Re: Woon family to Tasmania 1830's

Hello Eggdish,

It's nice to finally have a response to my Woon posting! From my personal experience I know there is nothing like a death in the family to set one on the path of genealogical research!

The Woon and Milton lines actually belong to my husband, but I am the family genealogist. I have done a lot of research on these lines, over many years, so am able to provide you with heaps of info, (the majority of which has been verified from primary records), and I can also put you in touch with others researching these families. The Matilda Louisa Woon, (aka as Louisa Matilda in some records), who married Thomas Milton, is my husbands 2x great grandmother. My husband is descended from their daughter named Emily Jane Milton.

Where in Oz do you live? I suggest you contact me direct so that we can arrange a telephone conversation. In case you can't locate my contact details at this site I will provide my email address here in a form that you will obviously have to covert to the correct format. It is kainui at bigpond dot com.

I have just had a quick look at my file and it seems the Wadeson surname ties in with the Milton line in two places - Charles Wadeson who married Margaret Elizabeth 'Mags' Milton and Harriet Eleanor 'Nellie' Wadeson who married Charles Frederick Milton. As you probably know, the parents of 'Mags' Milton and Charles Frederick Milton are Thomas Henry Milton (son of Thomas Milton and Matilda Louisa Woon) and wife his wife Elizabeth Gardiner (aka as Whitehall). Thomas Henry Milton is brother of Emily Jane Milton (m. Brooks), my husband's great grandmother. Bye for now, Jeannine.

One hit for a Google search on "James Nightingale WOON" and it is yours. I just KNEW the name was distinctive.

Hi Jeannine
Eggdish here. Trying to establish the family history (surname = WADESON) in the wake (so to speak) of a recent family death. It seems that the responsibility has become mine.

In addition, I am investigating the hearsay that our family has two First Fleeters in the tree, and the best shot I have of getting near this information is through my dad's mother's side, where I find the surname MILTON and GARD(I)NER. And that's where WOON turns up, through JNW's daughter Matilda Louisa WOON.
Since I am at the start of this family history adventure, I wonder whether I can offer any info for you. It depends on what you need. Already, your posting mentions info new to me (occupation = shoemaker).

My info:
* JNW m MAB 20AUG1820 in Cornwall, parish of Maker (?) [all info uncorroborated]
* JNW & MAB & MLW arrive in Tasmania around 1830 [uncorroborated]
* JNW d 08FEB1880 [uncorr.]
* JNW buried at Rookwood Cemetery NSW grave 554 section K ("believe no headstone") [I cannot locate this burial on the Rookwood Bicentennial Project microfiches in any category.] Uncertain whether MAB buried with husband.
* issue: Matilda Louisa (sometimes 'Louise'), Emma E, Mary Sophia (b 25NOV1833 TAS), Joseph Charles (b 08NOV1835 TAS), Eliza Amelia, (others?) [uncorr.]
* MAB d 24APR1852 in TAS [uncorr.]

JNW = John Nightingale WOON
MAB = Mary Ann BOWDEN
MLW = Matilda Louisa WOON
TAS = Tasmania

I have info on MLW such as issue and death details, if you need this.
Myriad questions I want to ask, but I had better be restrained since this is my first posting.
Catch you later

I am also researching the WOON family - from Roche, Cornwall (possibly going back to St Enoder). I am descended from Robert WOON m Mary BREWER, Roche 1811. William was s/o William WOON m Charity JOLLY, Padstow 1733.

Blanche Charles
Wellington
New Zealand

Thanks for your reply, Jacquie. Yes, my own WOON line goes back to Bartholomew (c1675 - 1737) & Joyce (d 1748) WOON, of Roche.

In the first half of the 19th century there were two Robert WOONs with children baptised at Roche - one married to Mary, and the other to Maria. Robert & Mary (my 4x gt-grandparents) lived at Holywell, Roche. Robert & Maria - although their children were baptised at Roche - lived in the nearby parish of Luxulyan.

I haven't worked out where Robert & Maria fit in to my family line, but this appears to be their marriage:

Robert WOON m Maria POMERY, 20 Aug 1833 Saint Neot, Cornwall, England

From having extracted all WOON entries from Roche PRs, here are the entries for the baptisms of their children - including Joseph:

chr 2-Feb-1834	Joseph	WOON	s/o Robert and Maria, Ennis, Luxulyan, Miner.

chr 20-Jun-1841	Paul	WOON	s/o Robert and Maria, Luxulyan, Streamer.

chr 25-Dec-1845	Silas	WOON	s/o Robert and Maria, Sevath/Tevath?, Labourer.

