Re: Chester Woolner, England

I found Richard C. Woolner listed in the 1851 British census, living in Islington (Middlesex/London) with his son, Richard.
The listing is as follows:
Richard C. Woolner head wid 60 Fundholder Suffolk Dunwich
Richard Woolner son 15 Clerk in corn market Mids Islington.

Richard C. then was born c. 1791 in Dunwich, the same town in Suffolk County from which the PEI Woolners were descended.
Richard's business partner in London, from at least 1822 to 1850, was James Woolner, also born in Dunwich, c. 1784 or 86. I've been assuming James was a brother. Another brother would have been John's father (name unknown, but perhaps James, since John's one son was named James)- if my grandmother's description of John as cousin of George A. & Chester was correct. It's certainly possible that those three were all sons of the Dunwich James of the PEI Woolner line. If not sons they were probably closely related.
The 1851 census also lists Richard C.'s sons, Chester and George A., both as scholars in a school on the Isle of Jersey, George age 11, Chester age 7, and both listed as having been born in London. By the Chicago census in 1860, George & Chester are living with their cousin John and his family. By 1870, Chester (still unmarried) is living with George and his wife Isabella (my great grandparents), three children (incl. my grandmother Clara) and Isabella's mother, two sisters and a brother (O'Briens & Spains, all born in Ireland).

With Richard C.'s marriage to Eliz. Miles in 1842, it would appear that George & Richard were half-brothers to Chester. The 1851 census then lists Richard C. as a widower. I found a death record for Richard C. Woolner for June 1853, in Camberwell (part of London).

Interestingly I also found a Boston immigration record for 20 June 1857 which lists Mrs. Woolner 32, Miss Woolner 20, Miss Woolner 17, Sarah Woolner 9, Chester Woolner 13 & James Woolner 11. Except for the Chester, the others all match John's family (with second wife). Chester may have come with them from Nova Scotia (origin of that ship) headed for Chicago. John had connections in NS, PEI and NB.
I hope this adds a little bit to the ongoing thread.

Jim Kimball
origins of the Woolner name

Origins and Meaning of the Family Name Woolner

Historical Overview

Beginning in about the sixth century A.D., a group of Germanic tribes called the Saxons began to migrate from the Jutland area, primarily to the area of England now known as East Anglia. For almost two hundred years succesive groups arrived, conquered or otherwise displaced local peoples, and then took up farming and raising of cattle for subsistence. In the late seventh century they were joined by related peoples called the Angles and the Jutes. It is from the name Angles that England derived its name. These Germanic tribes intermingled and became the dominant culture of England, and the nobility. Over the next two hundred years they consolidated their dominant position. These Anglo-Saxon or Saxon peoples were the rulers of England, parts of Scotland and Ireland and most of Wales.

Then in 1066 the Normans, led by William (in Norman French, Guillaume), the Duke of Normandy, invaded England. William laid claim to the throne of England, and after defeating the Saxon King Harold at the Battle of Hastings, quickly overcame all resistance. On Christmas day in 1066 he was crowned King of England. After his coronation he and his Norman supporters set about elminating all resistance and setting up his government of his new kingdom. To assit in this task, in 1086 he commissioned the Domesday Book (sometime called the Doomsday Book) to keep track of all the lands and properties, titles of local rulers and all people and entities that owed allegience and taxes to the crown.

The Name Woolner

About 1088 the name "Vlnoth" or possibly "Ulnoth" was recorded in the Domesday Book. This is probably the earliest record of the name that would evolve to become Woolner. Vlnoth is a variation of the name Wolfnoth or Wolfnod, which means 'Wolf Daring' or 'Wolf Courage.' The connection of "Vl" or "Ul" and Wolf to the word wolf is easy to see. The term 'nod' is from Old Norse and means courage or worthy of note. By 1221 in Suffolk the name had evolved to "Wulnoth." Suffolk is the birth place of my earliest known Woolner relative, James Woolner, born about 1753. Over the next four hundred years or so, Wulnoth evolved to Woolnough. The pronounciation also changed, with the name taking on a terminal "er" sound. Sometime in the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century the name began to be spelled more phonetically, as Woolner. Genealogists who have the name Woolnough have sserted to me (via email) that the reason for the change is because of the illiteracy of that particular branch of the family, rather than a desire to make it more phonetic.

Woolner Name Variations

There are some related names, including Woolnoth, Wolfner, Wolnald, Wulnoughe, Wolnowe. Another possible variation is Wolfwinhawe. Although Wolfwinhawe may be a variation, I think it more likely to have developed independently. It means 'place of the wolf's friend" from the word 'win' which means friend and 'hawe' which means settlement defended by a wooden palisade.

Lastly, there are a group of folks with the Woolner name in Canada who are unrelated to the English Woolners. These folks emmigrated from the Volga region of Russia; they were part of a group of people known as the "Volga Germans." They are descended from Germans who settled the Volga valley area during the rule, and at the invitation of, Catherine the Great, Czarina of all the Russias. This is a fascinating story, and perhapsthey are very distantly (meaning before 1066)related to the English Woolners.

