Hello Laurice
I know quite a bit about Carey Allen Wooley, but I didn't know about some of your line, until I looked at your tree. Turns out that we are 6th cousins...lol. The information I am looking for is living relatives here in Oregon, or the northwest in general. Also any info on Arthur Sylvester Wooley 1879-1839, or his children. This is my direct line. Our common ancestor is Old Henry Wooley, my 5th great grandfather. Was good to find out about you. TY so much for responding to my query.

Do you want to know about Carey Allen Wooley (1836-1915)? I have some information about his ancestors and perhaps a little about his descendants, but I will have to dig it out of my dad's files. What specifically do you want to know? I can do census lookups, etc. for you if you don't have access.

Laurice Johnson
Menifee, CA

As I read this, chills run up and down my back and neck!

John had several children, one of whom was Elmer. Elmer, my grandfather had two sons, LOUIS and Lyle. Throughout the family there are other Louis's. All the information you post here points to the very real probability that this is, indeed, the Mrs. E. E. Wooley in our family tree.

While I look for additional information from you on the other sister, I will start trying to contact the others that you mention. It would be SO fortuitous to actually contact a "long lost cousin"!

Thank you SO much for all that you have found so far! If there is ANYTHING I can do to assist you, let me know!

Eric

Hi Eric,
Here's what I found: Adele Wikstrom Wooley.Immigrated to US in either 1886 or 1888. Married Elmer E Wooley in early 1893. Lived in Omaha Nebraska 1893-1900. Lived in Wyoming abt 1901 (had a child there) then back to Omaha by 1907-ish. In 1920 and 1930 they are in Muskegon, Michigan. Adele and Elmer had five children: William E born Sept 1893; Peter Ludvig (called Louis) in Dec 1895; Andrew A in April 1898; Anna in about 1901 and Loretta in about 1907. ALl children born in Nebraska except Anna who was born in Wyoming. There are other researchers online who have posted trees with Elmer and Adele on them that you can contact through Ancestry who may have more information. I will look for the other sister and see what I can find.
Laurice

I'll try to reply to all your questions from both of your replies.

Unfortunately, we know very little about this branch of the family (my father's branch). We have some indication that he and his wife travelled on the same ship from Sweden, but the same indications are that at the time of the voyages they were not married... in other words, they apparently met on the ship.

We obtained the information about his sisters from his obituary, but unfortunately the obituary only listed the names, no locations of any kind. Long before we got interested in genealogy (and hence before we thought to ask the appropriate questions of those who would know) family rumor was that both the Wooley sister and the Lindburg sister settled in either Minnesota or Wisconsin.

My ancestor was John. He settled shortly after 1880 in Nebraska. He was born in 1857. We don't know if they all travelled together or not. We also do not know the birth order, so it's possible that the sisters were born anywhere 10 years either side of John. (Maybe more.)

And finally as to checking the Swedish parish registries, we did have one relative who travelled up to Lulea in Sweden back in the late 70s. She discovered that at just about the time that the Swedish Government ordered the centralization of the parish records, the parish burned, destroying all the records that we needed. Those records never made it to the central repository.

It is for this reason that I suspect we may have no luck tracking this family. But I had to try!

I do not believe, based on the limited information that we have, that John ever travelled through any of the states you mention... his sisters may have. Oh, I guess I have heard somewhere that John may have entered the USA through Philadelphia

I just thought of a couple of other questions - Do you have the approximate dates of birth of any of these people? Did they all arrive together or did the boys come separately from the girls? Have you looked in the Swedish parish census records for the family? The Swedish records will give dates of birth and dates that each person left the parish and where they went (either that they died or left for another place).

I may be able to help you figure this out, but I need a little more information. WHERE (what state) did your ancestor settle in? Where did you get the names of his sisters? from his obituary? Sometimes they will list where they came from for the funeral if it was a long distance or they might just say "Mrs. E.E. Wooley of this city". Is your ancestor John or Peter? I have a lot of "Wooley" information that pertains to the New Jersey Wooleys, the Virginia Wooleys, and the South Carolina Wooleys - I am descended from the Virginia Wooleys who came from there to Kentucky then on to Indiana and west from there.
Let me know where (at least the state and age in 1900 of your ancestor) and I will try.
Laurice Johnson

I know this is worse than searching for a needle in a haystack, but I've got to try.

I am descended from Hans Peter Wikstrom and Anna Stina Johansdoter, of Lulea Sweden. Hans and Anna had (at least) 4 children - 2 boys, 2 girls. The 4 children all, it appears, migrated to the USA in or around the 1880s. Once here in the USA, it seems they all lost contact. At least no one in my family knows anything about any of the other 3 children.

All we know is that one of the girls became a Mrs. E. E. Wooley, one became Mrs. John Lindburg. The boys were John and Peter. John, at least, changed his name to Strom upon arrival in the USA.

If any of this information sounds at all familiar to anyone on this board, I'd love to hear from you.