I can't find all my notes, but, from the IGI, these are baptisms for others of their children:

Thomas Henry Pomeroy WOON, chr 22 Nov 1857, Withiel, Cornwall

Jane Mahalah WOON, chr 22 May 1848, Luxulyan, Cornwall

Cephas WOON, chr 02 Aug 1850, Luxulyan, Cornwall

Cephas WOON, chr 14 Apr 1851, Luxulyan, Cornwall

Apollos WOON, b Jan 1843

Apollos WOON, chr 4 Jun 1848, Luxulyan, Cornwall

If yours is the other Joseph WOON, he was chr 12 Oct 1834, St Just in Roseland, s/o John & Mary WOON, but, again, I don't know where this family fits in.

If you still have John WOON's e-mail details I'd like to make contact with him. We're obviously from the same branch! :-)

Good luck with your research. You can always e-mail me privately when you verify the correct Joseph.

Kind regards

Blanche

Blanche Charles
Wellington
New Zealand

OPC for Withiel Parish, Cornwall

Hi Christine,

You'll probably find that you'll have to do this modern research yourself, by purchasing the relevant birth, death & marriage certificates for your parents, grandparents and so on. When you get them back to the 1800s we'll have a better idea of where your family fits in to the general picture.

By the way, Newton Abbot is in Devon. :-)

Hope this helps. Good luck with the hunting!

Blanche Charles

My Woon line

I am having difficulty with the Mary Catherine WOON daughter of Joseph, mariner, who married Peter DUNSTAN in Feock on 13 November 1845.
Mary's name is shown as Mary Catherine on her marriage certificate, M. Catherine on her daughter's immigration records, Mary Catherine on the children's baptismal records except for Amelia's where it is shown as Mary Carol, but Mary Caroline on her burial entry and on her monumental inscription which shows her age at death as 82. This makes her year of birth 1824. Her age is shown consistently on the census as being a birth date of 1824/5.
I believe the Mary Catherine baptised in St Just in Roseland in 1826 to a John and Mary is the correct one even though the father's name is shown as Joseph, mariner on her marriage. The date is correct, her second son is baptised Joseph which is her grandfather's name. I think Mary Catherine is such an unusual name for those times that this would have to be the correct one. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thank you
Gail

Hi Teresa! I would very much like to hear any information you have on the Woons. We 'think' my great-grandfather, Joseph Woon, was born in Roche, Cornwall, England on February 02, 1834. He immigrated to Hamilton & Beamsville, Ontario, Canada. He died in Beamsville on August 5, 1897. In Joseph's obituary it stated that he had been a tailor. My Mom said that he would travel back to England each year to purchase cloth for his business. Poor health prompted him to retire & he went into the fruit growing business, and was most successful. We received information that his parents were Joseph & Mary Woon. At first we thought Robert & Maria Woon were his parents. Robert was also born in Roche, Cornwall, England. We don't know if he had any siblings. Again, any information you would like to pass along, would be appreciated. You can e-mail me direct if you'd like. Thank you.

If you're looking to trace the Woon family i know the where abouts of a few, all in Devon and some in Hawi. I would be interested to hear what you may have found out.

There is also a grave in St Just-In-Roseland, nr St Austell in Cornwall for John Arthur Woon 1800's naval man. There are also some hamlets called Woon down there and a village called Trewoon which is supposed to be the original family name before. I've been told, (how true this is i don't know) that the Woons originated from France and are the bastard line of someone important over there. The Tre got dropped because of trouble with the law.

I know there is a John Arthur Woon buried in St Just-In-Roseland, Nr St Austall, Cornwall, England. If my memory serves me well it is the same date and he was a naval man. There is also a village in Cornwall call Trewoon which is thought to be the original Woon family name. There are also some hamlets call Woon in Cornwall too.

Re: WOON family

Hello to Blanche! Our Joseph Woon is the son of Joseph & Mary Woon. Unfortunately, we only know that he married Mary Ann Tallman in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on October 30, 1862. The information we received from the inGenease Database only says is place of birth was England, although we believe he was originally from the Cornwall area. He was a successful tailor, travelling back to England each year to purchase material for his business. At this point, we don't know if he had other brothers and sisters. I received an e-mail from a John Woon. He said "There were two Joseph Woons born in 1834 one to Robert and Maria at Roche Cornwall the other to John and Mary of St Juts in Cornwall. At present I can trace my side of the family to Bartholomew c1675-1737." Does the name Joseph Woon appear in your records? We believe he was born in 1834 or Feb.1835. Possibly a coincidence, but our Joseph Woon had a daughter called Anna Blanche.

Hi Shelly:

I've just come across this website. We are attempting to trace the Woon family also. My great-grandfather, Joseph Woon was born in Cornwall, England, and came to Canada. He died in Beasmville, Ontario, Canada in 1897. If you, or anyone has other information on the Woons, I would very much appreciate hearing from you.