Whatever the origins and meaning, it is fascinating to trace the migration and distribution of Woolnough/Woolner families throughout the world - England, Canada, the U.S., Africa, Australia.
Langdon ND Centennial Edition 1888-1988

MARIA JACOBS WOOLNER Bio - pg 485

Maria Jacobs was born in London in 1831, received a good education according to the standards of that day and obtained work as a maid-in-waiting to Lady Adelia, whose husband was in the Army.

In 1859, while on the island of Malta, Maria married Daniel Woolner, one of the soldiers of the regiment. After a few years in the West Indies and other countries, Daniel came to the United States as a soldier on the western frontier. Maria joined him in 1870 while he was on duty guarding the boundary line between the United States and Canada. His regiment was on guard for construction of the railroad fra Duluth to Fargo and on to Jamestown and Bismarck.

While in Garrison, her hens provided the troops with eggs. When they were on the march the hens rode in coops in an old buckboard which she drove herself. She delivered many babies when doctors were not available.

Daniel was discharged fra the Army in 1875 at Fort pembina. He became a minister and began a number of churches throughout the rapidly growing population in Dakota Territory.

All six children died either at birth or in early childhood. In 1894 Daniel died and Maria moved to Langdon to keep house for her husband's nephew, James Woolner. She was a charter member of the Woman's Club and active in the Presbyterian Church. She taught sewing to children, particularily the making of quilts, and won prizes for her own stitching at both state and county fairs. Books in homes of older families are inscribed to various family members in the spidery writing of "Auntie Woolner." Maria passed away 22 Oct 1914.

I have traced my GF (William James Woolner b1905 who lived in Bradford Yorkshire) back through a few generations in Liverpool, Lancashire. James Woolner (1816) came from Great Yarmouth to Liverpool. He married Ann Willson (yes 2 l's). His father was James (1788)and his father was Edward (1757) both also of Great Yarmouth. I am unable to get back any further. Anyone have any information which may be of use to me? Regards Barry

Woolner of Suffolk and Co. Durham

Am trying to find out ancestry of James Woolner.
He was born at Darsham, Suffolk, according to census records. In 1881 he was aged 30 and a brewery labourer in Halesworth and married to Emma aged 28 and born London.
By 1901, he and Emma were living in Jarrow, co. Durham.
1901 also shows them as the parents of Edith.
However Edith had been born Edith Thompson. Her parents were also living in Halesworth in 1881 and her father John was also a brewery labourer. Edith was born in Battersea London in 1887.
The 1901 census also shows a John Sadd, aged 33, half brother born Yoxford, living in Jarrow with the Woolners.

Chester Woolner, England

Hello,

I'm looking for information on Chester Woolner, head of household, born 1844 in England. Mother and Father are both of England. Wife is Rachel from PEI, born 1850, father from England. Children: Harry, born June 1880 in Illinois, Mary M born July 1881.

Also found: Chester Woolner b 5 April 1843, christened 31 Jan 1844 in Shoreditch London, England. I'm assuming these are the same person "Chester".
Chester's father was Richard Chester; mother Elizabeth, possbily married in Sept 1842 in Islington, Middlesex London England (familysearch.org).

I'm stuck on Richard Chester. I found a Chester Woolner b. 1818, but after further research I think this is a Robert Chester, with parents of Robert Forster and Sarah Sally Kemp. This Robert Chester was married to Margaret MacNeill and had a James Chester, but he was born in PEI, not England as all other information on my Chester points to.

I think he (and family?) immigrated to Prince Edward Island sometime before 1880, married and then moved to Illinois.

Can anyone point me towards Richard Chester?

Thanks!
Paul,

Joseph and/or Isaac do not sound familiar to me. My grandfather's name was Leslie, Grandmothers name was Bessie (I think). Together they had 5 children: unknown baby that passed away within a few days, Leslie (died very young), Elenor , Robert (my father) and Duane.
I'm very early in the research process. I have no idea of any lineage beyond what I stated above. The only living relative left is my Uncle Duane, whom currently in Bloomingdale, MI. My grandparents got divorced mid-60's and grandmother moved to Chicago and passed away around 1977?

Thanks for your reply!
Cindy

I an seeking additional information on, and possibly parents, grandparents, etc., for James Woolner, born about 1758 in Dunwich, Suffolk, England. He married Mary Forster about 1783. They had a son Rober Forster Woolner, b. 1878, Dunwich, and emigrated to Prince Edward Island, Canada. Robert married Sarah (Sally) Kemp 1818 in Darsham, Suffolk. They had a son Benjamin Forster Woolner, b. 1830 in Suffolk. Benjamin married Flora MacNeill 1869 in P.E.I., and they moved to the Suisun Valley in California. James is my third great-grandfather. There are some rather cryptic references in some of my Woolner granparents books about their being a relationship between Robet Forster Woolner of Suffolk and Thomas Woolner b. 1825, the sculptor. Any information appreciated.

Marshall
