Talitha and John William Chandler); Minerva Chandler or Woodyard (not sure since she was pregnant with Minerva when divorcing Chandler and left with Lewis Woodyard); Melvina Woodyard; Lena Woodyard, Katherine Woodyard, and then the BM Lacy Woodyard. Can you tell me who I am missing?

Thank you for any help you may be able to give me.

Wish warmest regards,
Vickie

That is so interesting. Maybe Benjamin was the son of Talitha and John William Chandler. Talitha and Lewis Woodyard are my favorite ancestors to research. Where did you find that Lewis and Talitha were married? I haven't been able to find a record of it yet.

This is what I have on Talitha and John William Chandler divorce:
From the Barton Papers Micro Film at the Pendleton Co. KY Library:

Divorce Petition:

J. W. Chandler Pendleton Circuit Ct. Pkg 253
vs} Petition filed August 29, 1869
Telitha Chandler

Plaintiff married Telitha Chandler (then Telitha Coyle) September 3. 1865 in Pendleton Co. and has resided in said county ever since. Plaintiff and defendant lived together until September 1868, when she abandoned him and went out of the State with Lewis Woodyard, and prior to twice she abandoned plaintiff and cohabited with other men.
Prays for divorce.

Filed away April ' 71

Also from Barton Papers: John Bill (John William) Chandler was in Civil War. source: Harley N. Chandler Jan. 22, 1943

Barton Papers Microfilm Pendleton Co. Library, source listed as E.W. Autrobus 2/20/1940 states John William was married 4 or 5 times.

Barton Papers Micro Film at the Pendleton Co. Library: Chandler Grooms of Pendleton County:
Chandler, John W.. married 9/4/1865 Telitha R. Coyle

Additional notes to above: John W, Chandler, 20 Pendleton married 1865 Telitha R. Coyle, 25 Pendleton. Bond: Seth Bailey".

So according to the petition, they lived together until 1868 when she went out of state. Where did you find the marriage record of 1866 for Talitha and Lewis.

This is what I have on the divorce of Lewis Woodyard and Melvina Earles:

"Notes for Lewis Woodyard:
From the Barton Papers Micro Film at the Pendleton Co. Library.

Lewis M. Woodyard Pendleton Circuit Court Pkg 175
vs} Petition filed February 10, 1862 by Jreo. E. Records, Atty.
Melvina Woodyard

For divorce: Plaintiff married Melvina Earles in August 1851, in Pendleton County. she left his house September 1, 1861, she has taken up with Jasper B. Whitkaer, and left Pendleton Co.

Notes to take depositions served on Melvina Woodyard, April 3, 1863 by Wm. L. Fookes
Summons served on Melvina March 26, 1862 by C. E. Auclick Spl. Dep S.
Deposition, April 11, 1863, at Falmuth
D.N. Williams: Have known plaintiff and defendant all my life. I was at their wedding. Been separated 2 years now. She was very intimate with other men; they lived on my farm, and I frequently saw men there after night; she has took up with Jesse B. Whitaker and has gone off with him.
Henry H. Fookes: Has known plaintiff and defendant 20 years. She has gone off with Jesse B. Whitaker, left her children and took his."

I also have four children for Lewis and Melvina: Mary Elizabeth 1850, Nancy 1853, Zerelda 1855, and Augusta 1862.

So if Lewis married Melvina in 1851 (but the Barton papers say marriage license was in August 1849) then Mary Elizabeth's date is wrong or she is not Lewis child, and if they separated in September 1861, then Augusta birthday is wrong or he is not Lewis child either. So many questions??

Do you have anything else on John Kelley who married Melvina Woodyard? How he died, parents, etc.? I kept thinking Melvina seemed a little old to be marrying for the first time to my gr-grandfather James Franklin "Frank" Still, and then I stumbled on the marriage record by accident in the courthouse, where she had married John Kelley and Lewis Woodyard signed for her. But there wasn't any other info with it about his parents or anything.

I know Lewis and Talitha were in Esitll Co. KY in 1884 because he signed for Martha Chandler to marry John B. coyle at his residence, the Gabbard Farm.

I need to look up some things I don't have handy, but maybe this will give you some things to think on too. Always so many questions with Lewis and Talitha.

Also have you come across Lewis M. Woodyard marrying an Isabella Smith in 1864 Pendleton Co., KY? There is a marriage record for them and this could add another question or two. The dates would be right if he divorced Melvina Earles in 1861 and the deposition was filed in 1863 as the Barton Papers say.

Thanks for all your help. I do appreciate it.

Vickie