Hi Laird,
Sorry this has taken 4 years, but here is an answer to your question about Henry Wooley's Children. As far as we can tell, Henry's children either stayed in Kentucky or went to Indiana. From Indiana, the descendants migrated west - some to Illinois, one to Iowa and some to Kansas and eventually some ended up in California even. Some stayed in Indiana and changed the spelling of their name to Ooley. As far as I know this particular branch of the Wooley family (Descendants of William and Barbara Wooley) came from Botetourt County Virginia to Garrard/Lincoln County Kentucky and spread from there and did not go to or through Ohio.
Hope this helps you.
Laurice

Hello,
I am not related to you but saw your query and wondered if you had checked the California Death Records here at ancestry for your grandparents? I did and there is one couple who died on the same day - 22 Aug 1964 in Stanislaus County (just south of Sacramento. They are James J Wooley, born 9 Jan 1912 in Louisiana and Gladys V Wooley, born 9 April 1906 in Arkansas. You could write to Stanislaus County and get death certificates for them which might have more information OR their social security numbers were listed so you could write to the Social Security Administration for their applications which may give you their parents' names and Gladys's maiden name....James' SS# was 435011633 and Gladys' was 526304891.
Hope this helps you in your search for your family.
Laurice Johnson
Menifee CA

On ancestry.com - first click on the search tab at the top of the page. On the right hand side at the top click on "old Search". Check "Exact Search", and make sure that you are looking for exact spellings, not soundex. Then you are good to go. An * replaces more than one letter and an '?' replaces just one letter - ie john* could give you Johnson, Johnston, Johnsen etc and Johns?n would give you only one letter between the s and n.
Hope this helps - good luck
Laurice

Hi,
When I couldn't find them in Union County AR in 1920, I looked for Wool*, born Arkansas 1900-1910 - a very broad search which resulted in hundreds. Then I looked for Eul* born Arkansas 1904-1906 and found Eula G in Louisiana with her parents and siblings.
When I cannot find what I am looking for quickly, I usually choose one of the family with an unusual first name who's place and year of birth I know and search for that - first in the last place I knew them to be (State and County) then with only the State, then the whole US. I generally can get a good result that way. I also do the above steps with only the last name either soundexed or with just the first three letters and a wild card (*) OR with the first name only or with the first name's first three letters and a wild card.
Happy hunting.
Laurice

I believe I can help you with this.
In the 1910 I read: James A 46, md 25 yrs born in Arkansas, father b Alabama, mother b SC. Martha 45, mother of 10 living children, born AR, both parents b GA. Children are all born in Arkansas: Jen? (this is probably Pearly from the 1900 census) age 22; Thomas O age 20 (this is OSCAR in 1900 and 1920); Louisa age 17; Charles age 15; Orrin/Oran age 13; Ernest W age 11 (b 1900 - also called Moody in 1920 census); then the next one I can't read here, but it is a daughter age 8 - in 1920 it is ZELMA; Eula or Eulie G age 5; and finally I read this ad Cora M age 2 - in the 1920 she is listed as MEDA age 12.
In 1920, this family is in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. Their surname is spelled WOOLLEY and James is indexed here at ancestry as Jo Woolley.
I am not related to this family, and hope that this helps you some.
Laurice Johnson

Green Berry Wooley, b. 1794 in SC, d. 1869 in AL

Green Berry Woolley, b. 1794 in Edgefield District, SC, d. 1869 in Perry County, AL was my GGGgrandfather through his youngest child, Rachel Ann Wooley (b. about 1846, d. 1914 in Alabama).

He is reported to have at least 3 wives, Rachel Sawyer, Sophia Wright, and Nancy Owen. He appears with Nancy (m. in 1848) in the 1850 (Perry County) and 1860 (Bibb County) Cenuses in Alabama. The 1850 Perry County Census (name "Malley") shows 8 children. The 1860 Bibb County Census (name "Wooley") shows only 3 children. These 3 in 1860 were part of the 8 in 1850. I believe these 3, the youngest, were the children of wife #2, Sophia Wright (m. 1835).

In Ancestry.com in July 2009, there are at least 7 family trees (besides mine) that show Green Berry Woolley with various combinations of wives and children. These trees show a total of 17 different children (if there were indeed 2 named Wayman A Woolley). The oldest 9 are generally shown to be the children of Rachel Sawyer and/or Sophia Wright.

My question is this: Does anybody have any documentation about Green Berry Woolley and his wives and children, other than the 1850 and 1860 Census listings in Alabama?

I am content with my GGgrandmother, Rachel Ann Wooley (she dropped the second "L") and Green Berry Woolley as her father. I would like to be sure about her mother, and I am very curious about all the other children of Green Berry Woolley. Any information would be appreciated.

I have been there and it is on a bluff near a river. Was there many years ago. On private land and next to a lovely very old house. Beautiful spot but they really dont encourage people wandering around. We had driven from California and they were very kind to us. I think my daughter has some of the few pictures we took.

Pat Swift

Hi Sandra, I had about lost hope of ever connecting to Dad's side of the family again.
I'm living in Oklahoma, since 1981, have been married (76), divorced (81) and remarried (88). I had 2 daughters with my first wife (Arlene Dewey); Kelly Ann 6/16/77, and Tammy Lynn 4/8/80. Kelly has been married at least twice that I know of and has two girls Katy Ann, now 13, and Mikala now 8. They all live in Albuquerque.

Can you tell me anything about what's been happening with the rest of the family? Mom told me that Uncle Gene passed away not long after Dad did (95 or so) but that is all I have heard in years. Mother passed in December 2006, and is buried at Prague.

Dennis
